Breed: Sealyham Terrier

It is always a pleasure to judge this special breed and I had been looking forward to it for some time. I must admit I was more than delighted and excited by such a marvellous Sealyham entry of 53. Thank you very much. I find it hard to understand why some of our wonderful native breeds are not so popular as others, therefore a good number and more so some well filled quality puppy and junior classes, really augers well. Puppy bitch was like the good old days! I had some quality dogs and there were no recurring faults. Mouths all perfect as one would expect. A lovely day.

A nice class to start the day with. 1. Ornella King Midas. This is a smart young male who I think will do very well. He instantly appealed for his overall shape and silhouette. On further examination he has a very pleasing head and expression with a good width to the skull and a good strong punishing jaw. Good dark eye and nicely placed ears of good size completed his expression. Decent length of neck into good shoulders. Nicely made front and well off for bone. Still needs to drop and mature through. Good length and strong loin. Nice hindquarters. Moved very well. In A1 condition. RCC in good company. I wish him well.

2. Ladeler Dilwyn Garth. Nice young dog and a substantial but not oversized male. He has a good quality head and expression. Good neck of nice length into well laid shoulder placement. Good front. Enough bone and good feet. Well ribbed up and well angulated behind and powerful backend. Just needs to get used to his job and use his tail more. A coat strip might do him some favours.

I didn’t think when I arrived that the junior dog class would be where I found both my principal winners in males, but it turned out to be a super class.

1 Whooperhill Sandman NLJCh B/White. Lovely young quality male who appealed instantly for his overall size and shape. He certainly portrayed the standard requirements of sturdy and game. This is a decent sized quality dog who would not be mistaken for a bitch but is in no way overdone. Quality head of good width and clean cheeks. Head proportions are correct, and he has a good eye and ear to complete a nice expression. Good neck and shoulder. Well let down in chest which is of correct length. Correct bone. Of correct overall proportions with good length and the best of toplines. Good tail set and plenty behind the tail. In good harsh coat and well muscled up. Moved very well fore and aft. Later in the morning he easily annexed the CC in a good line up and later BOB. I was pleased to find out that this award gave him is crown. Congratulations.

2. Ornella King Midas. Winner of Puppy Dog.

3. Dinglebrooke I Can. Completed a trio of nice young males.

1. Jolihem Mad Eye Moody. B/W who appealed for his overall shape. Pleasing head of good quality and with a nice expression. Good neck and well-placed shoulder. Nicely made front and ok for bone. Would prefer a little more of him overall, being a fraction narrow through for me. Nice tight foot. Level topline although for me a fraction long in loin. Nice hindquarters. Tail on top. Moved ok. In good harsh coat.

2. Nunneley Hide and Seek at Slifehurst. Nice male who appealed for his size and substance. Nice head and expression. Good front assembly and well let down chest of correct width. Well ribbed up. Loses a fraction in topline. Nicely angulated with well let down hock. Moved very well in both directions. Out of jacket today but I could feel enough to see he has a decent topcoat.

3. Lushell Gwyn Cariad

1. Rowanrae Dream Come True. B/W of nice type. Lovely overall proprtions. Nice head and expression. Super neck and shoulder. Good front. Well ribbed up. Lovely hind angulation and well let down hock. Correct topline on examination and stood, however today just very slightly roaches this on the move which is distracting. In excellent jacket and super condition.

2. Jolihem Lene Joe Badger. Nicely put down dog of good proportions. Not quite the head of the first placed dog and could benefit from a fraction more strength in muzzle. Good bone and feet. Nice topline. Good tail set and in lovely jacket. Moved well. Would prefer a fraction more neck to complete the picture.

1. Ch Nileda Our Mutual Friend. Substantial male with lots to like about him and he richly deserves his title. He is a quality male with a pleasing head and expression. He is lovely to go over and in such sold condition which pleased me. Good front assembly and nice depth to his chest. Well ribbed up and with muscular loin. Level topline and well-set tail. Super backend and correctly angulated. He is a very nice male. Could have put a fraction more in during the challenge for higher honours and today had to make way for the youngsters. Would prefer a fraction less furnishing.

2. Nileda Mister Joe. Another pleasing specimen. Of excellent type. Quality head. Good neck and shoulder. Nicely made front. Of good overall proportions. Level topline and well set tail, although his tail is not his greatest fortune. Nice back end. Moved well. Would just prefer a little more of him which is where 1 had the edge today.

1. Dinglebrooke I Can. 15 month old. He is indeed a very nice Sealyham male. Very nice for overall. Good head and expression which is very typical. Would prefer a fraction more neck. Nice bone and feet. Well ribbed up and short strong loin. Tail well set. Well angulated hind quarters. Decent rump. Moved well. Apart from a bit more neck my notes say ‘not much to dislike’. I wish him well.

What a super class to judge. 8 with 7 present and all high quality. The first three being out of the top draw.

1.Magembay Monnet. Immediately took my eye, and my eye was drawn back to this young bitch repeatedly. I really loved her. Very typical head and expression, skull of good width and very slightly domed. Clean through. Correct length of muzzle without loss of strength. Lovely dark eye and rims nicely pigmented at this age. Well carried ear of correct size. Good length of neck into very nice shoulder placement. Well let down in chest. Of good overall length with level topline. Lovely backend of strength and well-muscled. Hocks well let down. Moved very well retaining her topline. Her owner needs to slightly refine her trim and then she will really be one to watch.

2. Whooperhill Song. This is another lovely young bitch. Many of the comments on 1 would also apply here. Lovely head and expression with good head proportions. Nicely made throughout with good neck and shoulder, nice front assembly. Good strong bone and decent feet. Nice topline and plenty behind the tail. Moved well. Just not as finished as the first placed bitch. Should do well. 3. Whooperhill Serendipity For Letara. Litter sister to 2 and also very nice. She completed a trio of quality youngsters. Would have pushed 1 and 2 harder if she wasn’t so out of jacket.

1 Love me Tender of Taita's Ushabti with Thornberryhall. Young bitch who instantly appealed for her overall type and beautiful head and expression. She has the loveliest feminine head, yet without any loss of strength. She has such a punishing square jaw for a bitch which is powerful and long. Super dark eye and dark rims. Good length of neck into well placed shoulders. Nice front and the best of bone and feet. Of decent length overall and well ribbed up. Decent tail set. This bitch gave me a real dilemma today. Firstly she was hotly challenged by a super puppy who pushed her very hard. Secondly her handler tended to stretch her out a fraction much, and at 6 months of age her topline needs to muscle up, so from initial inspections she looks as though she dips at the whither. On examination she does not. However, the real proof is in moving and she moves with a perfect topline pulling herself together, and moving with perfect footfall. Side gait is a joy to watch. She won on her overall exquisite type. Later in the challenge CC despite her immaturity.

2. Magembay Monnet. Winner of PB.

3. JOLIHEM LOONY LUNA

1.Rowanrae Dream Weaver. Not a small bitch but otherwise quite lovely. Of excellent breed type and her silhouette is very nice and exhibits her correct proportions. Lovely head and expression. Nice to go over with everything in the right place. This bitch probably had the best Sealyham jacket of the day and congratulations to the owner for keeping her in such excellent condition. Unfortunately she was a little sluggish and uninterested on the move which cost her higher honours.

1. Kenaiteen Cascade. Good bitch of good type. Pleasing head and expression. Good neck. A fraction wide in front but of good depth of chest. Nice bone and feet. Could be a fraction better in shoulder. Well ribbed up. Good level topline. Lovely hindquarters and well muscled up. Moved well with good drive. In nice Jacket.

This was a challenging class today. Three bitches all of differing type.

1. Ch Multi Ch Whooperhill So Charming. RCC

2. Ch Nunneley Hopscotch Over Ornella JW

Both these bitches are of good quality, and both deserve their crowns in my opinion. I could happily award them both high honours. Both exhibit an overall shape which is very typical for a Sealyham and both while retaining strength are indeed feminine. They are both lovely to go over and are well made through. Hopscotch appeals better for her overall size to me, however she is just fraction more pronounced in the cheek than 1 and could have a fraction more behind the tail. So Charming scored in her head which is a fraction cleaner through, although she could have benefitted from a better jacket today.

3. Bullbrit Shady Lady of Nunneley. Completed a trio of good bitches.

1. Ch Nileda Great Expectations Sh.CM: At nine and a half the owner has to be commended for her excellent condition. A quality bitch of super type. Pleasing head and expression. Good overall shape and size. Lovely neck and shoulder. Good front, maybe a fraction wide but I forgave this older lady this fault. Well ribbed up. Wonderful topline for this age. Moved very well.
