Scottish Beagle Club Championship Show 15th June 2024
Judge Mrs J-A Samantha Goldberg
Thank you to the committee of the Scottish Beagle Club for the honour of inviting me to judge their Championship show in 2024. I was delighted with the entry and very much enjoyed the opportunity to go over your hounds. Thank you to everyone who came up to Bonny Scotland for the day.
I found the majority of hounds in good condition, although one or two could lose a few pounds! All mouths were correct and most were in full coat, the weather this year has made it harder to keep them this way so this is commendable, although some could have done with shorter nails. Temperament was excellent -both for hounds and exhibitors (!) who took my placings with good grace. I was delighted to see so many puppies entered and hope this bodes well for the future of beagles. The puppy bitch classes were especially well filled and some went cardless where I was spoiled for choice.

1 Diamond’s Kelcardi All Fired Up-this eye catching young boy moved out with confidence and ease. He has a well balanced head with a soft expression and kind eye. He has good forechest, leading to a good depth of chest for one so young. His neck flows to a well laid shoulder and he moved parallel fore and aft on well boned legs. He has a very good width of thigh and correctly low set hocks. He would benefit from losing a couple of pounds
2 Ambridge’s Julemark Chaos-this boy was harder to assess as he gave his handler a really hard time. He is very much a baby at the moment and longer cast, needing to drop in chest. Time and maturity and carrying a little more bodyweight may help the picture. Very much a confident mover and I hope his owner will be able to get the measure of him.

1 Havard & Havard’s Annavah Justify-another eye catching young dog, who moved out very steadily, parallel both ways. Shown in very fit condition, with a good reach of neck with the desired slight arch. He has a mild appealing expression with correctly low set leathers framing his head. He has correct round bone leading to short pasterns and good tight feet. Good to see a correct depth of chest below the elbow and the desired underline.
2 Taylor’s Rosanka O’Neal by Deaconfield-this boy has the softest of heads and expression and was shown in super condition. Well off for bone and a well angulated shoulder leading to a chest well ribbed back and short in loin exactly as he should be. Excellent well muscled thigh and a good size. He could swop places with 1 on another day but was a bit of a fidget today in the final decision.

1 Banks’ Forgebanks Santiano-This boy caught my eye as soon as he moved in his class. He has a masculine well balanced head with leathers which frame his head. His neck drops down into a correctly angulated, well laid shoulder and he has a good rib cage extending back. He holds his topline well on the move with a correct tailset and good “bum” behind the tail leading to well angulated hind legs. He has very good well arched feet. He pulled out the stops in the final run around and I was pleased to award him the RDCC
2 Binks’ Tannahill Ezra-a puppy who was not the most cooperative on the move in his class. He has a good reach of neck leading into a well laid shoulder and running to a level topline with correct tailset. He has good angulation fore and aft and well let down hocks with nice tight feet. I had three promising puppies for BPD and this one caught my eye for the award
3 Lewis’ Fallowfield Romeo
ND (2,0)
1 Coates’ Gladstyle Born Ready-a dark tricolour with a rich tan who held his topline well on the move. His head needs time as he could do with more stop. Very much a baby who won this class as he showed his attributes off better than my 2nd place.
2 Ambridge’s Julemark Chaos-see MPD

1 Banks’ Forgebanks Santiano -see JD
2 McEwan’s Janfrey Valentino-a dog with a very pleasing head and soft expression. He has a well laid shoulder, correct depth of chest below the elbow and very well muscled thigh. A good topline and tailset and well handled to show his good profile. I would like to see him move with more enthusiasm as his outline suggests he can.
PGD (3,1)
1 Hardisty’s Blunderhall Jacks the Lad JW-this boy is definitely compact. He has a soft expression with well formed low set leathers framing his head slightly domed skull. His topline is held level on the move and he has plenty of depth of chest between forelegs of good round bone. His tail is carried correctly.
2 McEwan’s Janfrey Valentino-see GD
LD (5,2)
1 Parker & Stevens’ Serenaker Saltydog-this dog is up to height but well balanced. He has a very soft expression and correctly proportioned head, low set leathers and just a little arch of neck behind the skull. He has a super length of neck leading into a good short backed level topline, and he moved parallel both ways driving with his well muscled thigh above low set hocks. As he matures further he will trouble the best.
2 Lewis’ Fallowfield Fellman -this dog came a very close second to my 1st place with . He moved out well and although longer cast has a good depth of chest and great forechest. He has a soft expression but masculine with correctly proportioned skull and framed by lovely leathers. He holds his topline well on the move and covered the ground
3 McEwan’s Janfrey Valentino-see GD

1 Parker & Stevens’ Ch. Serenaker Armani-well what a super head and soft melting expression, with a dark eye and kind look. He was shown with an excellent coat and perfect for weight and condition. He strode around the ring with drive and purpose powered by super quarters, moving parallel both ways and kept a perfect level topline all the way. Very pleased to award him the DCC and splitting hairs for BOB
2 Taylor & Taylor’s Deaconfield Kingcraft-I have judged this boy before and still admire him. He also has a soft expression with a clean head which has not coarsened at all with age. He has an outline which is still correct in all ways, no thickening or coarsening. Good forechest and underline, correct shoulders and good topline. Lost out a little to 1st on muscling of his hind quarters and in between winter and summer coat. In the run off for the RCC I was splitting hairs
3 Binks’ Tannahill Vagabond
VD (3,0)
1 Dawson & Goodhall’s Ch Janfrey Randal upon Rundle-a dog I judged previously when he was younger. He can still cover the ground with little effort and moves out with great drive in profile. A clean head and expression leading into a reachy neck and good shoulders. He is still carrying good muscle for his 11 years and pipped the younger veteran to 1st. In the final challenge for BVIB had to give way to the bitch who was on top form
2 Hunt & Norris’ Ch Shercroft Apollo JW ShCM-this old chap is shorter than 1st but carrying a little weight over his shoulders. He is a very masculine compact dog who moves out with good drive for nearly 10 years. He has a nicely arched neck and good depth of chest and strides out well in front. A very worthy veteran Champion and good to see my first two dogs today.
3 English’s Gempeni Paso
MPB (9,1)
1 Diamond’s Kelcardi Playing with Fire-I would have happily popped this puppy in my car to go home! She caught my attention as soon as she came into the ring, strode out with a super outline, with drive and ease. Going over her was just as pleasing, a feminine clean head with a melting expression, low set leathers framing her head and leading to a correct length of neck. Shoulders well angulated and rib cage well ribbed back to a short loin. She holds her topline on the move and drove around the ring using well muscled hind legs. Neat feet on legs with round bone and well let down hocks. BPB and BPIB
2 Havard & Havard’s Annavah Chantilly Cream-a very pretty headed bitch with a mild appealing expression. A clean head and reachy neck leading to a well laid shoulder. And good forechest. Nice depth and length of rib cage and well muscled thigh. Lost out today as rather unsettled on the move and showing her immaturity.
3 Parker & Stevens’ Serenaker Liberty Belle
PB (6,0)
1 Taylor’s Rosanka Harlow by Deaconfield-a striking tan and white puppy who moved the steadiest in this class. A feminine expression with a clean head and good pigmentation. Lovely neck with the desired arch and leading to well laid shoulders. She moved out with a level topline, correct tailset on good tight feet. A well balanced bitch with good angulation fore and aft and good depth of chest. I am sure she has a bright future.
2 Lewis’ Velenco True Love for Fallowfield-this open tri was close up to 1st but a little unsettled today when she moved. She is very much the type I enjoy watching and up close she has a soft expression and pretty head, lovely neck and shoulder with a super rib cage and short loin. Excellent quarters and my notes say could move all day!
3 Havard & Havard’s Annavah Teardrop
JB (5,0)
1 Hardisty’s Blunderhall Saucy Sally-a well balanced head with good leathers, very good pigmentation and dark eye. A compact beagle with a very level topline in outline and on the move with correct round bone and tight feet. Very well angulated behind and a nice “bum” behind her tail. She is balanced with a good forechest, and depth of rib cage. Very well muscled although could lose a couple of pounds to advantage.
2 Banks’ Forgebanks Shantung-a pleasing balanced head and good pigment with dark eye. Well angulated both ways and used her excellent quarters to move out well in profile. Good reachy neck and shoulder and held her topline well on the move. She was close up to one although moving a little close behind on the day and felt she had a little more to give
3 Tofts’ Jarrowley Opal-just a note that she had a lovely head and expression
NB (3,1)
1 Kingsland’s Brimbleway Galaxy Bar for Redcap-only a puppy and unplaced in a competitive puppy class. She is a little legs and wings at the moment being bum high and a little long, also needing her head to alter hopefully with maturity. Well muscled and good round bone and won the class with a better underline and shorter than 2nd
2 Dawson & Goodall’s Rundle Lovelace -a feminne head with good pigment and eye colour. Long reachy neck and well laid shoulder. Moved out well in profile and very well muscled and well angulated in rear giving her drive on the go around. Longer cast than one and a tad long in loin.

2 Banks’ Forgebanks Shantung-see JB
3 Langman’s Madika High Flyer at Bonwillan
PGB (4,0)
1 Parker & Stevens’ Serenaker Manhattan-very pretty tan and white bitch with a feminine head framed by good leathers. Short and compact with a well laid shoulder and good length of rib cage and short loin. She was the most correct mover in the class, balanced both ways and held her topline well. I would like to see her with a little more condition on to complete the picture and I am sure maturity will enhance her
2 Tanner’s Felinoak El Koko Loko-a longer cast bitch than 1st but moved out very well in profile and in super condition, fit and well conditioned. She has a well balanced head and a good arch of neck to a well laid shoulder. Excellent quarters and correct tail set on the move.
3 Kilgour’s Kelcardi Claudia-my notes say would benefit from losing a bit of weight
LB (9,2)
1 Davies’ Annavah Nocturne at Barrvale-very well presented and foot perfect on the move. She has a soft expression and reachy well arched neck leading to a well angulated shoulder. Good angulation behind and well muscled quarters drove her around the ring. In the final run off she had to give way to her cousin
2 Kingsland & Stevens’ Redcap the Loco Motion with Talbotrise-a lovely profile mover with an excellent rib cage, topline and tailset. A feminine head and very good pigment. Reachy neck leading to a correct well angulated shoulder. Excellent thigh with a nice “bum” behind the tail. Very close up to my 1st but not quite as settled behind today. The mats were a little slippy so could swop places another day
3 Hunt’s Dufosee Iyla at Bondlea
OB (5,0)
What a super class of lovely bitches. It was hard to split them and they really were judged on the day. I could have given out more than one 1st! It was a pleasure to judge them.
1 Havard & Havard’s Ch Annavah Princess Tiana-on the first move around she was effortless and today headed a class full of excellent bitches. She has a soft feminine expression with dark eye and low set leathers framing her head. A very laid shoulder, excellent rib and level topline with short couplings leading to a correct tail set. She moved parallel both ways on lovely tight feet. Super muscled hind quarters and never flagged today. She could definitely have come home in my car and I was delighted to give her the CC and BOB today
2 Tanner’s Ch Felinoak Fansi Nansi JW-Another I could take home! She is longer cast than 1st but also a super mover, drawing the eye as she drove around the ring. A pretty head, with super leathers and very good reachy neck leading to a well angulated shoulder and very correct rib cage. Excellent quarters and tail set and well let down hocks she certainly is fit for function. RCC and a worthy Champion
3 Deans’ Ch Gempeni Cornflower ShCEx-my notes say a very appealing head and expression
VB (7,1)
1 Parker & Stevens’ Ch Serenaker Elle’s Belles-this senior girl has a really appealing head, soft expression, neat flews framed by lovely leathers. She is compact and in super condition looking younger than her years. She moved out parallel both ways and held her topline and tailset perfectly on the move. BVB Today she pipped the veteran dog to get BVIB
2 Cuthill’s Detrick Firefly over Divinebrae-a very sound, happy girl with a pretty head and also compact and well ribbed back. A very good length of neck and well angulated shoulders flowing to a correct topline and tailset. Well muscled behind and in excellent condition.
3 Arden’s Madika Spot on JW ShCM AW (P) VW
