LEEDS CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 27th JULY 2024. ENGLISH SETTERS

I would like to thank the Leeds Society for the invitation to judge this lovely breed, there was such a friendly atmosphere around the ringside and I thoroughly enjoyed my day. I felt some exhibits needed attention to presentation of coat and several had very long nails. I was extremely pleased with my final line-ups and the overall quality of the breed and I thank exhibitors for the lovely entry on awarding my first set of CCs in the breed.

PUPPY DOG (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: GOUTORBE, Wansleydale Beekeeper At Redhara

A very pleasing tricolour youngster with a clean outline. Most attractive head, oval in skull with good eye colour. He has long lean neck and correct angulation fore and aft which gives him such a balanced appearance when stacked. He moved out steadily with such a true gait for a youngster at one with his handler, a worthy Best Puppy in breed and shortlisted in a quality puppy group, should have a bright future.

2nd: DERRY & SCHONEVILLE, & WILLIAMSON, Hawklawn Hazzard County At Balvenie

Built on a larger frame than my winner. Pleasing in head, with adequate stop and deep in muzzle. He has well laid shoulders and already has plenty of body depth. Well ribbed with strong hindquarters and correct tail set. Rather a handful today and erratic on the move, he should come good with maturity.

JUNIOR DOG (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: STRONACH, Mariglen Escape To Victory

An unschooled youngster and I believe his and the handlers first show. Attractive head with kind expression. Has good depth of chest and good angulation fore and aft. I would prefer more bone and substance and he has some development to come. Very unsettled on the move in his class but will improve with practice, I do hope his handler will persevere with him.

POSTGRADUATE DOG (5 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: SEAMAN, & EICKERT, Mariglen Just George

An attractive blue very well balanced and of pleasing medium size. Masculine in head with correct earset with a very attractive expression with oval dark eye. He is so well put together with correct body proportions, strong hindquarters with good width to thigh and strong hocks. He has an smartness about him and I found him stylish and very sound on the move, holding his topline well. Well presented in good coat and condition.

2nd: SNOOK, Moorbrook Mogul Of March

This attractive blue has a super masculine head and expression, correct amount of stop and lovely pigmentation. He is clean over neck and has a strong front assembly with straight forelegs of correct bone and well arched feet. Solid topline, and well sprung ribs and correct rear angulation He has quite a dark coat, but I found him overall an attractive and sound male. He lost out on carrying too much weight today.

3rd: THOMSON, Mrs K A Maursett Morganite For Caspellwynd

LIMIT DOG (5 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: VALLANCE Rowanmyle Was A Skellum ShCEx

I was drawn to this blue male for his overall balance and clean outline. Handsome masculine head, well defined occiput and deep in muzzle. Super front assembly with correct round bone and good shoulder lay. He is well ribbed with a solid topline, good turn of stifle and stood on strong hocks which gave him a strong rear action on the move. He won the class with his free sound movement. Considered him for Res CC

2nd: CARR Balvenie Blue Lagoon

A well put together dog of good size. Very pleasing in head with dark eye and oval shape skull with ears set on low. Strong neck and firmly built throughout, strong over loin and correct tailset. Moved with good rear drive just tending to pin in on front movement today.

3rd: WILLIAMS Bournehouse Abracadabra

OPEN DOG (6 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: COOK, Pernickety Quiddity

This was a class of top quality exhibits, my first place was a splendid orange dog. On the stack he just fits together correctly. He has a delightful masculine head without any coarseness with good finish to muzzle. Neck of good length with excellent front assembly and tight feet. He has muscular hindquarters, adequate turn of stifle and good width to thighs. A sound and effortless mover who kept his topline well with a happy slashing tail, his movement won him the class, he was really enjoying his day. Presented in tip top muscular condition and in good coat. Very well handled in tandem with his owner. Pleased to award him the CC, I understand this is his second.

2nd: MCKIERNAN, Ir Sh Ch Sh Ch Bushbane Celtic Rant

Another top quality orange dog that demands attention. Full of breed type, attractive masculine head with correct eye shape and colour. Very clean over shoulder and neck with correct return of upperarm and elbows tight in. Firm topline with good width to loin and well muscled hindquarters, slightly shorter in leg than my winner. Moved well on an easy stride with correct tail carriage. Presented in full bloom and gleaming coat, turned out in immaculate condition as always from this kennel, a close decision for top honours Res CC

3rd: SIMPSON, Sh Ch Dalreavoch Northern Legend

VETERAN DOG (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: LAWSON Wansleydale Dorian Gray JW ShCEx OSW

Stood alone today, but this tri-colour was a worthy winner. Looking in great condition for his seven years. Quality head with good length of foreface and depth to muzzle. Strong front assembly with good depth, well muscled hindquarters and shown in good coat. A little lethargic on the move in the heat. Best Veteran and made the cut in the Veteran Group, well done.

SPECIAL BEGINNER D/B (5 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: KEMP-TAYLOR, Quensha's Strawberry Swing

This was a lovely Special Beginners class, headed by a very sound three year old tri-colour bitch. She has an attractive head with expressive dark eyes, adequate depth to muzzle. Well angulated forehand and has good depth with level back and good width to loin. She moved out freely on an even stride and won this class with ease. Later placed in a quality Post-Graduate class and went on to win Special Beginners Group 2, very well done.

2nd: CARR, Balvenie Blue Lagoon (repeat)

3rd: SNOOK, Moorbrook Mogul Of March (repeat)

Class MINOR PUPPY BITCH (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: MCLOUGHLIN Arabin Love Maybe

A real baby, very pretty head and dark eye with good pigmentation. She is developing well and has a pleasing outline when stacked. Good straight front, correct shoulder lay and adequate rear angulation. She moved confidently for a youngster, has a lovely silky coat but looked very immature in the puppy challenge, best puppy bitch.

JUNIOR BITCH (4 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: ALLEN, BOTT, & MORGAN, Quensha Glitter And Gold

I was really drawn to this young orange bitch, when stacked she has a super clean outline and is so well balanced. She is feminine and elegant with a beautiful head of correct proportions with well defined occiput. Long clean slightly arched neck leading to excellent lay of shoulder, She already has adequate depth for a youngster and behind she has a good bend of stifle and strong straight hocks. Moved confidently with grace, just needs her coat to finish to reach top honours.

2nd: HUTCHINSON & DENNIS, Mariglen My Heart Will Go On With Monaysbridge

A very promising blue bitch, with a classic setter head with appealing mischievous expression. She has the best of fronts with correct shoulder lay adequate upperarm and strong pasterns. She is very put well together throughout, with a level topline. Good width to hindquarters with well turned stifles and moved out well, just not as mature as my winner.

3rd: CORFIELD, Balvenie Loch Maree

POST GRADUATE BITCH (11 Entries) Abs: 3

1st: BUCKLEY, Fishwick Fortune Cookie

What a promising two year tri-colour, I thought her quite special, she stood out in the line for her overall balance and super outline. Needs some attention to coat but could not be denied her win today. She has a pretty head with correct skull to foreface proportions, strong neck and super front assembly. Just the right amount of depth, strong firm body and well angulated hindquarters. Unfortunately she gave up on the move today in the challenge and I couldn’t consider her any further.

2nd: STEPHENSON, Mariglen Wave Dancer For Bondgate JW

Head of good proportions with oval shape, lovely expression and dark eye. Clean cut over neck with shoulders well set. She has correct length to height ratio and is well put together throughout. Correct bend of stifle and well arched feet. Not as positive moving away as my winner today.

3rd: PATON Bournehouse Eternal Flame For Meadowfoot JW

LIMIT BITCH (7 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: LOAKES, Goldbirch Hearts Desire JW

I judged this quality tricolour bitch as a raw youngster and she has certainly fulfilled her early promise. She has a beautiful balanced head, dark eye and lovely expression. Excellent shoulders and correct return of upperarm, a strong level topline, well ribbed and good width to loin. She has adequate rear angulation with strong hocks, on the move she covered the ground with style and grace with a lashing tail. She has an elegance and style about her that gives her such ring presence, a very worthy CC winner. Presented in perfect coat and condition which gave her the edge to take BOB.

2nd: WILLIAMS, Bournehouse Eternal Love

A super orange bitch of excellent breed type who oozes quality. Classic feminine head, oval skull with good eye colour. She has an eye-catching outline when stacked and is so balanced throughout. Very clean neck leading into correct lay of shoulder with good depth of chest. Well muscled hindquarters with excellent angulation. Very close decision in this class and I thought she could be my Res CC winner, but unfortunately not moving to her full potential in the challenge.

3rd: DYKES, Caleydene Connextion

OPEN BITCH (4 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: MCKIERNAN, Sh Ch Bushbane Celtic Banter

A quality orange bitch that presents a well-balanced outline when stacked. She has a typical head with correct skull to foreface proportions, strong neck and super front assembly. Correct back length with level topline, good width to thigh. She has the right amount of depth and strong well angulated hindquarters, moved out freely with good head carriage. Not as feminine as my CC winner, presented in admirable coat of silky texture. A very worthy Show Champion of the breed. Res CC

2nd: PATON, Bournehouse Secret Destiny For Meadowfoot

This orange bitch had such sound construction, she has a super front assembly with elbows tight in. Very clean through neck, adequate depth of chest, well ribbed back, strong over loin with good sweep to stifle and strong hocks. I found her very sound on the move driving well from her strong hocks . Did not have the coat and condition of my top winners.
