Working & Pastoral Breeds of Wales Championship Show 20.04.24

Many thanks for the Invitation to judge at this show in the beautiful Builth Wells on a sunny dry day and to my very efficient Steward and the Exhibitors for their entries.

Firstly I’d like to bring your attention to the breed standard regarding feet:-

 Feet strong, round and compact with toes well arched, hind feet somewhat longer than front. Pads very hard toenails short dark and strong.

There were far too many incorrect feet i.e. being flat, not compact, with toenails almost a cm long in some cases, hence, front pasterns will be weaker also this becomes quite evident when dog comes towards and stands freely setting itself up often standing at ten to two. Feet are the foundation block if not correct will give weakness so not giving capability for endurance, like us comfortable feet and footwear go hand in hand, i.e. a marathon runner would not run a marathon in flip flops, or myself Judge in 5 inch heels. Also there were some short legs and too long in leg hence not the desired 50/50 ratios, and lacking in fore chests strength and length in loins also varied again showing in movement. Temperament was very good on the whole, but please if you choose to sit your dog for teeth examination be gentle, some were so rough on their dogs and not necessary this can be done gently and yet still thoroughly. Generally markings were of good colours and shapes.

Miss Broadbank Bevanray Shirley at Nyandor ShCEx B. 7 yrs. Presented in good condition makes a feminine outline on the stand with shiny jacket. Broad skull with good stop and ear set. Muzzle has depth with strong dentition and jaws. Dark almond shaped eye. Neck fits into well laid shoulders, depth to chest and width to chest. Stands on good feet, nice bend to stifles and sound rear muscle tone, this showed on the move giving positive drive and balance with good ground cover.

Junior Dog 5 0Abs

Ms G Courtney-Baughan Jhava Black Magic over Whisperdown. 13mths makes a good outline on the stand. Broad skull, with ears set high and flat to cheeks. Well defined stop and good eye set and shape with dark eyes. Muzzle has depth and strength with good dentition. Neck of ample length well laid in shoulder and good elbow fit. Chest has good depth and with good width. Firm top line and loins. Well bent in stifles and good muscled thighs. Moved out well, best mover in class, fore and aft retaining balance on side gait.

Mr M & Mrs J. M Powell’s Botlierskop Silver Sceptre for Riverstock 14 mths. Developing well with ample bone for size and shape. Head and muzzle ratios goo dark eye of good shape and ample stop with strong jaws and good dentition. Ample neck into well laid shoulders, chest developing well for depth and width. Muscling to rear and hocks. Once settled moved out quite well.

Mrs W & Mr G Steel & Mulhall Darkamar Tobias Well boned lad. Skull broad with good ear set moderate arch to forehead, stop well defined, muzzle level and has depth, good bite and dentition set square. Dark eye Strong neck into well laid shoulders. Chest has depth and width with good elbow fit, stands on straight well boned legs and feet. Firm body and muscling to thighs. Moved out with drive and good reach in front keeping a shape.

Mr L L Cartwright Steigan Rupaul Charles Masculine outline of good shape. Broad skull with neat high set neat ears, good in forehead, defined in stop, eyes almond shape and dark with good expression. Muzzle level with good depth and strong jaws teeth are strong and set-square with well-fitting lips. Neck is strong of good length into nice lay of shoulders of good length. Elbows fitting into well sprung rib with good depth and width. Firm strong loins and muscling to rear, good bend of stifle and sound hocks. Moving had strong drive and good reach in front covered ground with ease. Stood out in this class. Really considered for RDCC.

Mr S & Mrs D Lambert Seittor Fast love. Another well boned lad. Good head and skull ratios and stop, dark almond eye. Muzzle has depth with strong jaws and good fit of lips. Good front assembly and depth to brisket and width across the chest. Firm in top line muscling to thighs and sound hocks. Pasterns could be a tad firmer, moving covers the ground with balance keeping his shape.

Open Dog 8 1abs

Miss M Dunhill-Hall Ch. Teigan Jedi by Fantasa Just over two years. Super masculine outline on the stand and handled well to show off his assets. Head is impressive, broad skull high set neat ears, moderate arch to forehead, good definition to stop. Eyes set well with good almond shape dark expressive eye, straight muzzle with good depth and strong dentition set square and well-fitting lips. Strong well-muscled neck fits into long well laid shoulders and good fore chest, elbows fit well at well sprung ribbing. Stands on straight front legs good pasterns and correct compact feet. Top line is firm with short loins. Nice bend to stifles, good length to upper thighs and lower thighs leading to sound hocks. Moving out was true away and towards setting himself up perfectly into a free stand, his side gait is fluid and precise covering the ground with such ease. DCC BOB and Later Group 2 Well Done.

Miss Carmichael Kayshillblue Zeus of Lorayla JW Similar size make and shape to 1. Well boned 2 yrs. old. Another with good ratios and proportions, dark almond eye good stop muzzle has depth with strong dentition and well-fitting lips. Neck is of ample length and good front assembly, Chest is deep with well sprung ribs and elbow fit and width to chest. Stands on well boned legs and good tight feet. Firm loins and nice bend and muscling to thighs with good hocks. Moved out true and back setting himself up to a good outline. Moving was precise and positive in foot placements whilst covering the ground ergonomically. RDCC.

Mrs C Clark Dortmund Maggie May Just six months and lovely feminine shape. Head and muzzle ratios developing well, neat ear set, dark expressive eye. Good dentition and tight lips. Neck starting to muscle, good front assembly, standing on good feet. Chest good for width and depth at this stage, short loins and ample bend of stifles, muscling starting on thighs. Moving had a positive foot fall and a good side gait when balanced and settled. BP

Miss L Sylvester Teigan Khaos Another promising feminine baby similar size and shape to 1. Head and skull developing well, good stop, ear set and dark eye. Good dentition tight lips. Muzzle slightly weaker than 1. Nice length of neck into good front assembly chest and ribbing developing well. Needs to strengthen in rear muscle tone for stronger hocks which showed on the move.

Mrs S & Mr D Lambert Seittor Voodoo Spell 13 mths. Lovely feminine silhouette on the stand. Skull is broad with high neat ears, right amount of forehead and good stop. Eyes almond shape dark and expressive. Level muzzle with strength to jaws with set square dentition and well-fitting lips. Neck ample length and slight arching fitting into well laid shoulders. Chest has depth and width and tidy fit of elbows. Holds a firm top line, short loins and muscling to thigh with nice bend of stifle and sound hocks. Moved out effortlessly covering the ground with purpose whilst retaining a good shape. RBCC

Mr L & Mr L Cartwright Steigen Silky Nutmeg Ganash Another quality feminine make and shape on the stand. Good skull and neat ears, defined stop and medium almond eye. Muzzle is level and developing in depth with well-set dentition. Ample length to neck. Long sloping well laid shoulders. Good chest to leg length ratios and spring of rib. Once settled moved out well with drive and reach.

Miss E Bereon Casey Wizard Montenegro Rott (Im Mne) Ample bone for overall size. Ample width of skull, would like stronger muzzle depth. Eye dark. Chest developing for width and depth. Weak in pasterns and feet could be tighter nails need attention. Moving the weakness in pasterns showed and the feet not being tight when stood in a free stand. Needs more muscletone throughout at 22mths for me.

Mrs M Monk Olearia Queen of Hearts 20mths and developing well for bone size and shape. Ample width to skull, with good stop, eyes dark and of good shape, muzzle level, like a shade more depth dentition set square. Fair length of neck and ok front assembly. Good depth to chest and width, elbows fit well. Stands on straight front legs good feet and pasterns, rear muscling starting to tone. Shade longer in loin than 1. Moved out well with a positive balanced action.

This was a very varied class.

Miss E Bereton Kiki vom Anagastan (Im Mne) almost 4yrs. Head ratios ok, good bite and tidy lips. Ample length of neck, lay of shoulders. Like more bend of stifle and better muscle tone throughout, moved out better than 2.

Mrs C A Willis-Impey Abacabs Duchess 2 ½ yrs. Ample width to skull and good stop and muzzle with strong jaws and dentition. Moderate reach in neck chest developing well like better fitting elbows, pasterns could be firmer and feet tighter and nails attended to, this showed in movement.

Miss L & Mr J Carmichael & Yardley Stairvale Gisele

Mrs M Rowarth Darkamar Winx Just 2 yrs. Feminine outline of good bone size and shape. Broad skull, neat ear set and good forehead, stop and depth to muzzle strong jaws and good strong dentition. Dark eye with a look of mischief. Strength to ample length of neck. Shoulders long and well laid. Chest has width and depth with good elbows. Firm top line, well-muscled thighs good bend to stifles and sound hocks. Quite hyper on the move taking time to settle and form a balanced stride briefly showed her capabilities certainly giving her handler a hard time. More compact than 2.

Mr N & Miss L Bateson & Hoole Upmont Gypsy Roma Larger made than 1 . Good skull and muzzle ratios and bite. Dark eye and neat ears. Neck strong depth and width to chest and ribbing. Ample bend of stifles, like overall firmer muscle tone and tighter feet and shorter nails. Moving not as positive as 1 due to looseness in muscle tone.

Miss M Dunhill-Hall Ch. Fantasa Lucky Seven Superb bone, feminine outline for make and shape on the stand eye-catching. Best of heads broad skull good forehead, ear set. Well defined stop, eyes medium almond dark and so expressive. Muzzle is level and good depth with strong jaws and set square dentition. Neck has slight arch and strength, fits into well laid long shoulders. Stands on straight front legs round feet and good pasterns. Chest has width and correct depth to leg length well-fitting elbows, firmest of top line with strong short loins. Good bend to stifles super muscling to thighs with correct angles to hocks. Strong powerful driving rear action and reach in front retaining a fluid balanced ground covering action could go all day. BCC.

Mrs M & Miss J Rowarth & Pinky Ch. Darkamar Selene Another quality feminine shape on the stand. Broad skull with good width, defined in stop, dark almond eye. Muzzle level with set square dentition. Strength to neck with well laid shoulders. Chest has depth and width, stands on good legs and feet. Firm top line and loins, good muscling to thighs which gives sound powerful action on the move.
