Gundog Group

I would like to thank the secretary Leila Tarabad and her efficient and welcoming committee for affording me the honour to judge my first Gundog Group at Boston Championship Show 2024. It was a true honour and privilege. Rutland Showground is just superb, with beautifully manicured flat rings, and plenty of space for the dogs and all the paraphernalia that accompanies us show folk. The ‘Best in Show’ ring was spacious allowing all dogs to show themselves off to advantage.

I was spoilt for choice in this full group, a huge thank you to the breed judges for putting through a lovely selection of ‘Best of Breeds’.

For my shortlist, I selected the Brittany – Sh Ch Bonapartist Pickpocket, German Wirehaired Pointer – Sh Ch Glenquin Athena, Irish Setter – Sh Ch Riverbrue Morning Glory, Lagotto Romagnolo – Multi Ch Kan Trace Emit Remmus, Pointer – Sh Ch Sharnphilly Boondoggle JW, Curly Coated Retriever – Sh Ch Ravenho Up Town Girl For Brightmeadow JW , Clumber Spaniel – Sh Ch Vanitonia Secret Episode, Sussex Spaniel – Sh Ch Eald Dances With Wolves Among Nyliram JW, Spanish Water Dog – Sh Ch Zorrazo Hey There Yogi Bear, Weimaraner – Gunalt The Hangover JW. Unfortunately, with many others worthy of being shortlisted, having to be left out today.

Group1 – Sh Ch Sharnphilly Boondoggle JW – Pointer

The beautiful flowing and curvy lines of this 6 year old black & white Pointer dog gives him a typical and shapely silhouette when stood. One part smoothly flowing into the next. He is so clean and sound throughout, coupled with his regal poise and showmanship, made him stand out on the move. His footfall is precise and shows a lovely driving action from behind with a lashing bee sting tail. Delighted to be able to watch him in the BIS line up, going onto win ‘RBIS’ – Many congratulations

Group 2 – Sh Ch Riverbrue Morning Glory – Irish Setter

Super quality and stylish 4 year old Irish Setter dog, who looked a picture when stood. He has substance and strength but still retains the desired racy quality. Masculine head, with a most appealing head and expression, lovely depth through the body and the right amount of bone. His body lines are graceful, and he has a natural presence. Loving the big ring to show off his free and positive movement with a ground covering action and head held high

Group 3 – Sh Ch Vanitonia Secret Episode – Clumber Spaniel

What a little show off this clumber spaniel bitch is and quite the charmer! She is so very balanced, full of quality and breed type. Admired her ‘joie de vivre’ and love of life! Most feminine of heads, with the desired strength, nicely squared flews and heavy brow. Strong and deep in the body whilst maintaining a firm level topline, with well boned limbs. Turned out to perfection. Moved with enthusiasm and pizzazz, whilst covering the ground with positive footfall

Group 4 – Gunalt The Hangover JW – Weimaraner

At only 18 months old this Weimaraner dog, has a noble air about him and imposing stature. Thought him to be in lovely fit condition, functional and full of quality. So very balanced and smart, with unexaggerated symmetry. He combines masculine elegance with substance. His movement was so precise and effortless. Delighted to hear he was made up on the day, many congratulations
