Breed: Retriever (Curly Coated)

Scottish Kennel Club - Curly Coated Retrievers.

An enjoyable engagement on my first appointment in this breed which I have had the pleasure of owning over the years. I was impressed with coats and condition of most here today. Heads varied in quality. It was pleasing to see some promising puppies on show. It bodes well for the future. I thought my top winners were really good examples of the breed. Delighted to see my Best of Breed go on to Group 3, win the Veteran Group and ultimately Best Veteran in Show.

1st: BARBER’s Tonispada Vuori Vincent By Blanshard

Well-made boy of 19 months. Fine head with good length of foreface and dark eyes. Correct in front with good round feet. Firm topline and good tail set. Strong quarters with hocks nicely let down. Won here on his free movement.

2nd: DOOLEY’s Rowancurl Pullman Porter

Broader in head than the winner and lighter in eye. He has a strong neck of good length, straight, well boned front legs. Good length to his ribs and correct rear angulation. Movement was affected by his interest in the smells on the ring surface. He came back in a later class and moved a lot better then.

Thicker set all through. He has a correctly proportioned head with slight stop and well placed ears. Good front assembly with good width to his chest. He has good rear angulation. 1st: STEPHENS’ Ravenho Up Town Girl For Brightmeadow JW

I had the pleasure of judging this one as a youngster and predicted a bright future. She has matured well and turned out to be a worthy champion. Not as big as some but so well constructed and balanced through. Her head has the correct planes, dark eyes and well placed ears giving that typical curly expression. Strong clean neck of good length leads to sloping shoulders. She is well ribbed with good width and depth to her chest and well-muscled, firm couplings. Moderately angulated quarters provide the correct movement. She was presented with crisp tight curled coat. A well-deserved CC but had to give way to her father for Best of Breed.

2nd: SPRAGGINS’ Tusepo Amazing Love

Loved the head on this nicely coloured liver girl. Correctly proportioned head with kind oval eyes and a slight stop. Well made through with sloping shoulders and strong quarters. She has a deep chest and good width throughout. Just tended to lose her top line on the move today.

1st: STEAD’s Firecurl Firefly Of Holmecliffe

Third in the puppy class and will take longer to come together than those ahead of her there. Pleasing in head which should only improve with age. Well put together in front with sloping shoulders and good, strong well boned legs. Still needing to strengthen behind but has plenty of time on her side.

2nd: CLAYTON’s Firecurl Ace

Sister to the winner and placed fourth in the puppy class today. She moves well for her age, is pretty in head with correct planes and well-shaped eyes. She still needs to fill out in body as she looks a little tall at the moment. Needs to strengthen behind. She too has plenty of time on her side.
