THE NEWFOUNDLAND CLUB 24/2/24

I had a fantastic day judging your lovely breed. With a fabulous first entry of 79 and only 12 absent I found lots of quality and some exiting youngsters coming up through the ranks. Thank you all for your entries and to the society for inviting me to judge and also to my 2 stewards who were very professional yet good fun at the same time. I was quite surprised to see a few untypical heads creeping in and some with muzzles the length of a golden retrievers, also I noted one or two who pinned excessively in front. Sadly movement was pretty poor in the majority of puppies present but I judged them as I saw them on the day and not on what they could become.

VD (2,1) 1 Moss’s Freddybears The Real Mccoy 9 yr black and such a gentleman! masculine head with short deep muzzle and well set ears, heavy in bone with huge feet, deep in chest with a strong straight topline and broad hindquarters, he went forward well but picks up just a little too much behind.

MPD (4,1) These 3 caused me a dilemma as whilst the 2nd placed dog was clearly the most together in profile, the winner had the best front and topline 1 Blake’s Sandbears Pole Position 7mth black who was beautifully prepared and he has a fabulous outline, pleasing head with tight eye and sufficient width of skull, he has a good neck and ample bone for his size, chest still needs to deepen but his body is well ribbed and he holds a strong topline on the stack, on the move he is currently rather weak in the rear and lost his back end a couple of times whilst going round, it would be interesting to see him move on a different floor as I felt the surface wasn’t helping his cause. Overall I found him to have the best construction of the 3.2 Kinghams Nandobears Against All Odds black dog with lots to like, head is about right for his age and he has small well placed eyes and a soft expression but to be critical he could have tighter lips, strong neck of moderate length and well laid shoulders, he is nicely angulated in the rear and moved out soundly. Not as strong in topline as 1st 3 Leech’s The Black Star Sapphire Uptown Funk Mileoak

PD (6) 1 and BPD, BPIS Austin’s Davistell Springsteen 9 mth black who took his time to settle but he is very well constructed with good bone and strong body, forelegs are straight and strong and he stands on good sized feet, head is masculine with good breadth and depth to muzzle although a fraction longer than ideal, he has a lovely dark eye and well set ears, on first look I would have liked just a little more neck but most of the length was hidden by excessive coat, he is well angulated front and rear and very well together on the move, a worthy winner of BPIS today 2 Best W/B d and Best W/B in show Canning, Canning and Rennisons Oukaya Forever Ursa Minor (imp Fra) there is so much to like about this quality w/b boy, particularly his shape and balance and he has a super head and expression and a good neck, chest is deep but could develop a little more in forechest, elbows tight and he holds a good topline on the stack, on the move in profile he has a very good stride with slightly rolling gait. Coming to, rather than toeing in, he is rather close in front but as he develops in front this should improve. I was pleased to award him best w/b in show. I’m looking forward to seeing how he goes on as I thought him very promising 3 Hosies Helluland Jungle Book At Shadowrise.

JD (3) 1 Leech and Moir Elgrandbear Razz Ma Tazz a beautiful black who presents such a pleasing and balanced outline, he has a handsome well proportioned head with clean square muzzle and a lovely dark eye, strong neck and a good lay of shoulder, forelegs are strong and well boned and he has good sized feet. Body is well ribbed with strong loin and broad rear with good angulation and straight hocks and he moves with accuracy and drive. Coat which was well prepared was dense and with good texture , he only really needs to tighten up in front and I then think he will be challenging for those green cards. I liked him very much and would have happily scooped him up and put him in my van ! 2 Farrells Chateaunewf Axl Rose With Lazeybears larger 12 month black with huge bone and substance, not the width of skull of the winner and I would have liked a bit less lip but he is strongly made and definately masculine, he has a strong front with straight forelegs and large deep feet, excellent ribbing and a firm level topline, he moves soundly and easily displaying good drive, presented in good coat and condition 3 McPhails Anchorbrook Aye Aye Cap’n

GD (6) 1 Elgrandbear Razz Ma Tazz (as junior) 2 Owles Owles and Bristows Zentaur Fizzical Therapy, a powerful looking 3 yr old who carries a huge coat, good head proportions and clean enough in muzzle but I would have liked a slightly darker eye, he stands on well boned forelegs and good sized feet, he can still develop a little more in front but has good depth of chest and is well ribbed, once he settled he moved out freely. Handler did a great job in getting the very best from this lovely lad. 3 Rhodes Dawbryn Zefas Pride

PGD (5,2) 3 nice exhibits here 1 Drakefords Mississippi-Missouri Walking My Angel quite a heavy looking d but I thought he had such a handsome masculine head with broad skull, short square muzzle and lovely dark eye exuding a soft expression, he is strongly boned with good front and rear angulation and a well ribbed body with depth to chest enough heart room. Moved out soundly. I would have liked to see him carry a better coat as it is quite short and layered and lacks the smooth overlay of the correct top coat but overall I felt he deserved his win 2 Chapmans Nandobears You’ll Never Walk Alone (imp deu) 19 mth black who is very nice in profile with excellent bone and substance, he has dark well placed eyes with a good muzzle and width of skull but is a little loose in lip, very good neck into well laid shoulders, slightly longer in body than the winner but holds a good topline and is nicely angulated in the rear, an enthusiastic and sound mover, a close decision for 1st place, I just preferred the head of the winner today 3 Rhodes Dawbryn Doctor Fourtysix

LD (5) 1 and RBD, Best Brown dog Goddens Zentaur Bout That Jam 2.5 yrs old and presented in excellent coat which was rich in colour and of the correct texture with plenty of undercoat, handsome head with a very slight stop and clean square muzzle, small eyes set well apart but could be a fraction darker, he has a strong neck and good lay of shoulder, body is well ribbed and he has an excellent topline, deep chest and broad hindquarters, tail of medium length and well covered. He is a powerful and free moving dog who covered the ground so easily. Prepared and presented to perfection 2 Blake’s Sandbears Fourty Four 20 mth black who I have had the pleasure of once before when I awarded him BOB and BP, he too is so well presented and is very balanced all through, head has enough strength and width between the ears but could still mature and develop further,, eyes are dark and clean, he had a strong neck and stands on straight forelegs with tidy elbows and good feet, super topline and shapely well angulated quarters with strong straight hocks and he moved with excellent drive and a sense of purpose but overall I just preferred the more masculine expression of the winner 3 Lindleys Legend I Am Canadian Beardog For Lindgreave (imp CZE)

OD (3) 1 Hudson and Bones Newfangled Bone Idle, a mature and handsome 6 yr black with excellent bone and substance and presenting a balanced outline, head is strong and masculine with good width between the ears and slight slope from forehead to muzzle, he has a lovely dark eye and such a kind expression, body is well developed and muscular with a firm topline and strong loin. He was presented in super coat and condition and in this class he moved with power and drive around the ring. I thought he might have challenged harder for higher honours as he has so much of what I was looking for but coming back in for BD I felt he lacked a little bit of enthusiasm 2 Blahuta Iron Man Canadian Pearl 6 yr brown d presented in wonderful coat with rich colour and of good texture, he has very good strength to his head and eyes hold such a kind expression however I would have liked them a little tighter, he is strongly boned and stands on good sized feet, chest is deep and body is well ribbed and he has a strong level topline and is nicely muscled in the rear, moving out freely around the ring 3 Crosiers Nurburgnewf Cayman

Special OD Black (4) 1 BD, Best Black dog, BVD, BIS, Best Black in Show, BVIS Sayles Ch Baranova Top Gallant never did I expect to be told this dog is approaching his 10th birthday, clearly he is the Peter Pan of the Newf world ! Such a super dog who completely filled my eye, big strong and with great bone and substance without being heavy. Masculine head with good width between the ears and a short square muzzle, he is just losing a bit of pigment from his gums now and is a tad loose in lips but this is an observation not a criticism and is perfectly acceptable considering his age. He has huge bone and good sized feet, strong neck of moderate length into a good lay of shoulder, deep in chest and well developed in forechest, broad rump and well furnished tail, in super dense coat and muscled condition, he is an easy mover with flowing action and purposeful strides. I was delighted to award him top honours today he absolutely deserved it. 2 Thompson’s Comfortcove You Can Fly To Safeharbour 4yr d of good size and substance, good head shape with square muzzle and small dark eye, strong neck of moderate length which flows into well laid shoulders, forelegs strong and straight with good sized feet but they could be a touch deeper, good topline and well set tail, moved out soundly 3 Blacks CH/Lux CH Gunnersnewf Black Desire For Blackcoast

Special OD Brown (3,2abs) Iron Man Canadian Pearl (see 2nd OD)

Special OD Landseer (3,1) The Black Star Sapphire Uptown Funk, this youngster has plenty of bone and substance and a decent head shape with clean muzzle if a tad long, and tight fitting lips, he has enough forechest and depth of chest for his age and when he concentrated a reasonable topline, he has width to his hindquarters and he carries an impressive coat. He is a tad over angulated on the rear meaning he falls away at the back on the move but I could see glimpses of drive as he went round and I thought his handler had made every effort to get him together for this class. I liked his substance, bulk and overall shape. He would probably benefit from some swimming therapy to help strengthen him up 2 Payne’s Newetta Lets Party At Squestpaws a w/b who makes a very nice profile picture, he stands straight in front on well boned forelegs and good feet, head has enough width but just a fraction too much stop, he has a very nice neck, good lay of shoulder and level topline and covers the ground very well. I would just like a bit more width all through.

VB (4) Such a shame one of the girls was lame as she looked very nice on the stack but the owner did the right thing by withdrawing her, 1 and BVB Austin’s Mercedes Cancrimo z Lednickiego Zakola rising 10 this brown girl is somewhat heavy in coat which I felt hid her shape a little, however she has a reasonable head shape with small clean eye of good colour and tight lips, very good bone and strong body with a level topline and good width behind, by far the strongest mover in the class covering the ground freely and without effort 2 Mercer’s Ch/IR CH King Of Helluland Keep Distance At Larkharbour I really liked this girl in profile and she is of excellent type and well proportioned, very attractive head with dark eye and clean lips, she is well developed in chest and forechest with deep brisket and a well ribbed body, shapely hindquarters and strong hocks , I would have just liked a little more from her on the move 3 West’s Bagglebears Moonstruck At Wildbears

MPB (0)

PB (3,1) Two nice puppies with lots to like, I felt the winner was the strongest on the move but I’m sure they will swap places regularly 1 and BPB Shadowrise Wild Fire, this 9 mth Brown was not in her best dress today and just lacking in topcoat which made her look a little leggy but what she had was rich in pigment, she has plenty of bone and stands on straight forelegs and good feet, she has a strong neck and firm topline and broad rump, just looking a little too tucked up around the abdomen but once in full coat this image will improve, 2 Hietschold Davistell Babee Love At Chrishelkate (ai) feminine head of better proportions than the winner and she has such an endearing expression with a lovely dark eye and neat ears framing her face, she didn’t do herself any favours on the stack as she tended to stand with her front legs too far back which pushed her front forward making her look unbalanced, however on going over her everything is where is should be with a good lay of shoulder and enough ribbing, she is well boned with large deep feet and good hind angulation. Just a little loose in front on the move.

JB (6,4) 1 Adair’s Chateaunewf Make My Day For Darebear just 12 mths but lots to like, she has size and substance without losing femininity and was presented in very good coat and condition, she is well developed in head for her age with width to skull and strong square muzzle, forelegs are well boned and feet of a good size however she did tend to turn a leg out when stacked but at just 12 months she has plenty of time to mature and strengthen, I liked her length of neck and front construction and she has a strong backline and loin, she covers the ground freely and easily maintaining her shape, a very promising exhibit 2 Davis Sasquatch Dream Your Dreams 16mth b with one of the most attractive heads of the day, so beautifully proportioned with dark eye and small ears held close, she has ample bone and good feet and a very good topline, she is an easy mover but not quite as strong behind as the winner on the away. Not an easy decision between these two as each has so much to like.

GB (6) 1 Coldwells Twillian Gate Villustrious Among Zentaur (imp Bel) a beautiful 14mth girl with a feminine head and eye, good muzzle and clean tight lips, I loved her shape and balance and she has ample bone all through, deep in chest with tidy elbows, broad well muscled hindquarters and strong parallel hocks, in profile she covers the ground with great freedom of stride but on the away is just a little close behind 2 Smiths Newettas Precious In Brown For Comfortcove JW (imp Dnk) a very shapely brown girl, rather on the small side but whose profile I really liked, she has a very pretty head with gentle slope between the eyes to a short square muzzle, strong neck and sufficient bone and is nicely angulated in the fore, she is well ribbed with a level topline and medium length well furnished tail,, very sound and ground covering but I would have liked a bit more of her 3 Hosies Mississippi-Missouri Vellie For Shadowrise (imp Svk)

PGB (3,1) 1 Popples Mileoak Loch Noir a medium size black, quite an elegant youngster with femininity in abundance, she was presented in lovely coat, very pleasing head properties with dark tight eye and well set well used ears, she stands straight in front on decent sized feet, body is well ribbed with a firm level topline and she is very shapely in the rear and light on her feet as she moved easily around the ring, to be critical I would have liked a fraction more bone but she has enough for her size. 2 Alexander’s Vodahund La Prima Vera, very well off for bone and strongly made all through, I would have liked a better neck length and I preferred the shoulders of the winner but this girl has a good depth of chest and is firm in topline with broad rump and good hind angulation, I preferred the easier movement of the winner.

LB (6) This along with the open class was one of the most difficult to judge but for all the right reasons with good quality and soundness right down the line 1) Thompson’s Saskinbears True Blue For Safeharbour JW I really loved the head on this 2 yr girl, she is so feminine and pretty but without losing any strength, stop is minimal and muzzle short with well fitting lips, she has a lovely dark eye and super keen expression, neck is strong and shoulders well laid, she has a super topline with she is well built in the rear and uses what she has to move freely and easily around the ring with good driving action, my only negative comment is that she could have better feet. 2 Baldocks Ohoi’s About Damn Time (imp dnk) a well balanced girl with good head properties and a clean strong muzzle, she stands straight in front on good sized feet and with plenty of bone, body is well ribbed with deep chest and good width to her hindquarters, I just preferred the topline and rear angulation of the winner but close up in terms of overall construction and movement 3 Baxter and Morris Newfashion This is Me

OB (7) Another cracking class full of quality 1 BB, Best Brown B, RBIS and Best Brown In Show Coldwells CH Zentaur This Is Jam Hot JW Sh.CM OSW a medium sized 5 yr brown in great shape, strong but still so feminine, very attractive headpiece with clean square muzzle, small well place eyes and so attentive to her handler, forelegs parallel and leading to good sized deep feet, text book topline and rear angles, strong and easy on the move displaying powerful drive, presented in good double coat and feathering, a real show girl who didn’t put a foot wrong. A well deserved BB and RBIS. 2 RBB and best black B Bulls King Of Helluland Black Organza 3 yrs old and so much to like, completely different to the winner, but, I could appreciate her size and construction and she absolutely powered around the ring, she has a good head with width to skull and a short deep muzzle with lovely dark eye and well set ears. Strong in body with deep chest and plenty of heart room, I could imagine her out on the water doing what she was bred for. She pushed the winner all the way but in the class just lost her topline ever so slightly when stacked. In the challenge for RBB her powerful and ground covering movement gave her the edge 3 Farrars Darkpeak Starlight Express I liked her shape and size and she has a dark eye and kind expression and is well off for bone, completed a trio of quality bitches.

Special O B Black Another quality class (7,1) 1 Bulls Sandbears What Ya Fancy At Ravenshore 2 year medium size girl, immaculate in presentation with not a hair out of place. I found her to be very feminine and elegant with an attractive head piece and expressive eyes, framed by neat close fitting ears, she has a strong but elegant neck and a good lay of shoulder, possibly a fraction long in body but no compromise to her topline, good width of thigh and strong hocks, so sound on the move displaying even and flowing movement but could still tighten in front 2 Smiths Comfortcove Pixie Dust 4 yr b, larger all round than the winner with ample bone and substance, I would have liked a little more depth to her muzzle and a less obvious stop but she has dark well placed eyes and a feminine outlook, her strong neck flows into well laid shoulders and she has a firm level topline and good width to hindquarters which were well muscled and she has an easy action as she goes round. 3 Mills and Chatburns CH Zentaur Drop It Like It’s Hot JW OSW.

Special Open B Brown (3) 1 Palletts Yulla For Sheenmarie Von Baywatch (imp ) JW this 2yr girl impressed me a lot on the stack, she is very well proportioned with strong bone and is well covered. I loved her feminine head and attentive expression, she stands straight in front with forelegs well underneath her, she has depth to chest and plenty of heart room, strong level topline and moderately angled in the rear with good width to her hindquarters and strong hocks, Considered her for higher honours but on the day I just preferred the ground covering action of the RBB 2 Coldwells Zentaur The Jam Is Pumping 2.5 yr old daughter of my BB, out of a smaller mould than 1 but very well balanced, good head properties with clean square muzzle and small eyes which yield almost a quizzical expression, she is well constructed in front with strong bone, a good lay of shoulder and depth of chest, topline like her mother is textbook and she has well angulated in the rear, sound and true on the move but not the strength of the winner on the out and back 3 Shadowrise Wildfire

Special Open B Landseer (1) Oukaya Thank Your Lucky Stars (imp Fra) 2 yr b quite striking and in good coat, she makes a pleasing and balanced profile. Well shaped headpiece, with deep muzzle and tight eyes, she has good bone and substance all through with a broad rump and good hind angulation, I found her a little weak in rear pasterns on the stack and she tends to hock in ever so slightly, but on the move it all came together and she covered the ground with ease and good driving action.
