Windsor Dog Show Society

Breed: Finnish Lapphund

Thank you to Windsor for my third invitation to judge which finally happened after COVID. It was certainly worth the wait. I had some quality dogs to judge and some very exciting youngsters for the future. Temperaments were excellent throughout. There seems to have been improvement in front construction, since I last judged the breed, particularly in shoulder and upper arm length. On the flip side, rear angulation should be moderate but there were quite a few dogs with over angulated stifles which in turn makes the rear movement somewhat untidy. Something to watch. Coats were mixed today especially in the girls who were in changes of coats due to weather/hormones, however there was enough to inspect and coats at the end of the day grow back (hopefully).

Veteran D/B 4,0abs

1st Cooper & Coopers’ Ch Pavoskas Aly Arttu JW ShCM ShCEx VW. First dog of the day was this lovely 9 year old wolf sable male. Presented in excellent condition and coat and making a great first impression when viewed from all angles. Enough strength to head with a kind brown eye and super expression. Good breath to skull with well-set ear which was well covered. Balanced throughout with correct angulation, tail set on high and carried well over the back. Good muscling to rear and low strong hock. Excellent bone throughout. Won the class on his movement which was clean in all directions with enough pace and reach without being overexaggerated.

2nd Samuels’ Oberitz Upponalle. Another lovely male. 8 year old brown wolf sable. Close up to first. Excellent condition throughout with strong bone. Beautiful head of good proportions. Broad skull. Muzzle in balance with skull and well padded. Good underjaw. Brown eye harmonizing with coat. Excellent pigmentation throughout. Small ear of good shape and well furnished. Strong medium neck. Excellent front construction. Slight lay back of shoulder, ample upper arm. Legs parallel when viewed from the front. Enough length of back. Rear was well muscled. Enough turn to stifle and stood on strong, low hock. Coat of correct coarseness to top coat. Dense, soft undercoat throughout. On the move he looked lovely in side profile, but slightly untidy at the rear on the up and down. On the final run round, pipped by my winner who was more forward going on the move.

3rd Aristides-Pickard’s Sambreeze Tiianmaria

PD 2,0abs

1st Allison’s Lahetyaby Joulukoriste by Oberitz. 8 month B/T. Lovely boy who appealed for type and shape. Head coming on nicely, of correct proportions for this stage. Dark oval eye finishing off that soft appealing expression. Balanced in muzzle and skull with enough stop, Just needs to mature on and fill out. Small well-furnished ears set correctly on head. Ample reach of neck onto slight layback of shoulder. He has enough upper arm. Parallel leg. A touch narrow at this stage as he still needs to drop and widen in chest but going in the right direction. Enough length of back. Rear assembly is balanced with moderate angulation to stifle. Short hock. Just needs to strengthen up. Typical puppy coat but had some coarseness with enough undercoat. He is very precise on the move with enough reach at front with follow through of rear. Clean in all directions. Held plenty of undercoat with the correct texture of top coat. Promising youngster.

2nd Whyman & Muray’s Lappviken Keltainen of Manu. 9 month B/T. Larger set dog than my winner. Presented in good coat of nice texture. Head is strong for age but still needs to develop in width to muzzle. Enough stop. Brown eye of correct shape. Lovely neat ear of good shape and covering. Good pigment throughout. Enough reach of neck. Neat front construction although a touch steep in shoulder which should come right as he grows on. Chest has developed well but just needs to broaden out to give more width in front. Firm body with good rib. A touch long in loin. Well-muscled in rear. Over angulated in stifle which does affect his movement and paces as rear legs come too far forward of front legs at times.

1st Meikle & Henderson’s Elbereth Etiainen at Lintukoto. 13 month B/Tr. What an exciting youngster this boy is. If only I had more green cards. Beautiful head, which oozes expression and says come snuggle me. Masculine yet so gentle in appearance. Broad skull in balance with muzzle which has plenty of padding. Dark, oval eye giving him the loveliest expression. Enough length of neck. Front construction is excellent for one so young. Plenty of upper arm, slight lay back of shoulder. Body of correct length. Rear complemented with enough angulation. Standing on short strong hock. Good bone throughout and presented with an excellent coat with the required coarseness to top coat, profuse around the shoulder area. Very clean mover in every direction, particularly pleasing in side profile with a precise footfall. The way he’s maturing I have no doubt that he will get his title in the future.

2nd Brache’s Elbereth Oreokeksi at Lappiness. 13 month B/Tri. Litter brother to my winner. Another promising youngster presented in good coat and well boned throughout. Head of nice proportions for age. Dark eye and lovely expression. Good padding to muzzle and enough stop. Just needs to finish off broadening across skull, which I’m sure he will, as he matures. Ears well furnished, set a touch close. Enough length of neck. He has a strong front with good angulation and enough upper arm. Pastern slightly sloping. Well covered feet. Firm body. Just would like more length in back as does look a touch square. Rear well-muscled, with good angulation. On the move he was particularly nice in side profile with a neat footfall. Ok coming towards me but just a little untidy and close at times going away.

3rd Whyman & Murray’s Lappviken Keltainen of Manu.

PGD 7,1abs

1st Meikle & Henderson’s Elbereth Etiainen at Lintukoto.

2nd Moores’ Morval Soturi (ai). 3 year old B/W. Smaller size to my winner but within standard. On first impression, this boy presents such a striking outline. Everything in proportion and excellent front and rear angulation. Head has lots to like. Dark eye and appealing expression. Muzzle well padded, would prefer a shade shorter to balance with skull. Correctly set, well covered ears of desired shape. Good breadth of skull. I would just prefer a stronger more upright stop. Body was perfectly put together. Chest down to just above elbow. Slight lay back of shoulder, enough upper arm. Front legs parallel when viewed from front. Plenty of chest space and down to just above elbow. Good length of back. Rear again, complemented with just the right amount of turn of stifle. Short, strong hock. Tail set high and carried over back at all times. Good bone throughout. Coat was on the change, but enough dense undercoat to sit under top coat which had the desired texture. Another who is so clean on the move and effortless. Nice to see air between the legs on the up and down and excellent strides when viewed from the side.

3rd Small & Thompson’s Ansalfrose Weikko JW.

LD 5,0abs

1st Lee’s Kaijartuu Ihmissusi JW. 5 year W/S who I judged as a youngster and he still appeals now. Although he is on the larger side and slightly up on leg. He is beautifully balanced throughout. He has a lovely expression and dark oval eye, just would prefer more width to muzzle and head. Enough reach of neck. Clean angulation front and aft with nothing lacking or exaggerated standing naturally four square every time. Ample chest and good width throughout. Excellent bone and tone. Clean topline with high set tail carried over back and well furnished. Tight oval feet with good furnishing. Presented in a clean coat of coarse texture with enough undercoat. On the move his paces are precise in every direction and gives a super outline in side profile.

2nd Allison’s Oberitz Kaamoksen Ruhtinas JW. 3 year old B/T Lacking his coat today but did not spoil his overall outline. His head is nicely balanced, with enough width to muzzle and broadness of skull. Dark oval eye with strong pigment. Enough stop. Ears well covered and set wide apart. Strong, medium neck on super lay of shoulder. Plenty of upper arm, parallel leg and well covered oval feet. Solid body with moderate rib. High set tail of good length. Rear assembly well-muscled to thigh with moderate angulation. Strong hock. Coat had some coarseness to it with new undercoat growing through. Moved well in all directions. Straight coming and going and clean even paces when viewed from side.

3rd Brache’s Elbereth Oreokeksi at Lappiness.

OD 6,1abs/1w/d

A lovely class of quality males. Decisions on placings were literally splitting hairs.

1st Samuels’ Oberitz Buoremus. 4 year old B/T. Lovely male of appealing type. Presented in good coat. Top coat had the required coarseness. Enough undercoat of dense fit. Balanced head, with enough padding to muzzle. Strong, broad skull with clean lines and ample stop. Small ears set wide apart and well covered. Clean front assembly with correct open angulation. Strong, straight leg, with sloping pastern. Tidy, well covered feet. Good length of back with clean topline. Enough spring to rib and short loin. Strong rear with enough angulation to thigh. Well muscled. Strong hock. Excellent bone throughout. On the move, he has a nice brisk pace and neat footfall without any exaggeration. Balanced in all directions. Pleasing to watch in side profile. DCC

2nd Forseys’ Ch Arianrhod Black Sun Aeon at Muzoku. 4 year old B/T. Beautiful boy. Presented in excellent condition. He is lovely to go over. Good bone and well toned and muscled throughout. Head is as strong as I would like but of good proportions and gives a pleasing expression. Dark oval eye, good pigment. Strong front with enough width and drop to just above elbow. Rib, slightly rounded. Would like being picky a touch more length to back. Rear of strong construction, moderate angulation down to strong short hock. Tail set on high, well furnished. Presented in full coat, plenty of undercoat, strong top coat with desired coarseness. Once settled his paces were clean and straight. Splitting hairs on the final run round and he didn’t settle as well as winner and threw his front out so had to settle for the RCC today.

3rd Woollard’s Ch Infindigo Lintu Miika.

SBD/B 2,0abs

1st Rudd’s Infindigo Lintu Henkka (Mr M Rudd) 6 year old. W/S. Strong male of good shape and size. Went better in this class. All male with a lovely head which isn’t overdone. Balanced with correct length muzzle with enough padding and required taper. Clean stop. Brown, oval eye. Medium ear of good shape and spacing. Has a lovely expression. Clean neck. Nice front. Would like a little more upper arm, but strong leg and plenty of breathing space in chest. Strong body with moderate spring of rib. Clean rear with enough angulation onto low hock. Excellent bone throughout. Coat had some coarseness around neck but slightly soft over body due to coat change. Clean paces, has a tendency at times to move close behind.

2nd Ellis & Crosby’s Tabanyaruu Borealis Bliz. 23 months B/Tri female. Head of nice shape. Eyes a touch light and round which spoils her overall expression. Muzzle with enough padding and in balance with skull. Ears set wide and of good shape. Ok for neck. She is a touch steep in shoulder and would like more upper arm to give her the full extension at the front. Nice body length with good spring of rib. Clean rear assembly on strong hock. In good coat but found top coat was too soft at the moment. Ok on the up and down. When viewed from side, front slightly restricted in extension due to above comments.

PB 3,1 w/d

1st Fedeli’s Aegirsson Unicorn’s Vibe. B/T. 6 months on the day. On first view she has very nice shape and outline to her. Very pretty pup. Head developing well and where it should be at this age. Dark brown oval eye with good pigment. Ears set correctly, small and well covered. Nice reach of neck. Front developing well. Plenty of upper arm. Slightly narrow at this point and chest still needs to drop further and fill out as she grows on. Again, where I would expect at this age. She has a tidy topline with a moderate spring of rib. Tail set on high and well covered. In typical puppy coat with enough texture and undercoat. Very well schooled for one so young. Clean paces on the up and down. Particularly nice in side profile. Clean, brisk trot. Very attentive to her gentle handler. Pleased to give her the class and BPIB

2nd Lock’s Muzoku Black Opium. 8 month B/T. Another nice youngster. Pretty girl with a sweet expression. Head coming on. At the moment a touch long in muzzle and needs to fill out which I’m sure it will as she grows on. Lovely dark eye of nice shape. Enough neck. Front construction is where I would expect for age. Chest is dropping well but still needs to fill out and widen. A shade upright on shoulder but enough upper arm. Nice body length and good rear construction with enough turn of strife. Good bone throughout. In good coat with excellent harshness particularly around shoulder. Ample soft undercoat. On the move, she was slightly distracted by the adjacent ring, but once focused she had nice paces. Just needs to tighten up all round which I’m sure she will as she matures.

JB 3,0abs

1st Greenland’s Skimarque Luminen Metsa from Rajarani. 15 month B/T. Pretty dark female maturing nicely. She has a nice shape on first impression when viewed from all sides and in good coat. Appealing head and has such a lovely expression. Just needs to broaden out in skull and strengthen in stop. Dark oval eye with good pigmentation. Strong neck onto nice lay of shoulder. Front assembly with nice open angle onto sloping pastern and well covered arched feet. Brisket in correct position just about elbow. Just needs to fill out and broaden slightly. Good length of back with desired rounding to rib. Balanced in rear with enough angulation and strong hock. Enough bone throughout. Once settled she moved well in all directions. Very clean coming towards and away and pleasing in side movement.

2nd Critchlows’ Pavoskas Iloilme. 13 month W/S. This sweet girl had come in her bikini today but there was nothing to hide looking at her. Head is coming on nicely. Still needs to develop in width in muzzle and skull but good stop. Slightly larger ear but of good shape, set and covering. Plenty of neck. Front construction is good with moderate lay of shoulder and plenty of upper arm. She still needs to drop into chest and broaden out which will come in time. A shade long in body and needs to broaden out in rib. Rear construction with enough angulation to stifle, slighter longer hock. OK for bone. Another nice mover in all directions with precise footing. Very attentive to her handler.

3rd Critchlow & Cooper’s Pavoskas Ilomieli.

PGB 7,1abs

1st Allison’s Oberitz Tumma Ruhtinatar 3 year old B/T. Attractive girl with the loveliest of expressions. Another growing a new coat and furnishings in. Promising head of good shape and proportions with enough stop. Just needs to continue broadening out in skull and muzzle. Ears well covered and of nice shape and size. Set correctly. She has a lovely balanced shape about her with enough angulation to front and aft. Still needs to broaden out a touch in chest but in correct position above elbow. Nice length of back with moderate rib. Carries enough bone throughout and well-toned. On the move, she is so clean and pleasing to watch. Enough reach to the front and perfect rear foot fall. Parallel from all directions. She was one of the best movers on the day. I couldn’t deny her the RBCC and would imagine once back in full coat she will be one to watch.

2nd Critchlow & Rudd’s Pavoskas Hiili Helmi. 21 months. B/T. Smaller size of the scale but everything in proportion and well put together. She has a lovely outline to her on first view. Presented in clean coat, with enough coarseness and a thick dense undercoat. Nice head proportions with balance in muzzle to Skull. Enough stop. Dark brown oval eye. Good pigmentation throughout. A sweet yet cheeky expression (that lappy grin). Good breadth to front with chest in correct place and clean open angles. Strong body with clean topline. Enough spring to rib. Excellent muscle tone, particularly in rear thigh. She is very positive on the move with clean brisk paces in all directions.

3rd Stanleys’ Ansalfrose Wivi JW.

LB 6,2abs

1st Allison & Bright’s Oberitz Beaivvas 5 Year B/T. Lovey build and type. Due to her rather long coat she is one you really have to get your hands onto, to appreciate her qualities. Sweet head with enough broadness to muzzle and skull. Neat well covered ears. Dark brown eye of correct shape. She has a lovely expression. Her front assembly is correct with enough angulation throughout. Again, her coat makes her seem short on leg, which on inspection is not the case. Good length of back with a nice rounding to rib. Tail set high. Enough rear angulation and super strong hock. Excellent bone throughout. Coat has a good harshness especially around the neck. Enough soft undercoat. Excellent furnishings to legs and feet. On the move she is very clean. She does have a tendency to lower her head, sometimes a little too far, which hinders her front extension but overall clean paces.

2nd Woollards’ Infindigo Onnekas Kielo. 4 year old DM. Pretty girl with lovely expression. Would like a little more width to muzzle and skull. Good eye colour and shape. Slightly larger ear but of good shape and covering. Set a shade close. Ample neck onto clean shoulder and plenty of upper arm. Tight oval feet. A little long in body but this didn’t affect her overall balance. Enough spring to rib. Rear with just enough angulation to stifle. Clean oval, arched feet. Coat had enough dense undercoat but slightly soft topcoat due to coat change. Clean mover in all directions. Just a touch narrow at rear when moving away.

3rd Critchlow’s Pavoskas Fuchsia.

Last class of the day and I wasn’t disappointed. A quality class of females.

1st Moores’ Ch Morval Salainen Haave JW. 7 year W/S. Finally had the pleasure of going over this lovely lady and she didn’t disappoint. She’s everything I like in a Lapphund. Substance but still that femininity. Beautiful head of excellent proportions. Good width to muzzle with enough padding and enough underjaw. Perfect balance to muzzle and skull. Medium ear well covered, of nice shape and placing. Overall a super if not slightly mischievous expression. Excellent front angles on strong leg. Well covered oval feet. Firm body with excellent spring of rib. Strong rear assembly with enough turn of stifle onto low strong hock. Plenty of bone and well-conditioned throughout. Coat was on the change and not back to full bloom but enough there of correct substance and coarseness. Her movement was brisk and clean in all directions, particularly impressive in side gait. Pleased to award her the CC and out moved the male in the Challenge to win BOB.

2nd Critchlows’ Ch Pavoskas Disco JW ShCEx OSW. 6 year w/s. A lovely lady of similar type to my winner. Pleasing head with substance but femininity. Good width to muzzle and length in balance with skull. Enough stop. Ears of good shape and set well apart. Enough length of neck. Shoulder ok with enough upper arm. Good breadth and drop of chest. Slightly longer in the body with slight rounding to rib. Rear assembly was in balance with enough turn of stifle. Stood on low hock. Excellent bone throughout. Stood in new coat so slightly soft in some places but could feel the coarseness around neck and shoulder. Beautiful furnishings to tail and legs. On the move clean unexaggerated paces in all directions.
