South Western Great Dane Club

Firstly I’d like to thank the club for the invitation to Judge. After 27 years of showing danes and avoiding judging I have recently agreed to take on appointments - this was my first club appointment and I am grateful to all the exhibitors for their entries and taking my decisions with good grace. I thoroughly enjoyed my appointment so this will not be my last time taking to the centre of the ring!

Showing is a beauty competition judged against our breed standard which states cat-like feet – nail husbandry is extremely important to keep those toes well arched and close – far too many with long nails spoiling the feet completely. That said I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t have one dog back off when judging – credit to you all. Remember there is no perfect dane, all had faults some more than others, I judged them according to the breed standard and was very happy with my principal winners - however you all take the best dog/s home!

JD (2,1) 1 Paolantonio’s Tayhamblue One Man Can Claim. 12 month Fawn Black Mask, stood alone, very raw adolescent male, potentially at an awkward growth stage which reflected in his uncoordinated movement.

YD (3) 1 Munro’s Roucandane Stolen Kisses. 23 month Fawn Black Mask, still has some maturing and filling out to do but what a lovely balanced outline he has. Handlers inexperience shows as she didn’t realise he was pacing - that will come in time, he moved well when she got him going. Lovely feet! Seriously considered him for RBD - just lost out on maturity and handler’s experience not getting the best out of him in the line-up. 2 Watson-Hall’s Adoreadane Frank Senatra (AI) 19 month Harli, beautifully marked pure white underground with torn black patches, different in type to 1, stronger head, good flat bone to forelegs. Longer in loin with a rounded topline that spoils the balance of outline especially on the move - he still has maturing to do so topline could settle with age. Well handled! 3 Mackenzie’s Islandrose A Nod To Vincent At Carsan (IKC)

PG (1) 1 Hitcham’s Dainoak Tempus Vincit At Chamith. 3 year old Harli, reasonably well marked, pleasing head with medium size ears set high on skull, good length of neck. Belly well drawn up. Moved out covering the ground well. Would benefit from more rear angulation and a better croup.

LD (3) 1 Lawton’s Garsak Sir Mason. 5 year old Fawn Black Mask, presented in excellent condition. Presents a nice balanced elegant shape overall on the stack. Good head with lovely expression, clean, with no loose skin. Has correct flat bone, beautiful cat-like feet, good depth of chest reaching elbows that are well under the body. On the move he has the required free lithe, springy movement. He knows his job! RBD 2 Henshall’s Calchas Bryan The Brave. 2 year old Harli, correctly marked, different type to 1, stronger in head with more bone/substance but presented a nice picture overall. Well chiselled face, good length of neck flowing into good shoulders. Correct depth of chest with flat bone to the forelegs. Difficult to assess on the move as was unsettle looking for his owner. 3 Hitcham’s Belarosedane Satchimo Bowe At Chamith

SP VD (1) 1 Burton’s CH Ravendane Deal Me In With Elbarevol. 8 year old Mantle, beautifully marked with a frosted face, he may of stood alone but is an outstanding example of the breed even at this age a credit to his owner. Masculine head dark, with a beautiful blunt nose, flowing into a good neck and good shoulders. A deep brisket reaching the elbows and well sprung ribs. Second thigh well developed and a good turn of stifle. Carrying a little too much weight. Pushed hard for BVIS.

SP O Blue D (2,1) 1 Mackenzie’s Islandrose A Nod To Vincent At Carsan (IKC). 22 month Blue, lovely deep slate blue colour. This boy is still very immature at the minute, not surprisingly as he has a huge frame to fill. He gives a balanced overall picture. Good head with no loose skin, leading into a very long neck. Correct flat bone and nice cat-like feet. Hopefully will drop into his rear angle with maturity. Would like to see him in a years time.

SP O Black D (2) 1 Macdonald’s Zeus Nero Von Adamantium Of Ranaldane (IMP DEU) IR JCH CEN JW. 3 year old Black, Black is black with dark eyes and dark nails to match. Presented in gleaming condition. Powerful overall look with a strong male head, lovely dark eyes. Has that look of dash and dare. Free moving, covering the ground well using his muscular hindquarters to his advantage, slightly long in loin. 2 Hitcham’s Belarosedane Satchimo Bowe At Chamith. 2 year old black, black with an acceptable amount of white. Strong masculine head, overall height and body ratios are good. In good body condition. Front feet tend to be a little ten to two.

SP O Harl D (2) 1 Henshall’s Calchas Bryan The Brave. See LD critique - he was much more settled on the move in this class. 2 Hitcham’s Dainoak Tempus Vincit At Chamith. See PGD critique

Sp O Mantle D (1) 1 Pocock’s CH/LUX/SWISS CH Tamzdane Empower Mint JW. 3 year old Mantle, beautifully marked. Wow this boy filled the eye – lovely outline with a real look at me attitude, this boy knows he’s something special. Masculine head not overdone in any way with a lovely dark eye. Neck flows into beautiful layback of shoulder. Muscular rear with correct long and well developed second thigh, good turn of stifle. Moved like a pro - presented in tip top condition. Pleased to also award him BD, BOS & RBIS

OD (3,1) 1 Martin’s Keishant Zeus. 5 year old Fawn Black Mask, good male head with a nice length of neck. Forelegs perfectly straight with big flat bone leading to correct feet with well arched toes. Very deep brisket reaching elbows that are well under the body. Lacking in depth of second thigh. 2 Henshall’s Calchas Accord. 2 year old Harli, well marked nice sized male. Different type to 1 he has more bone and substance. Adequate length of neck, nice depth of body with a good tuck up. Tail set could be better. Moved out well.

MPB (1) 1 White’s Jutlander’s Eat Your Heart Out. 6 month Fawn Black Mask, just a baby but absolutely loved her. Nice balanced outline. Head with correct length of foreface and brow over the lovely dark eye. Good length of neck leading to well laid back shoulder. Good depth of chest with elbows well under the body. Confidently strode out. Very pleased to also award her BPIS.

PB (1) 1 Prazak & Dickson’s Kaallana Jawska Seraphina. 11 month Black, Black is Black with an overall balanced outline there is lots to like about this girl. Nice head with Triangular medium sized ears set high on the skull and folded forward. Good body. Where this girl won in a later class (Sp O Black B) was her movement her action was lithe, springy & free, hocks moving freely with drive and covering the ground well.

JB (1) 1 Ferguson’s Renescent Too Hot To Handle For Chateaudain LUX JCH. 16 months Blue, steel blue young bitch who presents a beautifully balanced outline. Broad muzzle with Skull proportionally narrow giving the appearance of equal breadth throughout, lips hanging squarely in front forming a right angle with upper line of foreface. Body still has some maturing to do which is where she lost out to a more mature bitch in a later class (Sp O Blue B)

YB (2, 1) 1 Page & Concannon’s Novavida Livin The Dream. 19 month Black, a substantial bitch with a pleasing outline. She has a strong head supported on an adequate length of neck. She has a deep brisket and well sprung ribs. Enough second thigh and enough turn of stifle. Her rear movement was not her best point today which is where she lost out in a later class (Sp O Black B).

PGB (5,2) 1 Merwick’s Taradanes Star Vision For Saalan. 2 year old brindle, evenly marked brindle with a beautiful feminine head, giving the appearance of equal breadth throughout and a nice dark eye. Super length well arched neck into well placed shoulders. Good depth of chest. Covered the ground well with the required lithe, springy and free movement. Would prefer a slightly shorter loin. Well handled to advantage! 2 Henshall’s Calchas Addition (AI). 3 year Old Harli, beautifully marked, a heavier type than one, overall balanced outlined with a good spring of rib. Forelegs with big flat bone. Good depth of second thigh. Just didn’t move out covering the ground as well as 1. 3 Evan’s Belarosedane Beany Babybel.

LB (6,1) 1 Baker’s Taradanes Shining Star Over Preveli. 2 year old Fawn Black Mask, beautifully balanced outline, strongly though elegantly built. Well chiselled face with flat skull. Good depth of chest with elbows well under body. Good Croup with correct tail set. Moved out adequately in the class. I seriously considered this bitch for RBB but she really lacked enthusiasm on the move in the challenge. 2 Martin’s Keishant Athena. 3 year old Fawn Black Mask, different type to 1 taller and more elegant outline. Beautiful correct head with level planes and square drop of lip. Lovely long arched neck into well laid back shoulders. Would benefit from a better depth of second thigh. Lacked drive on the move. 3 Dyson’s Primus Diamonds Are Forever Samdice.

Sp VB (3,1) 1 White’s Jutlanders Are You Ready JW (IMP DAN). 7 year old Fawn Black Mask, lovely frosted face fawn. Excellent example of the breed. Long foreface with dark eyes leading to a well arched neck and a decent shoulder. Good spring of rib and well tucked under elbows. Nice topline with a good croup giving a pleasant overall picture. Another carrying a little too much weight. I was pleased to later award her BVIS 2 Giedraityte’s La Toya Jackson Arcando (IMP RUS). 10 year old Black, frosted face black, giving a lot away in age for this breed to 1. Lovely to see a dane of this age. Forelegs straight with big flat bone. Movement given her age didn’t flow. Hope she enjoyed her day out.

Nice head with a good length of foreface, clean well arched neck, Good topline with strong back and loins. Muscular hindquarters that helped her drive on the move. 2 Pocock’s Tamzdane Appley Ever After JW. 22 month Harli, lighter marked harli than the winner and still maturing. Good Head, lovely length of neck with a good arch, leading to well laid back shoulders. Sp O Mantle B (2) 1 Hayter’s Damarkann Raydiance With Stevarah, 4 year old Mantle, I liked the substance on this bitch. She has a nice side profile which won her the class along with her strength of topline, correct croup and rear assembly. Front feet unfortunately let her down.2 Hayter’s Damarkann Secret Dare With Stevarah. 20 month Mantle, not the substance of 1 but has a lovely long well arched neck and a well drawn up belly. Toes are slightly long giving a more hare like than cat like appearance. Beautifully handled!

OB (6,2) 1 Armour & Hooker’s Ch Garsak Fire And Ice. 2 year old Fawn Black Mask, I have admired this bitch from ringside and she certainly didn’t disappoint. She has the most beautiful head with a long foreface, flat skull, chiselled face well filled in below the eyes. Long arched necked. The head piece just tops off the balanced outline of this bitch. She oozes quality from the tip of her nose to the tip of her tail. She moved with drive covering the ground well. I had no doubt in later awarding her BB and she was challenged hard by the dog but also won BIS. Congratulations she is beautiful!
