 NATIONAL GUNDOG 4TH AUGUST 2024

Thanks to National Gundog for their hospitality at this show and to my two very capable ring stewards, who kept things rolling. I enjoyed the day and thank everyone for their entries. I was glad the weather held and was not too warm for the dogs. Unfortunately at this time of year coats were lacking a little. I did find a few dodgy mouths which did affect placings and would kindly ask that you check your dogs teeth, as although they may well have been good as a pup, things can change once they start growing etc. In my Open Dog class, there where many dogs who went card less who on a different day in different company, who knows! I was privileged to have the opportunity to go over your dogs and found that his was my best class of the day.

Veteran 3

1. Litherlands OAKHOUSE OLIVER REED 7 year old black with well balanced, pleasant head, with good use of ears and good width to skull. Decent length of neck to well placed shoulders and good angulation to front and also rear. Good proportions to body. Level top line leading to tail which was well set on. Not quite in full coat today. Moved well holding top line and level tail carriage. Best Veteran Dog

2. Haslam’s MANORWELL BUCKSKIN AT LYNQUEST 7 year old yellow, another who was not in full coat which did effect his overall profile. Not as balanced in head to winner in my opinion and also preferred winners tail set. Was of good bone, and was of nice weight.

3. Bills VETYBONBETTY CHOCOLATE BOX

Minor Puppy 4

1. Smiths FLYENPYG JURGEN CHOPP Black puppy of nearly 8 months of age. Everything

was in proportion with him and was lovely in profile. Head with kind expression, well balanced with good eye colour. Good length to neck, good angulation to front with good depth to body, good ratio to legs and body. Good bend of stifle and hocks well let down. Won the class on his movement as he really did move with drive.

2. Allen’s TIMOURON LADY KILLER Dark chocolate puppy of 7 months, another with a well balanced head but for me, eyes detracted a little from his expression. Overall had a nice outline, with decent front angulation, good in fore-chest. Was in good coat. Still to firm up on his top line. Not the drive when moving as winner but still acceptable.

3. Disley ACREDAM GOLDEN CRUNCH

Puppy 9

1. Druggan’s BALLADOOLE BLACK TIE 10 month old black who is maturing nicely and of

good size for age, who was lovely in profile. Nothing overdone on him, very balanced puppy. He had a good, balanced head, with a gentle expression. Strong in neck leading to well placed shoulders, with good angulation fore and aft. In good coat. Showed himself off well and moved out well holding his top line and level tail carriage. Best Dog Puppy and Best Puppy in Breed. Shame they were unable to stop for the challenge.

2. Smiths FLYENPYG JUGEN CHOPP As per Minor Puppy

3. Mclellan SARANDEN I’M ON FIRE

Junior 6 (1)

1. Rawlinson/Balshaw SHANORRELL SEAMUS COLEMAN AT HALSHIMOOR 16 month

old black, maturing well, nicely shaped head, good eye colour with alert expression. A little lighter in bone than 2nd. Good overall outline with good angles to front and rear. One of a few dogs today with good harsh coat to touch. Felt he had a little more drive on the move which clinched his place.

 2. Johnson CREMINO CELEBRITY JW Nearly 18 month old black who unfortunate to meet winner. A lot to like about him, he was balanced with level top line, good rear quarters, tail straight off the back but held a little higher compared to winner.

3. Swift’s HAMPSBECK SCRUPLES

Yearling 2

1. Swift’s HAMPSBECK SCRUPLES 3rd in previous class against two good dogs, this 16 month old yellow had a lot to like about him. Masculine head, but not course with good eye colour, broad in skull with decent length of muzzle. Larger framed dog, carrying the correct amount of weight. Good amount of bone on strong legs, elbows well underneath body. Good in fore-chest. Nice outline when standing correctly. In good coat. True otter tail. Moved well.

2. Perkins McFARWINS GREY LEGACY BY KEENINSPIRES Another yellow of same age as winner and slightly lighter framed than winner and shorter coupled. Made the best of himself in the ring. Head very similar to winner. Good bone. Preferred the front assembly and movement of winner.

Maiden 3

1. Smiths FLYENPYG JURGEN CHOPP as per M.P.

2. Young’s POTTERSPINEY MY SOVEREIGN Yellow, just 13 months old and still a little on

the immature side, especially against the dogs in his previous class, when considering his overall balance and profile. However, saying that he did have a pleasant head with good pigmentation and eye of good colour and shape. Well presented with good bone and correct amount of weight. Just needs a little more time on his side.

3. Edwards FREWLINGS JUSTIN ROSE AT BEARSTONE

Novice 4

1. Swift’s HAMPSBECK SCRUPLES as per Yearling.

2. Mitchell’s DARMILYE DARE TO DREAM 10 month old black who was 4th in puppy.

Good in profile. Very attentive to handler with good use of ears and kind expression to head. Enough bone, with decent front angulation and good turn of stifle to rear. Good feet. Movement let him down today against winner as he just needs to tighten up in front.

3. Evans TRENDLEWOOD LONG TIME COMIN

Undergraduate 4

1. Bishop TREWINNARD VERO INTO DEMADON 14 month old black who had a good leg -

body ratio. Short coupled with good bend of stifle, decent amount of bone, good straight forelegs. I thought head was a little on the plain side for me although I did prefer it to 2nd placed dog. Did play handler up a little.

2. Ganney’s DARRABOL SAND DOLLAR Near 2 year old yellow of larger frame than winner who was in good coat and well turned out. Did not show to his potential today. Well off for bone with decent angulation to front, on straight forelegs. Little too much length in stifle making him look over angulated to rear.

3. Young’s POTTERSPINEY MY SOVEREIGN

Graduate8 (2)

1. Gentleman’s WYNFAUL REPEAT I was splitting hairs with the first two placings. This 2

years old black was a little heavier overall than 2nd but still well made, good balance in body with good angulation to front, good fore-chest and well boned. Not quite the length in neck as 2nd. Level top line and good tail set and tail. Not quite the drive as 2nd on the move. Balanced pleasant head.

2. Litherland’s OAKHOUSE ORLOVER 3 year old black who was one of only a few dogs who were in good hard condition. Happy disposition. Not overdone in anyway, pleasant well

balanced head, good length to neck with good angulation to front and rear. Balanced body and

when moving, moved with drive for handler. 3. Rose’s NETHERDENE SEA CAPTAIN Post Grad. 6(1)

1. Shirton’s WOOLMAN DAY DREAM BELIEVER Not the showman today, however, I don’t

believe the standard says they have to stand there and wag for Britain! Could not overlook this well put together black dog of 3 years. Kind, gentle head, leading to well placed shoulders, good angulation in front with legs tucked well under body. Good body to leg ratio, good bone and well let down hocks. Happy and true on the move.

2. Harvey-Major’s JUST THE JOKER IN LINJOR 2 year old yellow of different type to winner. Have watched him from a puppy with interest and similar remarks apply as to winner, but just preferred winners overall type.

3. Braddon TRENDLEWOOD ONE MORE TIME

Mid Limit 6(1)

1. Chapman’s DAISYPATCH JELLY TOT Two 6 year old yellows heading the placings in this

class. This one, built on strong lines, displaying a good outline in profile. He had a distinctive male head, which was not overdone in anyway, kind expression as was his disposition. In good coat, good bone, with decent length to legs and carrying the correct amount of weight.

2. Perkins CARROMER TEFUILA BY KEENINSPIRES Larger framed dog than winner and in equally good coat and bone. Similar in head to winner, with level top line carried on the move, but preferred tail carriage of winner.

3. Harris WINSLEYWOOD WELLINGTON

Limit 11 (2)

1. Hughes CINDERS SALTY SEA Have seen this dog from the ringside and only when you

have gone over him to you appreciate his qualities. Stood off his handler whom he only had eyes for, to display a very balanced profile. Good angulation to front and rear, good in fore- chest. Head very appealing with good layback of shoulders. Level top line and tail held straight off the back when moving. Good bone and well let down hocks with tight feet..Pleased to award him R.C.C.

2. Finney’s CARPENNY KIPLING Another who have viewed from the ringside and appreciate the qualities once one had gone over him. I don’t think he moved with the same enthusiasm as I have seen him on different occasions, which lost him his place today, also slightly different expression to winner which I preferred on winner.

3. Boulden RUMHILL FIRECRACKER

Open 12 (2)

1. Johnson’s SH.CH. CREMINO CALABRESE What can I say about this dog that has no

doubt already been said. To me he is a dog that meets the ‘fit for function’ tag and could just imagine him doing a good days work in the field. He is so well balanced from head to tail, lovely kind expression to his head, leading to good length to neck on well placed shoulders, good angulation to front and rear, level top line, good length to leg, good bone, well let down hocks, otter tail straight off the back. Lovely showman with that little bit extra you want from a dog and moved around with great drive and ring presence. Dog C.C. and Best of Breed. Did make the cut for BIS.

2. Hodge’s IR SH.CH./SH.CH. NAIKEN EAST MEETS WEST (AI) JW Another dog who catches the eye in the ring. Presented well in good coat and at one with handler. Always stood four square and good in profile, good barrel ribs, level top line, held on the move. Good quarters with well let down hocks on neat feet. True otter tail never stopped wagging.

3. Woodley’s SH CH ALKHAMHURST MOMENT OF TRUTH

 Sp. Beg. 6(1)

1. Rose’s NETHERDENE SEA CAPTAIN 3rd in Graduate class, this 2 year old yellow showed

and behaved better in this class to win him his place. When he is showing for handler one can

appreciate his decent profile, good strong loin and quarters, move out ok once settled.

2. Young/Parkes POTTERZURI MYSTIC SAIN Another two year old, black in colour who was

of a heavier type to winner. Was not showing to his best today I felt. Deep in body and for me

carrying a few extra unneeded pounds.

3. Foster’s ROCHEVALE BEAL
