Richmond Championship Show UK, Saturday 7th September 2024
I was honoured to judge my breed at the Richmond Championship Show and thank all of the exhibitors for their entries. I enjoyed judging a good entry of quality Cairns Terriers, and was especially pleased with my Challenge winners and Best Veteran. The weather and the ring condition were not ideal, however the cairns performed well and the exhibitors endured! I appreciate all those who braved the weather to attend. My apologies for the delay in my critiques, but world travel and more terrier adventures intervened.

1st: 1740 YATES-JOHNSON, Mrs J M - Ch Pendley Seafarer
2 yr old dark brindle in short coat but with excellent harsh texture. Well defined stop and dark eyes giving a lovely expression. Moved extremely well, held his topline level and was so true coming and going. Good reach of neck which flowed into well laid shoulders. A balanced dog with very good angulation that showed well. Pleased to hear he was recently titled. RDCC
2nd: 1733 THOMAS, Mr Geoffrey - Tycadno Magic Man
This boys very attractive head piece immediately caught my eye, with a broad back skull, dark almond-shaped eye, good stop and small well placed ears. He had profuse harsh coat, although I would prefer a little less on the neck so as not to hide his outline. Very alert, a little over excited today in the ring.

Class 1055 OD (8 Entries) Abs: 0
An excellent Open dog class, it was a pleasure to judge and any of them are worthy CC winners.
1st: 1721 PARKER-TUCKER, Miss A R – Ch Uniquecottage Grey Borage
5 yr old cream dog with dark points. Obviously a wet track suited this dog as he showed himself very well, striding around the ring like he owned it. Correct bite with large, clean teeth, dark almond-shaped eyes, broad skull, strong muzzle and small well-placed ears giving a really beautiful cairn expression. Good reach of neck, well placed shoulders, good spring of rib and correct tail set. Moderate angulation front and rear, he is so well balanced. Excellent harsh, profuse double coat and well presented. When moving he showed free flowing movement with strong rear propulsion, moving with confidence and keeping a level topline. Pleased to hear he was recently titled. DCC & BOB
2nd: 1706 INETT, Miss D H & HARRISON, Mrs R A - Carradine Apple Jack
2 yr old red dog well-presented and handled. Coat seemed to have been affected by the rain. Smaller in stature than first placed dog but has good balance and angulation. He has a dark eye, small ears and defined stop giving an attractive expression. Held his topline on the move and showed good reach and drive, looking alert and agile.
3rd: 1696 FIRTH, Mr A & Mrs L, & FIRTH, Miss A Ch Cairngold Chico Jw
7 yr old red dog who made it a very difficult decision for second place and was a well-deserved Best Veteran in breed. This well balanced dog has one of the best harsh coats I have ever examined, particularly for a red. He is well constructed with a good reach of neck and well laid shoulders, level back and well sprung ribs. He has an excellent head and expression. Unfortunately he did not want to behave on the day, despite his handlers best efforts, which cost him a higher place.
