Midland Rottweiler Club – 43rd Championship Show

Good Friday, 29th March 2024

My heartfelt thanks to the officers and committee of this club for inviting me to award my first set of CCs at a club show which to any judge should be an honour.

To the exhibitors for giving me such a fantastic entry of 106 dogs which was well above the average breed entry size, a massive thank you, the sportsmanship shown on the day to the placings and the atmosphere around the ringside with the applauds was a joy to hear from a judges perspective and I think overall gave to the atmosphere on the day, which was enjoyed by everyone in attendance.

Good ring management goes in hand with good stewards to which I had on the day, and made my judging experience a pleasing one. So many thanks to Corinna and Kaylie, much appreciated.

I was overall very pleased with my principal winners which in my opinion were as close to the breed standard that we wish to get to. Obviously in some decisions a judge needs to make compromises in certain ways, which is where we are with breeds in general at the moment.

I have some concerns about how the breed is moving forward, and losing balance with what should be 9-10 proportions, hopefully this is recognised before it’s too late. Also I need to mention light round eyes and wet/houndy heads in some of the exhibits which detracts from the overall expression. On the day temperaments were exceptional.

Baby Puppy Male (1)

What a great way to start a day’s judging and put a smile on my face with the introduction of baby puppy classes at breed shows and applauds to the club for scheduling them, though not many entries the quality was wonderful.

1st Smith – Jargerot Mr Marvellous. Approaching 5 months, very compact young male with a strong head, dark eyes, well placed medium ears and well boned. Good body length and pleasing rear angulation with first and second thigh developing nicely at this young age. Good feet and clear rich mahogany markings. On assessing movement today it was good overall and tail carried correctly. Had no hesitation to award Best Baby Puppy In Show.

Baby Puppy Female (2)

1st Parker – Hanbar Jayla. Like the male winner approaching 5 months and I believe the exhibitors first show puppy. A lovely feminine puppy with a moderate head, ears well place giving a good expression, dark eyes, good front still developing and also pleasing rear angulation. Movement was also correct and sound at this tender age, tail carriage was correct and well set.

2nd Macdonald – Jianerot Qahira. Though slightly younger than the winner, there’s still much to like about this young female. Feminine head, length of muzzle, dark eyes and well placed medium size ears, front adequate at this age, well boned on good feet. Moved okay for her age. The difference today and with these youngsters developing and growing was that she was a little bum high.

Males

Veteran (3, 1A)

Both of today’s exhibits are well deserving of their Ch title and credit to the owners for presenting in such good condition.

1st Clapp – Ch Rockstarotts Mini Clubman. 8 year old very expressive male, with a masculine head, good length of muzzle, well placed small ears, strong muscular neck. Strong front with a deep chest and width, well placed shoulders, good bone and correct feet. Solid topline, strong in body with correct length and well-muscled rear angulation. Strong and powerful movement viewed in all directions with tail carried correctly and level topline retained at all times.

2nd Brawn & Coles – Ch Javladare One Vision. 9 year old, with good size and substance, strong head with broad muzzle, dark eyes with a calming expression. good bone with excellent feet. Body not as compact as my winner but yet a strong topline and underline, well-muscled in front and rear angulation. Purposeful sound movement with good side profile.

Minor Puppy (4)

1st Ward – Hanbar Idris. 6 month and so full of promise. Developing head with sufficient width between ears that are well placed. Dark eyes and good length of muzzle and correct dentition. Strong in bone and good feet, good mouth pigment. Forequarters are well placed, good ribbing, adequate croup and rear angulation. Clear rich mahogany markings. Movement was good at this age which was fairly sound with correct tail carriage. Best Puppy Dog.

2nd Clapp – Rockstarotts Battle Born. 8 month, Good head with a pleasing expression, ears well placed and good for length of muzzle and pigmentation, dark almond shaped eyes. Pleasing neck length and well placed shoulders. Strong in body, with good topline and underlines, rich mahogany markings. Movement was sound in all directions with good tail carriage.

Good for bone and substance on good feet. Lovely body type, pleasing topline, good coat texture. Well angulated hindquarters. Movement was pleasing though a little unsettled on the go round which was a factor today when awarding Best Puppy Dog.

Junior (7, 1A)

1st Steel & Mulhall - Darkarmar Tobias. 17 month, a cracking exhibit presented in wonderful condition. A real masculine head, dark almond shaped eyes, good dark flews, length of muzzle. Strong muscular neck, good forequarters, well-muscled and good for bone with rich mahogany markings. Level topline, well for body, short loin with well-developed first and second thigh and strong hocks. Moved really well, with purpose and drive from the rear and also good tail carriage which was well set. Shortlisted for the CC today and I’m sure his time will come.

2nd Egerton & Sutcliffe - Bereyda The Real Defender. 17 month and another wonderful exhibit. A real masculine head, dark well placed eyes, good ear placement with good expression and a moderate wrinkle. Strong developed front, with good bone and correct feet with strength in pastern, strong body well ribbed and pleasing rear angulation. Movement was balanced and powerful with level topline and good tail carriage also correctly set. Slightly overmarked for me but that’s just cosmetic and does not take away from another good exhibit.

3rd Gee - Upend Ellison At Kassmax

4th Courtney Baughan - Jhava Black Magic Over Whisperdown

5th Goodban - Seittor Magic Spell With Keljaygo

Yearling (1)

1st Trevett - Vonkassel Maverick Sarkay. 22 month, with a good head type, well placed medium size ears, I would have preferred a darker eye though of a good shape. Well filled cheeks, straight front, sufficient for bone and good feet, strong body, well ribbed and level topline, strong hindquarters with correct turn of stifle and well developed thighs. Moved soundly in all directions with powerful rear movement showing plenty of drive in profile.

Strong well developed front with substance and bone. Well for body with pleasing rear angulation. 4th Jackson & Rogerson - Taneven Acreed

5th Abell - Nageem Cukier

Limit (8)

1st Clark - Dortmund Dizzy Rascal. 2 year old and my star of the day. A medium sized male but so much to like. Masculine head, dark almond shaped eyes, well placed medium size ears giving such a tranquil expression when alert. Good mouth pigment and muzzle length. Strong well developed neck, muscular front with good depth and width, sufficient bone and compact feet. Strong in body, well ribbed, good croup with well-developed first and second thigh and adequate turn of stifle. His coat texture is correct. He excels on the move which is so balanced and purposeful with a strong rear movement and good stride pattern, with correct tail carriage and topline retained at all times in moving. To finish the picture I would prefer clearer markings, though this is cosmetic and does not take away how good this male is and with this I had no hesitation to award him the DCC, which I believe later was his 3rd, Best of Breed and Best In Show. Many congratulations.

2nd Window - Hanbar Frankel. 3 year old. Another good breed example with such a masculine head with broad skull, well placed ears with correct expression and moderate wrinkle. Good fill of cheek, correct muzzle length, dark eyes, good pigmentation. Strong muscular neck, well placed shoulders, strong in bone with compact feet. Muscular front with deep forechest. Strong body and well balanced rear angulation. When he moves it is strong, with power and purpose and is very sound. He can just let himself down a little with over excitement on the move which was shown when called back for the RCC today.

Good head proportions with breadth between ears, dark eyes, ears medium in size and well placed, close to well filled cheeks. Good muzzle and sufficient pigmentation. With being balanced he’s a wonderful strong muscular front, sufficient bone and good feet with muscular rear angulation. Strong topline with a wonderful tail carriage correctly set.
