Smoothcoat Chihuahuas

I would like to thank the committee for inviting me to judge at this very well run show. I would also like to thank my two ring stewards Pam and Ralph who did a sterling job of keeping the ring running smoothly, and finally thank you to the exhibitors for entering your dogs.

Since I last judged the breed, I found mouths have improved and size seeming to be more under control, while rear movement and lack of drive is a problem and needs addressing. Being a breeder myself I appreciate trying to get the whole package in what’s meant to be the smallest breed in the world is not an easy task. Bitches were stronger than dogs and the quality much stronger in the higher classes in both sexes, which I found slightly concerning. Could this be due to breeders not breeding as much? Or maybe we just aren’t sharing our breeding enough with each other? Food for thought.

1st Stading’s, Toltechi’s Dante Le Poete JW, 10 months black tri puppy. Handsome head with a well rounded skull, defined stop and correct length of muzzle, finished with large flaring ears which were used well. Nice length to neck, level topline kept at all times. Highset tail with correct carriage. Super outline on this puppy, both standing and moving. He showed very well for his handler, but he could be stronger in rear movement. BP

Class 1443- Open Dog (4)

1st Mackay’s, Beaulamey Show Me The Money For Tarabish, A smart cream who took my eye as he entered the ring. My notes say sound as a pound and presented in top condition. Quality head properties, correct length of muzzle with dark pigment, large flaring ears correctly set which he used so well with the desired saucy expression that is being lost in the breed today. He’s well balanced, ample neck, great front assembly with straight forelegs. His topline is level and body compact, leading to a well set flat furry tail. His rear assembly is as well made as his front. He powered swiftly round the ring , really driving from behind, moving correctly in all directions. A lovely example. CC, BOB and later, shortlisted in a quality toy group.

2nd Lyons, Ch Bondor Given Arfa Chance For Akashic JW, 3 years red, this lad was the surprise of the day for me. Not a dog that’s really taken my eye before however, a lot of the winner’s comments apply to this dog in particular, well balanced, great front assembly with straight forelegs and he also really powered round the ring driving from the rear. Well set tail, which was flat and furry but preferred the tail carriage of the winner. A worthy Champion RCC.

Class 1450- Open Bitch (5)

This was a cracking class. All worthy of green cards, and I wish I had a few more to give out in this class. With different performances on different days, I ‘m sure places will frequently change between all 5 entries.

1st. Hornby’s Ch Bramerita Posh Totty , 3 years red, Scores for being small compact , dainty and sassy. Of good breed type, correct head, housing correct dentition, saucy expression with large round eyes. Good neck leading to correctly placed shoulders and straight front. Level topline, correct tail and set. Correctly angulated muscled rear which she used well moving with purpose, soundly and briskly driving from the rear in all directions. Overall a lovely example . CC

2nd. Langford’s Ch Boetandales Rhythm Goes On, 2 years , gold and white. Dual size. This bitch had the best expression of the day for me. Classic ultra feminine and saucy . Her head was a lovely dome, with a definite stop, housing an immaculate mouth. Her eyes large, round and dark finished off with correct large flaring ears and dark pigment. Great length of neck making her look oh so elegant when she moves. Straight front, shoulders are well laid leading to a level topline, correct tail set and carriage. Well made and muscled rear assembly and she used it well on the move, driving from behind in all directions. She pushed hard for the CC, preferred the more compact body of the winner . RCC in very good company.
