Crufts

Breed: German Shepherd Dog

What an honour it was in 2018 to receive the invitation to judge at Crufts. Who knew that a worldwide pandemic was around the corner and life as we knew it would change for ever? I certainly never thought that I would have to wait six years to undertake this prestigious appointment.

Judging at Crufts is significantly different to judging any other RKC show. There’s a request to judge in a particular manner, to approach the appointment with a wider angled lens and to adopt techniques and tests the Best of Breed winner will face in the Group ring. What mattered most to me was that the GSD representative would showcase everything that is good and right about the breed. I feel confident that I found an exemplary role model and that she carried the burden of responsibility with ease and success. Her performance and representation were a triumph.

The entry of 153 was very much appreciated, I thank everyone who entered. There were some exceptional examples and lovely dogs to judge. I also say a massive thank you to all the handlers and owners who complied with the style and requirements of the judging technique, I appreciated your cooperation and support of the process which got all of us successfully through the day.

2 Smith Portnall Elrick Zu Sarocal ShCM Very good sable. Strong with good bone and substance. Attractive, masculine head. Dark mask, expressive and well placed ears. Good reach of neck flows into well laid shoulders and normal withers with a firm level topline. Free of exaggeration. Croup is of good length but little flat. Good turn of stifle, good hindquarters. Short, strong hocks and straight rear pasterns. Moves soundly. Good ring presence. Displayed a balanced, ground covering side gait with effective hind drive and free front reach. Also first in Good Citizen Dog. Congratulations.

3 Skinner Iolanda Luciano Over medium size. Well pigmented black & god. Good expression. Strong head. Normal withers, firm topline but nick behind withers detracts and falls away to short croup. Feet splayed and pasterns weak. Good underline. Upper arm is well angled but short. Shoulder could be better laid. Good hind angles. Short strong hocks. Moves soundly. Side gait is coordinated with good drive and restricted fore-reach.

Puppy Dog (3 0)

1 Bibby & Cox Albycox von Shotaan NAF TAF Super young puppy who was a little naughty but in a harmless way and he was enjoying is first Crufts experience. Well coated black & gold of over medium size with strong bone and substance. Appealing head with dark mask and good stop. Ears a little wide set. Expressive and self-confident. Nicely proportioned. Good reach of neck into normal withers and well placed shoulders with good return of upper arm. Very good chest development for his age. Firm topline leads into a long, well moulded croup. Very good turn of stifle. Strong broad thighs, excellent hindquarters. Straight front legs, would like to see the pasterns firm up. Needs to firm a little going away. Moves with exuberance and confidence. When settled he has good drive and very good far reaching free front reach retaining a pleasing outline at all speeds. Convinced at all phases to win the class and then to complete his day as a worthy Best Puppy. I wish him luck and success for the future.

2 Witomska Bentley Olimpus Family Fci vom Monsspeedo (Imp Pol) Over medium size black & gold long coated male of good type. Good head, should use his ears to better effect and be more expressive. Upper arm is short and steep. Shoulder a little forward placed. Would like a little more length in the loin to present better height to length proportions. Firm topline but drops away into a croup of good length but little flat. Strong broad thighs. Sound throughout in stance and movement. Steady gait with adequate drive and reach.

3 Turner Rafaye Rikkor at Tasella Close coated top size black & gold male of stretched proportions. Normal withers, long level topline. Shoulder blades should be better laid. Shallow in brisket. Short croup and untidy tail set. Strong broad thighs. Over angulated behind with long second thigh and unparallel rear pastern. Displays weakness in hindquarters moving away. Adequate drive and fore reach.

Junior Dog (2 0)

1 Witomska Bentley Olimpus Family Fci vom Monsspeedo (Imp Pol)

2 Brown Ardenburg Bix Over medium size male black gold dog of good type but not in the best of coat condition. Good proportions. Good angles fore and aft. Firm topline. Strong broad thighs. Short hocks. Straight columns. Moved soundly with good drive and reach. A little over awed today.

Yearling Dog (7 2)

1 Hughes Barwoods Iago Well put together young black & gold dog of correct size with good bone and substance. Free from exaggeration. Correct height to length proportions. Very good head and very expressive. Very good reach of neck flowing into well placed withers, clean firm topline and long, well moulded croup. Very good angles fore and aft. Good brisket. Very good underline. VG turn of stifle. Strong broad thighs. Straight columns, good pasterns fore and aft. Moved sound away and coming. Balanced, ground covering side gait with very good drive and free front reach retaining a very good outline. As he was in stance he displayed in movement, a picture of balance and very good type. Convinced at every stage of the competition. Best of luck should have a bright future.

2 Forman Reyakosa Denzo for Suzdans Over medium size sable of good type. A little light framed at this time, for me I’d prefer a little more bone and substance. Expressive and alert with good ring presence. Nice head but would like a stronger under jaw to complete the picture. Very good reach of neck. Good withers. Upper arm is well angled but short. Would like to see more development in the brisket for a yearling dog. Firm top line. Croup is long but steep. Very good hindquarters. Sound throughout and performed well with balanced side gait that was coordinated, fluent and controlled earning a well-deserved 2nd in this class.

3 Binden Jasueter Knox Appealing black & gold dog of very good type. Over medium size, medium strong. Attractive head with good dark eye and mask. Very expressive. Perhaps a little high on the foreleg for my ideal but he’s in proportion and his depth of chest and brisket development balances out the image. Very good forehand angles with well laid shoulder. Good withers, firm topline, very good turn of stifle. Strong broad thighs, a little over done in the second thigh. Boy did he give his handler a work out. The surface didn’t suit him and his exuberance was a little OTT for this particular ring and show. In glimpses there were flashes of a good side gait.

Post Graduate Dog (11 3)

1 Nicholson Chapleforge Angus with Norwulf Another winning dog who was well put together of correct size and free from exaggeration with very good proportions. Well-presented and shown in excellent condition. Attractive, strong head with good expression and well placed correct ear carriage. Excellent reach of neck flows seamlessly into well placed withers, clean firm over line and well placed croup of good length. Well angled upper arm and well laid shoulder. Very good development of brisket, good underline. Good turn of stifle, strong broad thighs. Good pasterns fore and aft. Sound throughout. Stands on straight columns and moves straight. Displays a balanced and co-ordinated ground cover gait, effective drive, good power through firm back and free front reach. Retains a very pleasing outline at all speeds. Upper arm is long but little steep. Shoulder could be a little better laid. Firm topline, well moulded croup of good length. Good brisket, well developed fore chest. Strong broad thighs but a little over done in second thigh. Front and rear pasterns should be firmer. Gave a good performance, full of energy and enthusiasm. Drives well with power and effective fore reach maintaining a good outline at all speeds.

3 King & Bragg Wolfsharn Vance Medium size sable long coat of very good proportions. Dark mask on attractive head, would like the under jaw a little stronger to give a deeper muzzle. Upper arm is long but steep. Shoulder could be better laid. Nick behind wither detracts over line. Croup short and tail set untidy. Stands with feet at five to one. Well-developed brisket. Good hindquarters. Moves acceptably away and coming. Good drive and forward reach produces a balanced, fluent side gait.

Limit Dog (10 3)

1 Hancox Wakematt’s Kato Strikingly strong, impressive male shown in tip-top condition and well presented. Strong and substantial with no sign of coarseness. Very good height to length proportions. Excellent pigmentation. Well-formed head, dark eye, alert and expressive. Very good reach of neck, high withers, straight firm back. Good strength in the wide loin. Correct angulation of upper arm and shoulder with excellent development of brisket and well-shaped underline. Excellent turn of stifle. Powerful, well-muscled broad thighs. Clean front, straight columns. South throughout. Moved with control and precision. Demonstrates a very fluent ground covering gait with powerful hind thrust excellent transmission through the back and free front reach. His performance was convincing with excellent, exuberant ring presence. Came out on top in every stage of the competition. Liked this dog a lot, a worthy winner ahead of some nice dogs. A bright future ahead. A credit to his owners. Best of luck.

2 Hill Sonarly Derrick (Mr D & Mrs S Hill) Big, strong black & pale gold male. Firm and substantial with good height to length proportions. Good head and expression. Good masculinity. Doesn’t have the pigmentation or glamour of the first dog, he has to work just that little bit harder to get your attention. But he deserves the second look as a very good dog of very good type. Strong head, good reach of neck. High withers. Straight back. Croup is long but little flat. Correct lines of support. Long upper arm and well laid shoulder. Well-developed fore chest and long brisket. Would like more definition of the underline. Powerful broad thighs. Moves soundly. Effective hind drive and free front reach create a fluid, balanced side gait retaining a firm topline and pleasing outline at all phases.

3 McGeen Wakematt Traffic Big, strong, substantial well pigmented black & gold dog with correct height to length of body. Strong, masculine head. High withers, firm backline, slight peak detracts. Good upper arm angle, would like shoulder better laid. Pasterns front and rear should be firmer, stands flat footed. Good brisket. Very good turn of stifle. A little too much in the second thigh. Moves away close. Performs with enthusiasm moving well at all speeds with a ground covering, fluent side gait.

Open Dog (13 0)

WOW! A class that was a pleasure and privilege to judge. Some really good dogs gave stiff competition. Not for me to comment about breeding because there’s more to considering a stud dog versus a show dog. But I’m going to comment anyway. For me, the first three dogs, each in their own right have lots to offer the breed and should be seriously considered by all breed enthusiasts who wish to improve and create a strong family type. Trust me, get these dogs in your pedigrees and you’ll have a strong foundation to build upon for the future.

1 Davies Ch Reno De La Petite Laeticia Absolutely demonstrates how correct size and strength can portray masculinity and presence. Strong head with good stop. Dark eyes. Well placed ears. Excellent ring presence, shown in great condition and well presented. Dry and firm with very good proportions. High wither, firm topline, strong broad loin, croup is a little flat and steep but of good length. Correct angulations of the forehand with excellent brisket and fore chest development. Harmonious underline. Clean front on straight supports. Well-muscled thighs. Short firm hocks. Consistently maintained deportment demonstrating a fluent, effortless, ground covering gait with effective drive and free front reach. Remained harmonious and convincing at every phase, calm collected and relaxed. The pleasing picture he presents in stance is replicated walking and extended gaiting. He headed up this fine collection of open dogs and was my positive choice for the CC. Super dog, a credit to his owner.

2 Lakin Ch Blerio Bezique at Mascani As with number 1, a great example of correct size, strength and substance being free from exaggeration. This dog looked immaculate on the green carpet today, a real credit to his owners and presented by his handler to perfection. Richly pigmented black & gold striking male who demands attention. The most attractive, strong, masculine head with dark mask and eye. Alert and expressive, he didn’t stop showing from start to end. Correct body length proportions. High withers, straight firm back, strong loin with very good length of a well moulded croup. Correct angulations of upper arm, shoulder could be a fraction better laid back. Powerful, broad, well-muscled thighs with excellent turn of stifle. Well-developed fore chest, long brisket, clean well defined underline. Stands on straight front columns. My only niggle, would be a more parallel rear pastern. He performed well demonstrating an easy ground-covering co-ordinated gait with strong drive and good transmission of power through a strong loin and firm back. A great length of stride he looked the part at all times and gave me just a moment or two dilemma between first and second. He so deserved something from the day and it was a pleasure to award him the RCC. Another super dog I liked very much.

3 Wakefield Wakematts Tako Impressive over medium size dog in excellent condition and well presented. Strong and substantial with high wither, straight firm back and long well angled croup. Good head. Very good fore hand angulation with balanced brisket proportions. Very good hindquarters with firm hocks and straight rear pasterns. Straight front legs and well angled pasterns. With optimum presentation he demonstrated a fluent movement with effective hind thrust and free front reach. He goes about his business in a calm and controlled manner, somewhat laid back. He retains balance and outline at all phases and deserved this high placing in this excellent class.

Good Citizen Dog Scheme Dog (9 2)

1 Smith Portnall Elrick Zu Sarocal ShCM

2 Askham & Ranshaw Sylcarrs Sabre at Reyakosa Over medium size, well boned long coated sable. Would like stronger head and underjaw. Well-proportioned in stance. Pronounced wither, firm back, short croup. Good angulation fore and aft. Balanced brisket. Good stifle. Good hindquarters. Clean front. Good front and rear pasterns. Sound throughout. Steady, balanced, coordinated side gait with good drive and adequate front reach.

3 Smeaton Lorgyle Arran Darkly pigmented rich black & gold substantial long coated male of top size. Masculine head with dark eye and mask. Normal wither, straight firm back. Croup short and steep. Pleasing outline. Good fore and very good hind angulation with good chest development and long brisket. Moving soundly coming and going he has a steady roomy gait. With a little more enthusiasm he would have been placed second.

Veteran Bitch (7 3)

1 Berntsen Fughita’s Q-Zantha Well boned over medium size black & gold long coat in very good condition. Good pigmentation. Carrying a little too much weight. Dark head. Normal wither, straight firm back. Croup is flat but of good length. Very well angulated in the hindquarters and has good front angulation. Well-developed fore chest. Good brisket. Moving soundly she has a fluent gait with good drive and adequate front reach.

2 Brown Swnynant Especially for You Medium size, medium strong very typical black & gold. Deeply bodied. Normal withers. Straight back, flat steep croup. Good angles fore and aft. The underline lacks definition. Pasterns should be firmer. Moves soundly with adequate drive and fore reach. Not in the best of coat conditions today.

3 Fowler Parkrise High Expressive, med size and strength. Good height to length proportions. Under jaw is weak. A little stuffy in neck. Normal withers, straight firm back. Well angled but short croup. Upper arm is long but steep and shoulder blades could be better angled. Good hind angulation. Short brisket. Moves soundly. Extends to a good side gait with adequate drive but the front reach could be freer and she falls on the forehand losing the overall outline

Minor Puppy Bitch (1 0)

1 Stanley Pinchmill Adira of Blanik Over medium size, young, raw, typical black and gold puppy of very good body proportions. Very nice head and expression with good ear placement. Good reach of neck flows cleanly into good withers and clean firm over line. Well laid shoulder and good return of long, well angled upper arm. Good underline. Well angled hindquarters with short hocks and parallel rear pasterns. Moves and stands soundly. Fluent, roomy gait with good drive and free front reach. Her body proportions and pleasing outline won her Best Puppy Bitch. With time related development and a little more coat she should enjoy a bright future. Well done.

Puppy Bitch (6 0)

1 Rogerson & Gourlay Hundark Havok at Siskiva Black & gold expressive medium strong, over medium size bitch of good body proportions. Good angle of the upper arm. Shoulder should be better angled. High withers, straight firm back. Good brisket. Croup is long but flat. Good hind angulation, strong broad thighs. Straight front legs, a little steep in pastern. Moves soundly coming and going. Good side gait with effective drive and adequate front reach.

2 Reid Kleehuegel Hope at Portnall Striking, well pigmented rich black & gold female of excellent type. She’s an attention grabber with her rich colouring and ring presence. Very good size and strength. Attractive head which is strong but retains femininity. Good reach of neck. Shallow chest and short brisket. High withers, firm back which displays a peak and then falls away steeply to a short croup and little untidy tail set. Moves soundly and has a good coordinated side gait and free front reach. My style of bitch in colour and size with just one issue for me, and that’s the height in the back, a massive pet hate of mine. Absolutely recognise her overall type and appeal but I couldn’t get past the high back which cost her the first place.

3 Flisek Luna Spectrinus (Imp Pol) Visually attractive, well boned and substantial sable of good type. Very nice head and expression. Would like a little more in the loin to give a more correct height to length ratio. Upper arm is long but steep. Shoulder is forward placed, this places the neck at a high angle and subsequently affects the front reach. Back is a little high. Croup is short and tail set is untidy. Good hindquarters. Sound throughout. Side gait is coordinated but not as ground covering as first and second.

Junior Bitch (8 2)

1 Moldovan Prada von Haus Corvinus Med size, well boned nicely put together black & gold female of harmonious construction. Correct body proportions. Very good top and underline. Firm back. Croup is of good length but steep. Good forehand angles, a little under developed in fore chest. Good brisket. Correct hind angulation with powerful short, strong hocks. Straight columns. Moves soundly when viewed from the front and behind. She uses everything to good affect with a controlled and polished performance demonstrated a fluent, roomy side gait with good drive and front reach. Pulled out 2nd after the individual she made it to the front of the class on performance.

2 Turner Impranah Kyogo Over medium size, striking, well pigmented black & gold long coated bitch in excellent condition. Very good type and expression. Strong head but absolutely feminine. Ears a little wide set. High withers, firm back bordering on a little high and can appear to fall away steeply if the handler isn’t mindful. Very good underline. Croup is long and well placed. Upper arm is long but could be a little better angled. The development of fore chest and brisket completely in keeping with her age. Straight legs but feet are five-to-one and it was more apparent when she was moving towards. A more collected, faster trot could have camouflaged this. Powerful, harmonious gait with optimum length of stride. Her enthusiasm to move is certainly not in question, but in this ring, on this surface it came across as too erratic and at times looked out of control. Shame, I liked her very much and she would have been the clear winner.

3 Brett Chica Guapa Big, strong. Pronounced length of body. Expressive. Steep fore hand. Normal withers, straight firm backline. Croup is short. Lacks definition of the underline. Good chest development. Long brisket. Correct going, wide coming towards. Effective roomy gait with adequate drive and normal reach.

Yearling Bitch (13 1)

1 Sohier Monksley KumiVery balanced, eye catching over medium size, dry & firm bitch in very good condition. Well put together. Harmonious proportions. Good strength without coarseness or losing femininity. Expressive, she has excellent ring presence. Demands attention, and she had mine. Good reach of neck flowing seamlessly into long withers and excellent, clean firm top line and well moulded croup. Excellent middle piece, strong loin. Chest, brisket and whole construction are exactly as you would wish to see at this age. Excellent hindquarters with broad, well-muscled thighs. Short hocks, sound, straight columns. An exceptionally correctly constructed bitch with impressive movement. Drives with purpose. The power from her strong hind quarters is effectively transmitted through that strong broad loin and correct, firm back to facilitate a free front reach creating a picture of balance and harmony with maximum length of stride. Excellent female I liked very much. If the challenge had been placed she would have been right behind the CC & RCC bitches. Lots more to come from her and should enjoy an exciting show career ahead. Well done

2 Moldovan Prada von Haus Corvinus

3 Hardy Barwoods Ivy Over medium sized, black & gold long coat, not in the best of jacket today. Stretched body proportions. Normal withers. Straight firm back, short croup. The upper arm and shoulder should each be better angled. Short brisket. Stands and moves soundly. Good hind angles. Good side gait with good hind drive but front reach should be freer.

Post Graduate Bitch (18 5)

1 McGrath Boyd Mascani Denva Well-presented and in very good condition. Over medium size, medium strong, very expressive bitch with very good body proportions. Good strength of bone. Very good height to length proportions. Very good, clean firm top line. Strong but in no way coarse or lacking femininity. Good head and expression. Upper arm could be a fraction longer. Good withers, well placed croup. Clean front lines. Good brisket and fore chest. Good hind angles with broad, strong thighs and short strong hocks. Moves soundly. Demonstrated at each phase why she should win this class with a balanced, ground covering gait that displayed powerful hind thrust and free front reach.

2 Guy Marinita Kayleigh Big, strong, substantial and very expressive. Very good proportions. Dry & firm with high withers. Good head, well set ears. Good reach of neck. Good forehand angles, well developed chest and balanced brisket. The top line is firm but not clean with a slight nick behind wither. The back peaks and falls away to a long croup. Very powerful, broad thighs. Little over done in length of the second thigh. Stands correct and moves away and coming OK. Good drive from those powerful thighs propels her effectively with a roomy gait and good front reach.

3 Benjamin Barwoods Ida Big, strong, well put together black & gold female in very good condition. Good height to length proportions. Very good fore and hind angulation. Very good chest development. Good brisket. High wither, firm straight back. Good length and angle of croup. Very good hind angulation. Moves correctly coming and going. Balanced, roomy gait with effective hind drive, firm back and free front reach.

Limit Bitch (13 3)

1 Wakefield Wakematts Hosta Here we go! Caught my eye from the instant she entered the ring. Big, strongly boned, excellent substance and beautifully presented female of excellent type in tip-top condition. Exceptionally correct body proportions of height to length. Alert and expressive. Very good head, strong but all feminine, dark eye and mask and very good ear placement and carriage. Excellent reach of neck flows without break into long withers and clean firm over line. Long well moulded croup. Excellent forehand angulation with long well angled upper arm and well laid shoulder blades. Correct maturity in construction, chest development and pronounced brisket. Well defined underline. Excellent middle piece with broad, strong loin. The initial exciting impact she made only grew, impressing at every stage of the competition. Moving soundly, she demonstrated a ground covering, balanced gait with powerful hind drive and effective transmission through the strong loin and long, correct, firm back to a free, far reaching forehand. Every small aspect from the reach of neck, soundness, clean firm top line enables the pleasing picture she creates in movement. Powerful, outreaching gait with good front reach and effective hind thrust with good transmission through the back. Very enthusiastic performance.

Open Bitch (11 2)

1 Platt Charbonnel Tanzi As with the limit female, she caught my eye from the start and from there on the bar was set and everyone else was trying to match up. Very good ring presence, the best of coat and condition and favourably presented to an accomplished level. Harmoniously and correctly constructed of correct body proportions. Striking black and gold of correct size with excellent bone and substance. Strong head, very expressive, strong under jaw and excellent depth of muzzle all in a feminine package. The line flows from the tip of her ears down an excellent reach of neck over long, high withers, straight firm top line and well angled croup of good length. Very good forehand angles. Correct development of fore chest and brisket. Excellent underline and middle piece with a broad, strong loin. Excellent hind quarters with very good turn of stifle, strong broad thighs, short strong hocks. Parallel rear pasterns. Good feet. Correct coming and going. Commendably sound. Portrays a stunning picture in stance with an excellent outline and free from exaggeration. With enthusiasm to move she gave a display of movement that was controlled, powerful and correct. Driving from powerful hindquarters with optimum transmission through the strong broad loin and correct firm back to a free and far reaching forehand. Retaining a pleasing outline at all stages of the competition. Her impressive behaviour, calm temperament, excellent coat condition, exemplary construction, size and superb presentation meant that at no point was the first place ever in danger. She was everything I was looking for and was the right choice to represent the breed in the group ring. She was a pleasure to judge and my delight to award the CC and BOB. Congratulations a credit to everyone in involved.
