Kington Horse Show And Agricultural Society

KINGTON HORSE SHOW & AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY (Dog Section) 9th September 2023

My sincere thanks to the committee for the invitation to judge the Pastoral breeds (excepting Corgi’s & Shelties), at the above show. Entries varied which is sadly the case at open shows these days, and the attendance was probably affected by the extreme hot weather for which we have been deprived of for most of the summer and likely effected the dogs and their performance on the day. (It was also Pastoral breeds day at Richmond on the 10th) Many thanks to my experienced steward, and the ladies of the committee who made sure the judges were very well looked after throughout the day.

B.S.D - (TERVUEREN) - Limit (0) - Open (2-2) BORDER COLLIES - Limit (3-3) - Open (3-3) SMOOTH COLLIES - Spec Year (0) - Limit (0) - Open (0) HUNG PUMI - Limit (2-2) - Open (4-4) P.M.D - Limit (0) - Open (0) SPEC VETERAN 10+ Yrs - (2-2)

BEARDED COLLIES Limit -(3-1) Two lovely dogs to begin the day with. 1st: GWALLTAFWYN RHODD UNIGRYW (Steer-Eldridge) Brown male of 6 years, who appealed for his general breed type and sheer quality. Loved his head which was balanced in length with square flat skull and soft eye. Something caught his attention on the showground which made him lift his ears and arch his brows, hence gave him a bright and enquiring expression. His neck is slightly arched merging into sloping shoulders, level back and good length of rib, with well bent stifle and low hocks. His coat of ideal length was very well presented. I could only hold him back on one thing, and had it been correct would likely have been placed higher in the group. BOB & PG4.

2nd: TYBURY’S BLACK MAGIC (Emery) Larger male of just 3 years old, who also has a nice head with broad skull and strong muzzle. He is heavier built than one, has a deep chest, level back, strong loin, and correct tail set. He carries a double harsh textured coat, and moved well, but not with the rear drive as his competitor.

Open – (3-1) 1st: G. RHODD UNIGRYW 2nd: T. BLACK MAGIC

ROUGH COLLIES Limit (1) - Open (0)

1st: LADNAR MAKE IT HAPPEN for NIKAL (Skinner) What a lovely surprise to see this young pup here today. At only 7.5 months, he shows a lot of promise, and still has plenty of time ahead to develop and mature. Standing he sports a lovely outline, which shows off his long neck, correct length to height ratio’s, strong bone and substance. I particularly like his head which is clean and smooth in outline with parallel planes, an obliquely set dark eye, with correct size, placement and carriage of ears. He still needs to come together on the move, but this should improve with age. BP & BOB & PPG1

GSD Spec Year (0) - Open (0)

Limit (2-1) 1st: ENDEARING WARRIOR at DARMAROR (Reilly) Black & Gold male of 15 months, still a junior and a promising example of his breed. With everything in proportion, he has a nicely balanced outline with strong neck, deep chest, gentle sloping top-line into croup (not too extreme), and nicely angulated hind quarters, together with good bone and substance. His head is developing well, with good length of skull, a medium sized dark eye, his ears are set high, and he has an alert masculine expression. His movement was sound with good side gait, and powerful rear drive. He was presented in excellent coat and condition. BOB & PG2.

O.E.S Limit (0) - Open (1) 1st: LINDISFARM HOPES & DREAMS for POUCHYMO (Powell) 5 year old bitch of ideal size, and who carries an abundance of profuse harsh textured coat. She has a nice head, square in skull, with defined stop, strong muzzle and lovely dark coloured eyes, with good pigmentation. Long arched neck, straight forelegs and well-laid back shoulders. A short square shaped body, with low set hocks and long tail. Her movement was okay, but by the time the group was judged, she was feeling the effects of the heat and didn’t quite depict the effortless gait/action that I’m sure she can display on a much cooler day. BOB.

A.V. IMP. REG. BREEDS – PASTORAL - Open (1) 1st: Int. Multi Ch. Bel/Ir J Ch. PIC D’ARLEE NELSON avec BERGERPICARD (Imp Fra). (Jeavons) PICARDY SD. I quite admire this newly imported breed, and this adult male of 6 years old looks to be a good example of a Picardy. A strongly built dog of medium size, quite solid but without any coarseness. His head is balanced in length with a dark oval shaped eye, definite stop, strong foreface and high set ears. Muscular neck and straight front legs. Good length of body with deep chest and good ribbing. His hindquarters are strong and moderately angulated, and his movement was free and effortless with good cover of ground and strong drive behind. BAVIRP & PG3.

A.V.N.S.C. PASTORAL - Spec Year (3-1) 1st: UNDER THE POLAR STAR DU REVE AUSTRAL DREAMTALE (Imp Fra) (Roberts) - AUST SHEPD Merle bitch of just 7 months, and very much the baby here today. She has a nice outline, with good front and shoulder angulation. Her body is filling out nicely, and she has a moderate turn of stifle with well let down hocks. She is coating up nicely, and moved well, but waned a little in the heat when it came to the group judging. PPG2.

2nd: VALLTINEYA GALADRIEL (Price) - S. VALLHUND 9.5 months bitch of sable grey colour. Her head is a clean blunt wedge with an oval shaped eye and medium sized pointed ears, good mouth and bite. She has a good reach of neck and well laid back shoulder, oval chest, and level back with a good bend of stifle and low set hocks. She moved quite freely, but was rather wide coming to in front action.

Limit (0) - Open (1) 1st: TROYA ELVIKAM of DREAMTALE (Imp Pol) (Roberts) - AUST SHEPD Attractive red merle of 4.5 years, who appealed for her breed type, size and balance, being feminine without any coarseness. She has a nice head with almond shaped eye, definite stop, although I would prefer better thickness and roundness to the shape of her ears. She has a slight arch to her neck, flat shoulders, good front, straight forearms, deep chest, good ribbing with firm loins, and moderately angulated rear quarters, strong let down hocks, and natural tail. Despite the heat, she moved very well keeping a level top-line, very agile with a free length of stride. She is in good fit condition and was nicely presented. BAVNSCP & PG1.

A.V.PASTORAL - Spec Year (5-2) 1st: HARESFOOT FATES ALIGN (nbt) (Cutts) - PEMB CORGI Just loved this wee fella! At just over 12 months, he looks to have a lot going for him. I liked his general appearance. His body shape is balanced with good angulations, a level top line, well laid shoulders, close elbows, correct stifles with short hocks and tight feet. Good head with flat skull, well set eye and ears. He moved well and has a super outgoing nature. A promising example of his breed. (I was rather surprised he never gained top honours in the small given breed class entries today?)

2nd: UNDER THE POLAR STAR DU REVE A.D. (Imp fra) – AUST SHPD

Limit (2-1) 1st: LUCKY LUNA (Maas) - PEMB CORGI Another out-going friendly PC of 12.5 months. She has a foxy head with tapering muzzle, well set ears and an alert cheeky expression. Her neck is long, but I would prefer a bit more length to her body. Her rear quarters are nicely angulated, she carries her tail high, and needs to settle on the move. Just needs time to mature.

Open (0)

SPEC VETERAN 7-9 Yrs (8-2) - P.M.D. 1st: Ch. Swiss/Ir/Multi/Int Ch. LISJOVIA BORIS BEAR at DARMAROR (JW. ShCM-ShCEx CW19) (Reilly) Another surprise to see this lovely dog entered here today. I have seen him competing at many shows, when sometimes my breed is judged in the adjacent ring. He is a lovely sized male, and stands proud showing an imposing elegance. His head has a slight curve to the skull, with dark almond shaped eyes. Fairly short but strong neck, with level back, and broad muscular loins, with sloping croup and long slightly curved tail. Despite the heat, he moved well with good drive from powerful rear quarters. I was pleased to award him BEST AVNSC PASTORAL VET and he also won BVIS. Well done!

2nd: STARVON YOU GOT IT at CONNINGSBEAR (ShCM. VW) (Price) - S. VALLHUND) Red sable approaching 10 years in absolutely super condition for his age. He has a wedge shaped head with dark oval shaped eye, correct ears and long, well muscled neck. Good body proportions with a level back, good angulations, well bent stifles, with sufficient bone and substance. A sturdy dog who moved with purpose and drive and was eager to please his owner.
