Midland Counties – Newfoundland’s

Firstly, I would like to thank Midland Counties for the opportunity to judge a breed very close to my heart. As a previous exhibitor / breeder of the breed it was interesting to see the changes in the breed. As with all breeds l positive’s and negative. Always the positive first…..eye colour has improved dramatically which of course enhances expression. But close attention is needed on ‘size’ and ‘tightness’. Some things haven’t changed….fore and rear angulation still needs work. The negative, leg length especially in males is apparent and in females the ‘prettiness’ of expressions isn’t present through all exhibits. All placings were received in good spirits apart from a whisper of ‘she doesn’t like Browns’ I did smile to myself as I only show Brown Poodles! I judge as a ‘exhibit’ not a colour! You have some exceptional handlers within the breed who ‘enhance’ their exhibit and don’t detract. The use of ‘Bait’ used by those lesser experienced is fine but as a judge it is very difficult to assess a headpiece with a hand waving up and down in front of your dog’s face. I am optimistic that as a exhibitor of the breed you have read the breed standard so rather than share information you already know I will comment on my reasons of placing first over second. Finally, I would like to thank you for your entry much appreciated and enjoyed whether placed or not

Minor Puppy Dog 3/0

1/ Moir A, Newgraden to The Moon An Back. 6 month old brown. Presented in the highest order. Excellent shape in profile, very balanced throughout. Preferring the ‘bone’ and tail carriage to 2. Moved with drive holding topline. 2/ Farrar A & K, Disoranto Cool Hand Luke at Darkpeak. He scores on his ‘headpiece’. Currently narrower in forequarters. Movement once settled satisfactory in all directions. Excellent coat presentation.

Puppy Dog 1/0. 1/ Leech P & G Mileoak Hubble Bubble. Youngster of good size. Would prefer a tighter eye and ‘lip’. He scores in fore and rear angulation. Needs to strengthen in top line. When moving around the ring demonstrates excellent reach and drive. Presented in good order. Coat of good texture.BP. Junior Dog 4/1 1/ Austin W, Davistell Springsteen of Elbear. Headpiece enhanced by correct eye of correct colour, size and placement. Stood on straight parallel forequarters. Good topline. Good fore and rear angulations which showed as he moved well around the ring. For my preference needs more length of leg. 2/ McDonald J, Shadowrise Fire and Ice. Preferred the length of leg in this exhibit, but needs more rear angulationj. Attractive headpiece. Good bone throughout but narrow in front. Level topline. Good texture of coat. When moving around the ring very close in rear. Yearling Dog 3/1. 1/ Canning & Canning & Rennison G, R & M Oukaya Forever Ursa Minor (Imp Fra) 19 month Landseer. Looser lip than required. Eyes of good shape and colour. Looks nice in profile, very clean markings. Sufficient rear angulation. 2/ Hosie K & K King of Helluland Jungle Book at Shadowrise JW (Imp Svk) Short in muzzle with deep lip. Looser in eye than 1. Good bone throughout. Tail not reaching hock. Preferred rear angulation to 1. Good rib. Post Graduate Dog 6/4. 1/ RusselL K Zentaur Fizzical Damage Too short in length of back. Forequarters demonstrated an East – West placement. Sufficient width of chest. Attractive headpiece. Nice small eye of good colour. Needs more length of leg. 2/ Mcphail J , Anchorbrook Aye Aye Cap’n Much better length of leg but too long in back which adversely effects movement. Preferred tighter eye and lip of 1. Limit Dog 3/0 1/ Stanton T ,Fluffy Avalanch Charmer for Hannabarbera (Imp Rus) Well balanced throughout, compact in profile, sufficient bone throughout. Good fore and rear quarters. Nothing inactive about his appearance, possibly the happiest exhibit and ‘at one’ with his charge, masculine headpiece with a ‘correct eye. A lot too like but needs more length of leg. Presented in the highest order.

2/ Stanton J & F Dawbryn Doctor Fourtysix. Better height to 1. Width of forequarters better in 1 and preferred ‘eye’ of 1, overall nice. Open Dog 10/3 1/ Blake S, Ch Sandbears Masterpiece I’m sure that everything that could be said about this well-known and top winning exhibit has been said. So why? Going over this newfoundland typifies everything that you want to find when mirroring against the breed standard. To be very picky I’d prefer a little more length of leg. However, to win the ‘top places’ on a continuous basis a show dog needs the X Factor and he certainly has ‘it’ in spades.. His ‘work’ is to please his owner and show his socks off and he concentrates on this task from the moment he enters the ring. He is at ‘one’ with his master and the presentation is to be applauded and rewarded. Delighted to award the CC and BOB and lovely to hear of his G2. 2/ Chapman L ,Ch Nandobears You’ll Never Walk Alone (Imp Deu) Another outstanding exhibit and mirrors a lot of what I found in 1. However, 1 has better forequarters standing on totally parallel straight legs. Presentation was exemplary and handled to promote the virtues of her charge. Delighted to award RCC. Veteran Dog 2/0 1/ Dickson E & M , Zentaur Der Kapitan Wisperedomen JW ShCM Shex , 2/ Hudson & Bone H & E. Ch Newfangled Bone Idle. I have noted a even matched class but length of leg in comparison to all lower classes was certainly improved. Enjoyed watching these veterans move around the ring. Done with purpose and drive, both exhibits a credit the their owners. The Fore of 1 and tighter lip preferred to 2. Loved them both. Special Beginners Dog 2/0 1/ Russell K , Fizzical Damage 3 year old male. Good size, Particularly liked strength in top line and rear angulation. Needs more depth in ribcage. Well-presented and congratulations on placing in SBG Minor Puppy Bitch 2/0. 1/ Blake S, Sandbears Siri 7 month old female who scored in overall profile shape. Good fore and rear angulations. Showed very well for one so young. Slightly rounder in eye. 2/ McDonald S, Sandbears Dreams and Wishes A little disorganised on the move to evaluate effectively. Preferred the fore of 1 and would like to see a smaller eye. Coat beautifully presented. Puppy Bitch 3/1 1/ Popple G & Dr M Mileoak Wishing On A Star. Scored on, width of chest, good neck, excellent top line and rear angulation 2 Stanton & Latham T & S Mileoak Hocus Pocus. Smaller than 1, short in neck. Preferred the curve of skull on 1. Good lip line. Junior Bitch 3/1. 1/ Turner B, Nandobears Bisquit Rose Baranova. 16 months of good overall size. Good depth of chest, excellent bone throughout Expression enhanced by correct size, placement and colour of eye. Once owner organised she moved around the ring with drive. well. 2/ Hietschold S & K Davistell Babee Love at Chrishelkate (ai) Lighter throughout to 1 but a lot to like, attractive headpiece .Beautifully presented Yearling Bitch 2/0 1/ Coldwell G, T , E & F , Twillin Gate Villustrious among Zentaur (Imp Bel) JW. 22 month old female of good size. Excellent bone. Good fore and rear angulations. Attractive headpiece but lip looser than ideal. Vell presented, coat at a in between stage 2/ Constable S , Valhalabears Just in Time. Brown with an attractive head piece but not enough substance overall. Would prefer more length of leg, Post Graduate Bitch 1/0. 1/ Baxter & Morris S & D, Starcove Sister Act to Davistell. 2 year old of excellent size, good substance throughout. Scored in fore and rear angulation, top line dips into shoulder slightly. Liked everything about her head but lacks the feminine sweetness I’d desire. Limit Bitch 7/5 1/ Haresign R , Will of The Emperor's Could This Be Love (Imp Esp) Overall liked this female very much. Excellent fore and rear angulations, good width of chest, deep rounded rib cage. Firm topline held on the move. Feminine headpiece which would be enhanced with a tighter lip. Beautifully prepared and presented. 2/ Lloyd) WJ ,Cewrirdwr Morgana Attractive expression, preferred lip line over 1. Not the bone or substance of 1 as a overall balance. Tail not quite reaching hock. Open Bitch 6/0 The best class of the day with numerical high quality females. There was something I especially liked in all placings. A girl that I had awarded well in the past was not in the mood for showing today and it did reflect in her placing. 1/ Farrar K& J Darkpeak Starlight Express. Loved this girl. Her overall shape in profile ticks all the boxes. Super fore and rear angulations. Excellent depth of chest. The best of top lines. Attractive head but would like a little less roundness in shape. Moved around the ring with drive. Beautifully prepared with coat of excellent texture and presented well. Delighted to award her the CC which I have been advised led her to her crown. Congratulations. 1/ Bull M, Ch Sandbears What Ya Fancy at Ravenshore. This girl will not be ignored and has many of the attributes of 1. Marginally shorter in length of leg. Attractive headpiece but eye could be marginally tighter. Preferred coat texture of 1. Moved around the ring effortlessly. Prepared and presented to the highest order. Liked very much Res CC.
