Breed: Poodle (Miniature)

City of Birmingham Canine Association 31/08/2024, Miniature Poodles

I was deeply honoured to be asked to judge miniature poodles and I thank the committee and my hardworking stewards for their help in keeping the ring running smoothly. I was delighted with my entries and I thank you all for letting me judge your wonderful dogs.

Special Beginners Dog: No Entries

Veteran Dog: (1)

1. Jencro American Star at Aramin Greenwood, Mrs G.

This 8 year old silver was presented in fine body condition. He has a masculine head and although his eye could be better I did like his intelligent expression. He has good bone and muscle tone and stands on great feet. His tailset could be higher and although slightly long in loin he moved well enough round the ring showing some drive. Best Veteran

Puppy Dog: (3,1)

1. Chesterhill Oceans Orca at Anorien Young, Miss K A.

So much to like about this boy. His head is masculine yet not overdone and his almond shaped eye just glints with fire. He was a bit loose in front today but this will improve with time as he has a super forechest and spring of rib. His front angulation really allows his strong neck and head to be carried high which gives him a super outline. His bone and muscle tone are just right and although a bit long in loin his rear assembly just powered him round the ring showing off his proud carriage and rear drive.

2. Arrowflight Beau at the Ball Ling, Mrs A and Mr K.

Another dog I really liked. He is just a very raw baby but when he was stacked he made the most beautiful shape – square and so well balanced. I loved his clean head and expression which was framed by lovely long leathers. I would prefer more bone and body to him but this should come as he matures. On the move, he was a bit unsettled today.

Junior Dog: (2)

1. Ch Michandy It’s Showtime at Pupstar JW Lee-Morris, Mr A and Mrs S.

This lad is really well named – he came into the ring looking every bit the polished performer. He is so well built with a super front and spring of rib leading on to a muscular loin. Straight legs standing on good feet all helps him move with reach. Fabulous correct coat texture for one so young and it was presented immaculately. He moved round the ring with a free and easy gait however, in the challenge for best dog, I felt he rushed too much thereby moving close behind and losing hid outline. I was delighted to hear he was awarded Junior Group 2 later on. Reserve Best Dog, Best Junior

2. Volgaris Spice up Your Life Sellick, Miss K.

This brown has a very masculine head and although not oversized, there was a bit too much of him for me. Clipping his face shorter would have allowed me to assess his face proportions and chiselling better. He moved OK today but just lacked that poodley spark. His brown coat is of even colour throughout.

Post Graduate Dog (1)

1. Regulus Black Grindey, Mr R M and Dyer, Mr S.

This is a short, cobby male with so much to like. His head is pleasing with a good chin and chiselling but I would prefer a better eye. He is well balanced with good front and rear angles, straight legs and good feet. He has a super tail carriage and set. Balanced on the move.

Open Dog (3)

1. Ch Sculbrook Had to be a Miracle JW Brook, Miss F.A.

This is such a quality, typey dog. He is so well made – compact, strong muscular and yet not overdone In any way. Masculine head with a nice eye. He has an excellent front which shows off his lengthy neck superbly. His super tail set and carriage just balances the outline and when he moved it was with purpose and foot perfect. His coat is of harsh texture tailored to perfection which just accentuated all his attributes. He held his outline and poise in the challenge and was awarded Best Dog.

2. Raeannes Hidden Liaison Walker, Mrs A.

I thought this dog held an impressive shape whilst stacked. He is a finer boned boy yet his head was masculine enough. He has good head proportions and spring of rib. I felt him a bit upright in shoulder which unfortunately showed when he was moving. Despite this, he has a light easy gait.

3. Fredachris Twist in Time Harvey, Miss R and Mann, Miss C

Good Citizen Dog: No Entries

Special Beginners Bitch: (2)

1. Highsummer Delta Wightman, Miss L.

A compact bitch with nice head proportions and expression. Her front and back angles are balanced allowing her to move with purpose whilst keeping her topline.

2. Sumania Opal: Clarke Mrs S.

This girl has a lovely feminine head and eye which I really liked. She is well constructed and has great feet. Unfortunately she just lacked the enthusiasm to move with purpose.

Veteran Bitch: No Entries

Puppy Bitch (4,1)

1. Arrowflight Debutante Tate, Mrs E.

An ultra feminine bitch with the most beautiful head and expression. She is still so very raw with a lot of filling out to do both in body and muscle but I think she will be super once she matures. Her feet and tailset are OK and her front was a bit loose today but she does have the front and rear angles to allow her to be more precise on the move. Reserve Best Bitch

2. Highsummer Delta: Critique as SPB

3. Little Red Princess Ealden, Mrs B and Lawrance, Mr J

Junior Bitch (2,1)

1. Volgarus Cinnamon Spice Wells, Mrs J.

A lovely 12 month brown girl with enough bone standing on good feet. She presents as compact and short in loin with a good tail set. Excellent harsh coat well presented. A bit heavy in backskull for me but She has a good reach of neck into well placed shoulders to allow her to move with purpose.

Post Graduate Bitch (6,3)

1. Shanandi Fancy Dress at Myhaven Warnes, Mrs J.

This brown compact bitch scores for bone and depth of chest although she needs to tighten up in front. Her head and eye is pleasing with a long foreface with chiselling. She shows a decent length of neck flowing into a good spring of rib and correct tail set. She wasn’t happy moving on the carpet today but I saw enough movement to assess her fully and give her the class.

2. Sumania Opal: Critique as SPB

3. Arianmin She Steels the Show Greenwood, Mrs G

Limit Bitch (2,2)

Open Bitch (4,1)

1. UK Ch Volgarus Candid Clara Wells, Mrs J.

Wow! What a splendid showgirl she is. Her cream coat is textbook dense and harsh and her head and expression is so well proportioned and those almond eyes give the look only a poodle can give. Her head is so pretty she defies you not to look at her. She is short and compact with the most delightful front and rear angles which allows her to move round the ring effortlessly, holding her head high and keeping her topline. On examination, her construction feels just ‘right’ and there is very little by way of fault with her, and her superb movement is testament to her construction. It was a joy to learn she was awarded Utility Group 2 later on in the day. Best Bitch, Best of Breed.

2. Sariante Triss Merrigold Harvey, Miss R and Mann, Miss C.

This white bitch has super dark pigment and stands on lovely feet. Her head and eye are ok and there is enough chin and some chiselling. She has a clean backskull. Today she lacked some enthusiasm only a poodle can give but as she is a longer cast bitch , she can cover the ground with ease.

3. Arianmin She Steels the Show Greenwood, Mrs G

Good Citizen Bitch (1)

1. River Starlight at Tatalena Tate Mrs L and Tate Miss L.

Compact petite bitch with a clean head and good chin. She has a short loin and good tailset with lovely dark pigment. Her jacket is of good texture and was presented to advantage giving her a super profile. She moved OK but I particulary liked watching the unity between dog and handler.
