East Anglian Gundog Society

East Anglian Gundog Society – Open Show – Friday, 7th April 2023

Wonderful sunny and warm weather greeted all exhibitors at this lovely Gundog Open Show set amidst beautiful, luscious green Norfolk Broads. Meticulously organised by the EAGS Committee, this show has a lovely ambience to be envied by other Gundog Societies.

Gordon Setter

A wide range in types had presented before me, ranging from delicate to solid constructions. Some exhibits were a little narrow in the head, carrying overly long coats. Some would benefit from dental cleaning. Otherwise, all were in top working condition without excess weight which was nice to see.

Junior (4)

1st Sandiford’s Hernwood Love Potion. A little showstopper, at only 9 months old she epitomises the breed standard at this time of her development. A stylish little bitch with a kind expression. Head was deep and broader than the muzzle with overall good proportions. Nice dark and bright eye showing intelligence. Correct bite. She drove nicely with a good stride which evidenced a sound confirmation and correct fore and hind quarters angulation. Correct tight and well arched feet. Good quality coat with a deep sheen and correct colour markings. A slight touch of penciling on toes but did not detract from the overall appearance. Masterfully handled. A clear winner of her class, Res BoB and Best Puppy.

2nd Alpe’s & Abram’s Pipruda Jubilation. At 11 months, this is a lovely bitch to watch as she progresses through her show career. Possesses a handsome breed type head with a melting expression. Nice dark eye showing intelligence. Correct bite. Correctly constructed she has a deep brisket for an exhibit of such a young age which demonstrates good breeding. Tight feet with a blush of penciling. Coat of top quality and colour. Was a little unsteady in movement which is down to her young age but will no doubt come into her own gaining more ring confidence.

3rd Sandiford’s Hernwood Will Love You

4th McCarthy’s Hernwood Wizard of Oz

Post Graduate (2)

1st McCarthy’s Hernwood Boston High Flyer. A mature 6y ear old handsome male which mirrored the breed standard. In appearance possessed true style and elegance. Demonstrated an exquisite head without any heaviness or excessive pendulation. Dark eye and correct bite. Strong neck and well-muscled throughout, this male had great proportions and correct angulation. He drove with ease and made use of ring space. Absolute level topline which was pleasing to see, has noteworthy wide loins. Free of any penciling. As for the coat, it is of good quality and colour however, I would like to see more effort in the grooming which would have added to his show presence. Correct testicles. Undisputed BoB.

2nd Amscott True Lies (IE). A 2,5 year old bitch with a gentle feminine expression. Correct dark eye and bite. Nice confirmation and flowy movement but was a little narrow in the rear, perhaps this was down to the soft ground. The coat possessed a deep sheen and correct colour markings. A slight touch of penciling on toes but did not detract from the overall appearance. Would prefer to see a shorter coat given the breed’s working disposition. This young lady has a long way to maturity and is one to watch as she progresses through her show career.

IRISH RED AND WHITE SETTER

A lovely entry of IRWS without dripping coats which was nice to see. Some would benefit from ringcraft training to help with effortless movement around the ring. Likewise, some would benefit from dental cleaning.

Junior (1)

1st Lockwood’s Klarnein Musician. This 14 month old youngster is bred to a small and agile type. He has a dark eye and correct bite. He is a long way from reaching maturity. This was his maiden debut and moved nicely around the ring. His fore and hind quarters are correctly angulated. Moreover, he has a lovely short coat of high quality and markings, with pearly white background and a rarely seen true chestnut red colour. Correct testicles. I look forward to seeing this young man at setter and pointer sporting events.

Post Graduate (1)

1st Cornwall’s & Licence’s Settersay Tornado. This 2,5 year old male is on the larger scale for his breed but is not deprived of elegance nor balance. He carries a well-proportioned and masculine head with parallel planes, well set ears although would have preferred a slightly darker eye. Otherwise, he has a well developed chest and sprung ribs and overall good conformation. Lacking in ringcraft meant that he couldn’t demonstrate his movement to its full potential although the soft ground probably didn’t assist with this. His coat is of high quality and lovely colour, and at just the optimal length to maneuver through heather with ease. Beautifully groomed. Correct testicles. I look forward to seeing him work at setter and pointer sporting events.

Open (4)

1st McDonald’s Roanjora Rioja Crianza. A three year old elegant bitch, demonstrates sound breed type, balance and composition. She has a pretty head with parallel planes, muzzle square without pendulation. Dark eye and correct bite. Correct angulation both fore and hind with tight feet. In movement she’s fluid, with clear drive and momentum. Her coat is of high quality and correct length, with a lovely pearly white and red colour. Expertly handled. A clear winner and my BoB. She was also shortlisted in BIS.

2nd Catton’s & Cook’s Daithi Shadow Dog With Ferngate (POL). This 4 year old male is handsome and in every way masculine. Lovely balanced head with hazel eye. Correct bite. He is of solid construction and has a topline as straight as a pencil, deep chest and correct fore and hind quarters. Long and free striding he drove in movement, keeping his handler occupied. Would have preferred slightly tighter feet. Correct testicles. Coat could benefit from a little more grooming. He was my obvious Res BoB.

3rd McDonald’s Roanjora Montepulciano

4th Farrow’s Roanjora Fleurie
