The Hound Association Championship Show 2024 – Whippet Bitches

It was a great honour being invited to judge the whippet bitches at The Hound Show – what a fabulous showground! Many thanks to Clare Boggia for taking so good care of everyone, and to the rest of the committee for making this a weekend to remember. A special thank you to my superb ting stewards and to Lorina Grisoli, who judged the males, for making our common decisions such an easy task! And of course thank you to all the exibitors for entering their dogs under me.

Having observed whippets for nearly five decades and seen them in the flesh in most parts of the world, I have always thought of the British breeders as the guarantee for preserving the true breed type. In whippets especially front construction has been a «headache» for a long time. Lately I, and many more in my part of the world, have observed a change which in my opinion is far more worrying – extreme hindquarters with exaggerated angulation and long, thin second thighs, some close to sickle hocked. I was happy to experience no such hindquarters in my ring this time. Construction is important in all breeds, but breed type is something else, or at least something more. No matter how good construction, it cannot be a good whippet without a proper outline – the smooth S-curves so typical for our breed. At Crufts as well as at the American Whippet Club’s National Specialty this year I was rather sad to see many flat toplines. Something to be aware of, I think. And there was quite a few flat ones in my ring at this show too, which influenced my placings.

Most of the bitches, with a few exeptions, had good muscle tone and condition. A couple were not quite comfortable on the table, hopefully they will improve with some positve experiences in the ring.

But I am sorry to say I have never, anywhere, seen so many dirty teeth! Such a shame and so easy to avoid!

1st: 1300 AKERBOOM, Mr J W & V. D. SCHAAF-AKERBOOM, Mr K – Crème Anglaise’s Irish Cream – BCC / BOB. I was so exited when this bitch entered the ring. I have seen her from ringside several times, of course, and I could hardly wait to put my hands on her. Was she as good as expected? Oh yes, she was! In my opinion it cannot be much better than this. The famous drop of water can easily travel from the top of her head to the tip of her tail without even the slightest little bump. Lovely head with the typical soft expression. Long, but not too long, strong and elegant neck, set into well laid shoulders, and all the curves so crucial for the perfect outline. Flat and lean muscles, no courseness anywhere. Presented in immaculate condition. Effortless and easy movement, keeping her topline very well. It was a joy to examine her – she certainly have a place among the best I have gone over in my nearly 40 years as a judge! And luckily my fellow judge, Lorina Grisoli, agreed she was the star of the day!
