Whippet Critique
Firstly a grateful thank you to South Yorkshire Whippet Club, for their invitation to judge their afternoon show today. Such a warm friendly committee, I really appreciated their hospitality and organisation under difficult circumstances, which contributed to the well running of the show. A huge thank you to all exhibitors who gave me such a super entry of 156 dogs. I was completely overwhelmed with gratitude for your support, having such an opportunity to go over so many quality whippets. Thank you also for graciously accepting my decisions, it wasn’t an easy task and found myself splitting hairs many a time. Lastly, thanks to my two efficient stewards Jan Fiers and Gill Ellam for keeping the ring ticking over smoothly. I really did enjoy my day.
Baby Puppy Dog (2, 0a) 1. Leathart; Ringmore Jamieson. Confident fawn youngster of 5 months, who was so eager to please his handler. Nice angles and pleasing depth for one so young. Moved out soundly. 2. Hoddinott; Laguna Lynettes Lion. Fawn baby boy, black mask of 4 months. Gorgeous expression nevertheless very raw, full of stage fright and quite uncooperative for his young handler who was really trying her best.
Minor Puppy Dog (11, 4a) 1. Wilton-Clarke; Shalfleet Oliver Twist. Neat fawn brindle and white parti of 6 months headed a strong line up in this class. Gorgeous male head and alert expression. Desired reach of neck set well onto a good shoulder placement, adequate depth for age with moderate angulation. Lovely overall picture on the stack. Moved out confidently in harmony with his handler, foot perfect in all directions. 2. Brew; Crosscop Wanna Go For A Ride With Supeta. Fawn brindle black mask of 7 months. Another quality pup with everything where it should be at this age. Moved well. 3. Winkley-Balmer & Winkley; Edenwhip Call Me At Night.
Puppy Dog (9, 3a) 1. Howgate & Hull; Palmik Turn It On Again. Smart 10 month old fawn brindle well constructed throughout albeit on a longer frame, nevertheless balanced. Correct male head, his dark eye complimenting an appealing expression. Lovely reach of neck elegantly arched flowed into a correct topline. Good front assembly, lay of shoulder and return of upper arm. Adequate depth for age with a good length of ribbing. Rear angulation as good as his front. Stood square, forelimbs straight and standing on good well knuckled feet. Moved out soundly, long and low with plenty of rear drive. Foot perfect in all directions, another big mover from this kennel and undeniably the best mover in the class for me today. Delighted to award him Reserve Best Dog, Best Puppy Dog, Reserve Best Puppy in Show. 2. Russell; Longmire The Lark Ascending. Another promising puppy of 10 months attractive brindle white trim. Nicely constructed and well balanced. Really has lots to like, just out moved by the winner. 3. Hambling; Chaseover Tom Collins.
Junior Dog (6, 2a) 1. Tyson; Starceylon Dancing Master JW. Gleaming black dog white trim not long out of puppy class stood out for me in this class today. Elegant yet masculine, good male head correct scissor bite, nice for size with a super shape on the stack. Adequate depth, balanced rear angulation mirrored his front. Excelled in profile movement, nevertheless a tad untidy behind going away. 2. Higginbottom; Ranveli Royal Duke Of Dawnsafon JW. Fawn dog white trim of 14 months. Darkest of coal eye complimented his endearing expression. Another nice for size and breed type. Well constructed font assembly with moderate rear angles. Moved out well enough in all directions. Just preferred the overall picture of 1. 3. Russell; Longmire Atlantic Starman
Yearling Dog (4, 0a) 1. Price; Kierpark Moonlight Shadow Among Silkdance JW. Fawn brindle parti 22 months of nice breed type. Correct male head with a pleasing expression. Good front and infill with correct bladed bone, desired topline and strong rear. Lovely shape in profile with a definite tuck up which I preferred, moved out freely. 2. Searle & Rawlinson; Reffton Tibalt At Whipsearle JW (IMP ESP). Red fawn white trim of similar age. Attractive head, darkest of coal eye complimented his kind expression. Nice angles fore and aft, with well developed first thigh. Moved out freely in all directions. 3. Brew; Nevedith Gold Blend.
Novice Dog (5, 2a) 1. Howgate & Hull; Palmik Turn It On Again. 2. Dargue & Halliday; Bowdonia Feet Of Flames At Jalwhipp. Fawn brindle parti, black mask of 11 months. A quality puppy full of substance with good bone. Desired angles, adequate depth of brisket for age and strong in loin, really has lots to like. Moved out well and freely in all directions, true coming and going. Unlucky to meet the winner today. 3. Furniss; Jazzellie Reach For The Sky.
Graduate Dog (2, 0a) 1. Middleton & Gilhooly; Stormida The Brave. Fawn white trim almost 3 years old, built on lovely flowing lines. Attractive head with a correct eye set. Good reach of neck which flowed into a correct topline. Nice angles fore and aft with a sweeping turn of stifle. Moved soundly. 2. Turner; Moonfleur Moroccan Mint. Another fawn of 3 years, masculine with lots of pleasing attributes, nevertheless not quite the topline of 1.
Post Graduate Dog (5, 0a) 1. Robinson; Indian Chief At Tarward. Fawn boy nice for type and size. Well constructed and balanced throughout. Clean cut front, pleasing topline with good width over hindquarters. Moved out well enough. 2. Wayman; Ranveli Beach Boy At Scarletfair. Fawn brindle and white parti a tad taller in stature and built on a lighter frame. Another well constructed lad. Lovely sweeping underline flowed into a correct tuck up. Just preferred the overall picture of 1. 3. Holland; Elmanash Grecian King.
Limit Dog (8, 1a) 1. Wayman; Collooney Charlie Brown At Scarletfair JW. Gorgeous pale cream fawn boy white trim, of whom I had the pleasure of judging last year. Good masculine head with the darkest of eye complimented his melting expression, clean scissor bite and strong under jaw. Muscular neck flowed into a correct front assembly, lovely depth with plenty of heart room. Strong through the loin, good width of hip and powerful thigh. Sweeping turn of stifle which enabled great rear drive. Moved well today, sound in all directions holding a correct topline. 2. Postlethwaite; Starceylon New King. An eye catching blue with white trim of 17 months. Lovely shape in profile, elegant nevertheless unmistakably a male. I’m sure will have more to offer as he matures. Nevertheless adequate depth for age, curvy underline and pleasing topline. Would have liked a bit more return of upper arm, nonetheless moved out effortlessly, sound in all directions. 3. Martin; Bowdonia Go The Distance For Stalwart.
Open Dog (12, 4a) 1. Varnam & Parker; Supeta’s Mojito For Aylros. Handsome masculine fawn full of quality headed this strong lineup today. Correct male head, his darkest of eye commended an alert expression. Lovely reach of neck flowed into a well constructed front. Good lay back of shoulder, length and return of upper arm, elbow falling directly under wither viewed in profile. Correct bladed bone and standing on good feet. Good depth of brisket, curvy underline and desired topline. Presented a super and well balanced picture on the stack. Strong in rear with balanced unexaggerated hindquarters which I preferred. Free mover, foot perfect in all directions. Best Dog, Best Opposite Sex in Show. 2. Wilton-Clark; Shalfleet Chasing The Wind JW. Flashy Brindle white trim, nice for size with an air of elegance and grace of outline. Attractive head with correct dentition. Adequate depth, good length of ribbing and in good coat. Expertly presented, this boy powered around the ring with plenty of rear drive and enthusiasim. 3. Johnston & Wilson; CH Aarminias Dragon Lord Of Danluke.
Special Racing/Lure Coursing Dog (3, 2a) 1. Leatheart; Ringmore Dalrymple. Lovely Fawn almost in his tenth year looking very well today. More compact in type nevertheless soundly constructed. Maintained a pleasing outline on the stack and on the move.
Veteran Dog ( 8, 0a) 1. Whitehead; CH Citycroft High Society JW. Classy fawn white trim of good breed type, another hiding his years very well. Gorgeous head and expression, balanced throughout and of correct size. Presented a lovely outline nothing overdone with this boy. Moved out effortlessly in all directions, true coming and going. Best Veteran in Show. 2. Dillon; CH Kierpark Smooth Criminal At Runforest JW. Smart red fawn and white parti. Well constructed front with good infill, depth and length of ribbing. Strong muscular loin, sweeping turn of stifle with hocks well let down. Super mover with enough reach and plenty of rear drive, just a tad overweight for me which spoilt the overall picture stood in profile. 3. Mycroft; Supeta’s Secret Weapon.
Baby Puppy Bitch (4, 1a) 1. Morland ; Zoraden Gossip Girl. Brindle white trim baby girl 5 months old of nice breed type. Pretty head , darkest of eye complimented her sweet expression. Good front assembly, adequate depth for age and nicely balanced. Moved out well in all directions. A little pocket rocket certainly enjoying herself. I blamed the gay tail on her exuberance at such a tender age. Best Baby Puppy in Show. 2. Le’Vell ; Velandor Ballerina Baby. Fawn of almost 6 months. Completely different in type. Lovely smooth flowing lines on a longer frame. Unsettled on the table and a little reluctant to move out to her full potential. I’m sure her day will come. 3. Leathart ; Ringmore Jocasta
Minor Puppy Bitch (11, 5a) 1. Short; Collooney Celeste. Strikingly marked fawn brindle of just 6 months stood out for me in this strong class today. Good head, correct stop with the darkest of eye really complimented her endearing expression. Feminine and nicely put together with everything where it should be at this age. Super front and infill, well set on neck flowed into a good shoulder placement with adequate depth. Correct angles fore and aft just needs to develop in top line. I believe this was her debut in the ring today, such a well settled little sweetheart she didn’t put a foot wrong. Best mover for me, moved so effortlessly with great fluidity, foot perfect in all directions. Best Puppy Bitch, Best Puppy in Show. 2. Jones; Jothryn Manhattan Blonde. Another quality feminine brindle of 8 months. Well constructed front assembly and balanced proportions. Moved well , sound from every angle. 3. Mycroft; Crosscop California Barbie From Supeta.
Puppy Bitch (6, 1a) 1. Howgate & Hull; Palmik Take Me Home. Quality fawn white trim of 10 months. Relatively mature for age, spot on for size and of good breed type. Really pushed hard for best puppy bitch today. A ‘splitting hairs’ decision and could have easily changed them around on another day. Feminine and well balanced throughout. Desired bladed bone, good spring of pastern and standing on well knuckled neat feet. Presented in the best condition, coat and muscle tone. She excelled on the move holding a good topline, foot perfect in all directions with plenty of rear drive. 2. Short; Collooney Bellissima Bloom. Black white trim of 6 months with a definite ‘bloom’ to her coat as her name suggests. Totally different in type, stronger and built on a longer frame. A little nervous on the table today. Nevertheless, settled on the ground and moved out well. Sound in all directions. 3. Thomas; Bowdonia Sky Full Of Stars.
Junior Bitch (8, 1a) 1. Whitehead & Smith; Creme Anglaise’s Lady Bridgerton Of Citycroft (IMP NLD). Shapely fawn and white parti, not long out of puppy class caught my eye straight away. Good breed type and spot on for size. Pretty head and expression. Good front and infill, adequate depth and well balanced with correct angulation. She presented a lovely outline on the stack. Best mover in the class for me, sound in all directions. 2. Carr; Jothryn True Way Love. Dark brindle still just a puppy held her own in this class today. Feminine and nicely balanced throughout with lots of pleasing attributes. Moved out well enough. 3. Tyson; Starceylon Regina Di Quadri JW
Yearling Bitch (5, 3a) 1. Howgate & Hull; Palmik Truth About Love JW. Gorgeous, quality 2 year old pale fawn oozing breed type and nice for size. Lovely feminine head with the darkest of oval eye, desired well set rose ear only added to her crowning glory. Elegantly arched neck flowed into a correct front assembly, good depth and a good length of ribbing. Pleasing angulation fore and aft with no exaggeration. Presented a lovely picture on the stack, so well balanced with such smooth flowing lines and in good coat. Yet another big mover from this kennel, effortless in profile with enough forward reach, allowing a low daisy cutting action whilst holding a pleasing topline. Sound as a pound from all angles with plenty of rear drive. Reserve Best Bitch, Reserve Best In Show. 2. Johnston & Wilson; Danluke Don’t I Know It JW. Brindle of 21 months another of quality unlucky to meet the winner today. Gorgeous refined feminine head with a delightful expression. A tad stronger, also heavier in forehand than 1, nevertheless presented a super shape in profile. Curvaceous underline flowed into a definite tuck up. Good through the ribcage and strong in loin. Powerful rear with balanced unexaggerated hindquarters. Lovely free mover, sound in all directions.
Novice Bitch (7, 1a) 1. Howgate & Hull; Palmik Take Me Home. 2. Thomas; Bowdonia Sky Full Of Stars. Smart brindle and white particolour of 11 months, nicely put together youngster with a lovely balanced outline. Desired bladed bone and a good spring of pastern. Moved out correctly and with purpose. 3. Holland; Elmanash Glenfarclas.
Graduate Bitch (4,2a) 1. Hoddinott; Sandspring Sea Hawk. Fawn white trim of 2 years old. Good depth with plenty of heart room, powerful muscular thigh with hocks well let down. A compact sort nevertheless presented a pleasing shape in profile. Moved out with enough rear drive. 2. Mallinson; Edenwhip Vera. Fawn brindle and white, her young handler really getting the best out of this youngster today. Nice angulation to forehand and rear with a curvy underline. Not quite the movement of 1.
Post Graduate Bitch (7, 1a) 1. Wilkinson; Silkridge Saffron Of Fletchgate. Feminine brindle and white parti spot on for size. Good female head and expression. Presented a lovely shape on the stack with good depth and moderate rear angulation. Moved well enough just a little fast at times. 2. Thomas & Halliday; Brochinbelle Ooh La La At Bowdonia. Lovely fawn brindle with lots of pleasing attributes. Nice angles and well balanced throughout. Correct depth and good infill, not quite the topline of 1. Moved out well, freely and soundly in all directions. 3. Winup, Paipala & Furness; Pagarni It’s Snow Joke Cum Rogansrock
Limit Bitch (14, 4a) 1. Lister & Swarbrick; Edenwhip High Cut Nick. Elegant mature fawn built on a longer frame. Ultra feminine and shapely, lovely flowing lines so smooth to go over. Would have preferred a tad more width in front, nevertheless she just floated effortlessly around the ring foot perfect in all directions. 2. Morland; Zoraden You Are My Universe JW. Feminine fawn white trim of 22 months. Spot on for size and of good breed type. Correct front assembly, depth and infill. Shapely girl with well developed thigh. Moved correctly in profile with good reach and drive holding a lovely top line, just a shade close behind on the away.
Open Bitch (8, 1a) 1. Mycroft, Morris & Waddell; CH Crosscop Candle In The Wind To Supeta. Beautiful fawn white trim headed this quality class today. Another I’d had the pleasure of judging last year. Ultra feminine from her nose to the tip of her tail. Lovely breed type and spot on for size. Gorgeous refined head, well set oval eye complimented the sweetest of expression. Elegantly arched neck of good length flowed into a correct shoulder placement and return of upper arm. Such a shapely classy lady, full of curves in all the right places, depth, topline, underline, she has it all. Nicely angulated rear matched her front, good width of first thigh, turn of stifle with hocks well let down. Presented in the best of condition, coat and muscle tone. Super overall picture stood in profile and well balanced throughout. On the move foot perfect in all directions, carrying her tail correctly in a delicate curve. Handled to perfection. Well deserved Best Bitch & Best In Show. 2. Short; Collooney The Little Tease. Appealing fawn brindle and white totally different in breed type. Stronger and built on a longer frame, nevertheless feminine and well constructed throughout. She portrayed a well balanced outline on the stack. Another super mover from this kennel. Moved out correctly with ease and such fluidity I could have watched her all day. 3. Mycroft; CH Supeta’s Little Darlin’ JW.

Desired angles fore and aft, well balanced with a lovely ‘whippety’ shape in profile. Moved out well enough holding a pleasing topline. Best Racing/Lure Coursing In Show. 2. Hoddinott; Sandspring Sea Hawk.
Veteran Bitch (4,1a) 1. Whitaker-Crosby; Mulcair Meerkat Marble JW, ShCM. Quality pale fawn looking exceptional in her eleventh year. Gorgeous feminine head with a dark expressive eye. Good depth and well constructed front assembly. Curvaceous underline flowed into a definite tuck up. Strong through the loin with adequate width to rear. Hind angulation mirrored her front, sweeping turn of stifle with hocks well let down. Desired bladed bone and a good spring of pastern. Sound in all directions holding a correct topline. 2. Vaughan-Wall; Shirotae Solo Surprise VW. Another good fawn looking well for her years. Slightly more up to size for me nevertheless balanced, feminine and held an elegant profile. Lovely head with the darkest of eye. Nice depth, good loin and well developed rear. Moved ok. 3. Winup & Paipala; Rogansrock Lucky Charm.
