Spanish Water Dogs

Judge: Anthony Allen

Thank you to Birmingham National for inviting me to judge, to the exhibitors for entering under me and Hazel my steward for keeping me on the straight and narrow. It was a super entry and there was a real depth of quality. I was pleased to see the quality level of breed has improved significantly since I last judged. My only concern was that there were some untypical temperaments, that must be kept an eye on, especially for future breeding programmes.

My DCC and Best of Breed was Preece & Cooper top class Janamorio Northern Arlo. My Res Dog CC was Trebert’s Sh Ch Valentisimo's Ballesteros PDH. My Bitch CC was the very exciting youngster owned by Glaysher, Donaldson and Palumbo in Rainethyme Ever So Special. Res Bitch CC and Best Veteran was Walker’s Sh Ch Valentisimo's Tizi. My Best Puppy and Best Special Beginner was Darwesh’s Chanderhill Smart Edition for Elizad.

A young boy with lots of promise at this stage, he was a little unsure today but once he gets his head together, he should do well. I liked his head proportions and expression, masculine and right for his age. Good through the neck and leading into well set shoulders. Standing on straight, well boned legs. Body developing well, good through the ribs. Quarters well made for his age. Very puppyish today on the move but when he did it, he had sound and accurate movement fore and aft. Best Puppy and Best Special Beginner. I understand this was his first show, a great start, good luck with him.

A very smart young man. Good overall shape, head masculine of good proportions. Strong through the neck which led into a decent front assembly, shoulder well set and a good return. Standing on well boned legs. Ribs springing nicely, a tad long in loin but not unbalanced. Well-made quarters, moderately bent stifles. In good coat which was of good condition with correct texture. On the move he had good foot fall, needs to tighten in elbow.

Young chap just 18 months, a lot to like about him. I liked his head which was expressive and had good proportions, good eye. Short strong neck and well laid-back shoulders, needs more return of upper arm. For me he is a tad long in loin and I would have liked a better finish to the croup. Well-muscled and in good condition. Coat in short clip, of good texture. He moved well to take the class.

2nd: SEARLES, Mrs Vanessa Cravessa's Bottoms Up JW

Different type of dog to the winner but very typey. 22 months old and progressing in the right direction. Head pleasing, of good proportions with good overall balance. Strong through the neck, shoulders well laid back and good overall front assembly, needs to drop in to his front which he should do as he matures. Standing on well boned legs. Ribs springing nicely, strong through the loin. Well-made quarters. Would like a bit more width to him, good front action on the move but rather untidy behind, not quite as fluid nor the drive of the winner.

This chap won this class on movement, his handler just absolutely got the best out of him. Balanced head of good proportion, masculine with a kind expression. Super neck which led on to a well assembled front, tight elbows would like a shade more return of upper arm. Standing on well boned legs and good tight feet. Ribs well sprung. Super quarters, good moderate bend of stifle and hocks well let down. Super action on the move, good foot fall. Considered him for the RCC, I am sure he will have a bright future ahead of him.

2nd: CAPILLE, Mrs Rachel Zorrazo Kind Regards at Lendever JW

A lot to like about this boy, in short clip and presenting a classic outline. Another youngster, 20 months old and a promising prospect. Lots of attitude about him and looks impressive on the stack. Strong masculine head, powerful strong neck, well set shoulders, good return of upper arm. Needs to drop in to his chest and tighten in elbow which he will do as he matures. Good well boned legs. Ribs correctly sprung and firm through the loin. Well-muscled quarters. Moved out well with a good action to take this place.

This young chap presents a super picture on the stack. On the move his action was brisk and fluid, he scored in accuracy of footfall. His handler just absolutely got the best out of him. Balanced head of good proportion, masculine with a kind expression, good finish to his foreface. Super neck which led on to an excellent front assembly, correct lay back, tight elbows and good return of upper arm. Standing on well boned legs and good tight feet. Ribs well sprung, super topline which he held throughout. Correct moderate quarters, good bend of stifle and hocks well let down. He has an excellent coat of the correct texture. Delighted to award him the Dog CC which I was told later was his second, and later in a very close decision BOB against the super young bitch.

2nd: 1828 HODGKINSONRUTHERFORD, Dr K & RUTHERFORD, Mr M Sh Ch Zorrazo Quest for Success (Imp Hrv) JW JCH

Another dog who has done well under me in the past, but he didn’t quite bring his A game today. He is well proportioned, and of good overall shape and size. I liked his head piece which is well proportioned with good width. Neck strong, shoulders well set, I would like a little more return of upper arm, stands on well boned legs. Has plenty of depth to his chest. Body is well made with a good spring of rib and quarters are well made with moderate angulation. On the move he had a good side gate, brisk in action but not as tidy as the winner on the up and down. He didn’t quite hold his shape as well today as I would have liked. A very smart dog, close up in the challenge.

I have judged this dog a couple of times in the past and he has won well under me, please to see him as a seven-year-old veteran and now carrying the title he deserves. He is a smart dog, strong and powerful in the neck, shoulder placement good with a decent return of upper arm. Ribs well sprung and strong loin. Held his topline well. Quarters well-made and was in good condition. In short coat but of correct texture. Moved out well to take his place. Really nice type of dog, I was pleased to award him the RCC.

2nd: ENOMOTO BREWSTER, Mrs N Blackyboric

Another smart boy with lots to like about him, rising 10 years and still full of energy. Out of a slightly larger mould that the winner. Good head piece on him with a dark eye. Strong in the neck, shoulder placement ok with enough return of upper arm. Ribs well sprung and strong loin. Held his topline well. Quarters well-made and was in good condition. Coat super of correct texture and curls. Moved out well for his age.

12 months old, needs a bit more confidence but please keep trying. Typical bitch of good proportions with a lovely typical feminine head. Short neck, shoulders well placed, needs a little more upper arm. Well boned legs & good feet, correct topline, slightly long in loin, good rear angulation. Typical in profile on the move but would have liked a little more enthusiasm, will get that as she gets more confidence.

2nd: BRIGHT, Miss Katherine Sierrasalvas Calabaza

Pleasing bitch of correct proportions with a feminine head. Short neck, good overall front assembly, stands on good feet, correct topline, would have liked more depth of chest and a tad more width to her throughout. Typical in profile on the move but needed more enthusiasm and a bit more confidence.

Just six months and everything in the right place. She has a balanced head and feminine expression. She has a super angulated front, correct depth of chest for her age and stands on straight well boned legs. Shoulders well laid back and correct return of upper arm. Balanced body proportions, ribs springing nicely for her age and correct height to length ratio. Excellent quarters with that correct moderate bend of stifle. Super in profile on the move, great front action, good drive. My Best Puppy Bitch.

2nd: 1833 MARTINEZ, Mr Isidoro & MARTINEZ, MR JOSE RAMON Bullbrothers Miracle

Very much liked this one as well but just wasn’t as positive on the move as the winner and this cost her the top spot. She has a pleasing feminine head of good proportions, good ear set. Super through the front with good assembly, standing on good legs and super feet. Ribs developing nicely for her age, slightly longer in loin. Quarters developing well with moderately bent stifles and hocks well let down. I think with maturity she will do well.

She has a pleasing feminine head of good proportions, good ear set. Tends to sink back into her shoulders on the stack which spoilt her outline. Good in front, standing on good legs and super feet. Ribs developing nicely for her age, good length through the loin. Quarters developing well with moderately bent stifles and hocks well let down. Brisk action, not a fluid as those ahead of her today.

1st: 1822 GLAYSHER, Mrs Caroline & DONALDSON, Mrs Fiona & PA Rainethyme Ever So Special

This young lady was my find of the day, only just over 12 months, she scores in outline and balance. Feminine in expression, her head is well defined with parallel planes. Pleasing eye shape of good colour. Front good, shoulders well laid back, super return of upper arm. She has a good depth to her chest for her age and is tight in elbow. Body well made, ribs well sprung and good height to length ratio. Super quarters with moderately bent stifles. In short coat as it is still coming, but of good condition and texture. Handled to advantage and paced perfectly, she came alive on the move, with a powerful driving action. This gave her the advantage in the class. A change of handler for the challenge and she did everything she needed to and looked a picture. I was delighted to award her the Bitch CC, her first of many, I am sure.

2nd: 1847 TREBERT, Miss J Lunares De Los Llanos Del Valle Del Fielamigo

Just 12 months old, very appealing indeed and has lovely breed type. She has a very feminine head, ears correctly set, good neck into well placed shoulders and straight front, needs a shade more return of forearm. Correct balance, a shade longer set that the winner. Just a bit soft in topline today. Good rear angles. Correct reach & drive, true coming towards me but she was not as fluid at the winner today.

Well sprung ribs and depth to chest. Good bone and straight front with tight elbows. Correct height to length ratio, she held her topline very well. 1st: 1851 WALKER, Mr Nigel Peter David & WALKER, Mrs Fiona & Sh Ch Valentisimo's Tizi

An old favourite of mine who has done very well under me previously and was lovely to see here again, now over nine, standing she has a super outline, with the correct ratios. She is so feminine, balanced & athletic. Lovely head, correctly proportioned with a dark eye and well set on ears, which all gives an intelligent & soft expression. She has correctly angulated front with shoulders well placed. Stands on good well boned legs and feet. Good depth of forechest & spring of rib. She did everything she needed to on the move, just showing her age slightly but she presented the most super picture, so had to take the RCC. Thank you for bringing her again.
