Northern Counties Chow Chow Club Championship Show 08/09/24

Grateful Thanks to the Society for the invite, and Thank You to my two stewards Sue and Gary for their efforts.

I am not usually given to preamble in critiques, but I do feel impressed enough by a couple of issues that they warrant comment. Rear movement in this breed is a distinguishing feature and in my opinion an essential aspect of breed type. Sadly the number of exhibits that displayed truly typical rear movement, both in profile and coming and going, numbered very low, Movement is the true test of structure; if it aint moving right it ain't made right, and we need to be mindful that the very specific aspects of the Chow that sets it apart from any other breed are not lost.

MPD.

1. GODBER Lechan Mr Sandman. Willing showman at that awkward stage of development where some puppies are not quite balanced, but almost! Masculine in outlook with a happy outgoing temperament. Proportionally he is almost square. Needs to come up on leg a bit for balance, but he is just a baby. Head is well balanced with muzzle proportionate to skull. Very good ears for set , shape and carriage. Eye dark and clean and his expression was pleasing, Bite and dentition correct. Neck ok for length. Shoulder assembly is good, and his bone is commensurate with his size. Will be interesting to see how he comes on. Well handled and presented in excellent condition.

2. MOORHOUSE Kenleap Naught Elf. An interesting baby with a lot to like. Nice for size, and at this stage is slightly better balanced than the first place. Basic proportion is good. Good reach of neck. Head is undoubtedly male. Expression good. Muzzle proportionate to skull and his pigment is good. Ears could be slightly higher set. Nice quality bone and substance, and particularly nice feet. Ribbing is good and his topline was firm. Slightly long in loin. Tailset could be a bit higher. On the day he was unsettled and his movement although sound was untidy. He would benefit greatly from some ringcraft, and I wish his owner well. Profuse coat presented immaculately.

PD.

1. IRWING Beaconprode Trick Or Treat. RDCC and BPIS. 10 months old shaded red, In he came switched on and ready to rock. Fantastic showman for one so young, and he has loads to like about him. His basic balance is very good. Static he presents a lovely clean outline. Leg length matches his body depth and he is correctly angled in shoulder. Nice quality bone and super neat little feet. Topline is firm and level, and his tailset is bang on. Rear is correct for angle, and his hocks are short and strong. Decent reach of neck carrying a clean and well proportioned head. Eye and expression is good. As yet he is immature in front but with time and maturity this will all come. Bite and dentition good, as is pigmentation. Ears neat and well placed. On the move he is collected and assured, but he needs to settle in rear action, and this was what cost him the CC today. The very best of temperaments, and his overall presentation was excellent. A sound and happy extrovert youngster with a lot of potential.

2. GODBER Lechan Mr Sandman. See MPD

JD.

1. OLIVEIRA Jodoka The Fool. DCC. This dog is one of those dogs that to truly appreciate you really do need to get your hands on him. He is as honest as the day is long. He is an upstanding, masculine effort with real ring presence and charisma. Lovely strength to his head without coarseness. Very good neck length, and excellent front assembly. Fantastic quality bone both ends right down to his neat well knuckled feet. Body is as square as a box and his topline level and solid. His tailset is bang on and his quarters are strong and set true. On the day his coat was patchy, but what was there was correct for texture. Coat change is not a fault in any breed, and his lack of coat today did not deter me from giving him what he deserved. Movement wise he is infuriating, he really does need to be moved at his pace to shine, and he does need a bigger ring to get in his stride, but once he gets going he is a lovely moving dog that holds his shape so well. Moderate reach and drive, he holds his head up, and he is a true and fluid mover with very good rear action and correct width both ends. Really super temperament, and I am surprised he is yet to be titled, Still a very young dog with a lot of maturing to do, but will watch his progress with interest. Best of luck with him.

2. HUNT and OLIVER Sonshidia Chief Kwangchow. An interesting dog with considerable type and quality, especially in head. Basic body proportion is good. Topline level, tailset correctly and carried well. Rear angle correct. Bone commensurate with his size, and he has good pasterns and feet. What he needs to do now is mature, especially in front as he is at present slight narrow all through.. Coat in grand nick and the colour is beautiful. He was not quite as positive on the move as the winner, but he is another that needs a bigger ring to get into his stride.

PGD.

1. SAWYER Clymarion Aberdeen Dream. Tidy dog of good quality. Square and compact in shape, and masculine in head. Muzzle in balance with his well shaped broad skull, and his bite, dentition and pigment are good. Correct length of neck into a well made front assembly. He is well boned and his chest is well filled. Back short, topline level. Tail is set high and carried correctly. Rear good for angle and he has neat little hocks. Not as positive as the main winners moving on the day, but hes a likeable dog with that has balance and type to him.

2. HUNT and OLIVER Songshidia Chief Kwangchow. See previous.

LD.

1. BONE Notorious Star Once Upon a Time (IMI ITA)> Difficult class this. Body balance with this dog is very good. He is square, balanced all through, and he has beautiful bone and substance. Topline level, tailset high. Rear angled correctly and he has lovely neat little hocks. Movement free and easy, and he was one that had vertical rear action. Lovely colour to him and texture is good. Well filled in front, with very good ribbing. Head wise I find him a tad too heavy, and I would prefer a bit more length to his muzzle for balance. Pigmentation spot on, Excellent temperament, he is a happy soul. Beautifully presented and well handled,

2. SALTER Gallant Gift for Towsuchet Faier Stalker (IMP BLR) Impressive dog for type. Head better proportioned than winners. Good bite and dentition. Fair length of neck into good shoulder assembly. Topline level, but found him slightly long in loin. Coat in good order and correct for texture. Saw glimpses of really nice movement, but he was very unsettled and did not do himself justice. Hope he learns to not give his Mum as hard a time in the future, he has a lot to like.

OD.

1. FISHER and FISHER Shulian San Angelo Star at Poppykins. Two and a half year old shaded red. Head masculine without coarseness. Good length of neck. Angle of shoulder and upperam correct, bone commensurate for his size and his feet are god. He need to mature in chest and rib. Topline level, and tailset is good, Rear drives him well and he is a willing showman with a happy disposition. A sound dog that just needs time to come together,

2. WEBB Chifido Chunky Chutney. Totally different in type to the class winner, in fact none of the dogs in the class looked anything alike. He is a fairly compact, well balanced exhibit with an excellent temperament, Put down in pristine nick, he knows his craft. Super quality bone, neat feet, and correct in pastern. His rear complements his front, and he covered the ground surely. I would prefer more length of foreleg.

3. GODBER Ch. Lechan Rodrick.

SAOCOD

1. GODBER Lechan Lewis. Black of nice unexaggerated type. Very well balanced in outline. Muzzle to skull ratio spot on, and his head has quality. Ideal length of neck into good shoulders. He has bone enough for his size, with very good feet and pasterns. I would prefer more width all through. Short and compact in body, with a very good tailset, however he would not put his tail up for love not money. Rear is angled correctly, and he moved ok. I would like to see him settle to the job in hand because overall he is a nice type and is sound.

V D/B

1. HUNT and OLIVERS Mosspark Blue Spangle. Blue bitch put down in fine fettle and very much belying her years. Sound as a bell and happy as Larry. Balanced in out line, feminine in head and her bite is good. Nice neck into a tidy front and she is well balanced all through, She enjoyed her day out. BVIS

BABYPB

1. BONE Newfangled Wish Upon A Star. What a lovely class of babies! All of them turned out beautifully, and all of them having a great time, The winner was among top 4 moving exhibits today with beautiful action all round. Balanced and compact in shape, feminine in head, and shows like a little bomb. Loads to like and of she holds together will be interesting to watch. BBPIS

2. SALTER Towsuchet Ina Pickle. Another little cracker. Super bone and substance and makings of a lovely head. Happy temperament and moved really well.

MPB.

1. SOUTHGATE Santicana’s Queen of Spades. Another lovely baby full of joy and enjoying her day out. Black with lovely profuse puppy coat. Makings of a very pretty head. Eye, expression and ear all good. Nice for neck and her basic shape is pleasing. Moved soundly and her high set tail never stopped wagging.

PB.

1. RHODES Beaconpride Hocus Pocus at Wynchobe. 10 month old black bitch, and another that needs to be gone over to be appreciated, Compact and balanced in outline. Nice quality bone to suit her size. Good in pastern and the neatest of tight little feet. Head not at all overdone and she has a really feminine charm. She moved well and held her outline static and in motion. Excellent temperament and condition, and she was handled to get the best out of her. BPB

2. COPELAND Rendel Tootie Frootie at Maxjabar. Another promising baby with a lot to like, Nice for size, and good quality bone, Fairly compact in outline. Head is feminine, but not without strength. Moved soundly but not quite the precision of the winner today. Excellent presentation. Super temperament and another lovely wagging high set tail,

3. HUNT and OLIVER Kingrick Shanghai Bobbie

JB,

1. SALTER Towsuchet Forget Me Not, A quality bitch dripping in breed type. Honesty made all through with excellent ring presence. From the ringside she can look slightly long bodied, but hands on her tells the true tale, and she is actually very compact. Lovely solid topline with ideal tail set and carriage. Depth of chest and leg length correct and she has the best of bone, feet and pasterns. Her head os strong but feminine and she was one of very few that looked at me right with that unmistakable scowl. Ears bang on, Muzzle to skull ratio ideal, and bite and dentition very good, Her neck is correct for length, and her front assembly is sound. Ribbing ideal, and she is short enough in loin to be compact in body. Her rear is fantastic. Ideally angled, short in hock and her action is spot on. In profile her movement has ideal reach and drive, and she maintains a parallel action both ends. In the challenge she pushed the ticket winner all the way, and I was nitpicking between them. She narrowly lost out the winner on her slightly cleaner front action, but it was a very hot thing, by far the closest decision of the day, and and I was very happy to award her the RBCC and RBIS. Delighted to hear this gave her her title, it is very well deserved,

2. BASTON Wengeordy Oh My Gosh, Another quality bitch with loads to like. Tall and upstanding, she too has real ring presence. Not quite the head of the class winner at this stage, but it is a quality head and by no means plain, She is very well made all through. Moved very well covering the ground with ease, Excellent temperament and very well presented,

3. HOLLIES and CARR Janqbu Dan Ren

PGB.

1. RENNIES Rendel Love Me Tender. BCC and BIS. Beautiful self red 19 month old bitch of excellent quality and type. Squarely bodied with excellent bone all through. Head feminine but strong. Ears and eye and expression all excellent and she looks at you right. Topline, tailset and croup all spot on, Ribbing good, loin short, Her shoulder assembly is sound, and she has excellent quality bone, pastern,s and feet. Her rear is correctly angled, and she outmoved every other exhibit there, with correct reach and drive and an excellent pendulum action to the rear. She moves with width fore and aft, and although she needs to drop and fill in chest a bit, she is young and this will come with time. Her coat is correct for texture and her colour is rich and bold, She was very well presented, and although clearly independently minded, she does enough to get by, was a pleasure judging her, and to have two such nice quality bitches battle for a CC is great. Eventually her slightly tidier front movement swung the ticket her way.

 LB.

1. SQUIRES Kyong Klever Bugga. Really nice for size and substance, she has strength all through without coarseness. Head has a lot to like, good for neck and her topline and tailset are correct. Covered the ground ok, but dont think she appreciated the mat, Changing coat, but what she had was correct for texture. Sound bitch with an excellent temperament,

2. HUNT and OLIVER Mosspark Blue Spangle. See previous.

SOAOCB

1. WEBB Ch. Chifido Follow That Dream. Black bitch with loads to like. Very nice in head with excellent balance of muzzle to skull. Bite and dentition good, pigment good, In profile she is squarely made and compact, and she holds her shape very well on the move. Bone, pastern and feet all very good. Topline correct, as is tail set and carriage. Rear is angled correctly. To be critical Id like a touch more neck length and a wee bit more width all through, but her quality is apparent, and her movement in profile is very pleasing. Altogether a very tidy exhibit of quality that is presented to perfection. Kept her in last four for CC.

2. HOLLIES and CARR Lechan Livia. Upstanding and strongly made blue bitch of quality. Super bone and substance. Excellent ribbing and topline. Tailset correct. Rear is very well made and she moved well. Not quite as compact in body as the winner, and I preferred the head of first. Two nice bitches.

OB.

1. HOLLIES and CARR Ch. Jabrevla Dotty Doris JW. Shaded red of love size and overall make and shape, Pleasing head. Excellent length of neck into a very good front assembly. Id like her a tad shorter backed, Rear strong and she covers the ground with a fluid easy action. Quality bitch, put down in excellent nick and she shows out her skin,

2. ALLEN Clymarian Blue Illusion. Another nice one with loads to like. Same remarks to first apply, and she too was a well balanced exhibit that was put down well. Moved ok, just a bit close behind today. Excellent temperament and handled to her advantage.
