WINDSOR GUNDOG SOCIETY OPEN SHOW 2 OCTOBER 2024

LABRADOR RETRIEVER

I have always enjoyed exhibiting at this lovely friendly show, so it was a pleasure to judge here. Very glad the heavy rain of the previous day held off! Thank you to all who brought their dogs under me, it was a real pleasure judging a lovely quality entry. Thanks also to my cheerful and efficient stewards Jenny and Sue.

MINOR PUPPY

No entries.

PUPPY (7, 3a)

1. K METCALFE’S TRENDLEWOOD ITS ONLY LOVE TO BAILEYDALE

Black bitch, 11 months. Compactly built but with good substance, very balanced both when standing and on the move. Presents herself well. Appealing head and intelligent expression. Stands on good bone and neat well-padded feet. Clean, strong neck and well laid-back shoulder with good forechest, positioning her legs right under her, stood straight and true at all times. Muscular hindquarters used well in her tidy and purposeful movement, pushing well off strong hocks and keeping level topline. Super double coat, just on the blow. BEST PUPPY IN BREED.

2. REARDON’S SARANDEN LEAP OF FAITH TO OTHAMCOURT

Pale yellow bitch, 11 months. Quality throughout, close decision between her and the winner, just not quite the finish yet but it will come and then she will trouble the best. Longer cast than the winner but beautifully balanced throughout. Feminine head with kind expression and good pigment. Double coated. Well boned and with good compact feet. Loved her elegant neck and shoulder. Showed well, holding her topline well at all times, using a well-clad tail to advantage. Good turn of stifle and strong hindquarters, moved effortlessly and smoothly. Has a bright future.

3. DAVEY’S CLANFIELD GUARDSMAN

JUNIOR (3, 1a)

1. JURY’S HANDIALLA LADY IN RED AT BALLAREMUERA

Appealing pale yellow bitch, presented a very attractive profile. Pretty and feminine head and expression with pleasing length of muzzle. Good pigment. Clean lines throughout. Good front assembly with powerful neck and good topline flowing into super otter tail. Well boned, standing on good feet. Well angled and strong hindquarters. Correct coat. Moved neatly, would have liked just a touch more oomph on the move to complete the picture.

2. GOODWIN’S MCFARWINS FLASHING LIGHTS

Another yellow bitch of lovely type, many of the same comments apply. Kind head with sweet expression, obviously willing to please and very attentive to handler. Rangier than winner but still balanced with pleasing length of leg. Clean through neck and shoulder leading into well-held level topline. Strong and muscular hindquarters with good turn of stifle and width of second thigh. Just needs to tighten up a little on the move.

YEARLING (1, 1a)

NOVICE (3, 2a)

1. REARDON’S SARANDEN LEAP OF FAITH TO OTHAMCOURT

2nd in Puppy.

GRADUATE (5, 1a)

1. LONGHURST’S HURSTMEON JUST MY CUP OF TEA

Black bitch, compactly built, with good substance and balance. Presented in glorious gleaming condition with super double coat and otter tail. Appealing and feminine head with kind expression. Well off for bone, and strong and powerful through neck and shoulder. Neat feet. Level topline held well. Broad in loin, with muscular hindquarters and well let down hocks. A little uncertain on the move initially, but once settled with handler, moved powerfully with reach and drive. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

2. PERKINS’ MCFARWINS GREY LEGACY BY KEENINSPIRES

Pale yellow dog with kind head, masculine but not coarse in any way. Used his ears well and very attentive to handler. Rangier than winner, standing over a lot of ground, but nicely balanced throughout - this boy looked like he could jump a five-bar gate with ease. In good condition, carrying just the right amount of weight. Good bone and substance. Powerful and strong through neck and shoulder. Deep through chest with well-barrelled ribs. Level topline flowing into well-clad tail. Just a tad untidy on the move.

3. SADLER’S TALIFEN HUMAN TOUCH

POST GRADUATE (5, 1a)

1. A & J METCALFE’S BAILEYDALE ROCKET MAN JW

Upstanding pale yellow dog, immediately eye-catching, and did not disappoint on further examination. Head masculine with kind and intelligent expression, and good muzzle length, demonstrated calm willingness to please. Stands on good bone and compact well-padded feet. Stood straight and true at all times. Lovely reach of neck and well-angulated shoulder, matched with strong hindquarters and hocks which he used to advantage. Best mover of the day, powered around the ring with reach and drive. Not quite in his best coat today, but overall presented a very attractive picture. BEST OF BREED.

2. COLLINS’ FOXRUSH JOYFULL JW

Very attractive yellow bitch of super type. Loved her head, pleasingly broad in skull but still pretty and feminine, with good pigment. Strongly built but very neat and balanced throughout. Well-boned and with good feet. Clean and powerful through neck and shoulder with well angled front, legs right under her. Lovely turn of stifle and good broad hindquarters with strong hocks held perfectly vertical when standing. Was standing straight and true every time I looked at her. Another lovely mover displaying reach and drive, and excellent footfall.

3. PERKINS’ MCFARWINS GREY LEGACY BY KEENINSPIRES

OPEN DOG (3, 2a)

1. SADLER’S TALIFEN GENTLEMAN JACK

Stood alone but a deserving winner. Attractive darker yellow dog in good condition and presented well. Kindest head and expression, good pigment, used his ears well. Good bone. In lovely coat with correct harsh top layer. Deep through chest and with good barrel rib. Level topline. Strong hindquarters with super second thigh, and powerful hocks held vertically on the stand, used with good effect on the move. Moved steadily and with drive.

OPEN BITCH

No entries.

VETERAN (2, 1a)

1. COLLINS’ CARROMER WORTH A GLANCE AT KASPAIR

Alone in this class but quality bitch well deserving of her first place. 7 years old, pretty black, appealed for her gentle and melting expression with good eye colour and well-placed ears, used well. Neatly made and balanced throughout with strong neck and well-placed shoulders, matched with strong angulation at rear. Thick double coat. Whilst I usually dislike the expression about veterans ‘enjoying their day’, she really was, and showed herself with enthusiasm. Super mover, positive and powerful, real pleasure to watch her on the go.
