I would like to thank the West of England Ladies’ Kennel Society for their kind invitation to judge today, an appointment that was scheduled to take place at the beginning of the Covid 19 pandemic. My two stewards were both very friendly and helpful keeping the ring flowing throughout.

Many of the males proved too enthusiastic for their handlers tending to tow them around the ring which affected their toplines and the dogs pulled rather than drove from behind, thus making their movement very hard to assess. More ringcraft would benefit or a change of handler for the move, which is something I have sadly had to accede to in recent years, but it is so special to see dogs moving correctly. There were many exhibits moving close behind and although increasing speed will lead to centre tracking, the hocks should still be parallel. Unfortunately, there were too many incorrect bites today something which I feel breeders need to watch closely.

I felt that overall there was more quality in the bitch entry but was pleased to see some really good male heads with soft expressions that I feel has been lacking.

1ST 161 - Benbuie Thornbird of Finnsfolk (Miss J R Ellington)

7 years old, Well shaped head with dark eye and he still retains excellent colour. Lovely low set ears and a true Gordon head, strong neck into well laid shoulders, balanced angulation fore and aft, nice depth to brisket. Correct topline and well set on tail with good carriage. Nice width to thigh and short strong hocks which were used well to drive around the ring.

2ND 180 - Hernwood Boston High Flyer (Ms K Mccarthy)

Again 7 years old, he presented a correct balanced outline. Correct head proportions and gentle dark eye, clean in the neck. A little wide in shoulders. Another with good colour but unfortunately inbetween coats at present. Plenty of bone with well shaped and padded tight feet, moving a little close behind. I felt he could have been moved at more speed to show his drive.

44. Gordon Setter - Minor Puppy Dog

1ST 203 - Roydack Black Knight at Tymora (Mrs H J & Miss S J Tye)

This young lad has hopefully completed his growing and can now concentrate on filling his frame. Plenty of depth and showing plenty of forechest. Although raw at the moment his movement was free flowing with drive and he was very well schooled. I look forward to watching him as he matures.

46. Gordon Setter - Junior Dog

1ST 197 - Glenmaurangi Apollo at Glenkinchie (Mrs C L Smith)

Another well grown young male, I have watched him progress for the last few months and he is beginning to fill his frame and come together well. A strong boy and although his movement was steady, he was well ahead of his handler and needs to settle more. Well laid shoulders, short coupled, just tending to fall away over the croup giving a lower tailset. In the next class he was more co-ordinated and showed well.

 47. Gordon Setter - Yearling Dog

1ST 197 - Glenmaurangi Apollo at Glenkinchie (Mrs C L Smith)

 Repeat of Junior

2ND 150 - Forester's Northern Hunter of Darkmoor with Gadieburn (Imp Deu) JW (Mrs E Ashton)

This young man was not in the mood to co-operate with this handler today throwing himself about on the move and paid the price. A good headpiece with well defined stop, chestnut tan on muzzle and clean neck. Short strong back with the best topline in the class. Plenty of bone and substance and well-shaped feet.

3RD 160 - Beechlake The Storyteller of Finnsfolk (Miss J R Ellington)

RES 208 - Pipruda Jubilarian (Mrs B & Mr K Wood)

48. Gordon Setter - Post Graduate Dog

1ST 156 - Amscot Air Apparent (Mrs J & Mrs L Collins-Pitman & Cox)

A very balanced young dog, who presented a very stylish outline. His head showed good parallel lines with nice chiselling, correct depth to his muzzle, long low set ears. Nice length of neck into well laid shoulders leading to a strong level topline with correct tail run off. Whilst he has heavy pencilling on his feet his overall tan markings were well defined and clear. Angulation was balanced and allowed him to move out with drive. This boy was well handled and seriously considered in the challenge.

 2ND 159 - Burroughtof Loch Leven at Glenarden (Mrs E M Ede)

Another nice young dog, who exhibited a good profile when stacked. A soft expression and dark eyes. Slightly shorter in neck than one, but had well laid shoulders. Good forechest and depth to the brisket. Great bone and substance and super feet. Shorter coupled than one. Lovely width to his thigh, and good turn of stifle. Would prefer a slightly shorter hock. One who would benefit from being moved a little faster on a longer stride.

3RD 194 - Hernwood Cooper King (Mr L E, Mr N & Mrs E Poynter)

RES 181 - Hernwood Wizard of Oz JW (Ms K Mccarthy)

49. Gordon Setter - Limit Dog

1ST 154 - Red Admiral by Rubymoon JW (Mr K D & Mrs C E Butler)

This boy headed a quality class of Gordon males. I have watched him mature, and he just gets better and better. Masculine head with nice depth of muzzle, deep lustrous tan. Good length of neck into lovely shoulders allowing a strong topline. Correct gentle sloping croup to a nice tailset. He was extremely well muscled, and his stifles were well turned but not over angulated. His short straight hocks allowed him to move with drive around the ring. In the Challenge I was pleased to award him the RCC.

2ND 202 - Caradilis Sky Rocket JW (Ms M Morgan)

A very happy stylish young dog, shown at top speed. I did ask the handler to slow down to enable me to assess his footfall which was correct. Just my style of Gordon. He was shown in great condition with good muscle tone. His tan was rich and clear , he has a beautiful expression, not quite the masculinity in head of one. Low set ears. His coat texture and grooming was excellent.

3RD 157 - Colquhally Major Tom (Mrs M W Danks)

RES 151 - Palangor Moonlight Echo at Pangarak (Mrs L Bain)

VHC 174 - Ludstar Maccabee at Glenquin (Imp Ita) (Mr P & Mrs L & Miss N & Mrs F Johnston & Johnston & Johnston & Boxall)

50. Gordon Setter - Open Dog

1ST 207 - Locksheath Black Ice (Mr K & Mr J Whiting & Cops)

This boy shouted Gordon Setter; his profile enabled me to assess his confirmation easily. Superb head, with well defined stop, chiselling under the eyes. Wonderful nose showing his open nostrils. His ears set low and level with his eyes, clean throat and strong neck leading into well laid back shoulders, correct length to upper arm giving balance to his forehand angulation. His topline was strong and level and he carried his tail well level with this back. Lovely forechest and depth to brisket, well sprung ribs and strong loin, well muscled hindquarters and short straight hocks. On the move he drove around the ring appearing to float showing both strength and power. Very happy to award him the DCC.

2ND 184 - Sh Ch Cafotaliena Thief of Hearts by Brobruick JW (Mr C & Mrs S A Mitchell)

This boy has the most beautiful head and expression but not quite the masculinity of my winner. He has dark eyes and chiselling giving great shape to his foreface. His skull was also correct being broad between the ears rather than behind which many exhibits seemed to have. His fitness was obvious, and he covered the ground effortlessly for his handler. Great bone and substance and excellent tan. Tight neat well padded feet.

3RD 177 - Sh Ch Bryerdale Quantas (ai) (Mrs P J Baines)

RES 193 - Sh Ch Glenmaurangi Storm Trooper JW (Mrs A, Ms T & Mr N Phillips, Watkins & Sykes)

51. Gordon Setter - Veteran Bitch

Entries: 4 Absentees: 0

This class was headed by two beautiful bitches of breed type.

1ST 155 - Ch/int/ger Vdh Ch Amscot Love Is in The Air JW Ww 18/21 (Mrs J Collins-Pitman)

A very well-known bitch who comes into her own on the move, powerfully covering the ground and she looks a picture, She has a good head and expression and strong neck into well laid shoulders and level topline. Nice forechest, and depth to brisket, balanced angulation in fore and hind assembly. In the challenge, I preferred the overall outline and type of my limit winner. BVB & BVIB

2ND 196 - Sh Ch Cairacailie Night of Love with Ordett JW (Mrs Y Slaughter)

Not a large bitch, she has great definition in her skull and pleasing expression.I preferred the colour on this girl to my winner. Strong neck into well laid shoulders, and level topline. Plenty of forechest and depth to the brisket, her ribs reach well back and are well sprung. I would like a little more length of loin. Well muscled. Shown in excellent coat and condition. Just not quite the rear drive and ground covering movement of one.

3RD 206 - Locksheath True Baloo (Mr K Whiting)

RES 182 - Lachmhor Sincerely Yours at Barrabrae (Imp Hrv) (Mr D H Mcneil)

52. Gordon Setter - Minor Puppy Bitch

Entries: 3 Absentees: 0

If I had bred the first two Minor Puppies I would be so proud as their breeder should be, I would have happily taken either home with me. My third place was giving a lot away in age but shows a lot of promise.

1ST 191 - Flaxheath Cover Girl (Mrs A & Ms T Phillips & Watkins)

This young lady has that look of being here before, she was shown in gleaming coat and she already has great muscletone. She went on to win BP and later Puppy Group 1 – congratulations! Extremely well schooled but it was nice to see the hint of puppy attitude to challenge her handler. She already has good furnishing but it is easy to see her excellent structure at a glance. Ultra feminine head with lowset ears. Lovely bone and substance throughout, nice forechest and good length to her rib cage. Super topline which she held on the move and that tail just did not stop!!

 2ND 176 - Flaxheath Centrefold (Ms V L Lines)

Another beautiful bitch., shorter coupled than my winner. A very feminine well shaped head and dark expressive eyes. Correct angulation front and rear. Plentiful coat coming in, which like her sister is silky and coal black contrasting the deep chestnut tan. Not quite the confidence of her sister but when settled she moved steadily and true and she has plenty of time on her side.

3RD 168 - Cafotaliena All Eyes On Me (Miss N C & Miss C Hardy)

53. Gordon Setter - Puppy Bitch

1ST 165 - Balnakeil Creag Rainich (Mr A M & Mrs S Green)

This young lady has really matured well since I first saw her some 5 or so months ago. At almost a year of age she is a very balanced girl, nice bone and colour, good angulation and plenty of depth. She has a very attractive head with dark eyes with a hint of mischief! Moved out well for her runner although her exuberance gave him a workout.

54. Gordon Setter - Junior Bitch

Entries: 2 Absentees: 0

1ST 189 - Glenmaurangi Aurora (Mrs A & Mrs H & Ms T Phillips & Bishop & Watkins)

A mature girl, with plenty of substance. Most beautiful head and dark eye, showing lovely femininity Very mature in body with good bone and excellent colour. She was a little tense when stacked which affected her topline. .

2ND 198 - Ronaldsbill Magic Stars (Mrs J A & Mr N Speed)

Overall a nice young bitch just not the maturity or substance of one Long neck into well laid shoulders giving a strong level topline. I would like a little more turn of stifle and strength in the hocks

55. Gordon Setter - Yearling Bitch

Entries: 3 Absentees: 2

1ST 195 - Eusanit Marcella (Mr P & Mrs C A & Miss D Sandiford & Sandiford & Mazzeo)

A very well schooled young lady. Her coat gleamed and was in great condition. Tight well padded feet. Balanced angulation front and rear, lovely short tail set on well and which didn’t stop wagging.

56. Gordon Setter - Post Graduate Bitch

Entries: 5 Absentees: 1

1ST 187 - Lignum Oro JW (Mr G I & Mrs A J Palliser)

I judged this young lady as a puppy and awarded her well. She has continued to fulfil her early promise which is lovely to see.

A balanced outline in profile, feminine head with correct proportions, she still retains the mischievous expression she had as a puppy, strong neck leading into well laid shoulders, short strong topline, plenty of forechest and depth to brisket. Great width to her thighs, good turn of stifle and short strong hocks. She moved enthusiastically around the ring but I was able to see her driving movement, and good reach.

2ND 185 - Amscot Air of Success (Miss J Osborn)

Another stylish bitch, slightly longer cast than my winner and she did not move with such drive. Very feminine with beautiful expression, in fit and hard condition with excellent muscletone. Correct angulation in fore and hind assemblies. Well padded feet of good shape. Lovely short tail which she used enthusiastically on the move.

3RD 169 - Cafotaliena Hello My Love (Miss N C & Miss C Hardy)

RES 152 - Cottonstones River Sprite (Mrs C F Brandon-Lodge)

57. Gordon Setter - Limit Bitch

1ST 175 - Painted Lady at Tregarrick (Ms S Leonard)

I have admired this young bitch from the ringside and it was a pleasure to go over her. For me she shouted Gordon Setter, not overdone in any department and totally filled my eye. Her head was exactly what I was looking for, correctly made with parallel lines and a good stop, prettiest expression. Whilst not the coat of some, her outline was balanced with complementing fore and hind angulation, her topline was strong and level both in the stack and on the move and her tail ran cleanly from her back slashing happily. I was delighted to award her the BCC and then BOB. I felt she did the breed justice in the Group later in the day.

 2ND 172 - Ordett Love Me Do at Keaswood JW (Mr K & Mrs S L Horn)

I was splitting hairs between these two girls. Just preferred the head shape and expression of my winner. This bitch was beautifully presented in a full gleaming coat, she has a strong neck into very well laid shoulders, a level topline and nice tail carriage. Excellent muscletone. Very happy on the move but not quite the positive drive of my winner. A worthy winner of the RCC.

3RD 200 - Waseley Springtyme (Mrs K G Sweryda)

RES 204 - Roydack Portrait of A Lady (Mrs S & Miss H Upton-Lovett & Upton)

VHC 201 - Glynderys Moonstone (Dr M Thomas)

The class was headed by two very worthy show champions.

1ST 192 - Sh Ch Flaxheath Top Model at Glenmaurangi (Mrs A & Ms T Phillips & Watkins)

This girl as always was shown in fabulous condition, she has achieved so much and has raised the profile of the breed. So feminine, strong neck and correct angulation front and rear, shoulders a touch wide and she did lose her topline on the move. Since her last litter her body has matured and she shows super depth and great spring to her ribs with a strong loin. Beautifully muscled.

2ND 173 - Sh Ch Glenquin Phoenix (Mr P, Mrs L & Miss N Johnston)

A strong contender in this class, slightly shorter cast than my winner which I preferred, she has a beautiful profile and is mature in body and coat. Very feminine in head. Clean neck, I would like a little more forechest. Good length to her body and well turned stifles, a shade long in hocks.

3RD 178 - Bryerdale Qookaburra (ai) (Ms A Mappin)

RES 164 - Balnakeil Creag Na Caillich (Mr A M & Mrs S Green)
