Judging critique - Manchu Shih Tzu Society Open Show 21st April 2024

I was absolutely delighted to be invited to judge the Manchu Shih Tzu Society’s Open Show and even more thrilled with the fabulous entry. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and commend the exhibitors on how they created a lovely, supportive atmosphere around the ring. Thanks must also go to my very efficient stewards who enabled the smooth running if the show.

I was so happy to judge the club’s first set of Baby Puppy classes. All were of sound temperament and obviously enjoying their time in the ring.

Baby Puppy D 3,1

1 Silsbury’s J’Adoremu Red Thundering Heart. Nice outline & very well-schooled for age. Lovely head, shoulders & width of chest. Good topline and bone. Dark eyes positioned far apart. Square muzzle & good coat texture. Moved well.

2 Hiscock’s Shidizzle Murray’s Mint. Only four months old. Good coat. Dark round eyes. Lovely shoulder placement and return of & upperarm. Nice short loin; good tail set. Moved well.

Baby Puppy B 4

1 Willett’s Juhua’s Heavenly Scent To Debeaux NAF TAF. Best in outline. Nice head & tail carriage. Good eye shape and colour, open nose and square muzzle. Nicely rounded skull. Excellent bone & width of chest for age. Good topline & tailset. Pleasing coat thickness and texture. Moved well fore & aft.

2 Willett’s Juhua’s Kissing You At Debeaux NAF TAF. Similar, just a little longer in body than 1. Nice head. Round skull. Open nose. Lovely dark eyes set far apart. Good level topline. Nice angulation fore & aft. Moved very well.

3 Steel’s Juhua’s I’m Not The Only One.

1 Longstaff’s Shihmali Wild At Heart. BPIS. Best in outline. Lovely & well made throughout. Dark, large eyes set far apart. Open nose; square, short muzzle; head broad with rounded skull; high set ears. Excellent lay of shoulder and return of upper arm. Straight front legs. Good depth and width of chest. Level topline & nice tailset. Nice coat for age. Should have a promising future.

2 Bown’s Matsonic Midnight Storm Over Bishbow. Not quite as mature as 1. but has plenty of time. Nice typical outline. Good round, dark eye & pleasing expression. Open nose & well-developed, square muzzle. Excellent neck, lay shoulder & return of upperarm. Good topline & tail set. Moved soundly fore & aft. Pleasing coat thickness.

2 Ayers & Ackers’s Honeyshuchun Soldier Boy At Bornred. Well grown for age. A little longer than 1. Lovely masculine head. Nice eye & expression; open nose. Good length and strength of neck. Excellent bone & good length of ribcage. Good tail set. Lovely rear angulation. Moved well, showing rear pads. Good coat.

1 Spooner’s Ethelsmead Bak To The Future Of Chanikos. Lovely, typical outline. Pleasing head and skull shape, round, dark eye & arrogant expression. Open nose, nice earset & shoulder placement. Displaying strength throughout. Correct level topline. Well angulated fore & aft. Moved well. Coat of excellent texture & volume.

1 Steven’s Peekin Reggie Rebel-Tu. Lovely in outline & shown in excellent coat & muscular condition. Smaller than 2 but everything in proportion. Lovely eye & expression. Nice width of head with good furnishings. Open nose, nicely arched neck. Good angulation fore & aft. Well-rounded ribcage going well back. Correct level topline & high tail set. Moved well, covering the ground well with strong rear action.

2 Yorke & Keree-Bartolo’s Middletune Blazzin Saddles JW. So masculine throughout with abundant coat. Masculine head of sufficient width, large round eye & pleasing expression. Nicely rounded skull. Good neck & well-laid shoulders. Chest well developed. Good ribs going back to short loin. Nice tail set. Moved well fore & aft.

1 Sullivan & Diffey’s Marhilway Driving Edge At Jacquinta JW. Best mover in this class. Nicely balanced, typical outline . Masculine head with good eye shape and eyes set well apart; open nose. Good length of neck & well-laid shoulders. Level topline of sufficient length. Excellent tail set. Nice width of upper & lower thigh. Coat of good thickness.

2 Salt’s Keola Driving Force. Another very nice dog shown in excellent coat & condition. Lovely temperament. Correct dark, round eye & open nose. Good length & shape of muzzle. Nice neck & shoulders. Strong, level topline. Good angulation fore & aft. Moved smoothly, striding out infront.

Lovely width of head; dark, round eye & open nose. Rounded skull; long high set ears. Good angulation infront and behind with nice width of upper and lower thigh. Level, strong topline, kept well on the move. Excellent coat in texture & abundance.

1 Bradshaw & Symonds’s Ch Cremefern Trigger A Storm At Symaraju JW. Best Dog and Reserve Best in Show. Lovely type with super temperament. Shown in excellent coat & muscular condition. Nice width of head, correct dark, rounded eyes set well apart. Nice length of square muzzle; good furnishings on head. Open nose. Well-shaped skull & ears of good length set on high. Well-made throughout. Complementary head & tail carriage on the move; really strode out infront complemented by strong rear movement. Quality coat of sufficient length and density.

2 Salt’s Keola Cruz Control JW. Another lovely example of the breed, of similar type to 1. Shown in excellent coat & muscular condition. Lovely dark, round eyes & pleasing expression. Nice open nose. Excellent width and shape of skull, well-placed ears of good length and good length & strength of neck. Correct level topline & high tail carriage. Moved well but just not quite as well as 1.

1 Sullivan’s Jacquinta Lets Go Andy JW. Lovely outline with excellent front & rear angulation. Lovely dark, round eyes. Good width of head with nicely rounded skull; level lips. Good length and strength of arched neck.; nice lay of shoulder and return of upper arm. Ribcage of good length leading to short loin. Pleasing length and texture of coat. Moved soundly.

2 Yorke’s Middletune Wildest Charmer. Another nice example of the breed; just preferred the head of 1. Good muzzle & skull shape. Well angulated throughout. Nice topline. Coat of good length and texture.

1 Gordon’s Mapimakastar Honey Edee Mio At Cavateena. Best Puppy In Show. Lovely outline with nice head & tail carriage. Feminine head, eye & expression. Good open nose & short, square muzzle. Well-rounded skull; high earset. Good length of neck; nice forechest. Good angulation fore & aft. Level topline & high tail set. Shown in condition. Moved soundly both coming and going.

2 Vose’s Shihzarbruno Cookie. Another nice type. Good overall shape. Lovely width of head, dark, round eye & desired arrogant expression. Good with of head with rounded skull. Ears of good length, set on high. Nice, level topline. Moved well.

2 Sullivan’s Santosha Black Charm At Jacquinta. Lovely outline. Feminine head with nice eye and expression. Good furnishings for age. Excellent length and strength of neck, well-placed shoulder & good return of upper arm. Pleasing strength in body for age. Nice topline & tail set. Coat of good texture. Moved well both coming and going. Just preferred overall head & tail carriage of 1.

1 Gordon’s Mapimakastar Goldie Jol Jas At Cavateena. Caught my eye on the first run around the ring. Shown in excellent coat & muscular condition. Lovely width of head, nice round, dark eye with eyes set well apart. Open nose & sufficiently rounded skull. Good furnishings on head. Well-made & strong throughout. Good depth of chest and straight front legs. Lovely complementary head carriage & tail set. Moved soundly, really striding out.

2 Shulver’s Crimsonleash Ruby Star. Another lovely type, just not quite the substance of 1 at the moment but has time. Very pretty head with excellent eye shape & colour. Nicely rounded skull. Good level topline & high tail set. Coat of good condition. Moved well both coming and going.

3 Macdonald’s Hin Chen’s Jewel in the Crown At Centastage (IMP NOR).

2 Monument’s My Golden Yasmin. Another nice type, just preferred the head & expression of 1. Well-made throughout. Good bone; excellent width & depth of chest. High tail set. Coat of good texture and length. Moved well.

1 Yorke & Keree-Bartolo’s Middletune Modesty Blaise JW. Best Bitch & Best in Show. Caught my eye on the first run around the ring & did not disappoint on closer examination. Very typical in outline and presented in excellent coat and muscular condition. Lovely well-balanced head with all the desired breed attributes including the desired ‘chrysanthemum-like” effect with good furnishings. Excellent construction and angulation throughout with excellent lay of shoulder, return of upperarm and good width of upper and lower thigh. Lovely head carriage with complementary tail carriage both standing and on the move. Moved well, striding out infront with strong rear movement, showing rear pads on the move and displaying the typical arrogant carriage.

2 Shaw’s Shorestar Mystical Pixie. Not quite the maturity of 1 but has all the essentials. Lovely eye shape & expression. Strong throughout. Good width and depth of chest & well-developed ribcage of good length. Level topline & high tail set. Moved well both coming and going.

3 Willett’s Keola Absolutely Flawless At Debeaux.

1 Howard’s Tameron Mis I Want Choo. Res Best Bitch. Excellent, feminine outline. Well balanced in head with lovely eye shape & colour. Good pigmentation. Open nose & square muzzle of sufficient length. Nice furnishing on head. Rounded skull, high set ears of good length. Nice length of well-arched neck which she carried well. Excellent lay of shoulder, return of upper arm & width of chest. Strong and long ribcage leading to short, strong loin. Nicely angulated hindquarters with good width of upper and lower thigh. High tail set. Excellent abundant coat of good texture. Moved well both coming and going in harmony with her handler. I’m sure she will have a good future and she pushed hard for Best Bitch but just preferred overall strength in outline of my winner.

Desired high tail set. Moved well both coming and going.

2 Skawska’s Amore Mio Santinel Reheto At Mapimakastar (IMP POL). Slightly different in type to my winner. Nice eye, good width of head. Well set-on of long ear. Excellent lay of shoulder, return of upper arm & width of chest. Well-developed rib cage. Nicely angulated hindquarters with good width of upper and lower thigh. Tail set on well but lacking a little in plumage on tail today. Moved OK.
