Bath Championship Show 26th May 2024.
Cairn Terriers.
My thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge at their show and to the exhibitors for their entries, it was most appreciated. This is a great venue these days, you could not want for better rings, which were a good size with ultra short grass.
The weather forecast for the day had not been very promising, but we were lucky to just have one horrendous downpour with thunder and lightning, which the dogs coped with remarkably well. It was a shame the limit bitch class took the brunt of the change in conditions. I attempted to have at least one go round the full space of the ring but sadly the weather just became too much. I know our dogs are meant to be hardy and in the old days before covered tents we would all have been stood out in it, but it was just not fair on dogs or their handlers. My regret is that class did not get same opportunity as everyone else to show of their paces as the covered area was very restricted to assess movement.
Overall, I found good mouths with just a couple being on the edge, a couple of kinks in tails and in a few classes I had to balance this against the dogs’ other qualities. Overall temperaments were what we would expect from Cairns, friendly and out-going. I found quite a few that were very heavy in front. I think Cairns should be lithe, muscular and agile, not something that goes with heavy fronts. I think the correct balance is the hardest thing to achieve in Cairns, too much on the leg and you lose all angles, get the right angles and sometimes you lose leg length.
Minor Puppy Dog (2).
1st McIntyre’s Castleline Lucas Of Macantsoir.
Quality wheaten puppy that really catches the eye. Attractive head with good stop and small well-placed ears. Strong top line leading to excellent tail set, strong quarters and well let down hocks. Created a lovely outline on the move, holding his top line at all times. Moved well going away but still needs to tighten in front movement. BP.
2nd Munday’s Furythor Reluctant Villain.
Grey Brindle, heavier, larger type than the winner and will take longer to come together. Strong head with good stop. Good harsh coat. Moved very freely just needs to tighten in front and top line. When his front tightens up, I think it will give him a bit more wither height and improve his top line.
Puppy Dog (1).
Inett, Harrison & Bateman’s Carradine My Way Lenny.
Wheaten brindle puppy who is very eye catching. Attractive head with good stop and well-placed ears. Excellent coat coming through which was beautifully presented. On the move really covered the ground holding a good top line. Just needs to use his tail more on the stand to finish the picture.
Post Graduate Dog (4)
1st Thomas & Jone’s Tycadno New Tricks.
Wheaten dog with beautiful head, good stop and well-placed ears. Strong bone, a bit heavy in front and would just like a bit more wither height to balance him out. Straight top line leading to excellent tail set. He maintained this shape on the move covering the ground easily when viewed in profile. A bit wide in rear movement when going away.
2nd Mcintyre’s Macantsaoir Celtic Warrior.
A grey brindle dog totally different type being much higher on the leg and bigger overall. Good head with well-placed ears just not the expression of the winner. Moved freely with good stride on the move, just a bit close coming and going.
3rd Udova’s Barry Burton The Brave.
Limit Dog (5).
1st Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Apple Jack.
This red dog was lovely to go over on the table. Attractive head with good stop and small well-placed ears. Good front construction, strong top line and good quarters. In good coat. Very free mover covering ground well just needs to use his tail on the move more to create the outline I was looking for.
2nd Ballinger’s Cloverbrook Game Set’N Match.
Grey brindle dog, bit bigger overall than the winner, shown in full coat. Attractive head with lovely expression. Straight top line and good tail set. Another free mover that went with a purpose. On the move just didn’t hold his top line as well as he did on the stand.
3rd Waugh’s Glenrood Galaxy At Tribannon.
Open Dog (5).
1st Hogarty’s Ch/Ir Ch Cadagio Another Day In Paradise.
Red dog of lovely size that was so good to go over on the table. Attractive, strong head with good stop and well-placed ears giving a lovely expression. Harsh coat just coming back in. Good shoulders, slightly short in upper arm, flowing to strong top line and excellent tail set. It is on the move he really comes into his own where he covers the ground so easily always maintaining that lovely outline. Very true coming and going. Just lost out to the lovely bitch as she had just tad more front extension but that’s being picky. DCC
2nd Hiam’s Ch Carradine Arfa Pint.
A slightly smaller grey brindle dog who again was lovely to go over on the table. Attractive head, strong top line and good well-muscled hind quarters. Presented beautifully in a really good coat of great texture. Another really good mover who went round the ring effortlessly holding a wonderful outline. For me I would just like him a fraction up on the leg but he was just too sound to ignore. RES CC.
3rd Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Grey Borage.
Special Beginners (1)
1st Dawidowska’s You’re So Bossy Seglavi.
Raw leggy puppy. Good head with good stop and keen expression. Strong top line and good tail set. Straight front and strong quarters. Held this outline on the move. Shown with hardly any furnishings, a good harsh red coat starting to come in. She has the scope to mature into a very smart bitch.
Veteran Bitch (2)
1st Dolan’s Ch Glenrood Spell Dance.
Dark brindle bitch beautifully balanced with attractive head, good stop and good expression. Excellent front construction, straight front, good top line and tail set. Move very truly coming and going and held her shape in profile. Best Veteran.
2nd Smith’s Cannwood Misty Dawn At Gethlee
Larger wheaten bitch with beautiful head, excellent stop, small well carried ears. Carrying just a bit more weight than the winner. Moved very soundly covering the ground well, just not holding the same outline as the winner.
Minor Puppy Bitch (2)
1st Thomas’s Castleline Seren At Tycadno.
Litter sister to the minor puppy dog winner and that same look of quality. Attractive head, good stop with well-placed ears. Good top line and tail set, excellent wheaten coat. Looked lovely in profile on the move but needs to tighten in front movement and a bit close behind.
2nd Saich’s Lindcoly Just a Dram.
In comparison to the winner, very raw and not such an accomplished show girl. Good to go over on the table, in full harsh coat. Well let down hocks which she used on the moved. Now needs to come all together and strengthen in top line.
Puppy Bitch (3)
1st Saich’s Lindcoly Singing Angela
Very showy red brindle in full coat. Attractive head, good top line and tail set. Moved very freely always holding her outline.
2nd You’re So Bossy Seglavi.
3rd Dennis & Waites Svendalens Skye Lantern.
Junior Bitch (2)
1st Hogarty’s Cadagio Let’s Get It Started.
Well up to size red bitch. Beautiful head, good stop, well placed ears. Excellent front construction, strong top line and good tail set and strong quarters. Held this wonderful outline on the move, really covering the ground. If only the whole package was that bit smaller, she would have pushed for top honours.
2nd Shaw’s Ch Tycadno Star Attraction At Honeyhall.
Another beautiful wheaten brindle bitch, far more the size I prefer. Really attractive head, deep stop, small ears with lovely expression. Good top line and tail set. One of the best movers coming and going all day. Unfortunately, she gave her handler such a hard time going round, intent on smelling the grass just didn’t give me that outline I was looking for.
Post Graduate Bitch (9).
1st Saich’s Lindcoly Picture Perfect.
Grey brindle bitch in full harsh coat. Attractive head, well placed ears. Good top line and tail set. Moved really well covering the ground and holding her outline at all times.
2nd Parker-Tucker’s Birselaw Floral Dancer Of Uniquecottage.
I liked the balance of this wheaten bitch. Attractive head with good expression. Good top line and tail set. Moved well in profile holding her outline, just a little bit restricted in front movement. Could project herself a bit more.
3rd Bubb’s Wandris Please Yourself JW.
Limit Bitch (6)
What a shame for this class. I really feel they didn’t get the opportunity to show their virtues because of the dreadful downpour. The inside ring was just too small to really assess movement and allow them to settle.
1st Thompson’s Castleline Maitree.
This wheaten bitch coped with the conditions best of all. Attractive head with good stop and small ears. Straight top line, good tail set and strong quarters. Moved very freely and was good coming and going. Would just like a tad more length of leg and was carrying a few extra pounds. I see she is the mother of the two promising minor puppies.
2nd Parker-Tucker’s Sandrio Zinnia Of Uniquecottage.
Really liked the balance of this grey brindle bitch. Good head, small ears. Good front construction, straight top line and good tail set and strong quarters. Quite short of coat but what there was good quality. Saw flashes of good movement and lovely outline just didn’t make the most of herself. Would have been lovely to see her outside in better conditions.
3rd Dolan’s Glenrood Midnight Spell.
Open Bitch (3)
1st Waugh’s Ch Glory Daze At Tribannon.
Just the balance I was looking for in this wheaten brindle bitch. Beautiful head, good stop, well placed ears with lovely expression. Neck flows to good shoulders, straight front, strong top line and good tail set and strong quarters. She was shown in a full harsh coat. It’s on the move she really comes into her own, really covering the ground with good extension holding a wonderful outline. BCC and BOB.
2nd Firth’s Ch Cairngold Chiquitita..
Another beautifully balanced bitch. Attractive head, good stop and small well-placed ears. Shown in harsh red full coat. Good front construction, straight front and strong quarters. Good top line and tail set. She also held a great outline on the move and was so true coming and going. Very close up between these two bitches the winner just had a bit more freedom and vitality on the move. RES BCC
