I looked forward to my Borzoi judging appointment at Darlington with some reservation.
I have said the same previously: I was unsure of the size and quality of entry I would receive, especially bearing in mind the decline in entries over the past few years. However, I was pleased with my numerical entry and with some of the individual quality examples of the breed on display.
Unfortunately, there appears to be a lack of depth of quality or any consistent style/type in the breed varying to that which used to be prevalent in years gone by.
Certain individual dogs and bitches have some commendable attributes but there is a lack of consistency of sound conformation and necessary breed characteristics, style or type.
There are still a number of conformation points which I think should be highlighted and continue to need improvement. Upright fronts, lack of fore-chest, lack of spring of rib, flat feet, low set, large ears and overly narrow muzzle with narrowness of under jaw with pinched dentition are faults which were on show and easily spring to mind.
Feet are so important for the function of the breed and need to be considered. Long front feet which lack knuckling and short rear feet still being seen all too often.
There is still a lack of muscle tone while dirty teeth and untrimmed nails are all still to be seen; not good! especially on show dogs.
I thank all exhibitors for their support and ask that my critiques are taken as constructive criticism.
Class 1785 VD (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 4940 PINKERTON, Mrs Sue & CATTONI-SARMAN, Mrs Lynda Ch Int Ch Korsakov Radost Power Of Love Menigma Sh a striking 8-year-old mature male of pleasing appearance. He is in excellent coat, condition and presentation. Masculine, well-proportioned head of attractive shape with dark eyes and well-set ears. Balanced in angulations front and rear and having an overall profile displaying his good proportion and moderately angled hindquarters. I have previously acknowledged and rewarded his qualities but today he had to give way to the younger element. Positive on the move extension in front and good width rear action. Best Veteran in Breed and later Hound Veteran Group 3.
Class 1786 PD (4 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 4947 ROGERSON, Ms S Everwyck Alphin a 7-month-old attractive red/white youngster, he is a well boned with enough body substance needed for a developing puppy. Pleasing head which I preferred over 2nd. Very shapely in outline with great promise for onward development. Moved well enough with a typical puppy gait. Best Puppy in Breed.
2nd: 4939 ODELL, Miss Y Fedor Of The Wicklow Hunters At Sukeshi Naf another 8-month-old youngster who is well developed in bone and body. Pleasing in overall body shape and proportions. A bit plain in head; true enough in front although slightly narrow. Plenty of scope for maturity in body and hindquarters. Free and easy movement.
3rd: 4925 DOVER, Mrs Angela Marie & DOVER, MR KEITH Everwyck Golden Psammead At Keanver
Class 1787 JD (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 4937 LOGVINENKO, Dr Timothy Lynx Faster Than Light Of Noldoli (imp Swe) a 12-month-old well grown male who has a pleasing front with just enough fore-chest which I preferred to 2nd. He has a head of satisfactory shape and proportions but is plain and lacks breed characteristics at this stage in his development. Good length neck which tended to show dew-lap. Sturdy bone and body with moderate hindquarters. Pleased with his muscle tone. Moved with satisfactory side gait and true front action but close hocked behind.
2nd: 4912 BIGLAND, Mrs Sophie Rua Soleil Kurazh (imp Ita) a well-formed 13-month-old who has an attractive side profile. Attractive head which I preferred to 1st but he lacked fore-chest and was loose in front. Shapely in top-line and body but would prefer more oval cut of ribbing. Not as fit in muscle as 1st. Leggy and long in the hindquarters stage of development. Tended to swing in front and very close behind on the move.
Class 1788 PGD (3 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 4921 DAWSON, Mr Nigel & DAWSON, Mrs Elizabeth & DAWSON, Mischran The Sequel For Stubbylee JW a 20-month-old very promising young male who had commendable muscle tonew. Attractive in head set on good length strong neck. Pleasing true front, satisfactory width across the chest. Firm well-made body with good depth for age. Strong moderately angled hindquarters. Free and easy on the move with notable side gait.
2nd: 4926 DOVER, Mrs Angela Marie & DOVER, MR KEITH Palamedees Arian Khrysos At Keanver JW a rangy but shapely 2-year-old who has long, flat and open feet. Head is masculine in appearance but would be the better with more refinement. Good length neck set well into shoulders. Front tended to stand wide and needing to tighten in elbow. Flowing topline to reachy hindquarters, could have more angle in stifle. Needs to extend more on the move.

Class 1789 LD (6 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 4931 HARVEY, Mrs L Astragorn Zeus Glory Of Albaneiler (imp Aus) Jww23 an impressive male who is well balanced and presents an eye-catching appearance viewed from all angles. He has an excellent head which is of ideal shape with desired veining and necessary breed characteristics. Distinguished breed typical expression. He has a side profile which is of correct proportions, balanced in angulation front/rear with a refreshing graceful top line. Pleasing length in neck, powerful body and strong moderately angled hindquarters. It was reassuring to find a Borzoi with firm substance and well-defined muscle tone indicating that he is ’Fit for Function’. He is coming into his mature prime with a correct, good length coat to complete the image. True, precise front movement and driving rear action looking particularly good in side gait. One who does not disappoint. My Dog CC and Best of Breed winner.
2nd: 4936 LOGVINENKO, Dr Timothy Ryazan Vladimir a 5-year-old white/orange substantially bodied male who overall has nothing in exaggeration and presenting an eye-pleasing picture. Needs to be stood out over the ground to look at his best. Masculine in head but a little plain needing more refinement. True good width front, plenty of substance of body with a graceful top-line and moderately angled hindquarters. Moved well in front but would like more width behind.
