MIDLANDS & NORTHERN RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK CLUB
60th Anniversary Championship Show
21st July 2024
Judge: Helen Mansfield (Shingwidsi)
The invite to judge the M&NRRC Anniversary Show originally arrived in 2019, and I can’t thank the committee enough for the great honour of judging at this special Championship show. As most know, I have been associated with the Club for a long time so it was a dream come true to have this amazing opportunity.
My sincere thanks to the exhibitors for giving me an entry of 144 Ridgebacks to judge. It was a privilege to go over so many beautiful hounds, all who had some virtues to be admired. I have to admit I am now a convert to the overseas grading systems, as it gives all exhibitors a record of how highly a judge has rated their dogs. In both sexes there are many excellent breed examples, and on the day I found my Best In Show in a gorgeous young male who filled the eye and gave his all.
General observations: All ridges and mouths were acceptable so I have not commented individually. Temperaments were excellent, with just a couple of males being on their toes. I was surprised that in many, basic presentation was lacking; with soft muscles, dirty coats and teeth, and poor feet and long toenails. Eye shape and set varies greatly and some give a very untypical expression, which is not pleasing.
I was glad to see there are fewer over pronounced prosterna, and fronts generally have improved greatly. However, rear assembly is something that I think we should all be mindful of. I will happily forgive high tail carriage, especially on young males, but we seem to have several Ridgebacks who are carrying sickle tails from the root, often coming from poor tail insertion with incorrectly set croups. Weakness through the rear is something that should improve with age, but even if weak it should not impede the swing phase of movement, but unfortunately some displayed a cycling motion, which is not conducive to low effortless movement and is often coupled with high set hocks and weak tendons. In some later classes, especially in the males, several hounds were not sound, which did cost them places.
Finally, thank you to my wonderful efficient stewards, Toni and Pippa. It was a joy to be in the ring with you both.

1st Priorpark’s Par The Course (Miss H Parsons)
Lovely balanced boy of beautiful type at 8mths old, showing so much promise. Head of good proportions, with good skull shape and well set ears. Super neck, leading cleanly to excellent topline and nicely off the croup to correct tail carriage. Correct front with excellent fore chest for age and good depth, nicely boned and standing on correct feet. Good ribbing, strong through the loin and well let down hocks with developing second thigh. Moved away and back with good footfall, showing convergence and correct fluid side gait. Handled sympathetically and presented in excellent condition. BPD, BMP, BPIS
2nd Priorpark William Wallace for Clanbruachan (Mrs N Jolly)
A sweet boy who had a most pleasing expression and was desperate to please his handler but he was just a little giddy with the surroundings. Litter brother to first, with many of the same qualities. Lovely male head, with good depth of muzzle and developing nicely. Good front assembly, well boned, with excellent feet. Good topline and underline. Not so balanced in the rear at the moment but will even out as he has correct angulation and lovely well let down hocks. Moved out nicely when he settled.
3rd Kazembe Counter Strike (Mrs Tl Demain)
Very nice type, understandably raw but on track for age and style.
PD (4, 2)
1st Sigurd Auksinis Feniksas (Imp Ltu) (Mrs M Jeffrey)
At 9mths old, a slower maturing stamp so not fully tightened up and standing a little bum high but I really liked his overall shape. Gentle male head of good width and depth, correct ears and set. Super neck, leading cleanly onto the withers, good fore chest and front angulation, nicely boned, correct pasterns and feet. Tight elbows, good underline and nice through the loin. Good width to thighs and well let down hocks. Developing a nice long easy stride and giving the impression he will be able to trot for miles when fully mature. Will watch him with interest.
2nd Vkloof Duke Lambo Galardo (Mr A Zhao)
Presented a handsome picture on the stack and shown in hard condition at nearly 12mths old. Nicely proportioned head sat on a good length of neck, balanced angulation, nice depth to body for age, well ribbed and maintained his topline. Correct feet. Lovely turn of stifle and correct hocks. Moved true but had a tendency to sidewind when lead held too tight.
JD (8,3)
1st Delianza What’s Your Motive (Mrs K L Barker)
This boy caught my eye from the start and he never disappointed. On the move he was foot perfect, straight and true, showing good reach and drive, with a low effortless gait and correct convergence. His body dropped into the stride, maintaining correct head carriage, excellent reach of a strong neck, with excellent topline and not faltering over the loin, coming cleanly off the croup, enabling correct tail carriage. Creating that beautiful image of a hound that could go all day. Excellent kind expression coming from a maturing masculine head of correct proportions, correct round eye, flat skull with good ear set. Correct width to the body, lovely fore chest, close elbows, good lay of shoulder, clean at the withers, excellent ribbing with good underline, nicely boned, with excellent pasterns and feet. Correct rear angulation, with good turn of stifle and nicely developed first and second thigh, well let down hocks with strong rear pasterns. He conveys the correct mix of strength and athleticism, enhanced by being shown in excellent condition. The eye flows over him; nothing exaggerated or over done. I was delighted to award him BJ, DCC, BIS.
2nd Sofala Raffaello (Mrs N D Raymond)
Another quality male I really liked; a very true type with no exaggerations. Super head of correct proportions and planes, kind dark round eye, good ear set and carriage. Good length of neck, developing fore chest, close elbows and nice lay of shoulder enabling good reach on the move. Nicely boned, correct spring to pasterns, standing of good feet. Ribbed well back, giving good length and correct strength to the body, pleasing over the loin to croup, with good tail carriage. Correct turn of stifle and good width to thigh, developing nicely through the rear quarters with strong well let down hocks. Moved with effortless drive and good footfall away and back, maintaining his topline. Pushed hard for the RCC and I’m sure his time will come.

Several boys were making their handlers work hard to achieve stands or straight movement.

Handsome male, who still needs to develop and strengthen fully but showing a very balanced outline without exaggeration. Pleasing head piece of nice proportions and kind expression coming from correct dark round eye, well set ears framing the head. LD (13,1)
The first three are of a similar type, and came to the fore with a correct easy stride showing the desired reach and drive with precise footfall. I’m sure they will change places many times in the coming years.

Beautiful shape to this handsome male, who is made correctly, so he moves true to the breed requirements. I have done him well previously, and all that I said then still applies, but I just felt he was not on top form today.
