Cardiff Canine Society Open Show – 28 January 2024
Many thanks to this friendly society for asking me to judge and for their exceptional hospitality. I’d also like to thank my stewards, Lucy & David, for their efficiency and to all the exhibitors for accepting my decisions with such good grace.
Golden Retriever
Junior (5 entries)
1st& BOB Halliday’s Purbarn Goin to be Cloudy
The only actual junior in this class, all the rest were puppies and you could definitely see the difference in maturity. He had a lovely head with a kind expression, well angulated fore and aft, good depth and width and lovely bone and feet. Coat in good order and he moved accurately.
2nd & BP Thorne’s Pantegparish Duke of York
Really handsome 10 month old boy. Super in profile and decent bone and feet. He was close up to my winner but was just a touch erratic on the move.
3rd. Greenhouse’s Tyloulabella Avicii
Post Graduate (1 entry)
1st. Williams’ Pantegparish Best Mate
Lovely head of correct proportions. Slightly upright in shoulder. Good width of chest, ribs well back and short loin. Well angulated rear. Good topline and tailset. Moved ok.
Open (1 entry)
1st & RBOB Greenhouse’s Rumwood Endless Love
An honest bitch of good type. In fantastic condition following a recent litter. She has lovely head, is nicely constructed all through and moved well.
Labrador Retriever
Junior (3 entries, 1 absent)
1st RBOB & BP Stafford’s Farnfield Partridge
Won this class as she held her topline on the move. A pretty bitch who is beautifully constructed with exceptionally good width of second thigh for one so young. Moved really well and a super coat.
2nd. Jones’ Serengoch’s Knockin Boots
A shapely bitch but lacked the return of upperarm of my winner so didn’t have the same reach in front. A correct topline when she was stacked but she was losing it slightly on the move today.
Post Graduate (4 entries, 1 absent)
1st Philips’ Rochevale Gypsy at Sheenaron
I’d prefer a little more width of muzzle but she deserve to win this class as she was balanced, of good proportions, ribs well back, short loin and good bone and feet. Firm topline and moved well.
2nd. Essenhigh & Bishop’s Brynlluan Midnight Star
Very much a male. A little too long overall for me but otherwise, he was nicely put together and moved well.
3rd. Barker’s Deerbrook I’m the Boss
Open (5 entries, 2 absent)
1st & BOB Evans’ Eminala Star Stuck Farnfield
A very smart bitch. Lovely head/expression, strong neck, well laid shoulders. Firm topline and good tail set/carriage. Good width of second thigh and good bone and feet. Moved erratically at first but settled to demonstrate some really sound movement.
2nd. Evans’ Brynlluan Black Diamond at Bowsian
A nicely constructed bitch with good bone and feet. She was a little overweight but moved ok.
3rd. Evans’ Farnfield Clarity
Irish Setter
Junior (0 entries)
Post Graduate (6 entries, 1 absent)
1st & BOB Clarke’s Covarney Dream Time from Bronrians JW
A stylish bitch that I have done well before though I didn’t actually recognise her! She has a beautiful head. Good neck into well laid shoulders. Correct topline and tailset and well bent stifles. In tip top condition and moved the most accurately in this class.
2nd & RBOB Davies’ Kristesha A Thousand Kisses
Another quality example of the breed who was well made all through and in lovely condition. Messing his handler around and a little erratic on the move. I have no doubt that if he’d settled, he’d have moved truer.
3rd. Lewis’ Kristesha Blowing Kisses
Open (2 entries, 2 absent)
English Springer Spaniel
Post Graduate (2 entries)
1st & BOB Kibby’s Trimere Taylor Maid at Pinhays JW
A lovely headed bitch with a kind expression. She is nicely proportioned with good angles front and rear. Good topline and tailset and she moved beautifully. Presented in excellent condition.
2nd & RBOB Kibby’s Trixhund Scarlett Ribbons at Pinhays
A nice type and another in lovely condition. Moving rather erratically as I think she was enjoying the experience of being shown by “dad” a little too much!
Open (2 entries, 2 absent)
Pointer
Post Graduate (3 entries, 1 absent)
1st, BOB & BP Brock’s Zoalin Better Together
A lovely puppy who did so well considering she was just 6 months old on the day of the show. Head needs to develop but she has good eye colour. Good neck into a decent front and she has good bone and feet. Correct topline and tailset and enough angulation behind. Moving, she was a little all over the place but she was happy – I don’t mind puppies being puppies!
Open (1 entry, 1 absent)
Welsh Springer Spaniel
Post Graduate (3 entries)
1st & BOB Worth’s Sarabande Kisses of Fire (AI)
The most beautiful head and expression. This young bitch is so well constructed all through and was in excellent condition. She is built right and so she moves accurately, covering the ground efficiently and with exuberance, her tail never stopped wagging. Loved her.
2nd. William’s Nyrilam The Alibi for Trebettyn
Another very nice example of the breed and on the initial stack, I thought he might have been my winner. However, he was really playing his handler up on the move and so he had to stand second today.
3rd & BP James’ Jacranella Georgia Belle AI
A nice baby, just looked very immature next to the older two in the class and was erratic on the move.
Open (2 entries)
What a treat to have two super show champions to get my hands on!
1st. Williams’ Sh Ch Isfryn Spot the Difference Trebettyn
A smart dog who is good in profile with a decent topline & tailset. Won this class as I preferred his reach in front on the move.
2nd. Worth’s Sh Ch Sarabande Lord of the Dance AI JW
Really loved the head on this boy and he is well constructed with good bone and feet. I don’t think he particularly liked the floor surface so wasn’t reaching as I’ve seen him do before.
Curly Coated Retriever
Post Graduate (1 entry)
1st Stephens’ Ravenho Looks like Trouble for Brightmeadow
Upstanding male with a lovely head. In good coat and he has good bone and feet. Well angulated front, good topline but I’d prefer a little less length from hip to hock. Moving a little erratically today but I saw enough to see he was sound.
Open (1 entry)
1st & BOB Stephens’ Sh Ch Ravenho Up Town Girl for Brightmeadow JW
Now I’ve got my catalogue I can see that this 20 month old girl has her title and I’m really not surprised. She is quality all through. Beautiful head, she is well constructed front and rear and is in excellent coat. She moves beautifully. My notes say “I love her”.
AV Imported Breed Register Gundog
Open (1 entry)
1st & BOB Boughton’s Parkbalk Ariel Dianell
13 month Braque d’Auvergne with a nice expression and good dentition. Sufficient depth and width and in lovely condition. Moved accurately enough but was roaching her topline slightly as she went.
AVNSC Gundog
Puppy (7 entries, 3 absent)
1st, BOB, BP & Puppy Group 1 Philips’ Rivertone Retrograde
This young weimaraner is exceptional. He is so well put together all through and moves superbly in all directions. Beautifully handled and in excellent condition.
2nd. Matthews & Moon’s Vanitonia Song and Dance
A quality clumber spaniel with excellent bone and substance. Just a touch erratic on the move so had to stand second to the Weimaraner who didn’t put a foot wrong.
3rd. Carpenter’s Aschfahl Kepa Secret
Open (10 entries, 2 absent)
1st. Philip’s Rivertone Head above Water
Best mover in the class. Balanced and correct in outline, ribs well back and short loin. Another from this breeder in tip top condition but I felt the pup had the edge today.
2nd. Lewis’ Enryb Lily the Pink
A smart HWV who was nicely constructed with a lovely crisp coat. Well angulated rear and moved soundly. Well handled.
3rd. Thomas’ Gunsyn Hotpants
AV Gundog Veteran (7 entries)
1st. Worth & Riese Bassel’s Am GCH Sh Ch Sarabande Sweet Nothings (AI) (Re Import)
A quality WSS with a lovely head and expression. She is balanced with good width and depth. Firm topline, well angulated fore and aft. Firm topline and moved the best here. In excellent condition. Delighted to hear that she went on to win RBVIS.
2nd. Thomas & Taylor’s Knabynnus Aurora Borealis
Really liked this typey GSP. She has a nice head, good neck into well laid shoulders, level topline and a well angulated rear. Nice crisp coat. Just showing signs of age. Moved well.
3rd. Jones’ Alkimadus Ruben James
Gundog Group
1 – American Cocker Spaniel – Whinchup & Glendinning’s Partisky Restart De Parti
What a thoroughly beautiful bitch this is. Her head is exquisite, she has a good neck and shoulders, sloping topline and a well angulated rear. She was presented immaculately and on the move, she went with reach and drive with her head held aloft as though to say “look at me!”. She had to win the group today and I was thrilled that she went on to win BIS.
2 – GWP – Morris & Evans’ Bareve By Kind Permission
This girl is getting better and better. She is just my type of GWP – lovely head, well constructed, correct proportions, harsh crisp coat and good bone and feet. She moved with accuracy, covering the ground effortlessly.
3 – WSS – Worth’s Sarabande Kisses of Fire (AI)
4 – CCR – Stephen’s Sh Ch Ravenho Up Town Girl for Brightmeadow JW
Puppy Group
1 – Weim – Philips’ Rivertone Retrograde
2 – GSP – Smillie-Gray & Gray’s Pelenrise Blow me a Kiss from Oakberrow
An absolutely beautiful GSP puppy. She has a lovely head, good neck into well laid shoulders, correct topline, ribs well back, short loin and a well angulated, muscular rear. Super coat of good colour. She moves well. I foresee an exciting career for her!
3 – American Cocker Spaniel – Bedding & Jennings’ Alibama Knockout
Smart boy with a lovely head and well constructed all through. Presented to perfection and moved nicely.
4 – Labrador – Stafford’s Farnfield Partridge
