Breed: Italian Greyhound

Windsor Championship Dog Show June 2024.

For various reasons, many apologies for the lateness of this report.

Thank you to the Committee of Windsor Championship Dog Show for asking me to judge at your lovely show.

Many many thanks to my excellent stewards, who did a sterling job, especially considering that they had been going since 8:30 and we were the 4th breed in the ring on the last day, without even a lunch break. Your time was much appreciated.

I had a super entry of 35 with only three absentees.

In general, I had some really good quality dogs. A few points that I will put here, instead of making negative comments on individuals. Temperament was not good in several dogs. I totally understand that some young dogs are unsure of being on the table, and I gave these ones plenty of time to settle. Some just need more training, owners should try harder and get to classes, so that their dogs are not so overwhelmed when they get to a busy show. Some are just plain nervous, which saddens me. Our lovely breed should be a little aloof, but seeing dogs that are just plain terrified of being touched or even approached, is not acceptable. Please leave them at home

and don't subject them to such an awful experience for them. Temperament should be seriously considered when breeding, as it is definitely more nature than nurture! Feet are another thing that has changed massively.

IGs should have lovely long hare feet, but the majority I saw today have round cat feet, not what it states in the breed standard. Fronts vary a lot, weak pasterns are quite prevalent, too many with the "10 to 2" affect. Some dogs are obviously made like that; others are lacking in exercise. either way, not acceptable. Likewise, cow hocks, strength in quarters is how a dog drives from behind,

weakness here is not what I like to see.

Dentitions were generally good, today I saw no really dirty teeth. Saying that, quite a few just needed a good brushing.

 Size is another issue.

I really don't mind a taller dog, so long as the elegance is still there. Heavy bone is just not what should be seen in IGs.

They are, or should be an elegant small hound, without the heavier bone of a whippet. I don't like to see small, apple headed skulls, but equally, I am rather shocked to see big heavy heads, wide and lacking stop. Movement in general was ok.

Don't forget, the engine is in the quarters. Some today were bum high. Now, a few are made like that,

but many just need to get their hocks underneath them, to allow them to drive forward, which allows the front reach to come out. Mostly, it's a handling issue, allowing their dogs to become heavy on the forehand,

with their quarters just trailing behind with no drive. Once again, more training needed, handlers need to teach their dogs to "self-hold" & not lean too much on the lead. Then you will see the natural gait of the dog,

without the interference of a lead or handler.

1st DUNNING, Mrs S Anjuskar Zenyatta

Lovely feminine girl, looking really good for her age. Beautiful head, with a soft, gentle expression

& an elegant swan neck, she has a good turn of stifle & straight quarters. Moved with purpose, she's a credit to her owner Best Veteran.

1st MACK, Mrs H. Alura Prince to Minitopo (IMP USA)

Smart black & white puppy of nearly 12 months of age. Super outline, with a good front assembly, topline which he keeps

 on the move

& strong, well angulated quarters. Moved well with purpose & drive.

2nd DOHERTY, Miss J. Littlebritton I Don't Care

Taller & rangier than 1, and at just 7 months, is very gangly & unfurnished. Moved with plenty of reach in front,

he was really enjoying himself, which was nice to see.

1st AMSEL & HAYDEN -SMITH Mrs J & Mrs M. Artmeis Aces High of Regallust (IMP)

Larger type, but definitely an elegant small hound. Beautifully presented and very well trained, he gives a great overall picture,

showing a lovely outline both standing and on the move. Reserve CC, BP, lovely to see him shortlisted in the Puppy Group.

2nd WYATT-HUGHES Mr T J. Littlebriton Lay It On Me.

Another of larger type, preferred the head of one. At only seven months he is still a baby & not yet finished.

Moved well with strong quarters and drive.

1st WILLCOCK Mr D. Newill Haymaker

I have liked this boy since he first came out and today he didn't disappoint. Great for type and size giving me

the overall picture that I was looking for in the males. Super little hound with everything in the right places,

he is masculine without exaggerations. On the move he has excellent front reach with good lift,

making for a nice overall picture. Pleased to award him his second CC I'm sure the third will come soon. DCC

2nd BIRD Mrs G D. Tamiskene Hamilton

Attractive fawn and white boy of good general overall type. He has good front assembly,

depth of brisket and turn of stifle, with strong quarters. For me he lacks a bit of animation and I preferred the overall picture of 1.

3rd WALLACE-HORNE Miss K Skylar's Chico

1st AMSEL & RISHWORTH-CUTLER Mrs J B & Mrs H

Ch Artmeis Raise the Stakes.

Here I found my star of the day. This lovely bitch has the most beautiful flowing lines, she's elegant, nicely proportioned, a really super picture of an IG & so feminine (I hate having to look underneath to see what sex a dog is!).

She moved with grace and charm with good reach in front and drive from behind. CC and BOB, great to see her take Group 4.

2nd AMSEL & RISHWORTH-CUTLER Mrs J B & Mrs H. Ch Artmeis Three Card Trick.

So very similar to 1, her litter sister, and much of what I said above applies to her too. I just preferred the overall shape and head of 1. As they are so alike and difficult to split, I just had to award her the RCC.
