Crufts

Breed: Spanish Water Dog

Judge: Richard Bott (Quensha)

I would like to thank the committee of Crufts Dog show for the invitation to judge at the world’s greatest dog show. The experience was superb with a selection of overseas dogs as well as the cream of the crop from the UK. This made for a very memorable experience indeed. Thank you to the exhibitors for giving me such a selection to judge and for the way in which they were presented in a clean and conditioned manner, on the whole.

I would also like to thank my two stewards who did a fantastic job keeping the ring running smoothly.

1ST 9147 - Sh Ch Valentisimo's Ballesteros Pd'h (Mr P D & Miss J Trebert)

Typical make and shape, whilst being masculine there was nothing overdone. Appealing head of good proportions, strong neck and a well made front assembly. Ribbed back and level in topline. Moderately angled rear and in good muscular condition. Moved out well in profile and covered the ground, a shade close going away. Coat texture correct and forming ringlets.

 2ND 9092 - Nelsonandaluza De Ubrique (Mrs Affleck-Carter)

Another who portrays a good type. Masculine head, with flat skull and moderate stop. Strong neck, well balanced angles fore and aft. Topline held throughout and he defies his 10 years on the move as he went around the ring with power, reach and drive.

3RD 9090 - Adormidera Ziggy Star Dust (Ms J C & Mr J R Abrahams)

Pleasing make and shape with a masculine head of good proportions and an appealing expression. Balanced angles fore and aft. Carrying a little too much weight today and not as firm in topline. Steady action on the move and a super temperament.

1ST 9095 - Briarlow Bin Winning via Amigorizado (Mr J & Mr A Bennett-Nulty & Giles)

Brown and white who had recently been clipped, however I could feel the coat that he had was of the correct texture and I could see plenty of curl. He presented the most balanced outline and shape in the class. His head is masculine with a flat skull good width and correct in proportions. Strong neck and well made front assembly. Body proportions are good and he is firm through the loin giving a level topline. Enough angulation to the rear. Once settled he had a brisk and powerful action on the move and was in hard condition.

2ND 9158 - Pabiagas Sergio Sinduda (Mrs J Wood)

Pleasing make and shape, would like a shade more length to leg, which will hopefully come as he finishes growing. Good head and very expressive eyes which were full of mischief. Strong neck, very good through the rib being well back and sprung. Firm in loin and level topline. Moderately bent stifles and in firm condition. Moved out well and held his outline.

3RD 9139 - Valentisimo's Rolex (Mrs J & Mr Gg Ramshaw)

White dog who was carrying a little too much weight today. Pleasing make and shape. Another who needs to finish his growing and come up on the leg a little. Well made front assembly with tight elbows and good bone. Topline level and a moderate set to the tail. Covered the ground in profile, a little close going away.

1ST 9096 - Fielamigo Dream Team via Amigorizado (Mr J & Mr A Bennett-Nulty & Giles)

White who is all male without coarseness. Masculine in head and expression with a flat skull and slight stop. Good proportions and finish to the foreface. Strong neck which fitted neatly into his shoulders. Straight front and well boned legs and neat feet. Well ribbed back, slightly longer in loin than ideal, however he maintained his topline throughout due to him being in such good muscular condition. Moderately angled rear and short from hock to heel. Coat was of super condition and faultlessly presented. Moved in a brisk manner with power.

2ND 9141 - Briarlow's Nueva Aventura (Mrs C E Ross)

Brown who again had been recently clipped but I could see his coat was of the correct texture and he had nothing to hide. His head was well proportioned with oval eyes giving an alert expression. Neat ears which were well set. Strong neck and well made front, elbows tight and a deep chest. Well ribbed back and firm through the loin. Slight slope to the tailset. Quarters were well developed and used to advantage on the move.

3RD 9105 - Prizelands in Our Dreams (F Donaldson)

Black dog who has a masculine head and expression with a good finish to the foreface. Strong neck and well angulated front, could be cleaner neck into shoulders. Well ribbed back and short in loin meaning he was a little square in outline. Held his shape in profile and covered the ground. Super hard condition. Needs to gain his confidence a little and he came out of his shell as the class progressed and he settled.

1ST 9138 - Janamorio Northern Arlo (Mr A & Mr J Preece & Cooper)

Brown and white boy who presented a typical and impressive outline. Masculine without being overdone in any department. His head is well proportioned, with a flat skull, good finish to the foreface and a big nose. Strong neck which flowed in to his well placed shoulders. Desired return of forearm and deep chested. Ribbed well back and firm in loin with the correct finish to the croup and tailset. Moderately bent stifles and super muscular condition. He is presented beautifully both in muscular development and a clean coat of the correct texture. On the move he had an accurate footfall, a brisk action and maintained his outline. Sympathetically handled to get the best out of him and the rapport between dog and hander was evident to see. In the challenge he had some hot competition and he pulled out the stops to take the RCC. Well done.

2ND 9157 - Chanderhill Eagle Eye Sinduda (Mrs J Wood)

Brown boy with a clipped coat of the correct texture. Nothing hidden away and presenting a balanced outline. Masculine in head with an expressive eye. Neat ears which were well shaped and placed. Strong neck and good front angulation. Feet could be neater and slightly down on his pasterns today. Well ribbed back and firm in topline. Balanced angles both ends. Developed muscular condition. Moved holding his outline and covering the ground in a brisk manner.

3RD 9099 - Zorrazo Kind Regards at Lendever (Mrs R Capille)

Brown and white presenting a pleasing make and shape. Good head proportions and expression. Balanced angles fore and aft and good depth to the chest. Elbows could be a little tighter both on the stack and on the move. Good spring of rib and firm in topline. Coat of correct texture.

What a super class to judge. The atmosphere was superb as the ring filled up with many top quality exhibits for me to examine. Some I have previously judged and placed well were judged on the day against the others there. Thank you for a memorable experience indeed.

1ST 9122 - Bombadee Pirelli (Mr T Kaczorek)

A stallion of a dog, full of ring presence and that extra something that makes them stand out above the rest. He is full of type and quality. Masculine without being overdone in any department. Super head and expression. So very well made throughout that his effortless and typical action on the move was a joy to watch. Presented in top condition from his muscular development to his typical coat. Constructionally he is very hard to fault in my opinion, everything flows and is where it should be. A pleasure to judge and award the Dog CC and Best of Breed.

2ND 9121 - Int Ch All About The Black Diamond of Okeanija Ew23 (Mrs Ugnė Juozelėnaitė)

Another who impressed me a great deal. Black boy who is again full of type and quality. Masculine and well proportioned head with a flat skull and good finish to foreface. Well placed ears of the correct shape and texture. Strong in neck and well placed shoulders with a good return and deep chest. Well ribbed back and firm in loin although slightly shorter than the winner. Well made quarters and good muscular development. In super hard condition and fabulous coat. He pushed hard for top honours today, I just preferred that tail set and carriage of the winner and RCC.

3RD 9117 - Lt Ch Call Me Valentino Okeanija (Mr S Jermolajevas)

Another who completed a trio of super examples of the breed here today. A brown and white boy who again is so full of quality and type. Loved his make and shape being slightly oblong in appearance. Super front assembly with desired return of forearm and deep chest. Well bodied and in firm condition. He had the most super temperament and was full of fun. Super profile action, brisk with plenty of power, just a little close behind on the go away.

1ST 9151 - Sh Ch Valentisimo's Tizi (Mr N P D, Mrs F J & Miss F Z M Walker)

I have previously judged this lady and awarded her the all important 3rd CC, it was therefore a delight to see her back some years later looking in super condition and still full of the fun and attitude she had as a youngster. She is a very good example of the breed, full of type and quality and moved as if she owned the ring. Put together very well and combining substance with femininity In super coat, it was my pleasure to award her the RCC.

2ND 9108 - Prizelands Sweet Truffle (Mr F & Mesdames C & S Donaldson & Glaysher)

Brown girl who again combined femininity with the right amount of substance. Appealing head and expression of the correct proportions. Strong neck and well laid shoulders, not the return of one and this showed in her movement as did not have the forward extension of Tizi. Well made body, deep chest, ribs well back and very firm in loin. Good quarters and her rear angulation was good.

3RD 9130 - Josalyn Palba Leonara (Mrs L Napier)

White bitch of a pleasing make and shape with a feminine head but her eye is slightly fuller than desired. Strong neck, balanced angulation both fore and aft. Not holding her topline as well as the two in front of her today. Happy disposition and moved in a steady yet accurate manner.

RES 9089 - Adormidera Princess Leia (Ms J C & Mr J R Abrahams)

1422. Spanish Water Dog - Puppy Bitch

Entries: 6 Absentees: 1

This class gave me some tough decisions. The first two really are out of the top drawer and this bodes well for the future of the breed, having quality youngsters coming through is exciting indeed.

1ST 9144 - Rommy De Ubbadat (Imp Esp) (Mrs V Searles)

Brown bitch of very good proportions, type and quality. Won her place as she is slightly more forward in her development at this stage than Ever So Special. Most appealing of heads with a delightful expression. Good through the neck and shoulder with a straight front, well boned legs and neat feet. Depth to her chest and well ribbed back to a firm and strong loin. Level topline and correct finish to the croup. Developed quarters and in hard muscular condition. Coat of good texture and well presented. Moved holding her shape in profile and driving from behind in a brisk manner. Best Puppy

2ND 9110 - Rainethyme Ever So Special (Mesdames F, C & C Donaldson, Glaysher & Palumbo)

Brown and white who also really appealed to me. Beautifully put together and presenting a typical outline. Feminine head with a mischievous expression. Strong in neck with a very good front assembly. Well ribbed back, firm loin and level topline. Desired angulation to the rear and uses herself well on the move. Just needs to tighten on the out and back which is expected at this age. One I will watch with interest.

3RD 9153 - Pabiaga Tonia (T Whitehead)

Appealing head and expression, well proportioned with a flat skull and slight stop. Balanced angles both ends, well ribbed back and still needing to firm up in topline. Moved in a brisk manner and covered the ground well. Coat of good texture however presentation could be improved.

1ST 9097 - Sierrasalvas Calabaza (Miss K Bright)

Brown of 16 months and showing all the essentials. Good make and shape with the right amount of substance throughout. Feminine head which is well proportioned, correctly shaped and set on ears and a pleasing expression. Strong neck and well placed shoulders, forechest developing and just needs to tighten in elbow as she matures. Well ribbed back and firm in loin meaning her level topline was maintained throughout. Enough rear angulation and muscular development coming along well. In profile she covered the ground well driving from the rear.

2ND 9154 - Pabiaga’s Santana (T Whitehead)

Pleasing make and shape just needs to come up a little on leg to complete the balance. Feminine head with good finish to foreface and flat skull. Strong neck and well placed shoulders, would like a little more return of forearm. Depth to her forechest, well ribbed back and a level topline. Balanced angles fore and aft. Again coat is of the right texture but would benefit from a little work.

3RD 9111 - Vinodeverano Rosa Safrano (Miss R & Mr A Freeman & Randolph)

Placed 4th in puppy and far more settled in this class as she was a little overawed to begin with. Pleasing make and shape and plenty to like about her. Needs to mature as expected for her age but has a good frame to develop into. Movement in this class was far better and I could see a brisk and typical action.

1ST 9123 - Janamorio Northern Izzy at Aguamarina (Mrs R & Mr A Kehoe)

Brown who presented a balanced picture as she entered the ring. Combining strength with femininity she is well made throughout. Appealing head which is of good proportions and with the correct eye shape and expression. Strong neck and well made front assembly, enough depth to her chest and well ribbed back. Level topline, firm loin pleasing finish to the croup. Quarters well developed with strength to second thigh. Short from hock to heel. Moved with an accurate footfall on the out and back. In profile she had carriage and covered the ground in a driving brisk manner.

2ND 9131 - Fielamigo Dream Come True (Mrs L K & Miss J Ozanne & Trebert)

White who had been recently clipped, however the correct coat texture could be felt. Liked her proportions of height to length ratio. Well proportioned head with slight stop and well placed ears. Strong neck and good front assembly with the desired depth to her chest. Firm in topline, well ribbed back and strong loin. Enough rear angulation and in hard condition. Moved out well and covered the ground in a brisk manner.

3RD 9094 - Pia del Turco Andaluz (Mrs Affleck-Carter)

Brown bitch who presents a pleasing outline. Feminine throughout with the right amount of bone and substance. Good head proportions with an appealing expression. Balanced angles both ends. Good body proportions. Coat of very good texture showing ringlets. Moved in a brisk manner but rather close behind.

RES 9091 - Cravessa's Right On The Dot by Adormidera (Ms J C & Mr J R Abrahams)

I found this class challenging and really made me think.

1ST 9135 - Josalyn Ria Nessa via Janamorio (Ms J Peart)

This girl won the class on her sound and accurate movement. She had a positive footfall and covered the ground in a brisk manner and had carriage. Head is well proportioned with a slight stop and flat skull. Strong neck and well made front assembly which harmonised with her rear angulation. Well bodied and in good condition. I would just like a little more leg length to balance the picture.

2ND 9104 - Prizelands Frosted Fancy (F Donaldson)

This bitch frustrated me as she had the best make and shape in the class but she just didn’t want to be there on the day. Good proportions throughout, correct amount of bone and substance and in hard condition. Appealing head with the correct oval shaped eye. Short strong neck and a good lay of shoulder. Well ribbed back and enough rear angulation. Even though she was obviously not happy with something, she still moved with an accurate footfall and you could see the extension in profile.

3RD 9133 - Zorrazo Xquisite Croatian Perl at Deltoroesta (Imp Hrv) (Miss R & Mr S Page & Robinson)

Presents a balanced outline with enough substance and of correct proportions. Feminine head and pleasing expression. Balanced angles both ends and good body properties. Needs to strengthen up and firm up in topline. Moved on a good side gait just a little close behind.

RES 9093 - Perrorizado Isla White (Mrs Affleck-Carter)

VHC 9152 - Espiritu Feria del Caballo (Mrs L Walker)

1426. Spanish Water Dog - Open Bitch

Entries: 11 Absentees: 0

Another fabulous open class to judge, all of those placed were out of the topdrawer and I was really splitting hairs in some decisions.

1ST 9119 - Int Ch Zorrazo All I Ever Wanted for Okeania (Mr S Jermolajevas)

Brown and white who immediately appealed as I took my first look around the ring. Super outline and balance, she stood there and had that “look at me” attitude about her. Lovely head shape, well proportioned, feminine and the right strength to the foreface. Expressive and inquisitive in expression. Short strong neck leading to a very good front assembly. Deep chested and well ribbed back. Her topline never faltered even stood in repose. Moderately angled hindquarters which were well developed with a good muscular second thigh. On the move she had an accurate footfall, driving from her well let down hocks and covered the ground in a brisk manner. She pulled out all of the stops in the challenge and it was my pleasure to award her the CC.

2ND 9132 - Valentisimo's Enigma at Fielamigo (Mrs L K & Miss J Ozanne & Trebert)

White bitch of slightly bigger frame but maintaining her femininity. Well proportioned throughout with a typical outline. Feminine head with flat skull, I just found her slightly narrow in foreface compared to one. Strong neck and well made front assembly, deep chest and well ribbed back. Topline level and firm and a good finish to the croup. Muscular quarters with well let down hocks. In profile she had carriage and covered the ground with ease.

3RD 9101 - Am Ch/am Gr Ch Lake-Breeze Sophies Choice (Mrs D & Mrs D Cocos & Molkentin)

Brown and white bitch who again appealed very much for her overall balance and proportions. Most appealing of heads with expressive eyes of the correct oval shape. Short and strong in neck which led to a very well made front assembly. Deep chested with sprung ribs which were well back. Firm in loin and level in topline. Quarters well developed and in hard muscular condition. She was presented beautifully with a typical coat texture. On the move her footfall was accurate and true, she just didn’t have the verve and enthusiasm of the first two on the day.

1ST 9116 - Sh Ch/hr Ch Zorrazo Cheek by Jowl with Chanderhill (Dr K & Mr M Hodgkinson-Rutherford & Rutherford)

Clipped brown who had the correct coat texture. Pleasing make and shape with good bone and substance throughout. Her head is well proportioned and feminine with an oval alert eye. Strong neck and well made front assembly, straight legs but a little down on front pasterns today. Well bodied, her topline never faltered. Developed quarters with muscular second thigh. She moved on an open side gait in a brisk manner.

2ND 9120 - Granvida De La Chica (R Jopson)

Black bitch which I liked the overall make and shape of as she was balanced and in proportion. Well proportioned head, strong neck and well made front assembly. Good depth to her forechest and well ribbed back. Could be firmer in topline. Developed quarters and short from hock to heel. Moved with carriage and had an accurate footfall .

 3RD 9093 - Perrorizado Isla White (Mrs Affleck-Carter)

Black and white who has good substance throughout. Feminine head and appealing expression. Short neck, balanced angles both ends and firm in topline. A little up on leg to complete the balance I was looking for. Moved well in profile and covered the ground well, just toed out a little coming towards. Her coat was well presented and of the correct texture.
