South of England Irish Setter Club Championship Show 30th May 2024
Thank you to the Officers and Committee for giving me the opportunity to judge their championship show held in conjunction with the Southern Counties championship show. Thank you also to my steward for the day, Jacquie Rorke. A big thank you must go to those who entered under me allowing me to judge again those whom I may have judged before as youngsters and those whom I may have previously only seen from ringside. I’m not sure what happened to the weather but, although chilly, the rain mostly held off allowing full use of the good size ring. As the show was held as a partnership show to Southern Counties the host show judging had to take priority resulting in inevitable delays to some of the classes which was unfortunate but unavoidable so thank you all for your patience and apologies to those who could not stay for their respective challenges.
Overall presentation was excellent, however I did find some level bites which does go against the breed standard of requiring a scissor bite. Necks in the main were strong and muscular with good reach. Tail carriage on the whole was good but some tails presented with a curl when on the move, something which detracts from the clean flowing movement with the tail straight off the back and flagging side to side. Perhaps the wind got up tails but it meant some exhibits I initially thought highly of, lost out to perhaps a lower class placing. That said, I was delighted with my final line ups and top awards
Minor Puppy Bitch (3,1)
1st Sturrock Forfarian Fancy Me
What a tinker but what a cracker. A little erratic on the move at first, giving her handler a hard time but she settled and showed her true balanced movement. She has substance with good shoulder placement down to pronounced forechest. She is well ribbed for her age with correct depth of chest. With a long lean, not thin, neck, her topline slopes gently through to correct tailset and she has a beautiful overall shape maintained on the move with good front and rear angulation, is short hock to heel and she possesses a super head with raised brow, long low set ears, I loved her dark almond shaped eyes with a certain mischievous twinkle. BPIS
2nd Danks-Kemish Alolfrana Electra
A pretty lass of good shape stacked and on the move with good bone, a long neck and well ribbed back with good depth to her chest and good straight front. Her tailset is good and she used it showing happy free flowing movement made possible by her correct front and rear angulations. I just preferred the head of 1.

At 14 months she is just right for her age. She stands over the ground on strong bone with neat feet, has good head construction with low earset, raised brow and correct eye. Her well muscled and arched neck flows down through her withers in to a gently sloping topline finishing over correct croup and tailset. She has well sprung ribs and is strong over the loin. Shown in a rich chestnut coat her fore and aft angulations ensured balanced and steady movement using her tail to advantage assuring her of this 1st place.
2nd Robinson Cherrorvale Dream Come True
Super shape, well bodied she is feminine with good head structure and dark pretty eye. Correct shoulder placement and well off for forechest and spring of rib, she is strong over loin and hindquarters. She was a little unsettled at first but moved out well when settled driving from super angulations and short hock to heel. Only just pipped to the post for 1st place.

Another that was unsettled at first but redeemed herself on the move. She is balanced with sound musculature construction and has a nice shape when stacked properly. She has a nice head and dark eye with pleasing expression and low earset but I felt her ears could do with a bit more trimming to add a bit more elegance. Her neck is muscled and strong and leads down through a gently sloping topline. She has good spring of rib and is well ribbed back and strong over loin and moved freely using her tail well.

2nd Prangle Clonageera It’s a New Dawn At Heathclare JW
Loved her outline stacked, she stands on neat feet and is well off for bone. She has good head planes with well defined occiput, raised brows over dark eye with soft, slightly quizzical, expression and ears low. She possesses good shoulder placement, a super forechest and straight front, a gently sloping topline through to good width of hindquarters. Her ribs are well sprung with deep chest. She is well coated in good condition. Tail is well set on but just lost out to 1st as it was tiny bit high on the move, perhaps a result of the windy conditions.

Super outline stacked and on the move. She has a long lean head, her skull accentuated by her long low ears set close to her head. Her eyes dark with almond shape and soft feminine expression, her neck muscled and arched set down into correct shoulder placement, firm over topline and croup, good spring of rib and depth of chest, good width to second thigh with well bent stifle and short hocks allowing drive and reach on the move with correct tail carriage. Full of quality in rich dark well conditioned coat, lovely.

Racy with elegance and substance and an overall lovely outline from all angles. She has a pretty head with dark eye with softest of expressions. Her ears are set low and her neck is muscled and arched. Her front assembly is correct, she has a pronounced sternum, is well off for rib and depth of chest, strong over hindquarters with good bend of stifle and short hock to heel however she seemed slightly unsettled on the move.

Did this girl well as a puppy and she retains the qualities that I liked in her then. Lovely head construction, raised brow and still has that certain glint in her dark almond eye, low set ears and clean neck into gently sloping topline to level tailset. She has substance whilst maintaining femininity, her front and rear angulations are spot on allowing sound effortless movement.

Her moderately arched neck is set into correct shoulder placement, her front and rear compartments are correctly angulated and her topline slopes gently head to tail, she is strong over loin and croup with tail correctly set and used to advantage on the move holding her topline and driving from strong short hocks.
2nd Bayne Corranroo Rainbow Shimmer
One I have judged before and thought highly of. Possesses a super outline and, as previously, presented in full gleaming coat and condition. Her long lean head has a well defined stop and occiput, ears set on low and close to head, soft dark expressive eye, good reach of neck into correct front assembly, well off for forechest her body is balanced throughout with strong loin leading down into correctly angled stifle, short hock to heel her movement is true and stylish with reach and drive maintaining her topline with her tail level at one with her handler, she was unlucky to meet the winner.

Lovely outline stacked and moving, her fore and aft angulations are absolutely spot on. She has good bone, excellent forechest, depth of chest and spring of ribs and firm over her gently sloping topline which flows with no interruptions through to correct set on of tail which wagged nonstop. She owns a beautiful head with deep muzzle, expressive eyes and ears set low that accentuate her defined skull shape. Presented in full coat her movement was effortless and sound with reach and drive off of short strong hocks. I considered her for top honours.

This was a close decision between one and two. A bitch with substance all through and a super smooth flowing outline, pretty and feminine, her head is long and lean with a soft expression and good reach of neck. She stands on neat feet, has good depth of chest and well sprung ribs, ribbed well back she is strong over loin and has ample fore and aft angulations with good width to second thigh. A pleasing head with softest of expressions, good reach of muscled neck into clean shoulder placement, is deep chested with ribs sprung well back and with front and rear assembly spot on with good width of hindquarters and of second thigh. In hard condition and in super coat condition she moved with balance and drive with her tail set straight off her back. A worthy Champion, pleased to award her BCC and RBIS.

At 10 years old she is super in outline standing, feminine in head with the softest of expressions from her dark unshelled almond eye, she has raised brows, long low set ears, good length of neck, muscled not coarse, into clean layback of shoulder and return of upper arm. Upstanding boy, super head planes, raised brow, dark eyes of correct shape with an inquisitive look to them, strong neck into correct should lay through gently sloping topline finishing with a good croup and correct tailset. I’m sure he has a bright future ahead of him.

Rangier than one and still a bit raw at 13 months so has a lot of maturing to do. Presented with dark coat of good condition, has a pleasing outline, his head a little heavier than I prefer and still needs to break but he should grow into that as he matures and fills his frame. He is well off for bone, stands straight in front and has adequate angulations, not quite the balanced steady movement of 1st.

His strong arched neck sets nicely into well laid back shoulders and his topline slopes gently through good width of hindquarters, he has good length of hip to hock and short hock to heel. His sound balanced movement driving round the ring with tail held straight won him this class. 2nd Rutherford-Judge & Prangle Clonageera Touch Of Gold
Judged this boy as a youngster and he has matured well. Presented in excellent hard condition with sound bone and construction throughout. He has a handsome head with correct eye shape and colour, ears are low set, his neck muscled and sits cleanly into good should placement. He is well off for forechest, is straight in foreleg and has nice neat feet. He has good depth of chest with well sprung ribs, strong through loin and hindquarters, good length hip to hock and strong hock to heel, spot on angulations front and rear. He moved purposefully with drive but was a tiny bit proud of his tail which I forgave as he has previously held it level on the move. I see he is the sire of my junior bitch winner and my novice dog winner and they obviously have inherited similar qualities.

After going over those initially present in this class I thought I had my top honours in the bag until the late arrival entered the ring and he immediately filled by eye. He stood with quality dogs but a decision had to be made and I couldn’t deny him 1st place and top honours.

Stacked he excels in outline that flowed, each part set nicely into the next from shoulder through topline to croup to tailset and oozed quality. This boy was so unlucky to meet the winner. Having judged him previously and awarded him the RCC I was sure he was my winner when he appeared in front of me again. All the attributes I admired about him then still apply, indeed today he seemed in finer form. Presented in excellent coat he is such a pleasure to go over, smooth lines with every part setting into the next with no unsightly transitions and a lovely clean outline when viewed from any angle. He owns a handsome head, long and lean, ears set on low, raised brow and dark eyes with such a gentle but quizzical expression. He has good bone, a pronounced forechest and stands on straight forelegs and neat feet. His muscular arched neck blends into nice front angulation, he is deep chested, ribs well sprung and ribbed back giving plenty of heart and lung room.
