Midland Chihuahua Club

Championship Show – 14th April 2024 (Show 1)

Shortly before the show, I was called upon to step in to judge Best in Show at one of the Club’s two 60th Anniversary Championship Shows which were being held on the same day at Alfreton Leisure Centre. My best wishes go to the original scheduled judge and I hope their situation is now improving.

The Club had certainly pulled out all the stops to stage what was a truly wonderful day – the two shows were designated ‘The Purple One’ and ‘The Turquoise One’ to distinguish between them and everything colour co-ordinated with no detail overlooked. Specials galore were on offer with some super prizes for the principal winners, goody bags for all exhibitors and the most amazing celebratory cake.

My BIS winner was a 2 yr old Longcoat bitch, Wilcox’s Denique Dotty For You, a smart parti-colour, so well made who moved freely and with confident carriage. Quality head with well rounded skull, clean through the cheeks, correct stop, expressive eyes and feathered ears of good size and set. I understand this girl was awarded her crowning CC today – congratulations! Reserve BIS also went to the Longcoat, this being Huntley’s Jahneemahs Eye Candy, a 22 mth old fawn dog. This boy appealed for overall type and presented a well balanced outline and was good upon closer inspection too. Most attractive head with correct skull, lovely eye and ear, well defined stop and moderately short muzzle. Another of sound construction, moving true and with attitude.

When it came to the puppies, the nod went to the Smoothcoat, Huntley’s Jahneemahs Just The Ticket. This cream bitch was very much a baby which is quite understandable at just 6 mths old but she shows great promise and made the most of herself at all times. Feminine throughout, I thought her head and expression quite adorable; well rounded skull, lean cheeks, super eye and ear and well defined stop. Stylish on the move with such good carriage. Reserve BPIS was the 9 mth old Longcoat bitch, Bielena’s Misty Meadow’s Morning Glory. I thought this pup had so much to like and she was good to go over and moved freely all through. Most attractive head with super skull, dark expressive eyes and feathered ears of correct set. Nicely balanced with correct length of neck and sickle tail set on high. She just gave a little away in topline at the last moment.

BVIS the cream Smoothcoat dog, Evans’ Ritagold Ice Warrior at Lemartiz ShCM. This 8 yr old chap was shown in super nick and gave his all to his handler. He pleased for type and presented a nicely balanced outline with neck of medium length, firm through the topline and tail set on high. Nicely proportioned head with good skull, eye and ear and nice lean cheeks. Stands so well naturally and strode out well on the go around. The longcoat dog, Sangster’s Chirolin Hugo’s The Boss at Kirlasidh, was my choice for Reserve BVIS. This 7 yr old tricolour boy appealed for type and head qualities with nicely rounded skull, defined stop and large expressive eyes. Pleasing outline with moderate length of neck, firm topline and tail set on high which was well plumed. Still showing at the end of what was a very long day.

Finally, in agreement with the Best in Show judge for Show 2, Gary Thomas, we awarded Supreme Best in Show to the Smoothcoat dog, Lyons’ Ch Bondor Given Arfa Chance for Akashic JW, Supreme Best Puppy in Show to the Longcoat bitch, Fothergill & Hunt’s Caballie Madame Barbie, and Supreme Best Veteran in Show to the Longcoat dog, Humphreys’ Ch Amarantos Tobin.
