Paignton & District Fanciers' Association

Breed: Saluki

Paignton & District F. A. – 4th August 2024

SALUKI

My thanks to this progressive Association for their hospitality and for their invitation to judge this wonderful breed. We had a lovely spacious ring, and the weather was just perfect for showing. My thanks to Stewards Eve and Dave who had quite a busy time but mainly thank you to the exhibitors for giving me the privilege to assess your hounds, there is only a small window of opportunity in which to present and make the best of the dogs you are showing, and competition is always so tough; I was looking for an elegant moderate hound without exaggeration that could move with reach & drive; thank you for accepting the placings with good grace.

1st: Copperthwaite’s Al Caliphs Shamir Bey, feathered cream, what an elegant & stunning boy, at just about 9 months not quite there yet but has breed typical classic lines; his head is balanced, he has dark oval eye & super expression with good pigment beautifully outlined, mobile ears set high, strength of neck not exaggerated to a well laid shoulder & good front, finely boned with good substance & strength, lovely ribbing & brisket good, excellent depth & good cut up, muscled loin giving good topline, complementing quarters, strength of pastern with excellent feet, good tail set & held down well on the move which was light & effortless with an even flowing stride, quality youngster who, given time & luck, should go far. Unfortunately, there was an exhibitor who missed this class, which was a real shame as the cost of exhibiting these days is high; having asked, we understood the class was called three times before being started and it was assumed they were absent.

1st: Bater’s Jarletts Arlo The Brave upstanding red with elegant lines & an unexaggerated profile; had a good backskull, oval eye, strength & length of neck, straight front with slight slope to pastern, nice depth & good cut up, was strong in his loin & had a reasonable and complementing angle to his quarters; was slightly loose coming towards however his profile movement was light & purposeful.

1st: Littlechild & Danks-Kemish Ravensett Musarra instantly appealing slightly rangy red shown in the most lovely tone & condition; he had an elegant & refined head shape with good eye & desired expression, had a good length of neck & well placed shoulders, preference for return to be fractionally less to balance with rear, bladed bone, good depth & a muscled loin, angled quarters with good first & second thigh, feathered tail held well. Today on the move he was slightly closer behind than preferred, however he is a quality male who will doubtless gain his title.

2nd: 3728 Rickard’s Velourias Las Vegas appealed for his overall shape, shaded gold/grizzle, head of good balance nice proportions throughout, good eye & expression, strong neck to nicely laid shoulder, good depth & ribbing, good cut up, loin, croup & tail set good, moderately angled fore & aft. Moving widely in front today & needed a bit more purpose to accentuate his frame to advantage as he is a nice male.

1st: Strong & Strong’s Shahzad Zaki Ter Dolen (imp Bel) impressive & handsome pale fawn with ample fringing & feathering, lovely balanced outline although tall enough for my preference, masculine with a good degree of elegance, head of good strength & well proportioned, dark expressive eye, super ear fringes, good length of neck, well laid shoulder & good return, finely boned, good feet, has good depth to brisket & is nicely ribbed back, strong loin of just the right length, good croup & tail set, lovely quarters with good muscle tone to second thigh, strong hocks. In profile he had the most flowing and light movement. Completely new to me, he looked a picture & well deserved his placing, pleased to award him Dog CC which I understand to be his second and wish him well for the future.

2nd Quadling’s Ch Classicus Alron With Malenkhai beautiful type red/grizzle, classic proportions & of good size, lovely flowing lines with everything fitting together very nicely indeed with no exaggerations. Super male I liked very much with a lovely head & expression, held his topline well on the move just needed to put in that bit more effort to pip today’s winners.

3rd: Cole’s El'ubaid's Buckingham Palace Doucai (Imp NLD)

1st: Rabey-Wilkinson’s Waqiiq V't Swartshof For Greatplains (imp Ndl(au) have judged this red/grizzle before a few years ago, classic and of nice proportions, lovely head & eye, ears with fabulous fringes, lovely neck to good shoulder placement, good front although slightly down on his pastern, most lovely ribcage with good depth, super cut up, strong loin, complementing quarters, moving well here with a lightness to his stride, nicely handled.

2nd: Goss’s Classicus Baryshnikov typy black/cream I have also judged before, now 8 years old & although he is well constructed he lacked elegance & was a little on the heavy side today which spoilt the overall look. He has a lovely front assembly & well filled brisket, good depth & nice gentle rise to loin. Today his weight seemed to affect his movement, lacking in the lightness required of this breed.

1st: Sanders Parker, & Révay’s Lilian Giliath Classicus (imp Cze) very attractive cream, so elegant with lovely substance combined, her head was one of the best here, nice dark eye & good expression, conformation throughout came into its own when moving & should do well in the future. Handled well and in tip top condition. Best Puppy and well done for being short-listed in the Group.

1st: Sanders Parker & Révay’s Era Lilian Giliath Classicus (imp Cze) – critique as above.

PGB (3 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: Copperthwaite Al Caliphs Belisama, very graceful looking cream with an ideal outline on the stack, beautifully constructed with an elegant head & super eye with typical expression, ideal in size, typifies the Saluki breed standard well, was unsettled today & seemed to have picked up something in her foot, still very young but would expect her to have a good future.

2nd: Layton-Smith’s Velourias Tutti Vruiti grizzle/ irish marked collar, lightly feathered, very elegant & shapely if a little rangy & loose at this stage, feel she needs time to firm & body up to strengthen her front as she is nicely constructed & could cover plenty of ground, promising.

 LB (5 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: Cole’s, El'ubaid's Zulu Imp Nld (Imp NLD) fawn, she was very feminine & had a dark eye, great head carriage too! Adequate neck to nicely placed shoulder, good depth & ribbing, would prefer slighty more rise to loin as she looked a bit flat in stacked profile, nicely angulated rear & held everything together well on the move which earned her first place, well handled.

2nd: Mackenzie Loughran’s Classicus Ophelia attractive fawn & liked her overall type. On the stack she displayed a lovely flowing outline & was of good size, really appealed for her construction but for some reason didn’t get that together when moving, just needs that bit of positivity to pull it all into one package & she will do well.

3rd: Everton’s Savuka Rashiqah With Kasra

Class 1891 OB (3 Entries) Abs: 0

Nice class

1st: Sanders Parker’s Ch Classicus Felicitas JW red/parti feminine & elegant, stands well over her ground with no exaggerations, classic outline, lovely neck placement to shoulder & return just right, front very sound, good pastern & feet, good depth & ribcage, loin is strong & topline good, hipbones set well angled hindquarters, first & second thigh having good muscle tone, hocks low & strong & uses her feet very well, moves lightly with an even stride holding her elbows well coming towards. Not flashy or overdone in any way, tip top condition, this exhibitor knows how to get the best from her dogs, Bitch CC & BOB

2nd Layton-Smith’s Ch Velourias Dee Dee Vine aptly named glamorous black/grizzle of superb quality & shown in gleaming condition, gorgeous feminine balanced head with oval dark eyes looking beyond with a wonderful expression, hands slid evenly over her beautiful construction which was very flowing as was her profile movement, missed the top spot here by an absolute whisker, top class lady to be proud of, Res. CC.
