North West Labrador Retriever Club Championship Show, 8th June 2024 - Dogs
Many thanks for the committee for inviting me to judge dogs at a new venue for the club, The Thompson House Equestrian Centre near Wigan, which appeared to have all the requirements for the exhibitors: located near to the M6, close parking, room for crates, toilets, cafe and good sized rings. Well done, committee. Thank you also to my stewards Alistair and Kerrie for their discreet and efficient assistance.
I found 1 questionable bite and happily there were no short muzzles or dogs short in leg. The Open Dog class was full of quality and I was really pleased with my final line up. Thank you to the exhibitors for bringing your dogs under me, I felt really honoured.
Special Working Dog(1)
1 Percival’s CH Wynfaul The Wizard JW Well built, compactly made black. Masculine head with a broad skull, yet a good length of muzzle & a correct stop. Kind expression & eye colour. Enough reach of neck into a well angulated front. He was deep through the chest with well sprung ribs, fairly short in back. Very well off for bone & coat. Good length of leg & moved well, he was very light on his lovely feet.
Veteran Dog (5,2a)
1 Mullett’s Shaymiloney Schinus Afinmore Substantially built 7 year old black. Kind head & a lovely eye. Good reach of neck into well laid shoulders, well ribbed back & short coupled. In good coat with a harsh feeling texture. Stood in a rather unassuming manner for his handler, but he moved out steadily, with an easy, free gait, true coming and going.
2 Markham’s Stmakajo Boba Fett 9 year old yellow, clean through neck and shoulder, well ribbed back, strong over loin. Stood on good length of leg and moved soundly holding a level topline. Carried a good short dense coat.
3 Logan’s SH CH Madgack Mulberry Minocqua
Baby Puppy Dog (3)
1 Smith’s Flyenpyg Jurgen Chopp Loved this 5 month old well balanced black, lovely steady temperament for one so young. Kind head with a sweet expression, very good reach of neck flowing into topline, good angles fore & aft, good spring to ribs (no excess weight). Carried a decent coat and moved soundly.
2 Hughes’ Meadowline Prime Suspect another 5 month old black who didn’t have the balance of 1 at this age. Sweet expression, good neck and front, carried a very good coat and moved soundly.
3 Given’s Sudeo Sandman (A.I.)
Minor Puppy Dog (8,3a)
1 Mitchell’s Darmilye Dare To Dream 8 month old clean & scopy black, very balanced outline. Kind head, lovely eye colour, very good reach of neck which flowed into a level topline & onto his tail. Good angles fore & aft. He was well ribbed back & carried no excess weight. Stood on good length of leg & moved soundly, needs to tighten in front movement. Best Puppy Dog.

3 Hughes’ Cinders Salty Sea
Open Dog (9)
A lovely class to judge with top quality dogs and while it’s probably a cliche to say it, I really could have done with more red cards.
1 Dodd’s SH CH Carriegame Moonshine Black of a lovely type with the kindest of heads. Intelligent expression in a gentle yet masculine head with the right amount of stop. Super reach of neck flowing in to a level topline. Nicely angulated front with matching rear, legs under the body. Well ribbed back/short coupled. He carried a thick, dense harsher feeling coat with a well clothed tail. Stood on well boned legs of good length with lovely feet. He presented an outline of balance & had with all the breed essentials of head/coat/tail, stood foresquare all the time & moved out with extention & drive & was very true coming & going. CC
2 Bell’s SH CH Westerulston John Very well constructed & upstanding mid-yellow, could be described as old fashioned in a complimentary way. Loved his gentle expressive head with nice planes to skull & a good length of muzzle, lovely eye shape & colour. Nice reach of neck, deep through chest with well sprung ribs, He had very good length of leg with good bone & tidy feet. Strong over loin & a good turn of stifle. In good coat & moved out steadily. A honest sort of Labrador RCC
3 Johnson’s SH CH Cremino Calabrese Very well balanced paler yellow, scopy, upstanding yet moderately built with good clean lines, lovely reach of neck flowing into level topline & had very good length of leg.
