Breed: German Wirehaired Pointer

Windsor Championship Dog Show – Friday 28th June 2024

Mrs Alex Newton (Layasway)

Thank you to Windsor for the appointment and honour to judge GWPs at your show. I was very pleased with my entry especially being midweek and very few absentees. Overall, I was pleased to see so many lovely heads and dark eyes as well as some super wire coats, which is so important in this breed. All dogs were in good condition, as they should be at this time of year, my top winners hugely impressed me. We had a lovely big ring so I was able to assess the movement which again is so important in this breed, they should be able to drive round a ring all day. I was delighted that my BOB went on to win Group 4 – she is a wonderful example of the breed.

1. JOHNSTON’S Sh Ch Bel Ch Canis Fortuna Harda. Loved this 7yr old dark liver and white bitch. Her coat was superb and she certainly belies her age. Such a pretty head with a dark eye and sufficient furnishings. Excellent length of neck into well placed and well-muscled shoulders. In fact, she was in great condition throughout. Lovely topline with slight fall to the croup. Excellent feet and good bone. Moderate rear angle with hocks well let down. One the move this bitch showed herself so well and moved with drive and purpose. Was looking for something to beat her and it happened to be her daughter, however pleased to award her RBCC and BVIB.

2. GEARY’S Egermaster Shine for Germanus (Imp Rus). Another lovely bitch of good size. The prettiest of heads with a lovely dark eye, kind expression and good furnishings. Lovely dark liver wire coat. Strong neck into well-placed shoulders. Good length to height ratio. One the stand she had a lovely topline and tailset. Carrying a little weight which spoilt her topline on the move, preferred the balance and movement of winner.

1. GEARY’S Wesley Vom Alte Wald at Germanus (Imp Hun) NAF TAF. This black and white male was just over 12mths old but loved him and will watch with interest as he matures. A beautiful head, with the darkest of eye and the softest expression. He had character. Good length of neck into well laid shoulders. Good bone for his size and age. Excellent wire coat. Good depth of chest and well tucked up loin. Correct topline and tailset which he held well on the move. It was on the move that he caught my eye again, moved with drive and reach and covered the ground with ease. Pleased to award him RDCC.

2. JOHNSTON’S Glenquin The General. Another black and white male of similar age but a different type. Very much still a baby and needs to settle into his frame. Lovely head with dark eye and good furnishings, Good length of neck. Would prefer more length of upper arm. Good depth of chest for his age. Preferred the coat of 1. Excellent rear angulation with well let down hocks. Moved well but was giving his handler a hard time and just wasn’t settling today.

1. JONES’ Germanus Makin A Point (AI). A 2yr old liver and white boy who has a very cheeky character. Loved his head shape and ear set, would prefer a slightly darker eye to complete the picture. Excellent length of neck into well placed shoulders but would like a longer length to his upper arm. Good topline and correct depth of chest. Superb coat texture and with the darkest of liver colour. Moved well but was enjoying his day a little too much to settle. BSB

She had a lovely depth of chest reaching down to her elbows and good spring of rib. Beautiful topline and tailset with a fall over her croup. Strong rear quarters and good length of hock.
