JUDGES CRITIQUE FOR West Riding Dachshund Association OPEN SHOW

Held on Saturday 23rd November 2024

My apologies for the slight delay in sending my critique (I normally send within a week) – the morning after this show we flew to USA for Thanksgiving with family. I planned to send from there, but left my notes etc in the car! Many thanks to the WRDA for their invitation to judge at this breed show with such a lovely friendly atmosphere, and to my steward Mike Wedge, who kept everything running smoothly. I was delighted to see three of my main winners go through to BIS, Reserve BIS and BPIS under judge Hazel Chance. Congratulations to them all.

Miniature Smooth haired Dachshunds

Puppy Dog (2-1)

1st & BPIB & BPIS = Kents Lokmadi Charles Rex

Although he stood alone, what a cracking little pup this 9 month old red boy is. Well put together all through with an attractive head with roman nose and correct eye shape. He moved sound as a pound and with good profile action. Should have a great future.

Puppy Bitch (2)

1st = Kents Lokmadi Don’t Bring Lulu

B/T bitch who had a pretty head with almond shaped eye. Good prosternum. Compact though the body with fair angulation front and rear. Topline was a little soft. Short hocks.

2nd = Bosworths Cremadex Inspiration at Louromi

Dapple girl. Pretty well shaped head. Good prosternum for her age. Pleasing topline. Finer boned than the winner. Moved OK but would definitely benefit from a little more ringcraft so that she uses herself to better advantage.

Junior Dog (1)

1st & BOS = Corominas Scenterbay Rafael for Ruichango

I loved this beautifully balanced young red lad. For me he has correct length of body to leg ratio. Excellent prosternum, topline and underline. Short hocks. Moved so soundly and gave the BOB girl a run for her money. I’m sure he has a bright future.

Junior Bitch (3-1)

1st = Taylors Debbiejay Tickety Boo

B/T girl with a lovely flow from her head through her neck to her shoulders. Well balanced with good feet and reasonable bone. Moved soundly on the up and back and well in profile.

2nd = Heralds Winterfield Lady In Red

There wasn’t much between these two girls although I preferred the head on this compact sound red girl to the winners’. But she was a little longer through the loin than the winner. Good bone. Short hocks. Correct length of tail. Like the winner she moved soundly coming and going and with drive in profile.

Post Grad Dog/Bitch (7)

1st & BOB = Lucas’ Carpaccio Red Crystal

What a pretty, feminine girl this red is. In her prime. A beautiful neck leading into an excellent layback of shoulder and return of upper arm. Excellent topline. Good feet, correct bone and well let down hocks. Moved as I knew she would. It was a tough decision between 1st and 2nd and could have changed at any time!

2nd = Corominas’ Scenterbay Rafael for Ruichango

(As Before)

3rd = Heralds Winterfield Lucky Star

Limit Dog/Bitch (1-1)

Open Dog (2-1)

1st = Careys Donnadoon Dark Moonbeam for Debbiejay

B/T boy with attractive, well balanced head. Fair prosternum. Enough neck. Good bone and feet. Well let down hocks. He moved sound but dropped his topline and went a little flat over the croup, which let him down on the move.

Open Bitch (2-1)

1st = Walkers Donnadoon Little Dreamer at Dorenian

Red brindle girl. Balanced head. Good topline. Carrying a little too much weight. Nice feet and bone. Well let down hocks. Moved soundly enough.

Smooth Haired Dachshunds

Puppy Dog (0)

Junior Dog/Bitch (3-2)

1st = Wyeths Rayol Texas Ranger

Lovely shape to this boy’s head with a strong punishing underjaw. Correct prosternum leading through to his underline. Excellent neck and shoulders. Strong topline with slight arch over the loin. Nice bone and excellent feet. Moved well coming and going and with excellent front reach.

Post Grad Dog/Bitch (2-1)

1st BOS & Best Red = Lucas’ Tramardachs Booty Licious

Pretty, quality girl with a lot to like. So feminine through her well shaped head with a lovely dark almond eye and correct set on to hear ears. Excellent prosternum. Good topline and she was well ribbed back. Enough bone and good feet. Moved well in profile with good reach in front.

Limit Dog/Bitch (4-2)

1st = Lucas’ Tramardachs Hairy Fairy

Another quality red girl with a lot to like about her. Well balanced front and rear angulation. Loved her length to height ratio. Good prosternum. Excellent ribbing. Correct loin. Well set on tail. Moved with ‘enthusiasm’ on the up and back, but I could see some good reach in front!

2nd = Clarks Skydax Walking on Sunshine von Wilarkhund

Much more substance to this B/T girl, than the winner and a shade longer on the leg than the winner. Attractive planes to her head with almond shaped eye. Ears were set on high and of good shape. Good prosternum. Legs set well under the body. Moved well.

Open Dog (2-1)

1st & BOB & RBIS = Starkeys Carpaccio Magnum PI at Hamoura

Quality B/T boy and at 3 years old he is just coming into his prime. My Dictaphone says “Everything in the right place!” Masculine head with punishing underjaw. Good length of neck let into well placed shoulder and return of upper arm. Fair spring of rib. Excellent topline with slight arch over the loin. Super bone and feet. He put it all together and used it all on the move. Sound as a pound with real reach and drive. I was over the moon to see him go RBIS to a super Mini Wire. Well done!

Open Bitch (3-1)

1st = Armstrongs Owlander First Edition

Feminine girl with lighter bone than 2nd. Attractive head with reasonable underjaw. Excellent prosternum and shoulder angulation. Well ribbed back. Good topline. Nice feet. Short hocks. Moved well.

2nd = Clarks Tiesal Debutante von Wilarkhund

This B/T girl was listed in the catalogue as being 8 years old. I could see that she had some really nice qualities, which were sadly overshadowed by her carrying too much weight. Attractive head with good shape to her eye. Good bone. Moved OK.

Miniature Wire Haired Dachshunds

Puppy Dog/Bitch (2-1)

1st & BPIB= Dances Emem Joyful Sunshine

My Dictaphone says “What a lovely, promising little poppet”! - and she is! Feminine head. Fair length of neck leading into a good shoulder and upper arm assembly. Correct height to length ratio. Excellent rear angulation. Good bone and feet. Moved as sound as a pound and with excellent profile drive and extension, but still enjoying herself – aptly named!

Junior Dog/Bitch (5-4)

1st = Hamblings Tythe Tic Toc around Chaseover

Pretty head with a nice dark almond eye on this girl, who was a little overwhelmed by the noise in the hall. Correct size and bone. Good rear quarters. Well let down hocks. She moved soundly, but needs to get her head into the game to show off her very pleasing conformation.

Post Grad Dog/Bitch (3-1)

1st = Clements’s Springdac Selsa N’Shake

This pretty girl was a nice size and well balanced throughout. Good bone and feet. Good prosternum. Excellent topline. She had a slightly better front than 2nd and used it all well on the move, which was what won her this class.

2nd = Kays Kaytian The Suncaller

This boy was of a nice type, I really liked his very masculine head, with no trace of coarseness. Excellent topline and correct underline. Very good rear quarters with the best let down hocks, which he used well on the move – driving well and totally sound behind. He was unlucky to meet 2 top drawer girls in both of his classes.

Limit Dog/Bitch (4-1)

1st & BOS = Dances Emem Hazel Sunshine JW

Pretty feminine girl but with strength and substance – what’s not to like? Good length of neck set into a well laid back shoulder and good return of upper arm. Excellent topline with correct underline. Good bone and feet. Moved with drive from her hocks and good reach in front. Lovely!

2nd = Kays Kaytian The Suncaller

(As Before)

3rd = Walkers Stargang Fantasy

Open Dog (3-1)

1st BOB & BIS = 25 Corominas’ Ch Almarxils Diego for Ruichango JW (Imp Esp) This boy was literally the star of the show! Not only did he tick all the boxes for me, but for the BIS judge too! Lovely balanced, masculine head. The best of necks leading into a super front assembly. Well ribbed back with a short strong loin. Super topline. Correct length of body to height ratio. Excellent rear angulation with well let down hocks. He moved as I knew he would. Sound and with an easy, extending profile action. Loved him and no surprise to see afterwards that he already has his title! Well Done!

2nd = Kents Barratini Du Bebe at Lokmadi

Pleasing head with almond eye. Well balanced. Good front angulation and bone. This boy was a little shorter on the leg than my winner. Well let down hocks. Moved sound, just dropped his topline a little on the move.

Open Bitch (1)

1st = Dances Emem Hope for Sunshine JW

Litter sister to the Limit winner and with many of the same virtues. Balanced. Feminine, with good bone. Short hocks. Just carrying a little too much weight for me, which affected her topline on the move. Quality none the less.
