Boston & District Canine Society

Breed: Irish Setter

Many thanks to the committee of Boston for the kind invitation to judge Irish Setters for the first time at this level. Although I grew up in a famous gundog kennel comprising of spaniels, I spent many hours travelling about with my parents and being in the presence of many great Irish Setters and their breeders and I fell in love with the breed. Although having only had one (and making him a Sh Ch), I retain a great interest in the breed & was very pleased with the quality of the entry today.

Puppy Dog

Entries: 4 Absentees: 0

1st) Loganrish Tiger Warrior (Miss Holehan), almost a year old and an instant eyecatcher as he is very striking when standing. Excellent head and eye, good forehand, super topline and neat underline. Very sound on the move for one so young and shows a lot of promise. Shown in excellent coat and condition.

2nd) Forfarian Fancy Footwork (Mr G & Miss K Jacobs & Bernard), another lovely puppy, very good in head and eye, super expression and balance to skull. Not quite the front of the winner and this showed on the move, but he does have a good depth to his chest, well ribbed and firm in topline; very smart on the move in profile.

3RD 3797 - Bardonhill Return to Sender (Mrs M Bott)

Junior Dog

1st) Alolfrana All I Ask of Eveanabec JW (Mrs R D Danks-Kemish), 16 months old and a super dog standing. Loved his head and eye, he excels here. Good lay of shoulder but could do with a mite more upperarm, excellent body but as his front construction would suggest, he could do with a little more reach. Excellent presentation and handling.

2nd) Tiroen Touch of Magic by Settesoli (Imp Kcj) (Mrs J P Russell), very typical dog although he is rather slight all through at the present time. Good head and eye, but it can come on as yet. Good to go over and generally all of a piece and he is very sound on the move. Maturity should sit well with him.

3rd) Danwish Troubadour (Miss T Gardner)

Yearling Dog

Entries: 1 Absentees: 0

1st) Ferasheen Hot Proper Tea JW (Mrs K & Miss G Sloane), lots to like about this dog for his static balance. Such an expressive head and eye, fairly well made in front, good forehand and chest, excellent bone throughout and he stands on good legs and feet. Well bodied for his age and coming together nicely. Sound and free on the move, just a mite restricted in front action and could be a little neater there.

Novice Dog

1ST 3838 - Tiroen Touch of Magic by Settesoli (Imp Kcj) (Mrs J P Russell), 10 months and so a real baby, he is very typical of the breed in all respects but he does need time to come together on the move and gain confidence. Shows a lot of promise and I liked him in every respect, he should finish up very well. Sympathetically handled.

2nd) Bardonhill Return to Sender (Mrs M Bott), 3rd in Puppy Dog and another very nice prospect. Good head and eye, well constructed in front, firm topline and neat underline for age. Thought he could settle a touch on the move on the day, but certainly one with a future. Presented in first class order.

Graduate Dog

Entries: 4 Absentees: 1

1st) Riverbrue Ophelia Bobby (Mrs S Cole), I loved the shape of this dog when I first cast eyes on him, super head and a truly wonderful expression, balanced angulation front and rear, so well bodied and in the most superb nick, a free and easy mover and a most exciting prospect.

2nd) Quensha Thinking Out Loud at Bransett JW (Mrs D & Miss J Parsons), another lovely dog, though he is stronger in head than the winner which cost him here. Good shoulders, enough return of upperarm and good depth of chest. Firm topline and neat underline, and used himself well on the move.

3rd) Loganrish Out On The Town JW (Mr R Green)

Post Graduate Dog

Entries: 3 Absentees: 0

1st) Bardonhill A Million Ways to Delsanto (Mrs C A Sheldon), very striking 2.5 year old male, balanced head properties and he is very expressive. Good shoulders, enough depth of chest but could have a mite more to firm him up at elbow, and this showed on the move. A very stylish dog in all respects & in smashing bloom and super muscle tone.

2nd) Brinara Country Boy (Mrs B, Mrs L & Mrs L Berry, Morris & Fitzmaurice), 4 years old and a good type, although not the expression of the winner I thought. He is perhaps a little better in chest, and very well made throughout. Goes with a good, free and easy stride.

3rd) Lynwood Merry May King with Shushana (Mr & Mrs H A M Cohen)

Limit Dog

Entries: 4 Absentees: 0

1ST 3808 - Riverbrue Cast No Shadow On Haverley (Miss A Dufrat), not the biggest limit class but full of quality. The winner really caught my eye for his outline. Loved his head of the correct proportions with good eye, could just do with a touch more fill. Excellent forehand, good layback of shoulder and return of upperarm, and an excellent depth to his chest. Firm topline, and neat underline. Stands on good legs and feet, and well boned throughout. So much to admire & on the move he comes to life, very free and easy. Excellent presentation. A lovely chap.

2nd) Swiftlark Spellbinder (Mrs S S Corless), another super chap, excellent type; very expressive and good balance to his skull, very masculine but not coarse. Very well made in front, super body & in excellent, hard condition. Not quite the outline of the winner of the day, but so little to dislike and put down in first class order. Very well handled.

3rd) Gwendariff Tullys Red Arrows (Ms R Richardson)

Open Dog

Entries: 4 Absentees: 1

1st) Sh Ch Riverbrue Morning Glory (Mr B A & Miss C Crocker & Lewis), 3 super dogs, the winner absolutely super for the breed, a very charismatic dog & bursting with quality. Glorious head and eye, so very expressive and typical. To go over, he is so well knit, super forehand, good depth to chest, firm topline, well ribbed back and very neat in underline. On the move he comes to life & uses himself very well and is virtually foot perfect. In smashing coat and condition, so little to dislike about him & on this performance, how could I do anything but award him the DCC & BOB, and pleased to see he caught the eye of Jane Eyeington in the Group. An object lesson in presentation & so well handled.

2nd) Sh Ch Riverbrue Wonderwall at Hernwood (Mr B A & Miss C Crocker & Lewis), another quality dog with so much to commend him and indeed, I would have been happy to sign a CC for him too; as point for point there is very little to dislike about him. Super head and eye, in great body and in first rate condition. Morning Glory’s backend is better & this is where Wonderwall paid the price.

3rd) Sh Ch Thendara Big Love JW (Mrs D & Mr J Milligan-Bott & Bott), completed a trio of lovely dogs & I would have been happy to sign a CC for any of the three of them.

Veteran Dog

Entries: 2 Absentees: 1

1st) Thendara The Watchmaker VW (Mrs S Pym), as often happens with this breed, they are slow to mature and sometimes at their best as veterans. Here is a living example of that; 9 years old and now reaching the zenith of maturity. A real class act with so much going for him, glorious head and eye, super forehand, excellent topline, super tail for both set and carriage. Moves like a dog half his age & his footfall and accuracy belies his years. I strongly considered him for the CC and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if, on this form, he adds a few CCs to his name over the coming months. A super setter. BVIB, VG1.

Special Beginners Dog

Entries: 2 Absentees: 0

1st) Swiftlark Spellbinder (Mrs S S Corless), see 2nd Limit.

2nd) Loganrish Out On The Town JW (Mr R Green), close up to the winner & could change places on another day as he too is very admirable. Similar in head to the winner and could do with a little more work there I thought; but he is well made in body & fairly sound and free on the move.

Minor Puppy Bitch

Entries: 3 Absentees: 2

1st) Gwendariff Skys The Limit (Miss S Roffey), the sky is indeed the limit as she has it all ahead of her. 7 months old and I do think she knows just how beautiful she is. At this age, she has no coat of glamour to hide a thing; she is raw, bare and everything is there for all to see. Her head and eye are near perfect, super front construction; excellent chest even for this tender age, firm topline and neat underline. Stands on the most beautiful legs and feet; to go over she is so delightful & I thought she was exceptional from the get go. Such a sound, free and easy mover with a front that is the exception rather than the rule. She strode back into the bitch challenge with her head up and a free, easy and purposeful stride and I was quite taken with her, out of the corner of my eye, against some of her older competitors. The more I asked of her in the bitch challenge, the more she gave and conscious as I was of awarding a 7 month old Irish Setter puppy a ResCC, I considered her to be worthy of the title of Sh Ch & hence, RCC and BPIB. She has got it all ahead of her.

Puppy Bitch

1ST 3796 - Bardonhill Marie's The Name (Mrs M Bott) most appealing puppy with a shapely outline when stacked. Everything is just right for her age. She has a melting expression with those dark eyes and pigmentation, well proportioned head and desired chiselling. Long lean neck flows well into the gently sloping topline. Liked her bone, having strength but still racy. Enough depth for her age, good width of thigh. Showing good reach and drive and sound on the move.

2ND 3815 - Loganrish Tiger Lilly Pearl (Miss Holehan) another lovely puppy with a lovely outline when stood, very shapely and elegant just a bit bigger all through than 1. Head is showing good proportions and a gentle expression. She has a lovely length of neck, well held topline, nicely boned limbs, well angulated stifles. Happy & outgoing on the move and very sound.

1ST 3807 - Quensha Beautiful Stranger of Gracewood (Ms A & Ms S Douthwaite & Wharfe) Thought this bitch to be of a lovely size and shape when stood. She has femininity and the racy appearance yet is nicely boned with substance. Most feminine of heads, good length of neck, which flowed into her firmly held slightly sloping topline and well set on tail. Liked her hindquarters, showing good width with length and a good bend of stifle. Correct amount of width and depth to the body, and nice spring to the ribs. Shown in a rich chestnut coat and presented beautifully. On the move she is ultra sound fore & aft and was a delight to watch in profile. I had no hesitation to award her BCC, her 1st. Hopefully the other 2 won’t be too far behind.

2ND 3814 - Harreds Lillie (Mr P J Hall) bitch with elegance and style. Liked her very much. She has a lovely flow about her, beautiful lines and balance. Lovely feminine head, lean long neck, firm topline stood and on the move, well set on tail, well angulated hindquarter. Moving out well just not as positively as 1 today.
