Windsor Championship Dog Show 2024
Judge: Mrs J Sparrow
Thank you to the officers and committee of Windsor dog show for the invitation to judge Bichon Frise at Windsor, also to the exhibitors for a super entry of 42 making 60 entries. My very capable stewards Jan & Phil Sheppard , kept the classes moving as we had a large entry to get through and then onto the back to back cub show which was held in the afternoon. We had decided as a breed to have a one minute silence in the ring where we could all gather to remember the 2 ladies that we had sadly lost Anne Toogood & Diane Loynd. The late morning saw the weather improve so that we were able to use both the indoor and outdoors rings, which were large and spacious. The rain held off for the rest of the judging and it was great to see that we were one of the few breeds that ventured out into the mid day sun.
On the whole I think the breed is in a great place, with very little issues with dentition or construction, rear movement was a little varied with some very close behind which is something that needs to be looked at. Presentation was varied and those that I spoke to privately are aware of the issues on the day, coat texture is something that we need to be aware of, quite a few had very harsh coats the standard does call for a fine, silky coat

Thank you for bringing your veterans out today, it is a way of newer exhibitors being able to see some of the quality dogs from a few years ago and see that you can keep a Bichon in coat long term and that it is still possible to have litters off them or use them at stud and they can continue to be actively campaigned in the show ring.
1st Place Jaimens Petrichor (Mr D Parkinson) – This 8 year old bitch came into the ring with attitude and was on top form, she was presented in immaculate condition, she is the correct size with a beautiful head and expression, she has a lovely balanced head with the sweetest of expressions, with round dark eyes with good pigmentation giving that typical expression, she has the correct arched neck which she uses , good body and chest nice front correct topline with good tailset and plume , nice rear angulation she has good pigment. She moves with effortless ease around the ring, she is so lively and made sure her presence was known pushed hard in the challenge but was one I did consider for higher honors, it was such a close call. Best Veteran In Breed
2nd Place Ch Starforth Sweet Surprise (Miss G P Stafford) – This 8 year bitch is truly at one with her handler she was just pipped to the post, cannot believe that she is already 8 years old. It only seems a couple of years since I awarded her that magical third CC but it was 6 years ago. She has the most endearing head and expression with the darkest of eyes with amazing halos emphasising them, she has the correct head with a nice arched neck leading into well placed shoulders she has such a lovely body with the correct chest, good straight front, she has the correct topline with nice tailset and plum, correct rear angulation, good pigment throughout, she moves out with style and keeps the correct profile

1st Place - Wolimorb Top Gun (Miss J Bromilow) – Well this young man has so much about him, he must have read the characteristics of a bichon before he entered the ring, a gay happy and lively dog who is friendly and outgoing, He draws the eye immediately and one cannot help smile, he carries a lot of coat and perhaps from the ring looks a little unbalanced but once you put your hands on him, he screams breed type, he has a really beautiful head, with a good dark eye with halos, good pigmentation, , his head is balanced with the correct skull to muzzle ration, he has a nice arched neck leading into correctly placed shoulders. He has a nice straight font, for his age he has the correct amount of chest and body you can certainly tell he is well exercised and on the move when he settles he carries himself so well giving that balanced and effortless reach and drive one requires, His tailset is correct with a lovely plume. He is presented in immaculate condition with the correct fine silky coat. This is one young dog that I am sure will have a glittering career and I will watch with interest going forward, Best Puppy in Breed.

1st Place - Wolimorb When Stars Align (Mrs S Burnett) – This young man, just needed a bit of time to settle, on the table he has a nice dark eye he has good pigmentation for me would prefer a bit more pigment in the halos, he has a nice head which is balanced, he has the correct arched neck which he uses. He has a nice body for his age, he has the correct rear angulation, he has a nice plume on his tail, Handler just needs to settle as at times as she was pulling his plume almost flat on his back and that alters his side profile, he moved well both coming and going, his coat I think had suffered with the moist atmosphere.
2nd Place - Lovjen Angel of Fire (Mrs M Johnstone) – This young man is the correct size he has a good dark eye, his head is balanced with a pleasing expression, he has an arched neck, leading into correct shoulders he has a good body and chest, he has just enough rear angulation, he has a good coat, he moved well for me would just like a bit more exuberance whilst on the move.

1st Place - Delbrupar The Category Is avec Snowpups (Mrs M B Dean) – This young male is the correct size, he is handled in a very professional manner, he moves with ease around the ring, he is sound both coming and going, he is really pleasing to go over on the table. He has a nice dark eye with good pigment throughout, he has a balanced head with just enough neck which he uses so looks very smart in profile, he has the correct shoulders, he has a good topline and nice body for age, he has the correct tailset, plume and carriage, he has just enough rear angulation, for me he just needs a bit more coat to complete the picture. He was very much a bichon when he was being stacked and certainly new when to play up.
2nd Place - Luka Songbird (Miss V.j Crawford) – This is always a difficult decision when you are judging to be asked to judge a dog when it is not presented in the normal manner. I was lucky to be around when Paddy Holbrook-O’hara used to show bichons and she would not present them as per the norm, it did not make them any less a bichon, for me today I asked myself did the dog fit the breed standard except for presentation, and today looking at the dog against the standard yes it did. This male has a nice eye with good pigmentation, his head is balanced with the lengthy of muzzle 3:5 he had a reasonable neck with good shoulders, he has a very good body with correct topline, would prefer better rear angulation he moves soundly. Just lacking presentation by owner.

Entries: 6 Absentees: 1 – This was probably the hardest decision today, this class was so full of quality bitches, on any other day they I am sure they would trade places. For me on movement today I can say that it was the more precise ladies that won out not the quickest mover. The standard calls for balanced and effortless and when something is moving quickly on the rear, the corresponding front action is affected.
