Breed: Papillon

Many thanks to the committee for another invitation to judge at this well run show & to the Papillon exhibitors for braving the cold. It would be foolish to think that one does not know most exhibitors & have seen most of the dogs in the ring, but on the day it is paramount to remove these thoughts & judge with a fresh eye. I thought the entry was good by present day standards & was very pleased with my main winners. Lots could carry some more body, especially the males & nothing that I felt needed more bodyweight was rewarded. Although the breed is a dainty breed, that does not translate in my mind, to thin and weedy. Mouths were excellent & temperaments generally good. Not all that many that were truly accurate up and back, but very few with really poor front construction & most had fairly good angulation and upper arms, which I felt was better than the last time I judged the breed. Presentation left a little to be desired on quite a few; I appreciate that dogs are dogs and a little staining is sometimes acceptable but beyond that, it becomes too much in my opinion.

Veteran Dog (2, 1)

1st) Jorgealin Midnight Magic for Kingshaven (M Keown), very good start to the day, liked him a lot & appreciated his virtues. Good head for shape and balance, excellent dentition for his age - to be commended. Sound and free on the move & he looks good in profile. I would prefer a slightly better tail but overall a very typical dog. BVD & BVIB.

Minor Puppy Dog (3, 1)

1st) Amicae Play with Fire (Mrs M Whitehill), very pretty young dog with a really lovely expression. His silhouette is very typical of the breed and I thought he was so lovely and dainty, but not lacking substance in any way. Could have been a mite better in shoulder & upperarm which showed on the move, but he was firm in topline for his age & very good in hindquarters. I thought his size was lovely & a really typical youngster. In good coat for his age and it was silky to the touch.

2nd) Inixia Glamour Boy at Jhanakia (Lady J & Mrs S & Mrs S Thompson & Austin & Stanbury), very typical outline and he reminds me a lot of his father. He is a touch larger than the winner but he too is a promising young chap. Very well developed for his age; good to go over and all of a piece. I felt he was truer in front on the move than the winner, but he didn’t quite have the kindness in expression at this stage. Very well presented & certainly one for the future.

Puppy Dog (4, 1)

1st) Graycaz Where I Go Hugo's (Mrs C Lee-Slater), a very beautiful and typical puppy. Lovely head and eye, excellent ears & a very good expression. Well laid shoulder and good upperarm. His feet are fairly hare-like and he has the correct amount of bone so as to give him the element of daintiness we all look for. Firm topline, neat underline & used himself well on the move, extending as he should in profile. A very useful prospect & one with a future I am sure. BPD & eventually BPIB. Gave a very good account of himself in the toy puppy group.

2nd) Amicae Piping Hot for Manawyddan (Dr M L & Dr E A Griffiths), very confident youngster with a butterfly attitude; but much rangier than the winner at this stage. I liked his expression, but he is a touch broader in muzzle than I would prefer. Well made in body, but needing a few more months maturity I think, as he is a little raw at the present time. Could carry his tail a little better. Sound on the move & very well presented.

3rd) Havin A Good Time at Melangel (Mrs M, Miss B & Miss J Mann)

Junior Dog (8, 2)

1st) Tarnock Wiggle Giggle (Ms D Olof), very lovely youngster with a lot going for him. He is so typical of the breed and full of himself, just as a teenage male should be. Excellent eye and expression, and lovely ears. Firm neck and topline, and he stands on good legs and hare feet. At this point I wondered if he would be my CC winner as he is so free and easy on the move. Close up in the challenge & certainly Champion quality. Very well presented in a jacket of silk and handled to full advantage. I see I gave his father a ResCC and the apple hasn’t fallen all that far from the tree.

2nd) Graycaz On A Mission (Mr D & Mrs K Carter), quite a different type to the winner but with a lot to commend him. Another with a very good head and eye, lovely ears; just enough neck & very dainty throughout but not lacking for body or substance. Very good profile mover. Not so true in front as the winner I thought. Presented to sheer perfection & close up.

3rd) Elendil San Miguel (Lady J & Mrs S & Mrs S Thompson & Austin & Stanbury)

Post Graduate Dog (4, 0)

1st) Melangel Magic Mix (Mrs S Morrell), easy winner of this class for his style and movement. Typical head for shape and balance, finely pointed muzzle and lovely teeth; but his eyes could be darker. Lovely ears & very mobile. Very good to go over and all of a piece. Soundest in this class & a very good profile mover. Coat in excellent order but could perhaps be a touch silkier for ideal.

2nd) Tarnock All Eyes On Me (Ms D Olof), I liked this one too; good head and his eyes were a touch better than the winners. I thought the winner was a little better in ear. He was good to go over and generally a good make and shape, but he didn’t quite have the accuracy of the winner on the move today. Another nice one, well presented in a silky jacket and handled very well.

Limit Dog (8, 0)

1st) Finity Run The Gauntlet JW (Miss K Mason), a late arrival into this class & the last one to be seen. Not a dog I can say that I’ve ever noticed or one who has particularly caught my attention before. I liked him a lot on the table, very well balanced head properties and well fringed ears framing his face. Excellent forehand; super shoulder and return of upperarm and good depth to his chest. Well ribbed back & carried his tail well. In excellent coat & prime body condition. On the move he went as his construction suggested he might, so free and easy with foot perfect accuracy. Super hare feet & fine bone. Won this class on his front construction and his classy side profile & upped it a gear in the challenge to win the CC, his first I am told.

2nd) Feyetas Love Me Tender (Mrs S Turner), I really liked this young dog & thought he had the most gorgeous head and eye. Beautiful ears and lovely fringing. Not quite the front angulation of the winner but he is very nice to go over, so correct in all departments and a really active, stylish mover. Finely boned and just right for condition. Considered for ResCC & close up. Most typical of his breeding.

3rd) Skyvana Catch Me at Jhanakia JW (Mrs S & Mrs J Austin & Thompson)

Open Dog (4, 1)

1st) Ir/sp Ch Tres Cherie Hot As Hell (Messrs S & J Carroll & Newman), very stylish dog with a lot going for him. He has a lovely balanced outline and silhouette. Beautiful head and eye and such super fringing to his ears. Excellent neck and shoulder & super feet. Finely boned and so elegant. Well ribbed back & good in topline. Stylish and exuberant on the move & is very sound when he settles down. Impressed me a lot to win this class but in the challenge, he played up a touch, and so ended up with the resCC. Lots to like, and he was an object lesson in presentation. A really quality Papillon and a dog to be proud of.

2nd) Amicae Top of The Class (Mrs M Whitehill), a real favourite of mine and I initially thought he would be the winner as he is so typical of the breed. Beautiful head and eye; finely pointed muzzle & large ears, all male but so elegant. Really well made front and rear, firm topline & lovely hindquarters. Carried his tail well and presented a very good picture. In excellent coat and condition, close up here & one who would well deserve to carry a title as there really is so little to dislike about him. Another who I would have been happy to sign a CC for.

3rd) Purepixie Red Admiral (Ms H V Walsh)

Good Citizen Dog Scheme Dog (2, 0)

1st) Ch Pappretty Grt Expectations (C D Anderson) one who I have judged before and his presentation is truly first class. He boasts a lovely head and eye; with large, well fringed ears. He is well bodied and in the peak of condition, and clearly well cared for. I would prefer his shoulders a touch better laid and a little more return of upperarm, and this does show on the move. His hindquarters are very well developed and he uses them well on the move. Standing he is so typical and I thought today deserved to be in the shortlist for the CC. His attitude is very typical of the breed and I loved it.

2nd) Amicae Kenzo at Rosenjon (Mrs R A Hobson), this dog is very smart & typical of the breed. Good head and eye, but I preferred the expression of the winner. Well made in front, firm topline and well ribbed back. Tail a touch tight, but he carried himself well on the move and gave a very good account of himself. Very good coat of correct texture.

Veteran Bitch (2, 0)

1st) Ch Jorgealin Moonstar at Purepixie (Ms H V Walsh), I have seen this bitch on many occasions and have always thought she was worthy of her title, which she eventually gained. She has the prettiest of heads, beautiful fringing and a classic expression. To go over, there so little to fault and she is typically feminine, fine and dainty. Very sound on the move & quite accurate. I cut her for the CC & thought against her younger competitors she was just showing her age a little on the move here and in the challenge for BVIB. Notwithstanding that, she is a most worthy Champion.

2nd) Tarnock Devore (Ms D Olof), a very smart example of the breed who shows the lasting qualities & is a credit to the breed. Very expressive, her ears are a super size & she is so pretty. Good neck and shoulder, firm topline and a beautifully set tail. Completely out of coat on the day and in a class with a bitch who was in the finest coat, it was a hard contest! Lots to like and very sound on the move.

Minor Puppy Bitch (2, 1)

1st) Keomandi May Queen for Pappretty (C D Anderson), precocious puppy who had so much confidence in this hall, it was completely commendable – if they will show at SWKA in October they will show anywhere! Very pretty, lovely ears and she will be quite a glamour girl when her fringing comes. Good neck and shoulder, firm topline and just needs to carry her tail a touch better as yet, but I expect this will come. Sound and free on the move and a useful prospect.

Puppy Bitch (4, 0)

1st) Graycaz Dutch Courage (Mrs C Lee-Slater), litter sister to BPD and very similar to him. Lovely head and eye, super expression and large ears. Well made in front, and she has a good body for her age. Firm topline and lovely tail for both set and carriage. Very sound, free and typical on the move and so well presented in a silky jacket. I liked her a lot, so typical of the breed and she has a beautiful shape standing and moving. She has a typical butterfly attitude and deserved to be in my final 4 for the CC. Notwithstanding that, I felt in the challenge for BPD her brother was, as many males often are, a touch more advanced & he upped it a gear to clinch BPIB.

2nd) Keomandi Moonlite Serenade (M Keown), another very nice young bitch, so typical of the breed being dainty and elegant; lots to like about her head and eye, she has a super expression and lovely ears. Good neck and shoulder and very firm in topline even at this tender age. Very free and sound on the move, although I just preferred the profile carriage of the winner today. She too should have many good days and I envisage a good career awaits her.

3rd) Lastayla Hocus Pocus (Miss M & Mrs S Last)

Junior Bitch (3, 1)

1st) Keomandi Lady of The Lake (Ms H V Walsh), the most typical example of the breed out of these two, she is very well headed and so expressive. Enough front angulation, although a little more wouldn’t do her any harm. She is firm enough in topline and her tail is reasonably well set. Still to come to hand as yet, but she is sound and shapely and a generally good type of bitch. Very good jacket for quality and texture.

2nd) Lastayla Hocus Pocus (Miss M & Mrs S Last), quite a sweet bitch sired by the winner of GCD. Her head is attractive, and her ears are fairly good for shape and set. She is quite narrow in front, and even for a Papillon is rather too slight. A little upright both ends & this showed on the move, being rather choppy and not extending with any great freedom or reach. Very well handled.

Post Graduate Bitch (5, 0)

1st) Ablazzor Ebony and Ivory at Jhanakia (Mrs S & Mrs J Austin & Thompson), the most typical in this class for her shape, balance and outline. Her head is very typical of the breed and she is most attractive there. Good neck and front angulation, which I admired. Firm topline and her tail is decent for both set and carriage. Very sound and free on the move and overall she presents a good picture of a smart Papillon bitch. Excellent coat texture but just a little too much ticking beyond what I would consider acceptable, and although I cut her for the CC; this was the deciding factor ultimately.

2nd) Feyetas Jellybean (Mrs S Turner) initially I thought this bitch may be the winner, I see she is sired by the 2nd in LD, and she shares many of his attributes, particularly his beautiful head and eye. In many ways she is identical to him, and this must surely be the aim of any breeding programme. I felt she was a touch upright in front compared to the winner and not so clever there when standing, but otherwise a beautiful bitch and I would imagine should be a decent producer for this clever breeder.

3rd) Manawyddan Springtime (Dr M L & Dr E A Griffiths)

Limit Bitch (4, 1)

1st) Panspayon Pennyroyale JW (Miss S Orchard), my first impression of this bitch was one of a very beautiful and streamlined silhouette and I found nothing on going over her to change that impression. She is not what I would term a ‘glamour girl’ but she is honest and most typical. Her head and eye are pretty & her expression is captivating. She is presented in the most beautiful condition, and on going over her there really is not a lot that I would want to change, perhaps she is a mite heavier in bone than I would want, but that is nit picking. I would like her a touch more solid in temperament to fully project herself, and this was a consideration today. Notwithstanding, I think she is a lovely bitch and would well deerve to carry a title.

2nd) Angullyon Enigma's Secret (Mrs J A Walklett), another very typical Papillon; although she does not have the beautiful outline of the winner standing or moving. Typical head and eye, but her ears are not that of the winners. Very well made in body, with complimentary angles both ends. Quite sound and free on the move & presented in first class order.

3rd) Tarnock Devore (Ms D Olof)

Open Bitch (4, 1)

1st) Ir Ch Candygolds Queenie for Denemore (Messrs S & J Carroll & Newman), when I looked up from the table and saw this bitch across the ring, she completely filled my eye. Her silhouette and outline are exactly what I look for in the breed – elegance, with a neck flowing into a firm topline & a well set tail to give the breed that element of ‘airiness’ and ‘lightness’ which can come only from the animal having scope & a touch of daintiness. Her head and eye are so expressive, and even if her ears are not the largest; they are perfectly acceptable. Her neck and shoulders are first rate, and her topline is firm, leading to a beautifully set and well plumed tail. Standing on the most wonderful legs and feet, she moved with ease and precision & had possibly the most powerful hindquarters of the day. Her profile action is simply spot on & her presentation couldn’t be faulted. On the day she was everything that I was looking for, and it was my pleasure to award her the BCC & BOB. Her style, attitude and attributes I would hope, will easily carry her to a UK title. A truly beautiful bitch.

2nd) Feyeta I'm On Fire (Mrs M Whitehill), I loved everything about this bitch, she is so ‘me’. Her head and eye are gorgeous, and she has the smudge of her illustrious ancestor, Ch Fairy Tale. She is so typical of her breeding in make and shape, and her construction is first rate. On the move she went as I expect the breed to, with a beautiful hind action and returning true in front, no ‘picking up’ which can come only as the result of poor front construction. On the day she was lacking in coat, but coat grows – her construction will not alter; and it was this that I wanted to reward, clearly Ch quality, as marked by the ResCC. A quality bitch.

3rd) Aurora vom Schwabenhof for Temelora (Imp Deu) (Mrs S Morrell), completed a trio of lovely bitches and I would have been happy to have signed a CC for her too; a pleasure to judge.
