BOURNEMOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

10TH AUGUST 2024

2019 should have been my original appointment but because of Covid I have had to wait until now. I always make a point of not looking at what I did last time as it is always the dog on the day that counts so does not necessarily mean the same dogs getting top honours. However, looking back at my last judging appointment, I did place a lot of the dogs today that I had previously, so my opinion of them has obviously not changed. Thank you to the exhibitors for taking my decisions so sportingly. Numerically a small entry but I found what I was looking for and pleased to see my BOB shortlisted in a strong Gundog Group and my puppy to go Group 2 behind the eventual BPIS.

On the whole I found colour to be good and length of neck improved and did not find dogs who lacked the length I was looking for.

A couple of points I found of concern and the main one was heads. Where have all the beautiful Gordon Setter heads gone? Looking from the side most dogs had the brick on brick head I was looking for but looking front on found heads to be too broad in back skull giving an incorrect expression and not the soft desirable head I was looking for. There should be work, chiselling below the eyes, a lot were plain in head and some with round eyes. Think Carefully what you are looking for when breeding a litter as once gone you may never get that head back.

DOGS

PD – 1

1 Sandiford & Lewis – Hernwood Rocket Man; what a super prospect this 9 month puppy is. He is well balanced and presents a lovely outline when stood. Gentle expression, long low set ears, dark eyes of correct shape, long neck into well placed shoulders. Good bone and straight front, well sprung ribs and correctly angulated quarters which allowed him to move out on a super, effortless stride at one with his handler. I’m sure this young man has a very bright future. BP

PGD – 6 (1)

1 Nagaty – Marlbeck Maldini; Nothing to hide as still growing his coat but presents a balanced outline when stood with a correct forehand and straight front. Deep in chest giving plenty of heart and lung room and short in loin. Correctly angulated rear quarters allow him to move out on an easy stride while holding a level topline. His correct construction clinched him the RCC

2 Ashton – Forester’s Northern Hunter of Darkmoor with Gadieburn (Imp Ger); A different type to my winner being heavier set. Masculine head of correct proportions with a good stop, long neck into well placed shoulders. Straight front with good bone and deep in brisket. Well held topline on the move.

3 Ball – Lignum Caribou

1 Bain – Palangor Moonlight Echo at Pangarak; Correct sized dog with a balanced outline. Excellent forehand, well off for bone with good feet and legs. Masculine head, dark eye and low set ears. Excellent reach of neck flowed into a level topline with a correct tail set. Moved out well. Lovely clear tan. Pushed hard for top honours.

2 Henderson – When I Was Your Man Black Lofty (Shcex) (Imp Pol); Longer cast than 1 and preferred 1’s forehand. Masculine in head with a super long reach of neck flowing into his level topline and correct tail set. Deep in brisket, super width of well, muscled thigh allowing him to move with drive.

3 Thorpe – Caradallis Sky Rocket JW

OD – 3

1 Mitchell – Sh Ch Cafotaliena Thief Of Hearts By Brobruick; Gave him the Junior class the last time I judged and he has obviously fulfilled that early promise as he has now gained his title. Masculine head with long low set ears and long neck. He has a good straight front and is deep in brisket. Correct bone and good colour. Stacked he did not do himself any favours but on the move everything gelled and he moved out well on an easy stride to take the CC

2 Phililips, Watkins & Miles – Sh Ch Glenmaurangi Mandalorian JW; In my notes says ‘boy is he a handful!!’ Well constructed male with a masculine head, lovely dark eye and low set ears, long reach of neck into a correct forehand and a level topline. Due to his over exuberance his back-end movement was rather erratic which cost him higher honours.

1 Lines – Flaxheath Centrefold; Another exciting prospect and another quality puppy from this small kennel. Feminine head of correct proportions with a good stop. Dark eyes and low set ears. Long in neck which flowed into well placed shoulders and a correct forehand. Deep in brisket, long from hip to hock with well bent stifles and short hocks. Moved out well and was unlucky to meet the puppy dog today, wish I had two BP awards. Will watch her progress with interest.

1 Sandiford & Mazzeo – Eusanit Marcella; was really taken by this young lady and not one I have come across before, but she pushed hard for top honours. Feminine head with gentle expression, dark eyes, low set ears. Long arched neck flowing into a correct forehand and level topline. Well sprung ribs, short in loin. Well developed hind quarters which enabled her to drive around the ring. I am sure her day will come, very promising.

2 Osborn – Amscot Air Of Success At Boyers; Bigger than 1 but still retaining her femininity with a correctly proportioned head. Long neck which flows into a level topline and correct tail set. Good depth of brisket and spring of rib giving her plenty of heart and lung room. Excellent quarters which allowed her to move out true.

3 Ball – Kilnrae Black Sapphire

1 Leonard – Painted Lady At Tregarrick; I have always liked this bitch and was not disappointed when I went over her. Feminine in head, strong clean neck flowing into a well constructed forehand and level topline. Deep in brisket, correct length of loin into well angulated rear quarters with a super width of well-muscled thigh. Moved out well. RCC

2 Burke – Beechlake Hey Jude; Pushed my winner hard but just preferred the more rugged appearance of 1. Super feminine bitch, made along similar lines to winner giving a balanced outline which comes from her correct construction. Moved with drive.

3 Roberts – Moonglade Lily Mae Magic

O – 3

1 Sandiford & Lewis – Hernwood Gin Fizz JW; Caught my eye on the first move around the ring a real show girl. Feminine in head with a long reach of neck into a super forehand with well laid-back shoulders. She flowed from the tip of her nose to the tip of her tail holding her topline on the move. Deep chest and well ribbed up with a strong arched loin. Broad muscular thighs, correct from hip to hock which enabled her to really move out around the ring. Delighted to see her shortlisted in a strong Gundog Group. Her first CC and I am sure the others will follow. CC & BOB

2 Upton-Lovett & Upton – Roydack Portrait Of A Lady; An upstanding and rangier bitch than 1. Super long neck into correct forehand with an excellent lay of shoulder, deep in brisket with a correct length of loin, well-muscled quarters which she used on the move.

3 Hall – Clohass Diamond By Melview

VB – 2

Two bitches in excellent condition, preferred the size of my winner.

1 Slaughter – Sh Ch Cairacailie Night Of Love With Ordett JW; 8 years old and can still show the youngsters a thing or two. Feminine in head with super low set ears. Strong in neck flowing into a correct forehand and lay of shoulder. Deep in brisket with elbows well tucked in. Short in loin and broad well-muscled quarters and correct tail set. Well held topline on the move. BV

2 Nagaty – Ch Forester’s Xclusive Edition Of Darkmoor At Marlbeck (Imp Ger); 11 years old and a different type to 1 being a bigger bitch throughout. Well constructed with a level topline and tail set. Holding her colour very well for her age.
