Birmingham National Dog Show 12th May 2024 – Bavarian Mountain Hounds

I would like to thank Birmingham Dog Show Society for inviting me to judge at their Gen CH Show. I would also like to thank my very efficient stewards for all their work. I enjoyed my day, and I had some quality dogs to go over. All the dogs were well turned out, and good condition. Some temperaments were lacking, and this is something that breeders need to be mindful about. Couple of incorrect top-lines. The breed should have a slight rise from withers to hindquarters and a springy gait.

Special Beginners Dog (2 entries): 1st Miss C Morrin & Miss C Barbi’s Donard Dream for Arlatdax (IKC); 8-month-old, Deer red very promising young hound of correct proportions and height. Lovely masculine head, correct eye set and colour, black mask, strong well-developed jaws. Good ear set, of correct length. Neck flowing to correctly laid shoulders. Correct topline with slight rise from withers to hindquarters. Correct length of ribbing, short strong loin. Correct hind angulation. Superb feet. Moved well for a young hound which still developing hound, did not lose his topline on the move. Will look forward to seeing him mature. BP & RBOB. 2nd Miss A Hill’s Russdales Adonis; 14–month-old stag red dog of larger size than ideal. Strong masculine head would prefer darker eye and shorter muzzle. Mask is not as well defined for coat colour as 1st. Correct lay of shoulder and topline with slight rise from withers to hindquarters. Would prefer more length in ribbing and shorter loin. Good hind angulation. Unfortunately, he did not want to co operate with the handler today. Excellent temperament

Puppy Dog (1 entry): 1st Miss C Morrin & Miss C Barbi’s Donard Dream for Arlatdax (IKC) – as Special Beginners Dog

Junior Dog (2 entries): 1st Mrs D Tucker’s Porthos Metaxa; 15-month-old promising Stag red hound. Good strong masculine head, correct eye set and colour. Black mask. Correct ear set of correct length. Correct topline with slight rise from withers to hindquarters on the move and good drive from behind. Unfortunately, he did not want to play ball today. 2nd Miss A Hill’s Russdales Adonis – as Special Beginners Dog

Open Dog (no entries)

Veteran Dog (2 entries): 1st Mrs D Tucker’s Elmstracker Glacial Force; almost 9-year-old hound. Good head, correct ear set and length, black mask. Good length of neck and front angulation. Good length of ribbing, short strong loin. Good hind angulation. Level topline both stacked and on the move. Wont the class on movement and particularly good handling. BV

2nd Miss H Clymer’s Cornishtor Woody; 8-year-old stag red hound. Would prefer a stronger head, muzzle slightly snipy. Correct eye set and colour. Black mask. Well-muscled body, with good length of ribbing and short loin, correct top line slight rise from withers to hindquarters. On profile, loses underline. Moved with drive. Very well handled and lovely temperament

Special Beginners Bitch (2 entries 1 absent): Mrs J Paul’s Miss Lulu Mildred; 2-year-old Deer red hound of smaller statue. Good head and correct eye set. Correct ear set and length. Neck flowing to well placed shoulders. Good length of ribbing but I would prefer shorter loin. Well-muscled back and correct topline with slight rise from withers to hindquarters. The movement on this girl is to die for and handled with such skill. BSBB.

Limit Bitch (2 entries, 1 absent) – Mrs J Paul’s Miss Lulu Mildred – as Special Beginners Bitch

Open Bitch (2 entries, 1 absent); Mrs D Seago’s Conwydogs Purple into Amlida; 2-year-old Deer red hound of excellent proportions. What is not to like on this bitch, everything is there. Feminine head, correct eye set and colour, correct black mask for the colour. Strong jaws. Correct ear set and length. Neck flowing to correctly placed shoulders. Excellent fore chest. Correct topline with slight rise from withers to hindquarters. Body proportions spot on, slightly longer than tall. Correct length of ribbing and short strong loin. Correct hind angulation. Very excitable today but once settled on the move she moved parallel, with springy gait, driving from behind covering the ground with ease. Expertly handled showing her virtues to the best. BOB
