Breed: Portuguese Water Dog

Thank you to LKA for the invitation to judge, I really enjoyed my day and thank you to the exhibitors for the entry and the chance to go over your dogs.

Here are a few of my overall observations;

Heads were varied in size and shape, all had good prominent frontal bones, eyes were well set with all having wide open nostrils. Necks were all short with most being well muscled.

Coats were well kept and clean with just one knot found on the hands on.

Tails were nice with only one or two being too long but sets and carriage were generally good.

The overall structure of the dogs could have been more defined, I noticed some dogs with lack of forechest, depth of chest and spring of rib, in some this was combined with shortness in the rib and length in the loin. These structural drawbacks resulted in poor front angles directly impacting the front movement which is what would be expected with poor front assemblies. A couple of dogs were pleasing to the eye as they went away from me but I would have liked to have seen more strong rears.

Several dogs were lacking in muscle tone and level of fitness! Substance is not characterized by weight but is defined by how robust and sturdy a dog is.

PGD (1) 1 WLCKOVA Viva Merlot Tempus Ad Miraculum white curly, presenting a good shape on the stand, nice head with good ear placement, dark eyes for a white and currently in winter nose. Would like a little more muscle to cover the rib but he is still a young dog, nice length to height ratio nice angulation to the rear legs, he needs to stretch out on the move as he tends to tuck himself up underneath which does spoil the overall gait.

OD (3) 1 HOPKINS & GOTTDENKER Can Ch Ch Claircreek Pure Art (Can Imp) overall the best example of the breed on the day, he is a good medium sized dog, would like just a tad less weight but it was not excessive, his head is a picture of perfection and from his neck down and through to his tail was put together as I would expect, I would just like a little more turn of stifle to give him a little more angulation. A dog I have admired from afar. CC,BOB.

2 GRAHAM Ricci Jose Of Joseiki black and white on the smaller end of the height scale, his coat does him no favours. He is a well put together dog under all that bulk of hair and one that certainly pleased in the rib and front assembly. If he was mine, I would take his weight down but he still presented a lovely example of the breed. RCC

VD/B (2)1 SMITH Ch Ir Ch Int Ch Sh Ch Auldhelm Xquisite very feminine bitch, she has super bone throughout and a very pleasing shape on the stack, I would prefer a little less weight and a little more depth to chest but overall everything is where it should be, quite pleasing on the move. BV

2 BRADLEY Ir Sh Ch Dragonbank D'artagnan curly boy in fabulous trim, he was not happy with his handler but we got hands on and enough on the move to assess him, I liked him, he could have had more head and be a little more masculine but one who had ample chest and good ribbing. Lovely to go over him.

JB (1) 1 GRAHAM Belveduese Over The Rainbow Of Joseiki would like to see this girl again when she grows in to herself, she has a nice muzzle, her head could be broader but she is still a junior and her head has yet to shape up, she is longer cast than I would prefer but this came from the rib rather than the loin, really nicely muscled and one I’ll watch grow.

PGB (1) 1 SMITH Belleville Snooze You Lose At Submaroo ultra feminine bitch, she sadly lacked in forechest with very little depth and the front assembly was lacking in angulation, her ribs are yet to spring but they were carried well back, she may be a very late bloomer but at the moment she is very narrow all through, nice tail for set and carriage.

LB (1) 1 WHITE Oldely Garden Party a nice looking bitch on the stack, who’s head is coming, I would like more forcechest, ribs are carried well back but lack depth, she has a lovely tail for set and carriage and on the move she was pleasant to watch.

OB (4,1) Hardest class of the day with all 3 bitches being very different, however I was pleased to make up both 1st and 2nd on the day.

1PIKE & CARTER Breezelyn Top Hat N' Tails I liked this girls head, she just had that look I wanted to see, nice strong neck leading in to well laid shoulders, she did lack a little depth of chest but her ribs were well sprung and she had plenty of forechest, her rear movement is not her fortune but we can’t have it all. A nice bitch that deserved her title. CC

2 KIRK Belleville Crazy In Love Of Belezaflor JW a bitch and owner I have watched bloom over the last 18 months, she is a little longer in body than I prefer but it all comes from the rib rather than loin. She has a pretty head that is well proportioned to her overall size. Nice short strong neck leading in to well laid shoulders. Nice tail carriage rear movement was again not her fortune but she had more than enough elsewhere to win the RCC.

3 BISS Ankors Aria, a small note about this girl, she pushed the other 2 hard and she will have her day, a bitch I like, curly as well and one for the future.

GCB (1) 1 SMITH Oldeely Hope And Glory, big in head, strong neck and well covered body, however this girl was a little leggy and lacked in depth of chest, I did like her light easy trot and she did score in movement. I would have liked to see a little less length of leg to have balanced the whole picture.

SBB (2) 1 RICHINGS Barqueiro Amora another handler and dog I have watched grow over the last year, she is a smaller bitch but still in standard, nice forechest and good depth, well sprung ribs and a pretty mover, she just needs to mature on and she could contend for higher awards in the breed. BSB

2 WHITE Oldely Garden Party (repeat)
