Open Show 4th June 2023

Judge: Lloyd Cross

I would like to thank the officers and committee of ECDA for asking me to judge at their lovely summer open show and thoroughly enjoyed their hospitality and my time in the beautiful sunshine in Milton, Cambridge. Lovely big rings and well-manicured grass meant every exhibitor was able to show their dogs off to advantage.

AV Veteran (7,1)

1st Bullinghams’ Bowetts Aventurine at Stoweytop

Beautifully presented red mini smooth of nearly 9 years. This girl caught my eye the moment she walked into the ring, and she certainly had some tough opposition. On the move held a classic flowing outline with proud head carriage, beautifully balanced with correct movement. On closer inspection had a feminine head, nice dark almond shaped eye nice tight elbows and well angulated front construction. Flowed into a lovely smooth topline. Good length of ribbing, correct length of loin and nicely angulated hindquarters. Really showing at her best to win Best Veteran in Show. In the challenge I seriously considered her for top honours and was in my final 3.

2nd Chapmans Melminds Zsylvester ShCM

Lovely shaded red male of 11 years still holding his own and one who has won well under me in the past. A masculine hound of excellent proportions, great head and expression, super neck, and shoulders strong prosternum. Strong hindquarters and nice depth to height ratio. A classic long of lovely stature. On the day he didn’t hold his outline or hind movement quite as well as the first but a lovely dog who will always be a favourite of mine.

3rd Ch. Carpaccio Jasper from Hamoura ShCM VW

Best In Show

Maes-Jones & Bates Derochaise Blue Danube – 22-month superb wild boar standard wire dog of great presence and one with a very bright future ahead for sure. Very well balanced with a super prosternum, depth of keel and lay of shoulder. Lovely tight elbows and super substance. Of a correct size and nothing coarse or exaggerated about him. Great spring of ribs carried well back nice short loin and by far the best hindquarters of any dog I judged here today. Excellent turn of stifle strong parallel hocks. On the move was a pleasure to watch using his powerfully built hindquarters to drive him forward and a lovely reaching action in front. Very pleased to award him BIS and will certainly watch his progress as he matures further. My congratulations on a lovely homebred dog.

Chapmans Melminds Meryl Streep – a feminine, elegant 2-year-old red girl who was also a real eyecatcher – her movement around the ring was super with great drive and reach. On discovering her name once given my marked catalogue I immediately realised that she was my best puppy when judging Crufts in 2021. She has developed well and has gained much confidence. Great to go over – lovely ovel front good bone, very feminine head and lovely eye, super expression. First class shoulders and a lovely natural flow from an elegant neck into her topline. I sincerely hope that she goes on to win the top awards she deserves. Congratulations to a very dedicated breeder.

Gaskins Hampdach I Am The One and Only at Dovestream -  Beautiful clear red puppy of 7.5 months, still maturing but certainly has everything in the right place. Super pro-sternum and developing depth of keel, smart masculine head, a good dark almond shaped eye, and correctly placed ears. Super length of neck used and held beautifully on the move. Good shoulders and nice tight elbows. A lovely topline on the move and standing and well-muscled hindquarters giving him lots of power and drive on the move. True in front and excellent parallel movement behind. A balanced dog of a good size and one I will look forward to watching win even more as he matures fully.

Phillips Summerview Hello Hugo – Smart Black & Tan boy of just over 7 months. As the BPIS still very much a baby but with bags of potential at such a young age. Lovely clear markings, great substance, and size, correct tight feet. Correctly shaped head and delightful expression. This boy will have a big coat when fully mature, in tip top condition. Nice reach of neck and correctly angulated shoulders. Level topline standing and on the move nicely angulated hindquarters. Moved with purpose covering good ground. Good length and spring of ribbing which was missing in a few I went over today. Delighted to award him RBPIS and with maturity will be troubling the best.
