Paignton & District Fanciers' Association

Breed: Dobermann

Was really delighted when the committee of Paignton asked me to judge the breed, as I’ve always admired the breed and spent many an evening at ringcraft training way back with Marc Harvey learning about the breed. It was a super entry both in terms of number (largest in the group) and quality, which meant I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and the exhibitors were friendly and supportive of the winners, it is always lovely when there is a positive feel around the ring. The two open classes were an absolute delight – was like being a kid in a sweet shop, such depth of quality not seen in many breeds today. Always interesting to look at families prevalent in your winners and I see my BOB and a number of others were sired by the same dog, Neo Dobgrace at Mattacane and my RCC dog was also the sire of many well placed dogs, including BB & BP.

SBD/B (1) 1. POPE’s Viemar Purple Reign, still a junior and has maturing to do, would prefer a little bit more bone. Correct flat skull, clean head, and well placed ears. Not very settled today so rather erratic on move. BSB. MPD (2) 1. STRACEY’s Krieger's Lasting Image, well boned and square in outline with strong sloping topline. Well defined angulation to strong well arched feet. Good length to neck, and well developed in chest for young dog. Attractive wedge head, clean lines, flat skull, eye could be shade darker. Good muscling and moved soundly with good drive. 2. DE HAAFF’s Krieger's Limelight, litter brother, well boned, but less mature and slightly longer cast. Good top line. Sufficient neck would like shade more front angulation. Good hind angulation and drives well from behind on move. Attractive head, flat skull, good length through skull & muzzle and dark eye. PD (2) 1. MEADEN’s Grafmax Golden Years, attractive in profile, correct slope of topline and standing on well boned legs to arched tight feet. Balanced marked angulation and good length to neck. Attractive head would prefer shade darker colour to eye. Flat skull and promising wedge from above, would like little more under jaw to complete wedge in profile. Moved soundly, with good drive behind, well muscled thighs. 2. GROVES, CHRISTENSEN & LAFF’s Lateagain Starstruck on the bigger side and still has maturing to do to fill out his frame. Preferred angulation of winner. Attractive head with parallel planes and flat skull, good clean muzzle and almond eye. Not quite as positive on move as winner, needs to settle into himself. JD (5) 1. MOORE’s Tuwos National Hero, this young dog caught my eye when the class started – and he certainly didn’t disappoint on closer examination. Good sized, strong round bone to tight strong feet, excellent pasterns. Well angulated front and rear and with correct arched neck to gentle sloped topline. Good forechest and rib. Very attractive clean head, good length, correct blunt wedge and flat skull. One who really powered around the ring, eating up the ground with good length to stride and plenty of propulsion from behind – serious contender for higher honours but lost out on maturity to the older dogs, certainly one to watch. 2. HICKLING & HICK’s Evalesco Ego Boost, strong boned square dog, would prefer more reach to neck to complete overall elegance. Stands on tight arched feet, good pasterns, Would like to see little more bend of stifle and still to strengthen and develop in upper thigh. Head is well balanced, good planes and clean under cheek, well set ear, lovely eye for shape and colour. Moved ok, little loose in elbow. 3. EDYVEANE & HUNT’s Virsco Vagabond PGD (3) 1. CAPELL’s Llepac Against All The Odds JW (AI) attractive in profile square outline, topline slopes correctly from withers. Good reach to neck, and well angulated. Head shows parallel planes and blunt muzzle, dark almond eye and well-set ear, and flat skull. Moved soundly but topline needs to be firmer on move. 2, GALLAGHER’s Manzart Excalibur At Izralight JW, taller dog, who I felt just needed to be a little longer in rib to give overall square outline. Good bend to stifle but would like little more layback of shoulder. Chest still to develop. Super head piece, correct wedge from top and side, sufficient stop to give correct planes, lovely almond eye of rich colour. Moved with ease in all directions. 3. WRIGHT’s Kitado Ever So Funky LD (7) 1. MASSEY & MCGEOCH’s Manzart Zebedee JW rich brown, shown in super condition to give the sheen on his coat. Excellent angulation, standing four square on tight arched feet. Presents elegant picture with sufficient neck, sloping topline. Covers the ground with ease, good length to stride and plenty of power behind. Head present as blunt wedge, though would prefer more stop. Almond eye of rich brown for a brown coated dog and well placed ear. 2. SEWARD’s Teuschons The Fierce Knight With Elleonia JW, strong built, with well rounded good bone to tight feet. Well-developed sternum and chest, correct topline, Good layback of should and sufficient bend of stifle, Clean head, good strength to muzzle and jaw to give blunt wedge. High set ears. Moved soundly – just not quite the ground cover of winner. 3. POPE’s Viemar Sunrise Special. OD (6,1) 1. Hunt & Flitcroft’s UK Ch Tuwos Mr Majestik Vonsallate, heading a stunning class, brown/rust powerfully built dog, standing four square with compact outline. Masculine wedge head of good length, with flat skull and good planes, strong clean muzzle, almond eye of good colour for brown, high set ears. Well boned legs and good muscle on thighs. Stands on tight feet. Just loved watching him on the move, easy and powerful, covering ground with plenty of reach and classic drive behind. Handler struggled to keep up with him at times. DCC & BOB. 2. Jones & Ushakova’s Ch Korifey Vanquish, slightly smaller dog but still beautifully balanced. Compact square outline with firm topline dropping from withers to tail. THOMPSON, SHAW & EVANS’ Kitado Ever So Special, a little weak in topline behind the withers. Angulation is balanced but would like to see more definition front and rear.
