THE BEAGLE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW
30/8/24
I would like to thank The Beagle Club committee for the invitation to judge their second Championship show of the year held in conjunction with City of Birmingham. Thank you also to the exhibitors who entered their beagles and gave me such a fantastic entry of 126/142 which was full of quality. Judging followed the CoB judging in the same ring and as I didn’t get in the ring until 1.40pm an early finish wasn’t on the cards! Part way into the bitch judging I was informed that the gates would be locked at 7pm so in order to save some time and to avoid exhibitors being locked in I had to omit the run round the ring together at the start in the remainder of the bitch classes. Judging such a high entry in a short space of time was a challenge but I managed to finish judging at 6.30pm by which time an extra hour had been negotiated and everyone had plenty time to leave. Lastly a big thank you to my two very efficient stewards who’s expertise enabled me to finish judging on time.
BABY PUPPY DOG (3, 1 abs)
1. Murphy’s Bayard Seal Of Approval at Rhosyndu. A very promising nearly 6 months blanket tri. Well balanced with a good forechest and hind angulation, he has a good length of neck and level topline. Well boned legs down to compact feet, strides out well on the move, just a touch close behind.
2. Coates’ Gladstyle Stone Mason, another promising tri baby with a good reach of neck, long ears, a month younger than 1 so naturally still to develop. Longer in body than 1. Already showing very well, with very sound movement up and down and excellent in profile.
MINOR PUPPY DOG (4)
1. Tanner’s Felinoak Griffyn (ai), nearly 9 months tri who is well grown for age. Pleasing masculine head with soft expression, long correctly set ears. Very well boned legs, well made body with plenty of substance, strong, angulated hindquarters, long neck, moved very soundly with reach and drive holding a level topline. Close decision for BPD.
2. Jones & Jepson’s Eardley Trot On, a most attractive tri born on the same day as 1. More compact and of a smaller mould, he has a pleasing head with dark eyes giving a gentle expression, good bone and hind angulation, level topline, movement parallel, close decision with 1.
3. Beard’s Kellitcreed Peaky Blinder
PUPPY DOG (9)
1. Diamond & Carruthers’ Kelcardi All Fired Up, a most appealing 10 months tri of a lovely type and look of quality. He is well grown and carrying plenty of substance, excellent front and rear angulation, straight front, very well boned, pleasing head which is developing nicely, dark eyes, long ears set on low, reachy neck into level topline. Moving away and back he is foot perfect and has super reach and drive in profile. He could just lose a little weight to advantage. BPD.
2. Jones & Jepson’s Eardley Party Boy, very promising 7 months dark tri in a smaller mould to 1, compactly built, well boned straight front, tight, compact feet, a most pleasing head and expression from dark eyes, very sound on the move.
3. Taylor’s Rosanka O’Neal by Deaconfield
JUNIOR DOG (4)
1. Havard’s Annavah Justify, 12 months broken tri who is maturing nicely. Lots to like, I found this boy to be very well balanced with a lovely outline stacked, pleasing masculine head with dark eyes, long ears, straight front, compact feet, round bone, good reach of neck, his movement was sound with excellent reach and drive in profile. Strongly considered for the RCC.
2. Banks’ Forgebanks Santiano, 17 months t/w I have admired from the ringside. He has lots to like including well boned straight front, good reach of neck into well laid shoulders, well angulated front and rear, excellent on the move. Head just a little heavier than I prefer but still a super quality boy.
3. Fellows’ Rosanka Bridges
YEARLING DOG (7, 2 abs)
1. Goldberg’s Molesend Giorgio, 19 months faded tri, up to size but well balanced with a good forechest and well bent stifles, straight front, strong bone, long neck into level topline, pleasing head and long ears. Very sound on the move front and behind and moved freely with excellent reach and drive in profile.
2. Cornell’s Braveair Pawsforthought from Bronllys, 12 months compactly built tri, different type to 1, he is well balanced with good bone and straight front down to good feet. Pleasing head with dark eyes, stifles nicely angulated, moved well.
3. Wigstead’s Lilleagle Jeremy Fisher with Bellenza
NOVICE DOG (7, 1 abs)
1. Felinoak Griffyn, 1st in MPD
2. Giles-Wyatt’s Clarismore Crown Prince, unplaced in the large quality PD class, this compact 10 months tri is well balanced with good forechest, straight front and level topline and has a pleasing head, moved well to take 2nd here.
3. Lilleagle Jeremy Fisher with Bellenza
GRADUATE DOG (2, 1 abs)
1. Braveair Pawsforthought from Bronllys, 2nd in YD
POST GRADUATE DOG (4, 1 abs)
1. Hardisty’s Blunderhall Jacks The Lad, smaller type, this smart 21 months tri is very balanced with good forechest and depth of chest complimented by good angulation in rear quarters. Pleasing male head, straight front down to neat, compact feet and has a level topline. His movement was very sound front and back and he moved with reach and drive in profile.
2. Bell-Thomas’ Amorpapaver Hercules, 4 years broken tri out of a larger mould. Stronger in head but has a gentle expression. He has a good bend of stifle and moved very soundly.
3. Timmins’ Timollymae Ace
MID LIMIT DOG (4)
1. Leader’s Molesend Dice JW, pleasing 3 year old t/w that is very well boned with very good feet. Well balanced construction with good forechest and depth of chest and rear angulation, level topline with good tailset and carriage. Well proportioned, masculine head. Very sound on the move.
2. Simkin’s Simeldaka Senglea Squire, 4 year old tri of a different type to 1 who has a masculine head and pleasing expression. He has a nice outline stacked with a good length of neck into level topline, depth of chest and bend of stifle.
3. Phillips’ Lanesend Redcap Bushranger
LIMIT DOG (8, 2 abs)
1. Parker & Stevens’ Serenaker Saltydog, 2 year old attractively marked broken tri who has the most lovely head and soft expression from dark eyes enhanced by long, low set ears. Long neck into level topline and well set on stern which is carried perfectly on the move. He has very good bone and feet. He showed very well free standing. For perfection I would like more angulation in front and rear to give a more pleasing overall picture stacked but I could watch him move all day. Absolutely sound both ways and with super effortless reach and drive in profile.
2. Jones’ Clairdale Fusilier, this well-constructed 2 year old tri was very good to go over on the table. He has a lovely male head and soft expression, is well off for bone with very good feet, a straight front and good depth of chest. His topline is level with well set stern. I feel he could have a little more rear angulation but overall he is a lovely quality dog with a lot to like. Although he moved very well he couldn’t quite match the reach and drive of 1 who he was unlucky to meet today.
3. Jones & Jepson’s Eardley Ready For Anything
OPEN DOG (7, 2 abs)
A lovely class of quality dogs.
1. Parker & Stevens’ Ch Serenaker Armani, this 4 year old tri demanded attention. He has the loveliest of heads and a melting expression from dark eyes, his ears are of good length and perfectly set. He is a lovely size with plenty bone right down to his tight feet. His front is straight and topline level. He can sometimes get too over excited but today he was calm and collected moving round the ring and so sound away and back. Ideally he could have more forechest and angulation in front to match his excellent hindquarters but his many other qualities outweighed this and I was very pleased to award him the CC and ultimately BIS. I heard afterwards he had won HG1 at the City of Birmingham show. Congratulations to his owners on a super day.
2. Taylor’s Deaconfield Kingcraft, a faded tri who is a few weeks short of his 7th birthday but can still hold his own in OD. Not flashy but is well balanced, compactly built and a nice size, he has a lovely head and soft expression, long neck into well laid shoulders and level topline, good bone and feet, deep chest, excellent forechest with forelegs well under body. A bit of a fidget at times when stacked but very good on the move being sound both ways and has reach and drive in profile. A quality boy, both he and Armani sired by the lovely Ch Davricard Harrison. Pleased to award him the RCC in very good company.
3. Laughton’s Brimbleway Saving Grace
VETERAN DOG (4, 1 abs)
1. Jones’ Ch Newlin Preston to Clairdale JW, a 7 year old tri in super condition. Really nice head with a lovely soft expression, well set ears, long neck into well laid shoulders, perfectly straight topline and well set and carried stern. Well boned with tight feet, deep chest below elbow, stifles well bent. For me could be a touch shorter in body and a fraction longer in leg but he is a worthy champion who moved and showed very well to win the class and BVD. Well done also winning HVG2 at City of Birmingham show.
2. Wright & Mitchell’s Huntshill Tornado JW ShCM, pleasing tri, nearly 8 years, nice head of good proportions, not overdone, dark eyes, good bone, balanced front and rear angulation, moved well.
3. Murphy’s Black Royal at Rhosyndu VW
VINTAGE DOG (3, 1 abs)
Two lovely oldies
1. Dawson & Goodall’s Ch Janfrey Randal upon Rundle JW ShCM VW, 11 years young, this tri is an old favourite, most lovely head and soft expression, ears of good length set low, long neck into well laid shoulders and level topline, plenty bone and well angulated hindquarters. Moves round the ring with super reach and drive, close decision for BVD.
2. Phillips & Keytes’ Lanesend Segenhoe JW ShCM, broken tri, also 11 years. Different type to 1 being out of a smaller more compact mould. Gorgeous head with dark eyes and melting expression. He was in great condition and perfectly balanced stacked with excellent body proportions. I liked him a lot and it was a close decision. Moved with excellent reach and drive, just not quite as steady as 1.
BABY PUPPY BITCH (4)
Four lovely babies, wish I could have given all 1st places.
1. Goldberg’s Molesend Jazzy, gorgeous 4 months l/w baby I could have taken home. Developing well with lovely overall balance. Sweet head and melting expression, long ears set low, straight front and neat compact feet, a touch close behind at the moment but moved out so well in profile. I’m sure she has a good future ahead of her. Delighted to award her BBPIS.

She too has a lovely balanced outline stacked, is well angulated, has a level topline, well laid shoulders, good bone and is very good on the move. It was a close decision, just preferred the head of 1 today.

OPEN BITCH (9, 3 abs)
A lovely class of quality bitches, I was spoilt for choice.
1. Davies’ Annavah Nocturne at Barrvale, I have admired this eye-catching 2 year old tri from the ringside and was pleased to have the opportunity to judge her. She is so well put together from her long neck, well laid shoulders, good depth of chest and angulation in hindquarters, straight front and compact feet. I liked her size and found her to be perfectly balanced overall with a nice length of leg. She has a lovely feminine head with dark eyes giving a soft melting expression and ears of good length which are set low. VETERAN BITCH (6, 3 abs)
1. Havard’s Ch Annavah Knick Knack, I last judged this beautiful 9 year old tri at LKA 2017 when she won her 2nd CC. She has faded in colour but not in quality. She has the loveliest of heads and softest of expressions from her dark eyes. Long neck into well laid shoulders and level topline, strong bone and good feet, straight front, well bent stifles, she still moves as well as ever front and back and with an easy free stride in profile. So pleased to judge her again and award her BVB & BVIS.
