GUILDFORD & DISTRICT CANINE SOCIETY PREMIER OPEN SHOW

18TH FEB 2024

Thank you to the officers and committee for your kind invitation to judge at your show. The atmosphere was wonderful and the hospitality shown was nice too. I liked that the tannoy system played some music throughout the day and it was clear to hear, although I do think that it unsettled some of the dogs later in the day when the crowds thinned out a little. Thank you to all the exhibitors who entered under me and thank you to those who were able to stay until later in the day for my turn in the ring. The delay meant that we could have the ring size opened up which was a great advantage to the breeds I judged. Thanks must also go to my steward for the day who kept going with a smile.

BEAGLE

Puppy 1(0)

1. Noyes’ Rowsprings Sabre. 9 month old male with a lovely kind expression. Stood alone in the class but he certainly had plenty of ring presence. Correct head with good width and free from wrinkle. Ear placement was good, and they had correct length falling close to his cheeks. Good length of neck leading into a nicely laid back shoulder. He had good bone for his age and was well proportioned. Held his top-line well on the move and held the tail in correct position when on the move, BPIB.

Junior 2(0)

1. Whittons’ Haggarty Callisto. 15 month bitch in good condition. Lovely expression but slightly lighter in eye than I would normally like, however this did not detract as she had a lovely typical head with a good stop, slight dome to her head and a powerful jaw with correct scissor bite. Lovely round bone to the forelegs with nice tight feet. She had good length of ribbing and was nicely balanced. Good sturdy tail set on well and carried nicely on the move, RBOB.

2. Brownlowe’s Rushwater Violet Sky. 14 month old bitch slightly lighter in bone than 1st place but still had a powerful head with slightly domed skull and a very appealing expression. Unfortunately, I think the long wait didn’t help her as she was quite unsettled today and didn’t seem to want to give her handler an easy time. Good scissor bite and a good length to her neck. Forelegs were nice and straight and chest fell below the elbow. Hocks were parallel and she had nice tight feet.

Post Graduate 2(1)

1. Brownlowe’s Rushwater Violet Sky. 2nd in Junior.

Open 5(2)

What a lovely class this was, which turned out to be full of veterans, which just goes to prove the breed has stamina in abundance.

1. Roberts/Spearing’s Linkenlees Laurina ShCEx. 7½ year old bitch who impressed the moment she stepped into the ring. She had a good free long stride on the move and did so with a lovely forward action. Held her top-line well on the move and her tail was carried well too. She had a typical head with a lovely dark eye and nice long ears which were nice and close to her cheeks. Nice length to neck with good shoulder placement and forelegs that were well under her. Good depth to chest and well sprung ribs. Still got nice muscle on the thigh and a good turn of stifle, BOB and delighted to be able to watch her take HG1 later in the day.

2. Roberts/Spearing’s Linkenlees Lyric ShCM ShCEx. As I stood these girls for their critique I said to the handlers that there really was little to pick between as they are so similar so to find out they are litter sisters did not surprise me. Very similar attributes to 1st place but felt dentition was better in 1st place and was out-moved today. She had a good head with nice expression. Good length of neck and well laid back shoulders. Round bone with good substance in forelegs and good proportions in her height. Carrying a little extra weight but forgivable with her age. I’m sure these two must swap places regularly.

RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK

I have not commented on any ridges in my critiques as all exhibits were found to have the correct ridge.

Puppy 6(2)

What a lovely class this was, filled with promising youngsters.

1. Barnes’ Diamondridge Dreadnought. 7 month old male with plenty of good bone. Nicely proportioned head with good colour of eye complimenting his coat. Good scissor bite and close-fitting lips. Lovely length to his neck, good slope of shoulder and a nice deep chest. Beautiful tight feet and shown in good muscular condition for his age. Moved well and had lovely free action.

2. Storey/Piehl’s Kiromol Dare to Flair. 6 month old bitch with a very feminine look to her. Nice plains to her head and a good ear set. Nice length of neck with a slight arch flowing into well placed shoulders. Deep brisket and powerful back for her age. Good tail set and a nice turn of stifle. Moved well.

3. Hicks’ Nuthouse Mastermind.

Junior 5(2)

1. Hicks’ Nuthouse Going for Gold. 7½ month bitch who just oozed femininity. Balanced head with good ear placement and eye colour harmonising with coat. Good length to neck and well laid back shoulders, good depth of chest and straight forelegs. Nice muscle for her age and a good length to the loin too. She had lovely movement with reach and drive, BPIB and pleased to hear that she took HPG1 later in the day.

2. Barnes’ Diamondridge Dreadnought. 1st in Puppy.

3. Taylor’s Tokwe Truly Your Song.

Post Graduate 4(1)

1. Wiltshire’s Oostblik Skyn Spica. 3 year old liver nose bitch. Another shown in good condition. Nice feminine head with correct amber eye. Well laid shoulders and straight forelegs. Would have preferred a little tighter in foot but don’t think the sandy surface helped. Nice deep chest and she held her top-line well on the move.

2. Mitchelson’s Amahle Red Hot Zephyr at Voortrekker. 15 month male shown in nice condition. Typical masculine head with good bone all over. Good forechest and tight elbows with brisket reaching just below. Ribs deep and extending well back. Pleasing rear with nicely defined thighs. Lots to like about this boy but felt that 1st place out-moved him today and was a little more settled.

3. Maidment’s Amahle Red Hot Rockachili.

Open 7(4)

What a lovely class and I’m sure these 3 dogs must swap places on a regular basis.

1. Storey/Piehl’s Ch. Kiromol Heaven Can Wait (AI). 4½ year old male in outstanding condition. Had all the upstanding and look at me vibes from the moment he stepped into the ring. He looked correct from all angles. Lovely masculine head with nice eye giving a gentle expression, good length of neck and well laid back nicely muscled shoulders. Good depth of chest with a visible slight tuck, nicely muscled inner and outer thigh with a good turn of stifle. Moved out with style and had plenty of reach and drive, BOB.

2. Taylor’s Tokwe Truly a Blessing. 4½ year old bitch who had great ring presence too. Lots to like but sadly she wasn’t very settled today which meant her movement was slightly off and made her handler work hard. Lovely correct feminine head, good length of neck and visible sternum, well sprung ribs and good depth of chest. Nice length to the loin and a good turn of stifle.

3. Gevees’ Kiromol The Kinsman JW.

AKITA

Post Graduate 2(1)

1. Rennison’s Krav Addict True Love with Zaniah (imp FRA). 23 month old white self mask bitch. Powerful looking with good bone. Nice large head with flat skull and well defined stop. Eyes were nice and dark with a good dark pigment to the rims and a lovely small almond shape. Thick in neck, leading into a good shoulder. Nice bone overall and a good length. Good muscle on the rear and tight feet. Tail was set on high, carried nicely over the back finishing off the overall look of the dog, BOB.
