ENGLISH TOY TERRIER (BLACK & TAN)

I would like to thank the officers and committee for the invitation to judge at this show. Also to my very capable stewards Duncan & Bethany who kept the ring running smoothly.

I would just like to mention a few points firstly ear shape , the standard calls for a candle flame shape, slightly pointed tip, placed high upon back of skull and proportionately close together. This is so important within the breed I found a few today with various shapes of ears but not quite candle flame shaped.

Also hind action should be smooth with ease and precise combined with drive, and there should be a flowing quality to indicate true soundness, quiet a few today lacked the drive required on the clear and were quiet restricted in rear movement which meant that the typical flowing movement in profile was lost.

My last appointment for the breed should have been at Midland Counties in 2023 but I was brought forward a year to act as a stand in judge for 2022 at Midland Counties.

We started judging at 8.30am in the main hall and due to only a few rings starting at that time it was very noisy and quite echoey and a number of exhibits were not at their best with their ears.

Class PD (4 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: ROSKELL, Miss C Witchstone Silent Wish With Rahima – This 9 month old puppy is very balanced he came into the ring with an attitude, he is an ideal size, he moves around the ring with style and elegance he is allowed to move with the correct front action and as he is shown at the correct speed he carries himself so well in profile. He has the correct wedge shaped with just enough fill under the cheeks, he has the correct muzzle with a slight stop he has a lovely small dark almond shaped eye, with well-placed candle flame ears which he uses at all times, he has a nice graceful arched neck leading into good shoulders, he has a nice chest for his age and once that develops he will complete the picture in profile. He has the correct bone with nice neat feet. He is compact in body with the correct curve in back from behind the shoulders to the loin, he has a nice tail set and carriage, he moves true both coming and going.

 2nd: PARTINGTON-PALMER, Mrs C & PALMER, Mr Leslie Roy Etruria Hear The Word – This smart male was a little over awed by the venue and his handler certainly struggled at times with him, He is slightly older than winner, he is a nice size and is balanced. He has a pleasing head and expression he has a wedge shaped head, he has nice dark almond shaped eyes he has a slight stop, he was a little reticent in using his ears but when he does he has the correct expression, he has a nice arched neck leading into well laid back shoulders, he has the correct depth of chest , nice straight front with good feet, he has a the correct topline which falls away to the tail, he has good rear which is nicely muscled. He moves well in profile with a nice front extension just wasn’t settled when moving up and down as he was a bit erratic

3rd: HOWARD, Mrs Cecilia Margaret & HOWARD, Mr Donald Lasagesse Jumpin Jack Flash

Class JD (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: HOLLEY, Mrs Joyce & HOLLEY, Mr Kevin Valeast Dream Of Dreams – Res Dog CC, This young man is certainly a handful but he has so many qualities. He is a well balance male and ideal size, he has the correct balanced head with a nice wedge shaped head, he has a slight stop, he has a dark almond eye he has good well placed ears which he uses at all times, he is sleek and cleanly built, he has the correct arched neck leading into well laid back shoulders, he has a lovely straight front with nice bone neat compact feet, he has a nice chest, correct curve to topline from shoulders to loin, correct loin nice buttocks correct rear angulation with nice muscle tone, he moves with ease and has a good front action with good drive to rear, he keeps a nice profile whilst on the move. He certainly has attitude.

2nd: IMRIE, Mrs W Norris Amalric Butch Cassidy – This 14 month old male is more masculine than 1st, he has a very attractive head with the correct wedge shape he has a slight stop with really expressive dark almond eyes. He has well placed ears which when he used them gave him the correct expression, he has a nice arched neck leading into well placed shoulders he has a better chest than one, he has lovely=y straight front with nice feet he has a good topline which curves from the shoulders to the loin, he has the correct tailset and carriage he has a nice well-muscled rear. On the move he was a little erratic and this affected his movement in profile and when moving away. On the stand he was leaning which lost him the class today.

Class PGD (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: INCH, Mrs C & INCH, Miss R Edalene Upside Down JW – 20 month old male, he is a nice size he is very alert and is totally at one with his handler, he has a an appealing head which is balanced, he has a soulful expression with a nice dark almond eye, slight stop, with well placed ears, he has a nice arched neck leading in well laid back shoulders, he has a nice straight front, with the correct bone, he has neat feet, he has a nice depth of chest, he has a good topline with a nice curve , he has the correct tail set and carriage, he has nice rear angulation, on the move he looks good in profile he was leaning into handler whilst moving up and down .

Class LD (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: OAKDEN, Mr Anthony & CONWAY, Mr Paul Spawood Run For Cover – I really like this 18 month male, he has the most endearing head and expression, he is an ideal size and is balanced, he has the correct head with a nice wedge, he has well placed ears which he uses all the time he has a good arched neck leading into well laid back shoulders he has nice straight front, and correct bone, he has a nice topline with a good curve from shoulder to loin. He has a good depth of chest he has nice rear angulation he moved soundly both coming and going would like a bit more get and go as he didn’t seem to be enjoying himself today. He won this class on his breed type today.

2nd: PARTINGTON-PALMER, Mrs C & DAVIES, MISS CLAIRE Witchstone Somethin Brewin – Another male who just didn’t seem to be on top form today. He is a bit more masculine than one, he is a bit stronger in head than I like but his head is balanced, he has the correct wedge shaped one requires for me he just has a bit more thickness around the cheeks, he has nice almond eyes, with well placed ears which when he used them he does have the correct expression, he has good neck, leading into well placed shoulders, he is very well developed in chest and as a result he is a little widder in front than, he has a good topline with curve, he is well muscled in rear, he moved well in profile. For me he is carrying a bit to much weight and he just wasn’t giving his all today.

1st: DIXON, Mrs Lisa Jane & DIXON, Mr Graeme Ch Witchstone Mine's A Double At Lasagesse

Dog CC This is one male I have judged before, he is 5 years old now. I looked back at my critic after judging an my notes are very similar, he came into the ring with attitude, he is an ideal size and is so well balanced, he still is so impressive. On his walk around he certainly holds his own, he moves correctly with a good extended trot he carries himself so well. He has a lovely typical head with the correct head proportions he has the correct wedge shape, with a slight stop, he has a lovely alert eye he has well placed candle shaped ears which he uses. He has a nice arched neck leading into well laid back shoulders, he has a good chest and nice straight front with nice feet, he has a good curve to his topline from shoulder to loin, he has the correct tailset and carriage, he is well muscled he moves so soundly both coming and going.

2nd: WHITEHOUSE, Mrs & Mr N & S Twowayshouse Tudor King For Dalmonde – A 4 year old male he has a nice head and expression, he has a wedge shaped head with a nice almond eye, slight stop, would prefer a higher set ear. He has a nice arched neck, for me he has a bit more depth to his chest and this affects his profile, he is a little widder in front, he has a straight front with neat feet, he has a nice curve to his topline he has the correct tailset and carriage, on the move he looks nice in profile but coming and going he had a tendency to lean which meant he was a little eractic.

Class VD (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: HOWARD, Mrs Cecilia Margaret & HOWARD, Mr Donald Lasagesse Starman – This 7 year old male he is a well balanced male, he came into the ring very sedately and this is how he stayed, he is very precise on the move and lacked the flowing movement one expects in the breed. He has the correct head with a nice expression, he has the correct wedge with a slight stop nice dark almond eyesm, he has nice candle flame ears. He has a nice arched neck leading into well placed shoulders, he has the correc depth of chest, good straight front with nice neat feet,he has a good curve to his topline with the correct tailset and carriage. He moved soundly both forward and aft.

Class SBD (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: FIERS, Mrs J & Mr P Lokeren Brooks Yonas – This 7 month old puppy is very much a baby, he was 4th in the puppy class. He is at present very immature in body. He has a wedge shaped head, he has the correct wedge shaped with a nice dark almond eye he has large candle flame ears that he does use. He has a nice arch to his neck, he needs to mature in chest, he has a good front but because he lacks chest he is a bit lose at the elbow at present, he is still very much a baby and this can be seen whilst he is on the move as he is a bit erratic both coming and going he just need time. Best Special Beginner

Class PB (2 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: CROWLEY, Ms J Adargwn Geneva – This young lady was a little overwhelmed by the occasion, on the move she took a while to get into her stride, but once she settled she does have a nice front action, she is very immature in body at the moment and needs time, she has a feminine head with a nice wedge, slight stop nice dark eye she has large candle flame ears but they are well placed, she has a nice arched neck, she is lacking in chest at present so that means her elbows are a little lose, she is a little down on her pasterns at present. She has a nice topline with correct tailset. Once she settled on the table she stood really well perhaps needs a bit more table training going forward as this can be forgiven at this age but as she gets older she will need to be a bit more confident on the table.

Class JB (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: PETERS, Mrs Lesley & PETERS, Mr Derek Ettology Cherry Bakewell At Troysel –this young bitch she is 13 month old, she has a very pleasing head with a nice wedge, she has a slight stop, good dark eye, with well placed candle shaped ears which she uses at all times. She has a graceful arched neck leading into well laid back shoulders, she has a nice straight front, she has a good chest with the correct curve from shoulders to loin, she has nice rear angulation, for me she is just a bit longer in loin she moves well in profile with a good front action, she moves true both coming and going.

Class PGB (3 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: INCH, Mrs C & INCH, Miss R Edalene Scoops Ahoy – This 20 month old bitch, he an ideal size, she has a good head with the correct wedge shape one requires, she has a slight stop, she has a dark eye, she has well placed eras which she uses at all time, she is very attentive to her handler and she has a nice arched neck leading in well laid back shoulders she has a straight front leading into neat feet, she has the correct curve to her topline from shoulder to loin, with a nice tailset and carriage she has good angulation, on the stand she has a tendency to tuck up a bit to much so loses her balance. She moves well in profile but she is very precise in her rear movement which means she can be a bit erractic going away.

2nd: CROWLEY, Ms J Adargwn Geneva

Class LB (2 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: DIXON, Mrs Lisa Jane & DIXON, Mr Graeme Lasagesse Black Magic Woman – This 19 month old bitch, is in excellent condition she is so at one with her handler and never put a foot wrong, she has a lovely expression, with the correct wedge shape, she has a slight stop, nice dark almond eyes, well placed candle flame ears which she uses at all times, she is so alert. She has a nice arched graceful neck, leading well laid back shoulders, she has a good chest, her elbows are close to her chest, she has a nice straight front with nice neat feet, she has the correct topline with curve from shoulder to loin, with a good tailset and carriage,

She moves with an extended trot she is sound both coming and going.

Class OB (7 Entries) Abs: 2

This was a really lovely class to judge and I would like to say all of these bitches had some brilliant qualities and it was just minor things that split the decisions

1st: HAFFENDEN, Mrs Hazel & WOOD, Mr Jack Nasabe Play The Game JW – Bitch CC This was a stunning young bitch she was on top form. She is so typical of the breed with such an alert expression she is elegant and well balanced. She has a really appealing head with a lovely wedge shape with a slight stop, he has a really soulful expression she has a dark almond eye with lovely candle flame shape ear which she uses at all times. She has a lovely arched neck leading in well laid back shoulders, she has a lovely straight front with nice neat feet, she has a good chest with a nice tuck up, her elbows at close to her chest, she has a lovely topline with a the correct curve from shoulder to loin, she has a great tailset and carriage, she has a lovely rear with nice angulation. She moves with the correct front action with nice extended trot she has enough drive on the rear she moved true both coming and going. In the challenge for best of breed she shone so she went Best of Breed.

2nd: WHITEHOUSE, Mrs & Mr N & S Amalric Coco Chanel With Dalmonde JW –Res CC I had judged this bitch previously a real baby at 6 months old and it was lovely to see how she matured. She is so well balanced another, she elegant and compact, she has a lovely wedge shape head with a slight stop, with a nice almond eye she has well set candle flame ears which she uses at all time. She has a nice arched neck leading into well laid back shoulders she has a nice chest with means that her elbows are close to her chest she has a lovely straight front, she has neat feet, she has a lovely topline with a with the correct curve from shoulder to loin, she has a nice tailset and carriage. She has good rear angulation. She is a joy to watch in profile and has a lovely extended trot she moves true both coming and going.

3rd: DIXON, Mrs Lisa Jane & DIXON, Mr Graeme Ch Witchstone Unexpected Gift

Class VB (3 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: HAFFENDEN, Mrs Hazel & WOOD, Mr Jack Ch Witchstone Minnehaha – Best Veteran In Breed & Veteran Group 3 – This 7 year bitch is a lovely bitch, she has a beautiful head with the correct wedge she has a slight stop, she has a lovely dark almond eye, she has well placed candle frame ears. She has a lovely arched neck, leading into well laid back shoulders with a nice chest, her elbows are close to her chest she has a nice straight front, with neat feet. She has a good topline with the correct topline with a nice curve from shoulder to loin she has the correct tailset and carriage, she has good rear angulation. When she moves she has lovely extended trot she moves true in both directions. Even though it took time for her to settle she down she won this class on her breed type.

2nd: INCH, Mrs C & INCH, Miss R Edalene Never Let Me Go

This 8 year old bitch is a lovely sized bitch, she has a very pleasing head with good wedge she has a slight stop she has a dark appealing eye well placed ears which she uses she has a lovely neck leading into well laid back shoulders she has a lovely straight front with neat feet her chest is correct she has the correct curve to her topline with well angulated rear, she carries herself so well in profile she moved well coming and going she was very precise in her rear movement which detracts from the free flowing action that one expects in the breed.

Class GCB (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: CROWLEY, Ms J Int Ch Ir Ch NL Ch Bel Lux Royomas Tennesse Waltz

This bitch was in the open class for me she is a bit on the larger size, I believe she is the mother to the puppy winner, She has a nice head with the correct wedge, a slight stop she a really pleasing almond eye well placed ears set a little widder than I like she has a nice arched neck leading in to well laid back shoulders, she has a straight front abet a bit wider than I like when she does have the correct topline leading into well angulated rear on the move when she settles she moves reasonably well, for me her elbows are not as close to chest as one wants and this explains her erratic front moment.
