SOUTHERN ENGLISH SETTER SOCIETY - 17 NOVEMBER 2024

I would like to thank the SESS committee for the kind invitation to judge bitches at their Championship Show, for the excellent lunch and gifts, to my stewards Kassia and Zoe for keeping the ring running smoothly and also to the exhibitors for entering their beautiful dogs, I was so pleased to have such a quality line up of bitches in the CC challenge. I was in agreement with my co-judge, Ann Derry, that her best dog, Sh Ch Wansleydale Maybee JW should be awarded BIS, my best bitch Sh Ch Gemsett Ice Cold In Alex At Mariglen JW awarded RBIS and BOS, my veteran bitch, Sh Ch Tattersett Dark Honey JW awarded BVIS and the dog puppy, Oshowa Dream Lover, BPIS.

MPB. (4).

1.Tompsett’s Radbrooks Walk Of Life, 8 month old b/b with everything just as it should be at this stage. She is very feminine with a pleasing head, dark eye and soft gentle expression. Sound in construction with a good reach of neck flowing into well placed shoulders, is deep in chest with well sprung ribs for age, has balanced angulation front and rear, good bone and tight feet. Well presented with coat coming and moved with confidence for one so young, BPB.

2. Welburn’s Oshowa Just A Dream, 8 month old b/b, pleasing head with dark eye, well defined stop, low set ears and correct dentition. She has a good length to neck, clean shoulders, level topline, has a good bend of stifle and tail action. Just needs to tighten up in front which showed in her movement.

Owner needs to check forelegs when stacked.

VB. (4,1).

1. Grimsdell’s Sh Ch Tattersett Dark Honey JW, 7 year old o/b of quality who is balanced throughout, very well constructed and with her free and easy movement won her the class. She has a balanced head which is long and lean with plenty of chiselling, darkest of eyes and kind expression. Long neck leading to well laid shoulder and good length of upper arm, excellent forechest with tight elbows, is deep in brisket with well-sprung ribs, and short back leading to correct tail set. Well presented in lovely condition and moved displaying super head carriage and slashing tail, BVIS.

2. Deering’s Skylark Of Rosetimber, 10 year old dark o/b with feminine well proportioned head with defined stop, dark expressive eyes and low set ears. She presents a pleasing picture in profile, is clean in throat with a good length of neck leading into well angulated shoulders, is straight in front with well sprung ribs has muscled hindquarters and stands on quality round bone and well padded feet, sound mover with plenty of drive.

3. Welburn’s Culverwell Seabreeze At Oshowa.

JB. (6). Lovely class of juniors that should have super show careers ahead.

1. Hutchinson & Dennis’s Mariglen My Heart Will Go On With Monaysbridge, 16 month old elegant b/b, she is so well balanced and constructed and together with movement won her the class and was certainly in the mix for top honours today. Classic head, lean with good chiselling, dark eye and lovely expression. She has a long slightly arched neck set into well laid-back shoulders with a good return of upper arm, excellent front assembly, is deep in chest with elbows in, ribs well sprung for age and carried back. Firm level topline with good width to hindquarters with well turned stifles and correct tailset. Beautifully presented in lovely silky coat and condition.

2. Taylor’s Wansleydale Honey Bee, nearly 15 month old b/b/t of good overall shape and size. She has a very feminine head, is balanced in skull and length of muzzle with dark eye and soft gentle expression. Long lean neck leading into well placed shoulders with good return of upper arm, straight forelegs, has depth to brisket with ribs well sprung and carried back. She has strong quarters with a good bend of stifle, good round bone and tight feet and correct tail set. Shown in excellent condition and so close between these 2 but she did not quite match the ring presence of the class winner on the day.

3. Taylor & Atyeo’s Ravensett Cappucino With Samelen.

YB. (4).

1. Allen, Bott & Morgan’s Quensha Glitter And Gold, nearly 19 month old o/b of excellent type, is balanced throughout, soundly constructed and elegant in appearance. She has a very feminine lean head which I found most appealing, is well worked with dark eyes, good shape to muzzle and depth to flew. Long slightly arched neck flowing into excellent shoulder placement with good length and return of upper arm, good forechest, is well ribbed back, short coupled and has strong quarters with well bent stifles and best of feet. Shown in lovely coat and moved out with style using her slashing tail to advantage, pleased to award her the RCC.

2. Taylor’s Wansleydale Honey Bee, (see JB above).

3. Sykes’s Sharnyx Springtime At Daraquist.

NB. (3)

1.Whiting & Grant’s Kanietter Sassy Seastar At Ormstiga, promising 13 month old b/b displaying a balanced outline when stood and maturing well. She has a long lean head with dark expressive eyes and low set ears. Good reach of neck and shoulder placement, is straight in front, has a well developed chest with good ribbing for age, firm topline and correct tail set. Moved straight with plenty of drive.

2. Rainey’s Culverwell Touch Of Fortune At Wolmersdon, 13 month old o/b looking rangy in appearance at the moment and just needs more time to fill her frame. Having said that she has a feminine, well proportioned head, good dark eye with soft expression and low set ears. Is straight in front with a long slightly arched neck, has good angulation front and rear but is longer in loin than class winner which affected overall balance, hence placings.

3. Welburn’s Oshowa Just A Dream.

GB. (4,1)

1. Taylor’s Wansleydale Honey Bee, (see JB above).

2. Lowe’s Frennisett Rhydwen, 3 year old b/b with attractive lean head, a well-defined stop, dark eye with soft expression and low set ears. Compact in outline with clean neck, a well made front assembly with elbows tucked in, good depth to body and spring of rib, stands on good bone and feet, moved steady but unfortunate to be up against a quality bitch on top form.

3. Waller’s Ennydloc Yorkshire Design.

PGB. (3).

1. Dennis, Morgan & Harris’s Mariglen Unwrapped JW, nearly 4 year old b/b/t displaying a lovely outline in profile and excellent construction. She has a very pretty head, well worked with a kind expression and low set ears. Clean neck leading into well placed shoulders with a good return of upper arm, good forechest and tight elbows, is well ribbed back with firm topline, correct tail set and has good round bone and tight feet. Free flowing movement showing good reach and drive, not in the best of coats today but still a worthy winner.

2. Deering’s Pettifox Of Rosetimber, 3 year old dark o/b compact in outline and shown with excellent muscletone, good coat and condition. She has a feminine head, dark kind eyes and low set ears. Strong arched neck with good depth to chest, well sprung ribs carried back into strong loin, is short coupled and with good tail set. Not the movement of 1st on the day.

3. Welburn’s Oshowa Dream Come True,

LB. (4).

1.Tucker’s Walshaw Centre Stage, 5 year old elegant o/b with everything in proportion, although a little out of coat today she had lots to like about her. She has a feminine well chiselled head with good balance between skull and foreface, soft expression with dark eyes. Good reach of neck into well placed shoulders, forelegs are straight with elbows in, has plenty of depth in brisket, well sprung ribcage, balanced quarters with good angulation and bend of stifle. Moved with purpose using her tail to advantage.

2. Cook’s Pernickety Quartz, 2 year old dark b/b, pleasing feminine balanced head, well defined stop with kind expressive eyes and low set ears. She has a long lean neck fitting into laid back shoulders, has good depth to chest with ribs well sprung and carried back, is short coupled, has well muscled rear quarters with good turn of stifle, good bone and tight arched feet. One to like and presented in lovely coat and condition, moved with good rear drive but just preferred the free flowing forward reach of 1st on the day.

3. Jennings-Sharman & Sharman’s Wansleydale Mayfly With Canteris.

OB. (5). What a super class full of quality.

1. Dennis, Morgan & Harris’s Sh Ch Gemsett Ice Cold In Alex At Mariglen JW, 6 year old o/b that I judged as a junior and I said then that ‘she excels in elegance and style’ and how she has developed into a quality example of an English Setter straight out of the top drawer. She has the most beautiful head, long oval skull, well chiselled, is square in muzzle with dark kind eyes. Long clean slightly arched neck leading to well placed shoulders and good length of upper arm, straight forelegs, has depth to brisket with ribs well sprung, is short coupled, muscled hindquarters with good bend of stifle, good round bone and tight feet. Presented in lovely condition, a very stylish mover with good reach and drive with super head carriage and slashing tail, pleased to award her the BCC and subsequently RBIS.

2. Wale’s Sh.Ch. Chanina Golden Rose JW, 3 year old o/b, another that I had judged previously in yearling and has progressed to be a show champion of quality. Stunningly beautiful with a really feminine expression, balanced in skull and length of muzzle, lovely chiselling, correct eye shape and low set ears. She is so well constructed with an elegant reach of neck flowing into excellent shoulder placement with good return of upper arm, has plenty of depth in brisket, well sprung ribs carried back, is short coupled with good width to quarters and correct tailset. Shown in lovely silky coat but could not match the movement of 1st on the day.

3. Sh Ch Grimsdell’s Tattersett Dark Amber.

SBB. (2).

1. Wynne-Evans Droveborough Blue Pearl, 15 month old very dark b/b with everything just as it should be at this stage. She has a feminine head of good proportions with dark expressive eyes. Good length to neck, is straight in front, has depth to chest and well ribbed for age, she is balanced throughout with good angles front and rear. Presented and moved out well but just needs to grow her coat.

2. Wynne-Evans Walshaw Let’s Dance For Droveborough, 13 month old o/b, she has a pretty feminine head with kind eye and low set ears. Clean through neck and shoulders, is deep in chest with good spring of rib for age, but needs to tighten up in front which showed in her movement. When stacked did not match the balanced outline of the class winner.
