Windsor Dog Show Society

Breed: Spaniel (Welsh Springer)

Windsor 2024

Welsh Springer Spaniels.

An honour to judge at this prestigious show. Fine weather and a decent sized ring made for a pleasant day. Presentation was first class and temperaments continue to improve with very few backing off. I was concerned to see quite a few carrying their tails high. Although this is only one point, it does affect the profile on the move. As breeders we must remember that we are breeding spaniels not miniature setters. We do not want to lose breed type. Yes, the standard asks for a long neck but it does also ask for well sprung ribs. It also states that a Welshie should be “compact not leggy”; these should be taken into consideration when planning a litter.

Veteran (5,2abs)

1 Brown’s Bowdonia Ozzie

Now nine years old and in super coat and condition. Balanced in head with good length of skull. He has a strong neck of good length and nicely sloping shoulders. Well ribbed and firm in top line, he has good width to his quarters. Moving easily and carrying his tail correctly. I was pleased to award him Best Veteran.

2 Caldwell and McDowell’s Bowdonia Only The Brave for Cerysan

Another nine year old defying his age and looking so well. Has a terrific head and clean neck of good length. Well boned front legs, elbows are nicely tucked in. He is well balanced in body and has good rear angulation. Not a positive behind as the winner here and tended to carry his tail a little high.

3 Blackford’s Amblelight Galatea

Junior Dog (4)

1 Barkley’s Jacranella Galahad of Cherryheath

Now 16 months, masculine boy up to size but balanced through. Strong neck of good length leads to well laid shoulders. Well ribbed for his age with good depth of brisket. He has width to his quarters and hocks are nicely let down. This win gave him his final points for his Junior Warrant. Well Done!

2 Chimes’ Bronnydene Fly Red Kite

Finer made boy giving a couple of months away in age. Balanced head with kind eyes and correct ear placement. He was clean in neck and held his top line well on the move. Just needs to fill out and strengthen through.

3 Harrison’s Glenbrows Amadeus

Yearling Dog (3)

1 Harrison’s Glenbrows Casanova

Just 16 months and very forward in body and so good to go over. Balanced head with long neck and sloping shoulders. Good depth and width to his chest. Strong over the loins and firmly coupled. He has a good turn of stifle and used this to advantage on the move. Should go on to do well.

2 Williams’ Nyliram The Alibi for Trebettyn

Although 18 months, is not as forward as the winner but is progressing along the right lines. Balanced head which will get even better as it breaks. He is straight in front and has good length to his ribs. Good rear angulation. He moved with enthusiasm.

3 Caldwell and Levy’s Cerysan Limited Edition

Post Graduate Dog (3)

1 Clarke and Gaylor’s Tigerrock Tick Tick Boom

This two-year-old lad grew on me as time went on and was considered in the challenge. Lovely head with correct stop and good length of muzzle. Strong neck leading to well laid shoulders. He has decent width and depth to his ribs and is firm over the loins giving a correct top line. His quarters are well developed with good width to his second thigh. He was the better mover here, showing reach and drive.

2 Batey’s Glenbrows Best of Friends

Another one with lots to like. Balanced in head with low set ears and shape below his eyes. Good length of neck. He has straight front legs and his elbows are neatly tucked in. His chest is deep but still lacks a little width. He has a good turn of stifle. Not as positive on the move as the winner and tended to be a little proud of his tail.

3 Graham’s Don's As Bold As Brass with Nyliram

Limit Dog (7,2)

1 Stevenson’s Mymmsbrook Matador with Blythway

I came across this boy as a puppy and predicted a bright future for him. Now three years old, he is looking well. His head has improved with time and he has a defined stop and shape below his dark eyes. Strong clean neck of good length leads to well-placed shoulders. He has the desired deep brisket and good spring of ribs. Strong over the quarters and in good coat and condition. He moved well both ways. In the challenge I just preferred the compactness and tail carriage of the Open winner, nevertheless, a lovely boy who deserved the RCC.

2 Williams and Harrison’s Glenbrows Marquis

Another one with plenty to like. Well shaped in head with low set ears lying close to his cheeks. He has correctly sloping shoulders and good width to his ribs. Firm over the loins and well angulated behind. He moved well in profile. I just preferred the neater front of the winner here.

3 Hepworth’s Kamunting’s Mad Hatter

Open Dog (4)

1 Millard’s Sh Ch Ferndel High Comand at Rubylea

Impressed me enough to win the reserve CC last time I judged and today, I felt that he had improved from then. He has undoubtable breed type with well-proportioned head, low set ears and the desired slightly domed skull. Strong clean neck of good length leads to well laid shoulders. He has plenty of bone without being coarse. Well ribbed with strength over his loins. His quarters are strong showing width to his second thigh and hocks are well let down. He was moved at the correct speed to show drive and keep his top line. He edged this class on movement, carrying his tail correctly. A worthy CC winner.

2 Clarke’s Sh Ch Tigerrock Magic Woundabout

A worthy Champion also in good form today. Standing, he presented a picture of type and substance again without coarseness. Balanced in head with kind dark eyes and typical expression. Straight, well boned front. Deep in chest with good spring of rib. He too, has good rear angulation. In good body and condition.

3 Gaylor and Robertson’s Heniveruce King of Brewers for Aprilflash

Special Beginners (2)

1 Bronnydene Fly Red Kite

Second in Junior a bit more settled here and moving better.

2 Naunton’s Trenzalore’s Princess Leia

A 2 year old girl with such a positive temperament and showing well. Good reach of neck and straight front legs. She has good depth to her body and held her top line well. A little longer cast than I would like but plenty going for her.

Puppy Bitch (2,1)

1 Jackson and Palmer’s Tuttington Ginger Snap at Ardinia

The only puppy present today, which was such a pity. This 9-month old girl is quite raw as you would expect for her age but is full of promise. Balanced head of good proportion which will get even better as she develops. Clean in neck with well laid shoulders, she is correct in front. Good depth for her age, she now needs to fill out and settle on the move. Best Puppy.

Junior Bitch (4,0)

1 Sutherland’s Jacranella Graceful

I was really taken with this one. New to me, she is so full of type and quality, undeniably welsh! Pretty head with defined stop and plenty of shape below her dark eyes. Good clean neck of correct length leads to well-constructed shoulders. Firm in top line with well-muscled couplings. She has strong quarters with good width to her second thigh. In good coat, she moved well both ways. Pressed hard for top honours, her time will come.

2 Harrison’s Glenbrows Harmony

Another out of the top drawer. Well-constructed with good head and lovely reach of neck. Well ribbed for her age. She has good couplings giving that compact body. Well angulated quarters and shown in good coat. She was just pipped by the steadier mover today. Another with a bright future.

3 McIlwaine and Reynolds’ Ferndel Rebecca for Benoveor

Post Graduate Bitch (6,2)

1 Tew’s Pamicks Dream with Me

Coming together nicely and presenting a balanced outline. Pleasing head with dark eyes and well placed ears. She has a strong neck and nicely sloping shoulders. Firm in top line and well developed in quarters. She has a good width of second thigh. She moved straight in both directions.

2 Trenzalore’s Princess Leia

Second in SB class moving well in profile.

3 Blackford’s Amblelight Adhara

Limit Bitch (8.1)

1 Harrison’s Glenbrows Wish

Another good one from this prolific kennel showing plenty of quality and presented to advantage. Clean in outline, she has a lovely head with dark eyes and well placed ears. Clean neck of good length with straight front legs and neat round feet. She has good depth to her body and is strong over her couplings. Good rear angulation. She moved well in profile. My RCC winner today.

2 Ritchie and Graham’s Renascent Bleaberry at Slapestones

A two-year-old that I have placed highly in variety classes previously. I was pleased to have the opportunity to judge her in the breed. Looks well stacked with feminine head and well placed ears. Strong in neck, she has well boned front legs and a deep, compact body with well sprung ribs. She moved well in profile showing drive and reach.

3 Millard’s Ferndel Water Lily at Rubylea

Open Bitch (4)

1 Graham’s Sh Ch Nyliram Telling Tales

Well known 3 year old looking her best. Full of breed type and quality. Balanced in head with plenty of work below her eyes. She has a clean strong neck of good length which leads into sloping shoulders and a well boned front. Well ribbed with width and depth but no coarseness. She is well coupled and has good width to her quarters. In firm muscular condition and so good to go over. She was well turned out and moved well at the correct speed. My CC winner and Best of Breed.

2 Thomas’ Bowdonia Truly Scrumptious

A lovely girl who has so much to like about her. Lovely head with good stop, dark eyes and that desired slightly domed skull. She is clean in neck and has a good return of shoulder. Strong over the quarters with well-developed second thigh and well let down hocks. Just preferred the ribs and drive of the winner.

3 McIlwaine and Reynolds’ Benoveor Can't Buy Me Love
